I was really looking for specific information like how long it should take to install an outlet, wire a house, etc. The author gave information how to collect your own data from experience. It was geared toward new construction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Estimating Electrical Construction
This book from an estimating standpoint reads like a text book without any substance. The author talks about estimating but does not show any practicality in the actual execution of electrical estimating. He does provide an example but if you have done any type of electrical estimating before you will find it not useful or expounding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!
The photos make understanding directions so much easier. The drawings are in color and very clear. The technical stuff is explained clearly. Making this one of the best How To Books you can find. Helpful Hints are included for example: about what kind of ceiling fan is the best to install, these hints are invaluable.
When I went to the building inspector he was very impressed with what I had learned from this book,(he thought I was an electrician!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Fear no Fire
Five stars should be saved for fiction which moves you.. and a four star cap for non-fiction. So the casual reader of reviews knows where I stand on this 'how-to' book..I loved it, used it and reccomend it.The first page breaks the ice..."If you do it wrong..it won't catch on fire, it just won't light up".. It was all I needed to read.. Armed with this book I've rewired my house. The Electrical inspector said the quality of work exceeded that of a professional. I of course was just following the advice of "ORTHO'S ALL ABOUT WIRING BASICS". The wiring diagrams are excellent, the text clear. Should you hesitate taking advice about electricity from a name known for gardening, please let this review be your guid and give it a try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for all residential electricians!
This is an excellent book dealing with the problems faced with old wiring. The content is very helpful for all levels of experience, however, it is extremely valuable for newer electricians or electricians specializing inold wiring. The descriptions of the Carter System, background informationand old catalog sheets are worth the price of the book itself.Buy thisbook, it'll make you money!

2-0 out of 5 stars A mixed review from Fine Homebuilding magazine
The author is obviously knowledgeable and does a good job of transferringhis experience to paper, [but the book has problems]. As I paged throughthe "Familiarizing Yourself with Old Wiring" section, I foundmyself looking for pictures of old cables so I could familiarize myselfwith them. There aren't any. And as I looked through the rest of the book,I noticed that this seems to be an overall problem. Instead of pictures ofimportant things such as different types of old cable, the book offers suchthings as a full-page spread devoted to a permit form. Although I loved theold ads and the photos of ancient receptacles and knife switches, goodillustrations are few and far between, and the quality of the photographyis absolutely terrible. There is good information on old wiring in here, but you have to hunt to find it. Too often the book digresses into topicsthat have little or nothing to do with old cable. I found myself wonderingwhy there's a section on photovoltacis and X-10 ultramodern control systemsin the book at all. Still, the parts of the book that deal with old cableare great. I liked the book, even with its obvious problems. It's a good, necessary addition to any electrician's library, including mine. But itcould have been so much more.--Rex Cauldwell ... Read more

Product Description
Handbook of Electrical Installation Practice covers all key aspects of industrial, commercial and domestic installations and draws on the expertise of a wide range of industrial experts.

Chapters are devoted to topics such as wiring cables, mains and submains cables and distribution in buildings, as well as power supplies, transformers, switchgear, and electricity on construction sites. Standards and codes of practice, as well as safety, are also included.

Since the Third Edition was published, there have been many developments in technology and standards. The revolution in electronic microtechnology has made it possible to introduce more complex technologies in protective equipment and control systems, and these have been addressed in the new edition.

Developments in lighting design continue, and extra-low voltage luminaries for display and feature illumination are now dealt with, as is the important subject of security lighting.

All chapters have been amended to take account of revisions to British and other standards, following the trend to harmonised European and international standards, and they also take account of the latest edition of the Wiring Regulations.

This new edition will provide an invaluable reference for consulting engineers, electrical contractors and factory plant engineers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Guide for Beginners
This is a very well designed guide to building and maintaining your own home network. It covers topics for both retrofitting as well as designing a network into a new home, and each section is covered with detailed instructions and photos. There are sections on wireless and wired networks, how to run/connect the wiring, and even a section on removing and patching sheet rock.Even for someone who may already be familiar with networking, there are good ideas for the home, such as installing pvc pipe to allow for future upgrades without having to bring down the walls.

If you're looking to install a home network or wiring setup, this will tell you everything you need to know. While written in 2004, not much has changed regarding this since then, and many of the tips/tricks should be useful for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for do-it-yourselfers
I rewired my house for cable, phone and a computer network and this book covered it all. It did take a couple of rereadings on the part about how to do the final terminations (there are a lot of colors and wires), and there are two wiring standards, but the book did cover it. I'm not a technician, but with a little forethought and common sense I got all 3 systems working the first time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward, easy to follow
Good starter book. I picked up some tips and enjoyed the book.Very helpful. Lots of good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Well Illustrated
In just over 120 pages, this Sunset edition on home network wiring covers in great detail wiring your home for digital. Along with step-by-step details, illustrations and photographs (2-3 a page) provide very useful visual examples. I had bought a few wiring books before this and none come close. ... Read more
