5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable true story
An Ordinary Soldier is the inspirational memoir of Charles William Gebhardt, who served in the 7th Infantry Division of the 17th Infantry Regiment, whose duties took them from the Aleutians to the Marshall Islands to the Philippines. He encountered life-threatening battles and during the course of World War II, yet also forged enduring friendships. Written by Gebhardt's nephew, An Ordinary Soldier follows his service from his difficult childhood and the rigors of boot camp into the true hell of combat. He would belong to the group that wore the symbol and shared the nickname of the "Hourglass". A remarkable true story that brings the Pacific Theater experience to vivid life, and a welcome contribution to military history and biography shelves.

This book is written in the memory of my uncle Charles and for those who fought during World War II. Many stories have been written about the conflict of WWII, but many stories will never be written because they have been lost or forgotten through time. I have written this book of my uncle Charles and his best friend Harold, knowing that there are many stories like this that will never be told and for them this book remebers you. We must remember this great generation of our fathers for they have kept our freedom with their heroic sacrifices. Please read and enjoy this story and remember those who have fallen.

My best wishes to all who have served our country in time of war and peace and are fighting yet today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great WW 2 US divisional history
Summary: Activated: 3 February 1941. Overseas: 5 October 1942. Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe. Days of combat: 242. The 29th Infantry Division trained in Scotland and England for the crosschannel invasion, October 1942-June 1944. Teamed with the 1st Division, a regiment of the 29th (116th Infantry) was in the first assault wave to hit the beaches at Normandy on D-day, 6 June 1944. Landing on Omaha Beach on the same day in the face of intense enemy fire, the Division soon secured the bluff tops and occupied Isigny, 9 June. The Division cut across the Elle River and advanced slowly toward St. Lo, fighting bitterly in the Normandy hedge rows. After taking St. Lo, 18 July 1944, the Division joined in the battle for Vire, capturing that strongly held city, 7 August. Turning west, the 29th took part in the assault on Brest, 25 August-18 September 1944. After a short rest, the Division moved to defensive positions along the Teveren-Geilenkirchen line in Germany and maintained those positions through October. (In mid-October the 116th Infantry took part in the fighting at the Aachen Gap.) On 16 November the Division began its drive to the Roer, blasting its way through Siersdorf, Setterich, Durboslar, and Bettendorf, and reaching the Roer by the end of the month. Heavy fighting reduced Julich Sportplatz and the Hasenfeld Gut, 8 December. From 8 December 1944 to 23 February 1945, the Division held defensive positions along the Roer and prepared for the offensive. The attack jumped off across the Roer, 23 February, and carried the Division through Julich, Broich, Immerath, and Titz, to Munchen-Gladbach, 1 March 1945. The Division was out of combat in March. In early April the 116th Infantry helped mop up in the Ruhr area. On 19 April 1945 the Division pushed to the Elbe and held defensive positions until 4 May. Meanwhile, the 175th Infantry cleared the Klotze Forest. After VE-day, the Division was on military government duty in the Bremen enclave. Nickname: Blue and gray. Slogan: 29 Lets Go. Shoulder patch: Circular, containing the nomad, Korean symbol of eternal life. The #1 book on sports scholarships, completely updated and revised!

$1 billion of athletic scholarships are awarded each year

But student-athletes who aren't big-time recruits miss out on tens of thousands of dollars of financial aid available to them. The problem is students and parents don't know where the money is or how to get it.

  • Discover the secrets to getting a sports scholarship
  • Over seventeen hundred colleges offer athletic programs.
  • Over 500,000 athletes participate in sports in the nation's college programs.
  • But less than 1% (about 4,000) of them get Division I, full-ride financial aid grants.

The truth is: 80% of all college athletic opportunities are located outside Division I!

But to seize those opportunities, you must take control of your own recruiting process—recruiting, research and homework, exposure and promotion, and negotiating—all in the environment of a high-stakes contest where only the opposition knows the rules.

This book will give you the edge.

