WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The “market” is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

The latent demand for microfilming and microfiche equipment, cameras, and computer output is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

For reasons discussed later, this report does not consider the notion of “unit quantities”, only total latent revenues (i.e., a calculation of price times quantity is never made, though one is implied). The uni ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for microfilming and microfiche equipment, cameras, and computer output across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for microfilming and microfiche equipment, cameras, and computer output. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

Product Description
This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "microfilming and microfiche equipment, cameras, and computer output" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!
This book showed the many beautiful and varied options from a simple photo to an elaborate work of art. Very inspirational and well illustrated.Although the author acknowledged that the step-by-step instructions using Photoshop Elements would not be included, there was enough information to proceed. However, it is essential to have some knowledge of Photoshop or find it elsewhere in order not to get confused with the process. The Help file on your program solves this issue.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photo Quilts
One of the best books I own on photo quilts. Goes past just printing a photo on the fabric. If you work with Photoshop and want to take your work beyond the typical by using filters and other techniques, this is the book you want. I was lucky enough to see some of her work in person and it is stunning. This book tells you how she does it.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This book is nothing like I thought it was going to be....granted, she teaches you to "play" with your photos, copy them onto fabric (either your own, or pre-readied fabric for your printer), then create a fabric collage...all of her art quilts are a fabric collage!!... I thought that she would teach me to create quilts that entail piecing or appliquing fabric ...
I am very disappointed with this book and am sorry I bought it...

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine guide
Transform digital photos into fabric art with Artistic Photo Quilts, a survey on how to use camera, computer and cloth for special projects. From blending photos for special effects to using filters, brush tools, and making theme quilts, the author's experiences contribute to a fine guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This is the perfect book for the quilter like myself who is interested in photo transfer and using Photoshop Elements. The author really opened my eyes to the photographic possibilities out there and how to manipulate them into wonderful quilts. I carry my camera with me everywhere now! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make your Canon become a POWERshot
I recently purchased a Canon Powershot SD1200IS. Although this is a great little camera, the accompanying Canon user manual leaves a lot to be desired. The Canon manual tells you what buttons to push to access the various features, but it doesn't tell you where, when, and why you might use many of these features.

This book fills that void admirable. The book covers G, S, TX, A, and SD series cameras in the Canon line. Although written in 2007, it can still be used with Canon cameras introduced later--such as my SD1200IS--without any difficulties.

So if you want to do more with your Canon Powershot than just take pictures in automatic mode, get this guide. You'll be taking great pictures even when conditions are not so great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I can't believe I was taking crappy pictures for so long without this book. I finally decided to do something about it. I bought the canon powershot sd1000 about 2 years ago and then it was top of the line. I said what am I doing wrong, as all my subjects faces were too bright if I used the flash, too dark or blurry without, and other problems as well. I got this book the other day and whoa! Totally different pix! They have gotten 100x better in my opinion. I have to tell you I never bothered to learn about the camera settings and what a mistake that was. I would just use the auto feature all the time. Now that I am using the settings to my advantage my pix come out awesome. Yay!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the book to have
Throw away your owners manual (just kidding... it is nice to have for adjustment instructions and a soft place to rest your camera). This is "THE BOOK" to have! Simple instructions allowing for a full understanding of both the camera and how to better take good photos!

4-0 out of 5 stars more information than the manual
I own 2 of these point and shoot camera and they are great cameras, this is a better book than the manual, and easier to read and follow. excellent book to have if you own canon cameras.

4-0 out of 5 stars a great companion book for a great "stepping-stone" camera line
The PowerShot line fits in between Canon's true point-and-shoots (Elph) and dSLR (Rebel/EOS) cameras. As such, they're for people who are now learning that there's more to photography than just taking "snapshots"--i.e., pictures with next-to-no thought put in to them. There are many individual models within the PowerShot product line covering a range of potential complexity, but they still have more in common with each other than not.

After a brief overview of various PowerShot models and their specific controls, this book focuses on using the various settings and modes without going into a step-by-step every time. Your individual camera's manual already tells you exactly what button or menu-sequence will access/enable a given function, so instead this book explains in layman's terms what each function actually does.

