5-0 out of 5 stars My dog loves this food!
I borrowed this book from a friend and eventually picked up a copy for myself. I was thoroughly disgusted by the amount of chemical and waste additives in store brand dog foods. When I started preparing the recipes from Woofing it Down my lab became more energetic, his fur coat became shinier and healthier, and his excitement for dinner time elevated greatly. I am incredibly surprised with the ease and inexpensive nature of preparing food for my dog at home. I was also surprised at the variety of foods dogs could eat. The myriad of different foods and recipes fit easily within my grocery shopping list and budget. I would recommend this to any pet owner who wants to make a positive change in their animals' diet and overall health. Thanks in advance! I am purchasing a copy of this book because I sincerely want to cook meals for my animal at home. Dog food in the store is disgusting and I have been told this can save tons of cash when buying foods for my family and pet at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Doggie Cookbook
My children begged and begged for a dog and I decided to cave in and buy a puppy for them last Christmas. I was shocked by the cost of vaccinations, treatment, toys, and dog food. My veterinarian had this book in her office and suggested that we purchase a copy. I was skeptical about preparing my dog food because I assumed it would be time consuming and may not offer all of the nutrients that a growing puppy needs. The book was inexpensive and I am very happy we purchased it because now I can cook easy, healthy meals for the puppy while provide all of the essential nutritional elements required for growth and development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved me money on overpriced dog food
We had already started looking for dog food alternatives for several reasons. The only processed dog foods that our veterinarian recommended were very expensive. Sometimes we went to the pet store and they didn't even have the economy bags of food so we would end up buying very small bags with exceedingly high price per ounce costs. My wife and I were unsure about what types of food is safe for our dog so we didn't know if preparing food would be efficient and safe. This book is an excellent guide and it helped us save tons of cash on trashy, overly expensive store brand dog foods.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book comes across as a non-expert's unfounded tirade against an imagined enemywithout proof or intelligent comment
I was greatly disappointed in this book. I expected to find intelligent and clearly laid out facts about what various dog foods contain, what these ingredients do to my dog and rationale on what to feed them to avoid the bad substances which I am sure can be found in most dogs foods.

While the intent behind this book appeared to be commendable the contents are completely unfounded and unresearched and not to mention badly written.

The author has clearly not researched the assertions made in her book and has not managed to prove even one. There are no references to her claims. For instance the claims that dog foods contain contaminants like pentobarbital, colourants and endotoxins. There are also no references for the claims about what these substances actually do.

In reading something like this I would like to see very specific scientific references that show the truth of what the author is stating. The best the author could come up with was a quote from CNN about the addition of melamine to pet food. In fact the CNN reporter said "Somebody may have added melamine...".

Many of the author's statements seem without a point to them. There is (allegedly) cereal grain and gluten added to pet food but at no point is the reason why this is such a bad thing ever stated. Furthermore there is nothing listing the actual ingredients in the dog foods that the author apparently investigated and no where does the part of dog food that is good come to light.

Lastly, I thought that the list of recipes would be helpful even if the text was not. I was surprised, though, to find recipes containing cheese and recipes for icecream containing only sugary ingredients. The recipes go against claims about not giving your dog too much salt as there is in cheese (not to mention how highly processed supermarket cheese is) and the previous litany against the sugars added to dog food.

I suppose I should not be surprised because a look at the author's background reveals that she is not a professional health practitioner of any sort but rather a trainer and dog owner only. Clearly she does not have the background to write this sort of content.

About the writing:

The writing is immature and has not been edited. In places the author lapses into incomplete sentences, particularly in list like the list of foods to avoid. "This causes dogs intestinal gas - avoid it" was used several times in that particular list.

Unfortunately the book was particularly hard to read because of the lack of formatting. Paragraphs were not separated properly. Chapters are not started on their own pages and there is no table of contents. While these are the problems plaguing the eBook industry as a whole I take exception to paying for a book that has not been properly formatted. If a publisher were to release a book like in print would you agree to pay for it? I think not.

The book comes across as a non-expert's unfounded tirade against an imagined enemy without a shred of proof or even intelligent comment. Rather spend your money and time on another book, preferably with professional background.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy read however the recipes do not follow the authors guidelines for a balanced diet
Got this book on my kindle and read it in about 2 hours. Its an easy read and gives a general view over what a dogs diet should comprise of. Author writes a very convincing argument for home cooked dog diets versus commercial dog food. Love the lists in the back of the book. However the recipes (the reason I bought the book) did not follow the 50% meat 30% veggie 30% grain rule. Most of the recipes are unbalanced. Since they are unbalanced you cant feed your dog them everyday.Following the recipe's (in my case with 3 chihuahuas) amount will yield quite a few unhealthy meals. What would I do with all that excess? So all the book provided me was with recipes for occasional treats and tasty occasional meals.