If you aren't one of the 4,000, but are athletically and academically qualified to participate in college sports, The Sports Scholarships Insider's Guide will lead you step by step through the twists, turns, and all too often unpleasant surprises to achieve your ultimate goal of a roster position and financial aid for your athletic ability.

"Practical, step-by-step information in a clear and conversational manner."
School Library Journal

Dion Wheeler, former coach and recruiting consultant, gives students and their parents the inside edge to not only find great scholarships, but get the best offer no matter what their skill level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and Great Author
I am a public school teacher and sports coach who was a scholarship athlete at a division one university; I wished Coach Wheeler would have written this book twenty years ago. I have used his book to help out my kids whom I teach and coach at my school-the book is a valuable resource to help kids understand that there are options to help them attend a fine university or college. I ran into a couple of questions I wanted to ask the author (Coach Wheeler), about his book and he promptly emailed me with some guidance. In today's world, which author do you know who will respond to his readers questions?

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book as a resource
I purchased this book based on previous reviews written.I have to say it is an excellent resource.I even contacted the author and he has provided me with some additional information to assist my daughters in our recruiting endenvour.

5-0 out of 5 stars My guide!
Coach Wheeler has written a remarkable book! My daughter, Rachel, has completed a successful junior track season. We were confused and disappointed by the paucity and caliber of recruiting contacts she received, so I needed some guidance. An associate of mine alerted me to the Sports Scholarship Insider's Guide. I purchased the book and we entered a high stakes contest as the book says, "and only the opposition knows the rules". And in our recruiting experience it is obvious, they aren't sharing those rules with parents. The mother of one of her teammates learned that I was devouring the book and asked if she too, could read it. My unfortunate answer was yes. Shortly, I realized that one of the book's most valuable assets is as a ready reference and situational guide. The Goal Setting Chapter for the athlete guided her to learn to set a goal and helped her design a plan of action to achieve it. The Chapter on Questions To Ask is valuable to parents because it brutally defines how little we know of the process and for athletes because it can be handily used during phone calls and visits. The Chapter on Negotiating Skills prepares parents with actual dialogues to use negotiating strategies, devices and tactics that would be the envy of any used car salesman. Four chapters illuminate and candidly explain Division III duplicity in awarding financial aid for athletic ability and teach how to use that knowledge to a parent's advantage. Want to cut to the chase? Find the two "killer questions". I now recongnize that her high school coach can't get her an athletic scholarship and it's ourresponsibility to create the kind of exposure that can. We used one idea from the book and on the shortest of notice a college coach contacted and talked with Rachel at the State Track Meet, as well as generated an unofficial next week. The mother bought her own book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It simply works!
First let me start by saying that two weeks ago my son committed to a 5- year scholarship at a D-1A sports program. This school is ranked #2 in the country for this particular sport. Initially I bought 5 books when starting the process. This one was for me very easy to follow and had a nice step-by-step process. It is not all that we used, but it provided us with the framework that we built our recruiting process around. When others ask us how we did it, we tell them to first read this book and then check in with us.

One thing that I really like about it was that it covers how to get a scholarship from a D-1, D-2, and D-3 or NAIA division school. Just add talent and good grades and your kid is on his or her way.

Happy hunting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and useful information
The book is actually fun to read and provides very good information.I have a high school junior this year and believe that the information in this book is preparing us to understand and anticipate the recruiting process. ... Read more

Product Description
For the soldier on the front lines of World War II, a lifetime of terror and suffering could be crammed into a few horrific hours of combat. This was especially true for members of the 99th Infantry Division who repelled the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge and engaged in some of the most dramatic, hard-fought actions of the war.

Once Upon a Time in War presents a stirring view of combat from the perspective of the common soldier. Author Robert E. Humphrey personally retraced the path of the 99th through Belgium and Germany and conducted extensive interviews with more than three hundred surviving veterans.

When Humphrey discovered that many 99ers had gone to their graves without telling their stories, he set about to honor their service and coax recollections from survivors. The memories recounted here, many of them painful and long repressed, are remarkable for their clarity. These narratives, seamlessly woven to create a collective biography, offer a gritty reenactment of World War II from the enlisted man's point of view.

