Description:
In this study, maximum likelihood supervised classification and post-classification change detection techniques were applied to Landsat images acquired in 1987 and 2001, respectively, to map land cover changes in the Northwestern coast of Egypt. A supervised classification was carried out on the six reflective bands for the two images individually with the aid of ground truth data. Ground truth information collected during six field trips conducted between 1998 and 2002 and land cover map of 1987 were used to assess the accuracy of the classification results. Using ancillary data, visual interpretation and expert knowledge of the area through GIS further refined the classification results. Post-classification change detection technique was used to produce change image through cross-tabulation. Changes among different land cover classes were assessed. During the study period, a very severe land cover change has taken place as a result of agricultural and tourist development projects. These changes in land cover led to vegetation degradation and water logging in part of the study area. ... Read more

Product Description
From Cheops, Ramses and Tutankhamun to the world of laborers and craftsmenWhat do we really know about our ancestors? Not about the rulers and generals, but about laborers, farmers, soldiers and families. Egypt is a perfect case in point, almost a blank slate for most of us as it regards details of their everyday life. This useful and informative book attempts to set the record straight by offering a distinctive take on that most mythologized of epochs. Who would have guessed, for example, that the first strike in recorded history took place in 1152 BC during work on the necropolis in the Valley of the Kings, a protest by construction workers against delayed deliveries of oil and flour? Two fairly banal commodities maybe, but essential: oil protected the skin against the savage desert climate, whilst flour was the base ingredient for thirty different kinds of nutritional cake.

It is this detailed examination of the evidence that distinguishes this volume, with chapters on everything from relationships to leisure activities, the role of women to the manufacture of mummies. And just like the mummies, "fragile as eggshell but solid as a statue" and magically able to transcend death, both people and country are brought alive for us again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great pocket companion
To put it simply, this is a neat book! For its size, the illustrations and photographs are great and really enjoyable to look at. Perhaps not a good source for detailed information about Egypt, but general information regarding the art and artifacts are very useful and trivial. A perfect handbook to carry with you where ever you go, and fairly priced despite its enduring quality. A must buy for readers just interested or even proffesional. Beware, some information may be outdated in the 2002 issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Egypt
Excellent survey of ancient Egyptian history, culture and artwork with superlative photographs and informative, insightful text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover!
The best picture is on the cover (courtesy of e.t. archive, London).

There's nothing new here: all the pictures are reproduced from various photo archives.Quite a few photos are out-of-focus and/or over-exposed.

If you're looking for really good pictures that have been newly photographed see those by Araldo De Luca in "The Valley of the Kings" - edited by Kent R. Weeks (ISBN 1-58663-295-7) and "Tutankhamun" - text by T. G. H. James (ISBN 1-58663-032-6).

The Hagens' book is divided into 15 thematic chapters (such as "Survival Techniques - Mummies" and "Tomb Robbers and Curses") - each opening with a metallic gold page which shows up finger marks. The text is comparable to that of a voice-over in a television documentary.

This one is for the mass tourist market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Pictures
I bought this book simply for its pictures!!They are great! They are large, sharp - especially given their size, and they are taken from unique angles. The book does not intend to be a comprehensive reference book on ancient egyptian history.its aim is to capture many of the various unique aspects of ancient egypt. i would have liked more full page(s) pictures.

a must buy if you are collecting books on ancient egypt and in the category of pictures! be informed that there are two pictures of explicit sex scenes.it is rare that u will see egyptian artifacts showing egyptian sex scenes, let alone explicit ones.so, be not shocked, the ancient egyptians were human afterall, or weren't they??!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Why did they translate this?
I like Tintin so I thought this might be an interesting gift for some young friends of mine.Unfortunately, the Tintin characters that decorate here and there have nothing to do with the text. Then on top of that, the book is shallow and ignorant of it's topic. It's treatment of Islam is particularly poor.Islamic law is Sharia, not Charia. It uses stereotypes of 'fundamentalists' and 'holy war' that would offend many Muslims.Muslims don't worship some strange god called Allah.Allah is the Arabic name for God, the same as the God of Moses and Jesus. It also said that all the idols in Mecca were destroyed but the black stone, as though the black stone is an idol of sorts, which is incorrect. My young friends are Muslim so I couldn't give them such a book and for religious understanding, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone else.

Excerpt: The Land of Punt, also called Pwenet, or Pwene by the ancient Egyptians, was a trading partner known for producing and exporting gold, aromatic resins, African blackwood, ebony, ivory, slaves and wild animals. Information about Punt has been found in ancient Egyptian records of trade missions to this region. At times Punt is referred to as Ta netjer, the "land of the god". The exact location of Punt remains a mystery. Most scholars today believe Punt was located to the south-east of Egypt, most likely on the coast of the Horn of Africa in what is today northern Somalia. However some scholars point instead to a range of ancient inscriptions which locate Punt in Arabia. Egyptian soldiers from Hatshepsut's Year 9 expedition to the Land of Punt as depicted from her temple at Deir el-Bahri. This relief depicts incense and myrrh trees obtained by Hatshepsut's expedition to PuntThe earliest recorded Egyptian expedition to Punt was organized by Pharaoh Sahure of the Fifth Dynasty (25th century BC) although gold from Punt is recorded as having been in Egypt in the time of king Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt. Subsequently, there were more expeditions to Punt in the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt, the Eleventh dynasty of Egypt, the Twelfth dynasty of Egypt and the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt. In the Twelfth dynasty of Egypt, trade with Punt was celebrated in popular literature in the "Tale of ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22216173 ... Read more
