Product Description
The implementation of the Marshall Plan in Denmark gave rise to serious conflicts between the Social Democratic government and the opposition -- and between the government and the business community. Vibeke Sorensen portrays the deep disagreement that existed regarding Danish economic policy in the post-war period, analysing also how this political disagreement characterised the Danish implementation of the plan. On the basis of thorough source studies, Sorensen questions the up until now appreciatory evaluation of the importance of the Marshall Plan for the Danish society. On one hand, the implementation played a role in initiating structural changes in the Danish economy, with the plan itself complementing the social democratic reconstruction policy during the first few post-war years. On the other hand, the social democratic government failed in its effort to create consensus regarding more stringent control of economic policy and recognition of the necessity of an industrialisation policy. As a result, the Marshall Plan had only limited success in Denmark. ... Read more

Product Description
Defiant Diplomacy analyzes the relationship between the United States and Denmark as allies in World War II and the Cold War. Cast as a biography of Henrik Kauffmann (1888–1963), a Danish diplomat serving in Washington (1939–1958), the book reveals how the Roosevelt Administration’s policy toward occupied Denmark was forced to address questions of paramount importance, particularly to Great Britain and Canada, regarding the general attitude of the neutral United States toward the war in Europe. The dramatic climax was President Roosevelt’s secret decision in early 1941 to establish military bases in Greenland, the Danish colony that became a crucial steppingstone between the United States and Europe during World War II and a strategic focal point in the nuclear strategies of the Cold War. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Denmark's foreign policy in 20th century
Bo Lidegaard's book is a must for anyone interested in Danish foreign relations in the 20th century. Henrik Kauffmann, a flamboyant and maverick career diplomat, was Denmark's Ambassador to the United States before, during and after WWII: he was instrumental in securing the status as allied (while the civil service government in Copenhagen collaborated with Nazi Germany); and he negotiated the Greenland deal which has been a cornerstone in Denmark's participation in NATO ever since. The book is also a compelling portrait of Kauffmann as a professional and an highly interesting description of practical diplomacy from WWI to the post-WWII period. Well written and researched it is a thrilling and fulfilling read. (Based on the Danish edition). ... Read more

Product Description
This book considers the role played by Denmark’s King Frederik II (1559-88) in the international diplomacy of the 'age of religious wars'. As Europe’s leading Lutheran sovereign, Frederik commanded great influence; his conviction that an international Catholic 'conspiracy' threatened to destroy Protestantism led him to work towards the creation of a Protestant alliance that included both Calvinist and Lutheran states.

Lockhart examines the role of religion in Frederik’s foreign policy, the motivations behind the king’s alliance-building projects, and the reasons behind the ultimate failure of Frederik’s policies.

This volume will be of interest to students of early modern diplomacy, sixteenth-century Protestantism, and the Scandinavian monarchies in the early modern period. ... Read more

This ground-breaking study of the role of crusading in late-medieval and early modern Denmark argues that crusading had a tremendous impact on political and religious life in Scandinavia all through the Middle Ages, which continued long after the Reformation ostensibly should have put an end to its viability within Protestant Denmark. ... Product Description
From the battle of Maldon in 991 during the reign of Æethelred (the Unready), England was invaded by Scandinavian armies of increasing size and ferocity. Swein Forkbeard, king of Denmark, played a significant part in these invasions, which culminated in the domination of England and the long reign of his son, Cnut. This analysis of the invasions demonstrates beyond doubt that Æthelred was no indolent and worthless king who bribed invading Vikings to go away: his relationship with the Scandinavian armies was more complex and more interesting than has been supposed. It is equally apparent that Swein was more than a marauding Viking adventurer: he was a sophisticated politician who laid the foundations for a great northern empire which was ruled by his descendents for many years after his death.New insight into this exciting period of English history is gained by focusing on the activities of Swein Forkbeard and, after his death in 1014, the Danish warlord Thorkell the Tall, both outstanding warriors and political leaders of what is sometimes called 'the Second Viking Age'. Many factors leading to the invasions and conquest are investigated through a critical analysis of the chronology of events, an explanation of the economic background, plotting the itineraries of the Scandinavian armies, and a fresh examination of the sources, including theAnglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Encomium, and John of Worcester's Chronicle. IAN HOWARD has a PhD from Manchester University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. After a career in industry and commerce, he has returned to full-time research and has produced several papers covering a variety of aspects of early medieval history. ... Read more