Although focused on a single division, Once Upon a Time in War captures the experiences of all American GIs who fought in Europe. For readers captivated by Band of Brothers, this book offers an often tragic, sometimes heartwarming, but always compelling read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Son of a Co. B 393rd dogface
Robert Humphrey has done more than review military archives and charts, he has placed the reader in the presence of a virtual soldier at the battle frontOnce Upon a Time in War: The 99th Division in World War II (Campaigns and Commanders)

5-0 out of 5 stars "Private" revelations
This is not your typical war story. The author, Robert Humphrey, chronicles the exploits and tribulations faced by the 99th Infantry Division, forged late in the war and not sent to Europe until the eve of that great final German thrust, The Battle of the Bulge. The story is told at the "dogface" level. You live with these soldiers through basic training and suffer the same disappointments many of them felt when they were sent to a college in order to qualify as officers but were abruptly yanked out midway and sent to the front. While the Division was active in the war for only six months they were front and center at the Battle of the Bulge, the crossing of the Rhine at Remagen, the clearing of the Ruhr pocket and when they finally hooked up with Patton for the mop up and occupation of Bavaria.

Humphrey, over the years, wrote for the 99th Division newsletter (Checkerboard) and became close to many of the Division's survivors. Through interviews with numerous 99th veterans he has compiled a narrative of compelling strength. The palpable fear in the foxhole, the nagging hunger, cold, filth and death were the combat soldier's constant companions.Because it was the misfortune of the 99th to be placed in the center of the line in the Ardennes they were overrun by German advance forces and many were captured. Humphrey interviewed several of these former POW'S who had riveting stories to tell about their captivity and treatment by both the prison guards and the local civilians. But he was still not finished and closes the circle in the final chapter relating many personal stories of the Division's return home and the various ways in which the vets were received.

While this is a poignant story woven from hundreds of personal recollections the author maintained a seamless account of a division in battle. This book is a must read for anyone that has ever been interested in the "reality" of combat at the personallevel and who has wondered how they would have fared if they had been there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Note of Gratitude
To The Author:

Dear Mr. Humphrey:

Of all of the people I could think of thanking in my lifetime, you would be in the top tier of that list.I had finished your book Once Upon A Time in War, a few weeks ago and I was deeply moved by the vivid imagery and the visceral prose as offered by those you had interviewed.I very much appreciated the detail, care, and respect you provided in honoring the men of the 99th.My father served with the 99th in the 324th Engineer Combat Battalion.None of us knew what our father's had endured during that terrible time because they simply could not talk about it.From all that one could read from your interviews, painstaking research and historical accounts, it is no wonder why.I was often moved to tears when reading of the terrible sacrifices these young men had made. There are no words that can properly describe my thanks to you for this gift you have given to me, to future generations and the honor that you have bestowed upon those who served. For a brief time, you brought my father back to me.Thank you so very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Once Upon A Time In War is The Book for anyone interested in the history of WW II.Mr. Humphrey has not only done an excellent coverage of the 99th Division, but also found and described the thoughts and feelings of all front line infantrymen of all divisions as they faced the Germans and tried to live through their fight and come home to resume a normal life.Interviews from 363 veterans of the 99th, some wounded, some captured some funny remembrances, many horror memories, were used by Robert as he composed this book and these interviews covered an extensive range of topics from training through the end of the war. Many personal thoughts were described as the interviewed veterans of the 99th shared some of the secrets they had kept locked away for over fifty years.Anyone searching for information relating to the 99th Division would definitely see this book as a gold mine of information and those just seeking historical WW II information will also find this book a necessity in understanding what a front line American soldier saw and endured as he sacrificed his youth and many times his life for his country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This satisfied my craving to learn everything there is to know about the battles fought by the 99th Division and the importance of what they were able to accomplish through personal sacrifices.Shocking experiences of hardships are woven throughout every sentence in the book!Amazing attention to details and maps make the military history clear and understandable. ... Product Description
"No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great--Duty First!" For almost a century, from the Western Front of World War I to the deserts of Iraq, this motto has spurred the soldiers who wear the shoulder patch bearing the Big Red One. In this first comprehensive history of America's 1st Infantry Division, James Scott Wheeler chronicles its major combat engagements and peacetime duties during its legendary service to the nation.