IT DID provide a background in how to balance the diet however the author of this book is not a board certified veterinary nutritionist so who knows how accurate the information is. She bases her 50:30:30 ratio (with other once or twiceweek extras) on experience as a dog trainer, breeder and pet owner. In my opinion her advice sounds good but there really the only way to know is to buy another book from a board certified veterinary nutritionist to find out! I would recommend to skip this book unless you want a few treat recipes and get a book written by a someone who is certified to write about dog's dietary needs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Long in the Tooth
I think this is a worthwhile book to own even though its 1996 publishing date makes it a bit dated. It's worth adding to one's collection, but because of some shortcomings should not be the only book of its type on one's shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars by English vet; limited usefulness for American dog owners
This dog care book is well written and illustrated but written for an English audience rather than American. Differences in language can be confusing: for example "animal-care assistants" are refered to as "unqualified". In US English, "unqualified" means "incompetent". In the Queen's English, "unqualified" means that one has not beenadmitted to a profession (eg: vet).More serious problems in the book include the ommission of some diseases that occur in the US, such as "corona virus", a potentially greater killer of puppies. Also, this book has NO information whatever on spaying or neutering a dog. In the US, almost all responsible persons spay or neuter, and the surplus dog population mainly comes from irresponsible low-lifes. In contrast, in England it is much less common for even responsible persons to spay or neuter. Indeed, some vets consider it quite immoral. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Puppy Raising Advice Book!
Before I adopted my puppy, I bought several puppy care books, including this one. This book was by far the best. In the section covering "what to expect from your growing pup" the author tells us what to expect from our puppy at different ages throughout puppyhood. She was right on point. I lived by this book when my puppy was growing, and referred back to it when I adopted my second dog. There is also a wonderful section about healthcare and first aid which helps us deal with day to day healthcare issues, and helps identify which matters require a vet's care and which ones can be taken care of at home. I refer back to this book quite often. I have also purchased this book as a gift for several friends and family members as each took a puppy into their family. This book is an indispensible tool in raising a puppy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book but not what it proposes to be
I think this is an excellent book for an overview of Great Danes and the considerations in deciding to own one.Making the decision to get a giant breed is a big one and this book is great for considering all that comes along with that.I would say it's better for people to read BEFORE deciding whether to buy a Great Dane to prepare and make sure you're up for all that's involved, but as far as a complete book for a Great Dane owner, I would recommend getting a book that has more specifics on the various topics rather than just an overview. This is NOT a one and only book for the Great Dane owner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Corpoations should be Socially Responsible
Dog fighting is wrong. This book is wrong to purchase and wrong to sell.Dog fighting hurts more than the pets that fight. Other dogs are used as bait for training purposes.Sometimes these animals are family pets stolen from back yards. The dog fighting ring breeds other illegal activities involving drugs and other forms of violence and abuse. As a former teacher on the Mexican border my students have attended dog fighting events (child abuse, in my opinion). These children have a greater lack of concern for any form of life and, especially, a lack of respect to animals in ways they do not recognize as wrong. For instance, one of my 10 year-old students walked up to a non-threatening dog and kicked it repeatedly later reporting she did so because the dog had fleas.Anyone aiding and abetting the sale of a book that teaches lowlifes how to run this terrible business and hobby need to realize the profits from this bookbook can never outweigh the social cost this book represents. Amazon, I have purchased over $300 from your site over the last two months and planned to buy something this weekend and many gifts for Christmas.I will not, however, purchase anything from your site until this item is removed.Furthermore, I will use my blogs and social networking accounts to spread this sentiment far and wide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusting Book
I give this book a zero rating and negative review. I am completely disgusted that you would sell this book. Carrying this book is like instructing people to perform an illegal act. While you may have the right to carry it, you should consider the ethical ramifications of carrying it. With freedom of speech comes great responsibility. As for it being a historical account, not all things from our history should be glorified or promoted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really, now...
If zero stars or negative stars were possible, I'd have assigned such a rating, but considering they're not, I gave this item as low a rating as is humanly possible.

Free speech is one thing, but selling a book that is in line with illegal activity is just plain wrong.I'm certain that, if I ran into a restaurant and screamed, "FIIIIIIIRE!!!!!!!!", the inducement of panic that I'd likely cause wouldn't be defensible under my 1st Amendment rights.

Selling books that somehow promote illegal activity truly borders on abuse of 1st Amendment rights, anyhow (with the general tipping toward the side of actual abuse).Believe me, if this book were written about "How To Manufacture Vicodin In Your Own Home," or "How To Turn Household Drugs OTHER Than Pseudoephedrine Into Methamphetamines," methinks that the DEA would have something to say about its sale through this website.

I'm all for free speech and all, but rights are given to those who have the *maturity* and the *presence of conscience* to know how and when to exercise them.Otherwise, we usually take them away. For more information on that topic, please look up "incarceration."

