1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous and Possibly Delusional
About me: I have some background of study in science, am not a medical doctor; but probably most importantly
recently recovered from a four year long bout of CFIDS. Before I got too sick to even read, you can believe
I went looking for some answers. I found "From Fatigued To Fantastic" to be absolutely without merit in both
its attempts at science and in any of the advised treatment regimens (I was unfortunate enough to find a local
physician here in Sacramento who was a Teitelbaum devotee and he hit me with a variety of them.)

Most, if not all of these treatments actually made me sicker, and at the time,I was already pretty miserable.
I finally started to recover a little about two years after I stopped all treatment, probably through either
luck or the grace of god (or maybe both).

If you are looking for real science, try the Whittemore-Peterson Institute in Reno. And try to remain hopeful,
but skeptical of guys like this. Some people do recover, but my overall impression is that Dr. Teitelbaum isn't
curing anyone. If he were, you'd have heard a lot more about him by now. His "research", and I use the word loosely,
seems based on convincing the subjects to self report improvement as a result of various treatments he throws
at them.

With the exception of the ethnic slur, the other one star review here by someone signed as an ex patient
is not far from what I have seen in other places reported by patients who were only made significantly poorer
by their association with Dr. Teitelbaum. Have hope, but protect yourselves. There is a great deal of
questionable medicine practiced on people with this disease.

2-0 out of 5 stars My Opinion of this book is dropping by the day...
10 months ago, I started at a Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Center using Teitelbaum's protocol. It all seemed so promising.Actual extensive blood tests that showed me with all sorts of deficiencies in my immune system.Through building up my immune system and IV shots, I thought I could beat this thing that I have had for 10 years..(I am now 37).Instead, if anything, my condition has worsened.I've been forced to take so many supplements its ridiculous, along with a lot of medications...(thought the goal was to get me off the medications?).After spending probably $5,000 over 10 months...while I think this book has some good suggestions, I don't think it is at all a cure for Fibromyalgia. It basically says try one of these forty things and hope you feel better. Some of it is good advice for general health, but as I can attest to after 10 months, there is no guarantee you aren't wasting money.I hesitate to say this yet, but it feels like I have been scammed...I don't think you can build up your immune system by taking billions of supplements, or that that is the cure for fibromyalgia.I've seen too many other people on forums who have had the same experience, unfortunately.IV shots make you temporarily feel a little better, but a few days later you are back for more and it's more money out of your pocket.I can't recommend this book because the protocol in it did not work for me, and I am close to looking elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Fatigues to Fantastic Review
This book provides remedies for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. I have tried some of them and they help. this book made so much sense to me, I gave it to my homeopath(my regular doctor has no help to offer me)and she is reviewing it to see which of the other recommendations she thinks would be most helpful. I recommend it for anyone who suffers from CFS/Fibromyalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Fibromyalgia Book Ever

Frank book with practical advice, including: how to use the Internet for information and support, seek reasonable accomodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, apply for Social Security Disability Insurance, and how to make the most of the doctor-patient relationship.Amazon.com Review
"Chronic illness doesn't come with an instruction manual," says Susan Milstrey Wells--so she wrote one. Afflicted with Sjögren's syndrome (an autoimmune disease that dries the eyes and mouth), fibromyalgia (a painful muscle disorder), and interstitial cystitis (a chronic inflammation of the bladder), she knows the ins and outs of coping with chronic illness. In A Delicate Balance, she provides a compelling mix of useful information and real-life stories (including an appendix of resource numbers for various medical and self-help organizations) to help others find the will and the way to survive and thrive.

Wells characterizes the onset of a chronic illness as the beginning of a journey toward understanding, accepting, and healing, and she organizes her book to help lead the reader on that journey. The first few chapters deal with the psychological stages of illness and the perseverance that's often needed to get an accurate diagnosis and find a suitable health care partner. Middle chapters detail the search for treatment and the effects of chronic illness on personal relationships and the ability to work. The final chapter offers the optimistic view that chronic illness is a gift--albeit one that you don't want and can't give back, but that will ultimately teach you many important life lessons. Yes, chronic illness changes your life, she writes, but such change is not necessarily bad--and having a guide like this can help you through it. --Nancy Monson ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Delicate Balance
I was not terrible impressed with the book. I found it a difficult book to get into and didn't find a lot of information helpful.
I did find some suggestions helpful, but not as much as I expected.

I picked the book and put it down several times, thinking I would find something I missed in the first reading. I was disappointed to find I didn't learn anything new.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of this kind.
If you have a chronic medical problem, and you want to prove you can go on working, get this book; if you need to get a disability retirement and you want to prove that you are entitled to it, get this book. If you just want to know that somebody understands, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Chronic Illness Books on the Market
This is an incredibly well written book with a balance between narrative insights and valuable technical information. The author is quite candid in her personal experience with chronic illness and the resources at the endof the book are excellent and not the usual "run of the mill".Ilove her quote about the importance of first person narratives. "Forthose of us who are ill, chronic illness sets us apart. But when we readabout the experiences of others, we realize we are not alone and thathealing is available to all of us, regardless of our disease."

