Info before the Info Age
About Dyslexia: Unraveling the Myth by Priscilla Vail is a book of its time. Published in 1990 (and now out of print), it seeks to set forth the problems a dyslexic child faces in language that is clear, concise, and non-technical. It is a short book that follows the developmental stages of a child, from the preschool years through each grade of elementary school. Vail writes more briefly of the middle school and high school years, since her focus is on early identification and remediation. The chapters on grades one through four are particularly insightful.

On the other hand, the book is dated. It is important to remember that 1990 was pre-Internet and that hard information on disabilities was difficult to come by, unless it was in a clinical setting. There were no online parent support groups, no blogs; information came from the library or a blurry newsletter from a state or national society devoted to a particular disability. As a result, parents often felt like they were on their own. A book like About Dyslexia filled this information gap.

Since 1990, of course, that gap has closed substantially. In addition to an increase in the availability of information, there is an increase in the kind of information available, based on recent neurological research. Inevitably, there are contradictions between a book like Vail's and a more recent book like Sally Shaywitz's Overcoming Dyslexia. Vail, for instance, states that dyslexia is four times more common among boys; Shaywitz's research indicates that girls are simply under-diagnosed. Vail puts emphasis on the frequency of number and letter reversals; Shaywitz casts doubt on whether this is a proper marker for dyslexia, citing the frequency with which reversals occur in the non-dyslexic population. Most important, however, is that today, two decades after the publication of About Dyslexia, the study of the neurological basis of reading and of reading disabilities is the Big Thing. Vail's work, which is primarily descriptive, predates this.

Thus, Vail's book is best appreciated as a book that appeared when the parents of children with all sorts of disabilities were, often for the first time, acquiring a voice, in the years following the federal law that mandated access to public education for children with disabilities. It takes its place with any number of books that brought these children into the mainstream, from a parent's memoir about raising an autistic child (like the books by Josh Greenfield about his son Noah) to the appearance of a Down syndrome child on a TV sitcom (Life Goes On, which aired in the late eighties and early nineties). Parents who read About Dyslexia in 1990 would surely have felt reassured that the problem Vail describes was shared by many. Today, it is still a useful basic introduction to dyslexia. Since it is hard to obtain, seeking it out in a public library is probably the most useful course.

A revelation for parents
This book is a revelation for parents of a "mystery" child, who has many inexplicable difficulties in school (although not necessarily dyslexia), but also has extreme strengths in visual spacial areas, such as building and drawing. When I finally read this book, after years of struggle and searching and pain for my child, there was instant recognition. I looked at my child in a whole new way, realizing that I, and the school, were assuming that certain things were the most important (coincidentally, the things WE were good at), when this entirely untapped area was probably the key to the success of mankind.While focusing on the child's weaknesses, the extreme strengths were going unrecognized and unrewarded. I credit this book with saving my child's happiness, after years and years of criticism.Said child is now an adult engaged in a brand new field which uses those extreme strengths.Thank you, James West, for saving my child.I just wish we had found you (and you had written this book) earlier.

I bought this book thinking it will give me great insights on alternative ways of thinking and working but it's just another popular propaganda without any real substance.

The psychology in the book is nothing but folk theories.

Computer Graphics and Gifted Dyslexics
"In the Mind's Eye" is the most interesting book I've ever read. Author Thomas G. West shows how advanced computer graphic technology is starting to provide an educational and professional home for the dyslexic visual thinker. In delightful and precise language, he illustrates why this new world of processing requires a global perspective, or the ability to see the whole of a phenomenon, as opposed to the blinkered view of an isolated part, and thereby to recognize patterns and quickly identify irregularities and problems. A three-dimensional view of each trader's performance could have saved Baron's Bank from the rogue trader who destroyed it.

The brain design that enables the visual thinker to grasp vast amounts of data by seeing it from a global perspective often comes with dyslexia or other learning difficulties. For these people, the traditional classroom and bureaucratic organization are nightmares. Schools, universities, and corporations flush out many dyslexic visual thinkers at great cost to the progress of civilization.

Nowadays computers eliminate what in earlier systems caused problems. They handle spelling and calculations easily. Another kind of student and professional is needed, an individual who is talented at manipulating images, rather than those facile with arithmetic and able to recite on demand memorized passages assigned by a teacher.

Their passions lay in engagement rather than whether their inventions or discoveries would work or would sell. Their ideas and activities will trigger pyrotechnics of thought and, possibly, a myriad of ideas for projects to pursue in your free time.

Positive Experience
I went through the BIT treatment in 2005 and was happy with the results. My reading comprehension is improved, I no longer have to read things 3 or 4 times to understand what I am reading, my memorization skills have improved which has been helpful for test taking. It has been subtle changes for me and if I wasnt in grad school I may not have noticed the improvements, but since I am applying myself academically it has been a great help.

My experience with the technique
I experienced the method from the author. It was more like laying on of hands than acupressure. The research she did was on five subjects and there were no long-term outcome data. The study's results may be from inducing relaxation because they are immediately after a session. She also claimed to treat me for allergies, but I noticed no difference. Most of the sessions involved listening to her complaints about other's personalities. The theory of the method is that she is working with energy. A MUST Read For Parents
If your child is dyslexic you must read this book.Whether your child is in public school, private school, a school for exceptional children or you are considering homeschooling, this book will help every parent understand how to make a positive impact on your dyslexic child.My son has been through all those environments and, although I have a background in education, I benefitted tremendously from this book.
I initially bought this book because I was considering homeschooling.I really could have used it beforehand when my son was in private and, later, public school.Neither the most trusted private school nor the best A-rated public school could adequately address my son's dyslexia.The pull-out services were woefully inadequate and not even directed at dyslexic learners.After realizing his school situation was unacceptable and only teaching him to feel like a failure, I made the tough decision to pull him out.
As a single-parent who worked full-time, I was concerned that, even working at home and convincing his older brother to help, I would be overwhelmed.Instead, the book encouraged me that teaching a dyslexic homeschooler was truly about finding those teachable moments wherever they appeared.Whether it was writing a chore list for him, or a list of movie times for him to review on a Saturday night, this book gave the tools to make every situation a learning experience.In two years he went from four grade-levels behind to grade level.He was literate and enjoyed reading.The hardship came when he was passing from "reader" into "writer". No book could seem to adequately address dyslexic writers.Spelling is such an issue, as are rules of grammar.Ultimately, we ended up moving to a town that had a school for dyslexia to address these issues.However, the administrators were very impressed with how far he had come in only two years of homeschooling and, as a result, he was able to leave the exceptional school after only two years and is now successful in a mainstream program.What a blessing this book was!

Don't bother
I teach reading to high school students with a wide range of disabilities, including dyslexia.The title is misleading -- there is very little new information for middle through high school teachers.If you teach first through fourth grades, and don't have much experience with reading disabilities, you might find some good advice, otherwise, don't bother.

I ordered this because my son is dyslexic and I decided to home school him this year.I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far what I have read has been very informative.I can't wait to finish it.
