Excerpt: Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music, and emerged in the early 1950s. The term rockabilly is a portmanteau of rock (from rock 'n' roll) and hillbilly, the latter a reference to the country music (often called hillbilly music in the 1940s and 1950s) that contributed strongly to the style's development. Other important influences on rockabilly include western swing, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues. While there are notable exceptions, its origins lie primarily in the Southern United States. The influence and popularity of the style waned in the 1960s, but during the late 1970s and early 1980s, rockabilly enjoyed a major revival of popularity that has endured to the present, often within a rockabilly subculture. There was a close relationship between the blues and country music from the very earliest country recordings in the 1920s. The first nationwide "country" hit was "Wreck of the Old '97", backed with "Lonesome Road Blues", which also became very popular. Jimmie Rodgers, the "first true country star", was known as the Blue Yodeler, and most of his songs used blues-based chord progressions, although with very different instrumentation and sound than the recordings of his black contemporaries like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Bessie Smith. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Western swing is a style of popular music that evolved in the 1920s in the American Southwest among the region's popular Western string bands. Fundamentally an outgrowth of jazz, much Western swing is dance music with an up-tempo beat consisting of an eclectic combination of rural, cowboy, polka, and folk music, New Orleans jazz, or Dixieland, and blues blended with a jazzy "swing" and played by a hot string band often augmented with drums, saxophones, pianos and, notably, the steel guitar ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
If you enjoy old-style Cowboy songs or Western music, this is a great collection, as are most of the Reader's Digest songbooks. In addition to the interesting, historical paragraphs about each song, they are arranged in the book by decade, making it easy to find songs by era even if you can't remember their titles. Although I've had to transpose the guitar chords into singable keys for my range, the piano notation and popular chord symbos make sight reading easy. A great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth It
I wasn't sure what to expect in a older music book. When it arrived I was real surprised that it was in a very acceptable condition.Sure, it had been used but very gently and I can't fault anyone for that.I will be looking for more out of print music through Amazon.

Product Description
Country music may have existed before 1925-in barn dances, roadside taverns, tent shows, minstrel shows, and vaudeville-but it didn't become Country Music until the advent of radio and new stars were born. In Classic Country Singers, author Douglas B. Green (a.k.a. Ranger Doug from the Grammy-winning western group Riders in the Sky) celebrates the men and women who built the industry that gave us "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Blue Yodel," "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," and the Grand Ole Opry.

From the beginnings of bluegrass to honky-tonk to western swing and more, Classic Country Stars offers intimate biographies and cherished photos covering the careers of nearly fifty major stars from country music's first half-century, including beloved musicians such as Uncle Dave Macon, the Carter Family, and Jimmie Rodgers up to the pop-country hit makers of the 1950s like Eddy Arnold and Marty Robbins. Through war, depression, and the advent of rock and roll, these men and women pioneered a sound that moved from regional barn dances and radio stations to an international audience.