While Wells includes the usual information about good doctor/patientrelationships and the importance of spirituality and alternative methods ofhealing, her real strength lies in her incredible ability to get theemotional heart of the various aspects of being chronically ill.I foundher chapter "From Denial to Acceptance and Back Again" to beamazing in its clear articulation of the emotional stages of chronicillness and the profound isolation that can result from that experience. Everyone with a chronic illness should read and keep this book in theirpersonal health library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good with lots of information
This book has been a nice review of the different aspects involved in the inflammation process. Dr. Challem has done a nice job of reviewing different supplements, herbs, etc. that are good for reduction of inflammation as well as including a few recipes to help get you started on the diet. I would argue that although he does mix up IBS and IBD, it is still a great book with a lot of good information for the general public. I have had extensive training in nutrition, and found a great deal of the information and advice in the book to be very good and spot on with what I have already learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book based on solid science
This is an excellent book based on solid, well-researched information. Challem explains complex ideas in an easy to understand way: about how inflammation is the underlying cause of so many diseases. Better yet, he explains how dietary changes and a few select supplements can serve as anti-inflammatories - without the risk of medications. It was great to have some recipes available in the book to get started on a new, better way of eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book in getting at the source of diseases
As a Radio Talk Show Host, I have interviewed Jack Challem over many years. He has been spot on in following the inflammation process and what it does to the body. His latest updated book, The Inflammation Syndrome is a great guide. So many of my listeners are confused as to what to eat and what vitamins to take. Is it a high protein, low carb diet, high fiber or do you trust the governments food pyramid? What is a healthy diet today? Do you believe what the clerk at the health food store claims?

Challem carefully combs studies from all over the world. He is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to nutrition, vitamins and minerals. Some may disagree with his advise he gave out on irritable bowel syndrome. Please don't dismiss the book just because of a small disagreement. Overall, his book is extremely helpful in designing a dietary plan that addresses individual needs and health issues. I find the supplement recommendations very helpful from an expert who receives no compensation from the industry.

I endorsed his book on my show.

Cheers to good health.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inflammation Syndrome
I found Jack's book to be an interesting and easy to follow guide to managing inflammation.I'm both a supplement user and a cook, so I especially found Jack's recommendations for dietary supplements and recipes helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good advice, some bad science
It is true that inflammation is the initial cause of many ailments (and what causes the inflammation in the first place is extremely multi-factorial including diet, lifestyle, exposure to environmental toxins, etc...); however, there are some claims made in this book as truth that I have yet to see as supported by science. No doubt changing your diet to his recommendations will help your health, but other books offer good advice without the person having to wonder whether the claims are true or not. It's enough mis-information presented that it makes me want to doubt the whole book.Marion Nestle's What to Eat and Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto are two good books if you want to improve your health with food.

2-0 out of 5 stars Despite the title, doesn't really address burnout
The back cover text begins, "Fight fatigue--the natural healling way!" That is a far more accurate description of the contents than the title is. The entire book is devoted to causes and types of fatigue, and natural ways to combat fatigue. It is almost useless for dealing with burnout. It might be useful for someone whose problem is fatigue. Or then again, it might not: Taking the self-test informed me that my problem was an "immune deficiency," probably related to "intestinal fungus" (systemic candida infection), and that I should treat it by taking "certain combnations of bacteria cultures" (it didn't bother to say which ones, but I'm assuming acidophilus and bifidus), having "colon hydrotherapy," and "taking an alternating warm-and-cold shower on a daily basis." Yeah, I'll keep all that in mind while I read a better book on burnout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best patient-oriented book I've seen on the subject
A new book on fatiguing illness is off the presses, with surprisingly *little* fanfare.

I *highly* recommend this book to anyone interested in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS,) its diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and all other diseases that have fatigue as a major symptom.

Dr. Natelson is a professor of neurosciences at University of Medicine and Dentistry, NewJersey Medical School and director of the New Jersey Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Center.Heis also a principle investigator of one of two federally funded CFS Cooperative ResearchCenters, along with being the medical director of the Gulf War Research Center of theVeterans Administration Medical Center in East Orange, New Jersey.

Aside from his excellent medical credentials, Dr. Natelson's presentation of what is known and not known about fatiguing illness in general and CFS in particular comes across loud and clear as ONE WHO KNOWS.This man *understands*He CARES.

In the early chapters, he does an excellent job of examining all the definitions, variousterminology, and strengths and weaknesses of various research approaches.

Dr. Natelson looks at fatigue, weariness, neurasthenia, functional illness, and other fatiguing illnesses or reasons for fatigue that must be ruled out before the diagnosis of CFS is conferred. He does this in a non-jargonistic, careful, patient and easy-to-read manner. The chapters and topics are logically arranged and flow easily, and most importantly, he is not judgmental about any of the causes of fatigue.

He addresses those who have been exhausted all their lives, saying that this represents oneextreme, just as the over-energetic represent another.

Dr. Natelson does an excellent job in discussing the medical causes of fatigue. He looks at chronic infection in general, then specifically as in AIDS, Lyme disease (fully recognizing thedifficulties with lab tests and proper diagnosis in this disease), and tuberculosis. He looks atsleep disorders, again progressing from gen! eral to sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome.