The oldest continuously serving division in the U.S. Army, the "Fighting First" has consistently played a crucial role in America's foreign wars. It was the first American division to see combat and achieve victory in World War I and set the standard for discipline, training, endurance, and tactical innovation. One of the few intact divisions between the wars, it was the first army unit to train for amphibious warfare. During World War II, the First Division spearheaded the invasions of North Africa and Sicily before leading the Normandy invasion at Omaha Beach and fighting on through the Hürtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, the Ruhr Pocket, and deep into Germany. By war's end, it had developed successful combined-arms, regimental combat teams and made advances in night operations.

Wheeler describes the First Division's critical role in postwar Germany and as the only combat division in Europe during the early Cold War. After returning to the United States at Fort Riley, Kansas, the division fought valiantly in Vietnam for five trying years, successfully protecting Saigon from major infiltration along Highway 13 while pioneering "air-mobile" operations. It led the liberation of Kuwait in Desert Storm and kept an uneasy peace in Bosnia and Kosovo. Along the way, Wheeler illuminates the division's organizational evolution, its consistently remarkable commanders and leaders, and its equally remarkable soldiers.

Meticulously detailed and engagingly written, The Big Red One reflects the larger chronicle of America's military experience over the past century.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HISTORY OF FIRST INFANTRY DIVISION
Excellent.Wonderful.My Dad was in the First Infantry Division and after reading this book I felt as though I knew something about what he lived though.Very well written and highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive History of the 1st Infantry Division
James Scott Wheeler's "The Big Red One: America's Legendary 1st Infantry Division from World War I to Desert Storm" is a very good, comprehensive history of the 1st Infantry Division in the 20th century.Established during World War I, the Big Red One has been in continuous service since and has fought in every major conflict since then except the Korean War.

When I joined the Big Red One in 2002, I was shocked that there was not a current comprehensive history of the division.Fortunately, the Cantigny First Division Foundation encouraged Dr. Wheeler to write this authoritative division history.

Wheeler traces the history of the division from its early training in World War I as it was the first American division to ship to France and fight in Europe. He focuses his story on the units that did the fighting, their commanders, and many of the division commanders. He also focuses on the training that the unit went through and their inter-war missions, from the occupation of Germany to the Pentomic division-era to its Cold War mission. Most interestingly, Wheeler parallels the history of the Big Red One with the 20th century Army's history, and shows how the division's mission and circumstances represented the bigger Army's high points and difficult times.

Despite these strengths, the book does have a couple of minor weaknesses. One is that the maps, so important in military history, are taken from other sources and are of uneven quality - most are not very good. Also, Wheeler seems to shy away from confronting or discussing any of the controversial aspects of the division's history, such as the firing of Terry Allen and Teddy Roosevelt in Sicily or the sometimes-criticized tactics and doctrine of General Dupuy during Vietnam.

Still, this book is a very good unity history of the First Infantry Division.Although it is not as gripping of a read as some other military histories, that is because Wheeler focuses on telling the whole story - even the duller parts. This is a much-needed history of the Big Red One and I hope that Dr. Wheeler will soon produce a second edition covering the division's actions in the Balkans, Turkey, and Iraq.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obviously biased and badly researched
In response to the review by the so-called teacher from Belfast(who couldn't even spell teacher, and several other words) I must point out that this is a review of the book, nota forum for you to air your bigotry and hatred of a certain organisation. This book is obviously badly researched, relying on information from sources who have reason to show the INLA in a bad light. It would have benefitted from the input of a range of objective and informed contributors who want to present a well researched and true reflection of this organisation. And, as I currently live in Northern Ireland, and have lived there all my life, you may not find it so easy to discredit my opinion on this matter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be filed under "Fiction"
As a member of the IRSM for the past 18 years, I am well aware of the movement this work claims to be the history of, and it is from this vantage point that I can state it is so filled with false information it isimpossible to rely upon as a historical source.

