Seven Cities of Gold
This book is part of a series on explorers of the new world that includes all the major players like Magellan, Columbus, De Soto etc. The book serves as a good introduction to Coronado(for a book report)orgood reference material for an extended report on a variety of subjects relating to the southwest. There are sufficient pictures throughout the 58 pages to hold a young readers interest. This biography deals with most aspects of the mans life without bogging the reader down with too many details. Like many childrens biographies, it begins with his birth and by the end of the page he is an adult explorer. Not much information is given about his youth. There is historical information given regarding the times in which Coronado lived; I'm not sure that the connection between the times and his exploits is adequately explained. The parent or teacher might have to assist in making the connection. His quest for gold and the fabled Seven Cities of Gold is certainly highlighted. The many discoveries he made in the process, including the Grand Canyon and Colorado River are also brought to attention of the young reader. His lasting legacy and the overall Spanish influence in the Southwest is a dominant part of the book. For further reference when doing a report it is recommended to seek out additional sources such as Majestic Journey: Coronado's Inland Empire or The Journey of Coronado (Dover Books on Travel, Adventure).This book is recommended for middle school and community libraires. ... Highly readable account of Coronado's explorations
If you enjoy reading about first-contact experiences between European (esp. Spanish) conquerors and native american indians, then you will definitely like this book. The book gives some essential biographical information about Coronado, but focuses on his journey from Mexico deep into the southwest of the present-day United States. Like other Spanish conquistadores, Coronado was searching (vainly) for gold and glory, but ended up finding neither. Especially interesting are the accounts of Coronado's dealings with native american indians. I strongly recommmend this book. This is the most up-to-date collection of documents relating to the Coronado Expedition.The translatorsand editors have gone to the earliest copies of documents available and translated them from Spanish into English.They have added documents that have not appeared in earlier collections of the event.They have transcribed the documents in Spanish as well. Of great value to many readers and scholars are the elaborate annotations, or notes, and the introductions to each document which includes comments on earlier publications, positive and negative aspects of them, andan appendix with much interesting and useful information such as the names of men (and women) they found, to the extent possible, that were on the expedition.The book will be a valuable source book for anyone, scholar or general reader, interested in ascertaining more truth about Coronado and his travels across New Spain into New Mexico and on to the land of Quivira.The volume will not allay longstanding opinions abour various aspects of the journy or the scholarly nitpicking about details of routes and places visited, but open minds will carefully study the annotations in connection with the contents of the documents and perhaps come to a clearer understanding of long debated controversial details and where they stand on them. ... Between 1539 and 1542, two thousand indigenous Mexicans, led by Spanish explorers, made an armed reconnaissance of what is now the American Southwest. The Spaniards' goal was to seize control of the people of the region and convert them to the religion, economy, and way of life of sixteenth-century Spain.