Product Description
This book traces the development of modern Scandinavian erotic cinema as it evolved in Denmark and Sweden, from the gentle Swedish naturalist films, starting with One Summer of Happiness in the 50s, to the controversial groundbreakers like I Am Curious (Yellow) of the 60s and on through to the dawn of "Liberated Denmark," where, in the early 70s, the abolition of censorship was celebrated in films like 24 Hours with Ilse and the production of a number of other films that were blatantly pornographic. Also considered is the influence of these films on other countries, particularly the United States, where Scandinavian erotic cinema helped to set in motion the sexual revolution and contributed to the end of film censorship. ... Product Description
John Henrik Clarke asked “why do we pull so little on the greatness that we have been in order to understand the greatness we still have to be?”I believe the answer lies in popular promotion, which means that we pull so little on that greatness primarily because we have been allowed or even encouraged to know so little about it, especially in the area of Black-on-White revolutionary violence. We are exposed to so little about amazing people like Hannibal Barca, Queen Nzingha, Toussaint L’Ouverture, Denmark Vesey, Queen Nanny, Yaa Asantewa, Dedan Kimathi, Amilcar Cabral, and Robert F. Williams. The logic, according to Paulo Freire, is simple, intelligent, and self-protective on the part of institutionalized White supremacy:“The oppressed must see examples of the vulnerability of the oppressor so that a contrary conviction [to the oppressor’s invincibility] can begin grow within them.Until this occurs, they will continue to be disheartened, fearful, and beaten.”
Although Whites are bombarded with heroic images of themselves in textbooks, television, and the big screen violently defeating their enemies, both real and imagined, and Black self-destruction is made infamous via various media, there is a remarkable void of comprehensive literature addressing how oppressed Blacks have historically committed the ultimate act of self-defense—killing their definitive enemy.
The ability of institutionalized White supremacy to deny the historical existence of armed Black rebellion against White supremacy is what makes it truly powerful according to Newton’s definition of power, which is “not in terms of how many people you can control. To us power is, first of all, the ability to define phenomena, and secondly, the ability to make these phenomena act in a desired manner.”
According to Gayraud Wilmore, “it now seems clear that, notwithstanding the suppression of information, the whole issue of black insurrections was underplayed—partly because of that peculiar racist predisposition of many to remember the Negroes as docile, accommodating collaborators in their own misery, waiting for whites to give them their freedom.”
Malcolm X proposed that “when you select heroes about which Black people ought to be taught, let them be Black heroes who have died fighting for the benefit of Black people…We need to be taught about [Black] people who fought, who bled for [their] freedom and made others bleed.”Black Spartacus fulfills that need.

Excerpt: Denmark issued ten definitive airmail stamps between 1925 and 1934 in two distinct series. The 1st series, commonly called The Plow and Airplane was first issued in June 1925. These stamps were designed by Danish artist Axel Peder Jensen (1885-1972). The 2nd series was issued on June 9, 1934 and depicted an airplane over Copenhagen. The second series remained in use until after World War II. The 1925 series comprises Denmark's 1st airmail stamps and their issue corresponded with the opening of Kastrup airport in Copenhagen and the carriage of regular airmails by Det Danske Luftfartselskab, the Danish national airline. The 1925 series was issued in denominations of 10, 15, 25, 50 øre and 1 krone. All the values were reissued in the 1930s. The Plow and Airplane design was created by Danish artist Axel P. Jensen and the stamps were printed by typography by H. H. Thiele in panes of 30 stamps arranged in five rows of six. During the design and printing process, essays, proofs and color proofs of the stamps were made to finalize the design. The 1925 series is known for several constant plate flaws that appear on the same stamp in each sheet consistently. These plate flaws have descriptive names. The 1934 series was issued in denominations of 10, 15, 20, 50 øre and 1 krone. The issue was designed by Poul E. Johansen and engraved by Jons Britze. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17877268 ...