From start to finish theauthors depart from any pretense of historical objectivity and instead turnof vicious black propaganda of the worst sort.

Noone active in the IrishRepublican Socialist Movement was interviewed for the book, but instead itis based almost entirely on the testimony of Harry Flynn, who left themovement in 1983-84 in a bitter dispute and never returned. Never, that is,other than in a strange alliance with Gerard Steeson who had once orderedhis death, the sole purpose of which was to destroy the Irish NationalLiberation Army.

Even the supposed interview with the INLA's chief ofstaff published as an appendix is false, having actually been composed byIRSP member Liz LaGrua in response to written questions the authorsubmitted.

1-0 out of 5 stars When is history not history?
As a researcher of Irish republican history, I would concur with a previous review. 'Deadly Divisions' is an inaccurate and largely fictionalized account of the INLA. Some of the notes used by the authorsare available in Belfast, and after viewing these documents it becomesclear that the authors' primary sources were a few individuals outside ofthe movement who are/were hostile to the INLA and had political andpersonal reasons to undermine the organization. Furthermore, the authorsapparently took the word of these individuals as 'gospel' when writingtheir so-called 'history' as in several sections what these sources saidwas repeated verbatim in the book without any effort to authenticate theinformation from other sources, including members of the IRSP or INLA.Indeed, 'Deadly Divisions' casts the INLA in such a negative light solelybecause the bulk of the information the authors had access to was biasedagainst the organization. It does not seem that the authors strove to writea fair or balanced account, and as such it is an interesting read but very, very poor history indeed. Hopefully in the near future new works will bepublished which will cast a very different and more accurate light on thisorganization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well, if "Irish" Americans hate it, it must be good!
I see the "reader from texas" didn't like this.Well, anyone who defends terrorism from the quaint seclusion of america, as opposed to my experience of every day life in orthern Ireland is entitled to theirview... but they are talking through their rear end!

I'm a historytecaher in Northern Ireland.Let me tell you this is an excellent study ofa tawdry little band of thugs and murderers.t exposes to a tee the sortof lowlife scum they were, and details their many divisions and feuds whenthankfully they exterminated each other.

Come and live here, "readerfrom Texas"!Come and see the pain these miserable cowards caused!

1-0 out of 5 stars More fiction than fact, enemies used to relay INLA history.
The trouble with this easy to read book is the fact that Jack Holland and Henry McDonald used people outside the Republican Socialist Movement, namely former members of IPLO, to tell the history of the INLA.With thisobvious bias, of course it will be a hatchet job.

It is akin to having ahistory of the IRA written with the aid of loyalists or IRA informers, whohave reason to paint the organisation as negatively as possible.

The mainproblem beyond this, then, is that it is referred to as the ultimatehistory of the INLA, and used to discredit the republican socialistmovement. For those with an anti-republican or anti-socialist agenda, their needs are met with this book.

Sadly, people have bought the myth ofthe INLA that this book presents, much to the detriment of activists andsupporters of the movement.

While the authors never even bothered tointerview members of the IRSP or INLA for their book, it is still amust-have book if you can locate a copy, which is easier said thandone.

Again, it's easy to read, and it does give some basic backgroundinfo, but the maze of speculation and unfounded allegations passed as factmakes it a bad start for a beginner. ... Read more

Product Description
"Philadelphia" is a patchwork of the political and economic changes dating back to 1683. Having been re-created repeatedly, each era of the city's development includes elements of the past. In this book, the authors describe the city's evolution into a post-industrial metropolis of old communities and newly expended neighborhoods, in which remnants of 19th-century industries can be seen in today's residential areas. This book explores a wide range of issues impacting upon Philadelphia's post-industrial economy trends in housing and homelessness, the business community, job distribution, a disintegrating political structure, and increased racial, class, and neighborhood conflict. The authors examine the growth of the service sector, the disparity in the city's urban renewal program that has enriched center city but left most neighborhoods in need, and they evaluate the realistic prospects for regional solutions to some of the problems facing Philadelphia and its suburbs.