While I am sure it would not be possible to control the sale of this book to those who, by hook or by crook ("crook" being the operative word, here), would want to get their hands on it, shame on Amazon.com for offering it openly, kudos offered by others be damned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon needs to stop selling this book!
Dog fighting is a horrible problem throughout the US. Amazon should NOT be selling this book. Dog fighting is ILLEGAL and HARMFUL to innocent lives. It gives pit bulls a bad name, when they are very loyal pets. You may call this freedom of speech but whoever buys this book is planning on breaking the law, and you Amazon WILL be held responsible when they do if they got the information from your site. You should consider the legal and ethical ramifications and do the right thing and BAN this book!!

1-0 out of 5 stars I Am Stunned!
I am stunned that Amazon is selling this book. This is not only outdated and absurd, it is hateful and promotes violence and abuse against innocent beings.I have purchased many things from your company, but, that ceases now, for me and my family and friends.I have let everyone that I know, even on FB, about this and asked them to boycott Amazon.com.You see, also in this day and age, there are people like me who have the guts to speak up and stand up for what's right. What you are doing is wrong, wrong, wrong. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Collie book!!
I thought this book was great. It was packed with a whole lot of information for such a tiny book.I would recommend this book for anyone who has a collie!!It has everything.. from grooming to little specifics about the breed. This is definately one of the best books to have as part of any dog manual collection!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for new Collie owners
As a previous dog owner, but new to the Collie breed, I found this book very helpful. Collies are just "different" from other dogs, and their care and training has to be treated as such. Information included in this book was a huge help to me as a new collie owner. If you've never had a collie before and are thinking of adding one to your family, buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's printed on.
This book has very little information for someone who already understands how to take care of any dog.Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collies are cool
this is a pretty good book. I learned a lot from it. It really helps you learn about collies before you get one. I wouldn't have known how to take care of my collie if i wouldn't have read the book. It's a good buy and if you want a collie you should buy this book. It will help a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Manual for Collie Owners, New and Experienced
What a delightful experience to read this little book. It contains information critical to every owner of a Collie, no matter how long the person has had this beautiful breed. Mr. Sundstrom has touched on virtuallyevery aspect of the Collie from heritary health problems to rescue groupsdedicated to finding homes for those dogs who have been abandoned orsurrendered to Humane Societies. Had this book been available years ago, asa Collie breeder, I would have given one to each puppybuyer.

Congratulations to Hal Sundstrom and to Amazon for making thiswonderful rendering available. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In this complete book on retrievers and their training, we enter the world of Tom Quinn, one of America's most successful breeders and trainers of bird dogs. Quinn explains the methods he has used in developing a remarkable series of champion retrievers, including his first Labrador bitch, Nakai Anny, who won honors as Field Champion and Amateur Field Champion, and is a member of the Retriever Hall of Fame.

THE WORKING RETRIEVERS covers every aspect of training dogs for hunting and field trials, from the beginning to the most advanced levels. The book also surveys the various retriever breeds--Labradors, Goldens, Chesapeakes, and others--and their histories. Quinn then takes us, step by step, through the training process.

Also included is information on feeding, care, and transportation; breeding; buying and selling; and other matters of vital importance. Accompanied with photographs, line drawings, and a gorgeous, 16-page, full-color insert with both photographs and some of the author's own fabulous paintings, THE WORKING RETRIEVERS is an expert, comprehensive guide to be cherished by all who love retrievers. It belongs on every outdoorsman's bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Retriever Training
When I was learning about cheating singles (that retriever training, not infidelity), the diagrams were a great introduction. If you are trying to follow a training flowchart for general training, Lardy'sor Graham's book would be most comprehensive.

I like how this helps me round out my knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you a hunt test or field trial
participant.this is the book for you.I am an amateur trainer and have bought all the well known dvds and instructional books and this is by far the most in depth training tool i have found.it covers everything from basics to preparing your dog for all-age stakes, and give some of the best drills not found in other training material.a must buy for the competition trainer!

Recommended by Westwind Farm. The section specifically on Chesapeakes is very short (about 1/2 page of general info).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Working Retrievers
This is the third copy of Tom's exquisite book; he is the consummate gentleman whom I had the great pleasure of getting to know him at the Field Trials in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.I have gifted his marvelous and thorough tome to some of my favorite people who have recently purchased black Labs -- I've had these wonderful animals most of my life and every time I start a new pup, I immediately turn to Tom's book for helpful tips and I always learn something new.It is a treasure that any retriever owner should add to his or her library!Having lost several of my beloved Labs, Tom's poignant eulogy provides some comfort for my distress, and I heartily endorse anything he writes (or paints, for that matter since he is such an accomplished artist.

Good book I think. My grandson seemed happy to get it but I have not checked since he received it to see if it was helpful. Since it was a Christmas present I wish it had been hardback. ... Read more