The second half of the book presents photography "basics" as they relate to the PowerShots, so you can start applying the just-described functions and bring your skills up a notch or three from the point-and-shoot crowd. For each concept, a practice picture is given with details on what settings were used and why, and how to apply the reasoning to your own photograph.

If you're already well-versed on things like changing exposure or using AFlock and other settings, then I'd say you've outgrown this book and not to bother with it: the manual that came with your specific camera should suffice. But if you're using a PowerShot as either a stepping stone before taking the financial plunge into dSLR or because you're simply tired of just taking snapshots, then this book will make an excellent learning companion. Scribble in it as you go and you'll find yourself reaching for your camera's manual less and less.

I would give it a 4.5 if I could, as it's exactly what I needed to get started with my new-to-me S5. What's keeping me from giving it a perfect score is the binding: I wish it was spiral-bound so that it would lay flat as I fuss with the camera trying out stuff. But I can easily take it to someplace like FedEx/Kinko's and have them put a spiral binding on it for me. ... Read more

Product Description

Adding ghostly images, transforming skin to fur, and creating stop-action photography are among the special effects digital photographers learn in this guide to manipulating a camera's conventional settings for unconventional and artistic effect. The camera itself provides the initial departure point from traditional photography as photographers are encouraged to use "incorrect" exposure settings, "poor" focus, and reflections to create striking and dramatic images. Instruction on popular digital imaging programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Kai's SuperGoo, and PhotoVista 3D provides photographers with the means to manipulate photographs further with creative filters that transform daytime shots into nighttime images, a library of facial components, and the ability to combine images to create a three-dimensional digital object. A section on printing both at home and at a lab includes simple tips for enhancing the impact of photographs on paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for New Users
I found the book to be a great introduction to new users of the Digital camera.
After you get past the 20 Techniques in the first 4 chapters, you will have learned the basics of Digital Photography. These include shutter speed, focal length, f-stop, exposure and histogram plus many other important Digital camera functions.
The remaining chapters include Techniques that will help not only new Digital camera users but also, those that might be considered more experienced. Features such as image handling, editing and printing are very helpful to all.
I found that all the Techniques in the book to be well presented and very easy to follow. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book - much more than its title!
From the title "50 Fast ... Techniques" I'd simply hoped for a collage of tips to quickly apply to different photo taking situations. Surprise! This is a comprehensive, clearly written and generously illustrated text designed to get the new digital photographer beyond "Auto" and on to understanding and using the settings and features of his camera.
The 20 Techniques in the first 4 Chapters build the foundation. Learn these first and you'll understand your camera and how to use its features and settings - including scene modes, shutter speed, f-stop, color balance, focal length, and the histogram - to control image quality features like exposure, sharpness, depth-of-field, and noise.
And you'll learn enough good photo basics to appreciate when and why which features are important.
It also goes well beyond the camera controls - covering composition, natural and flash lighting, tripods, and even care of memory cards and batteries.
Beyond those opening chapters, there's seemingly a Technique for every common photographic challenge - e.g. kids, portraits, pets, sports, nature, macro, waterfalls, stars and sky, landscapes, and panoramas. The illustrations are high quality, in color and well chosen; "tip boxes" highlight many special tidbits, and a 15 page index helps find everything.
Techniques even cover the oft neglected image handling challenges of digital photography - including editing, resizing and printing, sharing, organizing, and backing up. Although less complete and dated as software and services quickly evolve (this 2nd edition uses Photoshop Elements 3 and Elements 6 is out), these Techniques will get you started.
This book should get you started and be a great reference whenever you try something new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Information
This book was very useful when I first started using a digital camera. I was fairly new to photography and had very little knowledge of the subject. Not only did this book help me to expand on technique, it also gave me inspiration to learn more about photography in general. I am hooked. Not obsessed but certainly inspired. I still page through it from time to time, always getting a new perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for beginners and pro's alike.
I have been using digital cameras for the past five years and film for the 30 years before that.

I feel this was a worthwhile addition to my technical library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Much ado about nothing
This is a rather useless book most of the techniques are known even to amateurs. Its title is misleading you think you will get something about digital cameras and instead you get techniques that have already been given for analog camera. ... Read more
