One of the most daunting endeavors for any would-bedo-it-yourselfer is dealing with the electrical--namely, electricalrepairs, improvements, and wiring and rewiring projects. The reasonfor this is simple: mistakes can cause fires, major disasters andexpense, and even death. But anyone can learn about safe and correctwiring in order to complete repairs or add new wiring to an aging andinadequate system. This is the book to show you how, from the basicsof how electricity works and simple repairs and projects, all the wayto complicated rewiring you might otherwise assume must be done by aprofessional. Included are the most up-to-date electrical coderequirements; guides to evaluating, planning, and installing newelectrical circuits; repair advice on switches, receptacles, andfixtures; and a detailed and well-illustrated lighting designsection. A total of 288 pages of hundreds of illustrations andphotographs and a comprehensive reference index make this an idealbook for the beginner, and an up-to-date refresher course for theprofessional. --Mark A. 5-0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker wiring guide
This book is saving me a lot of money.I dont hook up to electrical boxes but I do the inbetween stuff and have an electrician look it all over and hook up for me.It is very thorough and it has helped me identify electrical mistakes in my house from the previous occupants, such as reversed polarity on outlets which I was changing over to GFCI. This book is an excellent addition to any homeowners library and very much worth the 17 bucks. I live in an older house and I have had this book for a while now. It gets referenced every time I need to do electrical work. Even if I feel comfortable with what I am doing I still reference the sections pertaining to what I am doing just to make sure I am doing it right.

2-0 out of 5 stars NO USE FOR THE UK
Very disapointing as I didn't recognise any of the diagrams and looks like it was written for the USA/CANADIAN market NOT the UK.
This book is is of no use to me unfortunately, and would like to return it, if I knew how.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instructor
I am a Master Electrician and teach a class in Residential Wiring and I am always looking for good referance materials. This book has the best pictorials and easies reading that I have seen for a coule of years.I work basically with adults and they are finding the book helpful even after the class is completed. The book is clear and concise the chapters are well written. The only down side to the book is there are still items in the books both physical and written that do not meet or follow the 2008 NEC as advertized. The pictures are and can be misleading and the verbage can be also. None of the problems fall into the serious realm where someone can be hurt but they are just not the approved method of doing things today.

All in all the book is worth the money and the time that is takes to read it.It is easy to follow as I told the class that even a cave man can do it. I will purchase it or the next edition again.

Sincerely,

Larry Fadden

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Wiring
This product is exactly what I thought it would be. I was looking for a basic book on home wiring. This covered everything that I wanted it to, and then some. It's also a great reference with all of the full color photos so I am able to see what my wiring is supposed to look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this one!
Whether your a novice or advanced in electrical this is a great reference.Always make sure you check with local building codes and if you do not feel comforatable with working with electric than leave it to a professional. However, if you have this book you will gain the knowledge you seek to get the job done.Good luck with you project. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars home improvement
educational, good addition to non-profit groups home improvement library, reasonable price, satisfactory shipping and delivery

3-0 out of 5 stars OK book
Its just OK...you'll need another book to feel comfortable enoug to do actual electrical work

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little information
Basic Wiring was and is a major disappointment.
Much of the 128 pages are dedicated to pictorials of electrical components.
The photographs are of high quality, but who wants to know what the"face plate of a manual timer switch" looks like?
That took up half a page.
Too basic to help any one but the totally uninformed.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for beginners
This is easily the best basic introduction I've seen.Clear, well-illustrated, neither assuming prior experience nor treating the reader as a dummy, it can take you from Zero to rewiring branch circuits with confidence and safety.

I really can't recommend it highly enough! I already had experience, but picked up useful bits from it, and have loaned a copy to several friends.

The T/L Home Repair and Improvement series is good in general (more than I can say for most series), but especially this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.
I had done some wiring before I got this book, but I wanted a reference that I could use if there was something that I was at all unsure of. Once I got the book, I was very pleased with all the handy hints and illustrations. Definitely worth having it around if you're a novice electrician. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars missing basic info
Basic Question:How many convenience outlets can you put on one 20 amp circuit? The guide doesn't have that very necessary practical info., so I am unimpressed

5-0 out of 5 stars Residential Wiring
I like code check electrical book 2005 because it has only 30 pages
yet it has over 500 residential code article with picture excellent
residential code book good for studying for test . great picture
now the 2008 is not as good as 2005 because they took out 25 of the
best picture in the book. they took out motor calculation big issue
in electrical work. I use this in my residential classes , a
residential electrician is much different then commercial electrician
has to know over 500 residential code rules to pass their job.
John Hall , Instructor - Inspector

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good some useless
Some good reference material (it is only 30 pages). Some of it references NEC which means you are lost unless you have code book available. The 4th edition is for the 2005 code.Good chart for conduit fill. Not sure how much the page on swimming pool lighting gets used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference
I am not an electrician but as a licensed builder and home inspector I find the various Code Check's (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc) to be outstanding references, and the illustrations are a great help. Contrary to another rating comment, all the Code Checks I have do identify the particular code and year, either on the front cover or in the introduction. Anyone who pounds a nail or shops the electrical section at the local "big box" store should have copies of Code Check. Homeowners are notorious for saying (especially with electrical repairs) "Well that's the way my father taught me." Times and codes have changed and Code Check will keep you up to date and SAFE.

