Vassar found from the historical record many original texts from early American history. From these are taken excerpts that give the modern reader as direct an impression as possible of now largely vanished viewpoints.

Some authors are familiar, like Noah Webster. His excerpt concerns [what else!] standardisation of spelling. This is in a section devoted to education, which was a key topic in the colonies. Thomas Jefferson sounds off in another chapter on the virtues of education.