Protect your family’s health by improving your home’s air quality, making life better for anyone with allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities. And increase your home’s value with green improvements that command higher selling prices in a tight real estate market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gah..Another Time life book
I bought too many of these, because clearly I like them.Good for beginners and stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Wiring
I bought this book for the purpose of upgrading my 100amp fuse panel to a 200amp breaker panel.Well advanced should not be the title of this book,it should be 1 step above basic. Its got a few fair pictures (drawings) of two guys installing the panel, installing a mast, drilling a whole through the wall , and installing the meter base, but it really only has about one (1)
paragraph on each of these subjects. Its not detailed ,maybe if it had 20 pages on each step or even 5.And it also includes installing cable for cable tv (a whole chapter).
If you need to know the basics covered in this book, call an electrican please , changing or upgrading your service will not be possible with this book alone. And 100 amps can very easily kill you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value for Beginners
I recently purchased this (slightly outdated) edition of the book.I don't expect that there were any major changes as far as safety goes in the newest edition. This book contains far more information in a smaller format than any of the several other basic wiring books i have purchased. It also builds from the ground up as far as knowledge goes, and it is based on the national electric code, so you can be sure it is well thought out.it also omits many things from the NEC which homeowners would probably find extraneous, yet directs readers to the proper section of the code for more obscure and in depth items.

5-0 out of 5 stars Become an amateur wiring pro!
I bought my first edition of this book when I was building a workshop in our basement. I had done minor electrical work before (replacing light switches, installing one extension outlet in an existing circuit), so this job was rather daunting since it involved putting in a subpanel and 110 and 220V circuits. I happened upon this book at the local home center.

What I found was a treasure trove of information on every conceivable subject that would probably come up in wiring a house. And it takes you from ground zero, not even assuming you know what volts or amps are. The topics include: codes, planning, basics of electricity, all about wire (want to know the difference between NM, NMC, THHN, and EF? it's in the book!), ampacity, grounding, the service entrance, outlet/switch boxes (including a great section on calculating box sizes), wiring procedures, outdoor wiring/conduit, modernizing old wiring, applicances, and a number of special situations (motors, farms, etc). In the later editions, it also includes what I believe is a new section on low-voltage wiring. Since what I am doing now is building a deck, this will be very useful. (I'm on my second copy of the book.)

What's more, it's clearly laid out, easy to read, and everything references back to the NEC itself. It is truly as the editorial review above states, like having a "tiny electrician on your bookshelf." The author also updates it every 3 years, since the code changes that often. (Note that it's now on the 41st edition.)

Now, you won't find all kinds of beautiful color pictures in here. It's a basic book. It does have lots of diagrams and line drawings (at least one per page), plus a relatively small number of black-and-white photos. But I don't find this a problem at all, and it no doubt keeps the cost down. It's also very small: not shirt-pocket sized, but very small and portable nonetheless.

I think the best testimony to this book are two comments made by the electrical inspector. First, as he was doing the final inspection, I mentioned that I had made a change inside the wall since the rough inspection, so I could pull back the wall for him to take a look. He said it wasn't necessary: he could see the kind of work I did and he trusted me. Then, the inspector said "If all homeowners knew as much as you know, I'd be out of a job."

Pretty good, considering that I came into this job knowing almost nothing about house wiring. And I owe most of what I know to this little book. Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars It took the mystery out of electricity
I was terrified of electricity, so much so I had to have an electrician friend come over to the house to change an outlet. It was mysterious and it hurt. Then we moved into a ninety year old home, with old knob and post wiring (which was not too bad) and the most awful retro-wiring I had ever seen.On the first evening in our new house, we plugged in our coffee pot and dishwasher only to be greeted with a brilliant flash of electricity followed by total darkness. The circuits were so bad, we could not plug in more than one appliance per circuit. It was obvious that I was going to have to get over my fear of electricity if we were going to live in that house.

An elderly parishioner loaned his copy of Wiring Simplified. It was from the 1930s, perhaps a first edition, but it taught me how to wire circuits, figure amperage and keep my house from burning down.Since then, I have purchased an updated editions and have wired three-way switches, installed fixtures and added new circuits. If this country preacher can do it, so can you. This book is simply the best, it took the mystery out of electrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean and Mean, with all the basics you want!
This book perfectly meets my needs for a 'cliff notes' type of electrical summary and reference covering all the common and general applications and concerns. This book offers the most practical material I've found published to date on this subject.

My father bought me my first copy of this book over 20 years ago and he bought his further back than that. Ever since we never miss a revised edition, we both look foward to the new one and use it. It is well written and easy to follow. We both went from amateur to professional electricians on this book. So if you know alot or a little about electricity, this is a must have. ... Read more