He has quite a good outline on MS can be diagnosed, and the similar but distinctly different diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.

For MS, he says:"How does a physician make the diagnosis of MS in a patient who has not had repeated neurolgical problems separated from one another by periods of normalcy?"a frequent question. He goes on to state that the MRI becomes a diagnostic tool -- if the lesions are specific, in the "right" places and in the "right" pattern, then that "strongly suggests" MS.

But, he goes on to explicate the MRI abnormalities seen in CFS patients:Of 52 patients he studied, nine had the "tiny abnormalities" (commonly called UBOs) that were not specific enough to diagnose MS. Some time later he got in touch with 8; of those 8, three of them had doctors who had dropped the CFS diagnosis, but only two had a pattern of symptomsthat pointed to MS.He postulates that patients with severe and chronic fatigue who havenonspecific MRI abnormalities may be in a different class, and may have a mild form of MS.

Of particular help, Dr. Natelson looks at the various terms and research, explaining"splitters" and "lumpers" and how these various categories have affected research. He eventalks about the selection of normal controls and some of the problems.

He has several very good chapters on practical things to do, including one on understandingthe doctor.I know, I know, some of us really bristle at the idea of our having to take time tounderstand somebody we are paying a hefty sum of money to help us!!But, this chaptergives insights into how we can better choose a doctor who WILL help, and also how tocommunicate more effectively with the ones who DO help.He pulls no punches with regardto how the training process, particularly in the past several years with the hugetechnological and information explosions in medical science, has been less than perfect!inproducing the old-fashioned "physician" -- the guy or gal who holds your hand and leadsyou through the complexities of being sick EVEN IF he or she cannot cure you.

Dr. Natelson looks thoroughly at chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), what it is and what it isn't, and the role of depression before or after the fact or not at all.

He encourages support groups, coaches, experimentation. He is quite aware of all thelimitations presently in the care and treatment of CFS, but does offer concrete suggestionsabout sleep, stress and anxiety reduction, exercise (moving rather than staying in bed kind), and why the various drugs work or don't work.

Dr. Natelson mentions looking into alternative treatment and medications, with some frank discussion about the benefits and pitfalls. His guiding principle seems to be six weeks -- if *whatever* it is you are taking or doing does not show obvious improvement or benefit in six weeks, then stop.He also warns about the many false promises accompanying many of the alternativetreatments and the psychological and emotional toll that takes.

In all of his treatment talk, alternative or "standard" he mentions costs and cost-benefitanalysis as one of the major determining factors.

All in all, this is a no-hype, honest look at all sides of the issues surrounding CFS, withpractical tips based on his experience in treating and supporting the most severely illpatients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, informative CFS book
I can't say I found the latest research to be very encouraging, but it helps to know where we stand.I've been ill with CFS for 2 years and a patient of Dr. Natelson for a year. The book accurately represents his approach and attitude toward his patients.I particularly like how he clearly differentiates between CFS, depression, and other fatiguing illnesses. It's very heartening (and easier to get well) when a doctor tells you that you really are sick and no, it's not all in your head. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This great book has helped turn my life around!
This book was me. It described my symptoms exactly, explaining the intricacies of the condition in an easy-to-understand, down-to-earth way. At last I knew what was going on in my body, and at last I could begin to take action, for, as well as factual information and resource data, this book is full of great suggestions. The chapter on pain and stress management has been particularly useful, and is explained in such a comforting, caring way that it had me riveted. I am now in much less pain because of this book. Not only that, I have the confidence to deal with different situations and recently even went on my first holiday abroad for ten years! Thankyou for helping me to turn my life around, Christine!

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly excellent and comprehensive read
As a sufferer of fibromyalgia syndrome who has fought it alone the holistic way (with considerable success) for over four years, I was intrigued when I spotted this book. Initially, I was somewhat put off by the title, as I did not want to have to 'live with' fibromyalgia - I wanted to get rid of it...However, I soon revised my opinion, as I found it to be a truly excellent and comprehensive read for anyone with any interest at all in this debilitating, painful and miserable syndrome - especially those who are prepared to help themselves)for there is no magic answer to it. I have always maintained that any chronic disease (fibromyalgia included) represents a breakdown of health, Christine Craggs-Hinton explains just what is known about this syndrome, and then takes the reader through the various forms of treatment available - including (most importantly) a range of self-help measures to help rebuild the health - before going on to give sensitive tips on how to cope physically, mentally and emotionally with this invisible disease, in a fluent, positive and immensely readable way. 'Living with Fibromyalgia' - and fighting back too, in fact. I was particularly pleased to find a chapter on 'complementary therapies', and also one on diet - the foundation to fighting any disease, in my opinion. A really 'holistic' and informative book, which I cannot recommend too highly. Thankyou, Christine!

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive fibromyalgia self-help guide
As the author of Living with Fibromyalgia, I am testament to my self-help approach. Five years ago I was almost permanently bed-bound and in terrible pain. My husband had to do everything for me, including feeding me, washing me and brushing my hair. However, I am now able to sit at my computer for four hours a day, I can do light jobs around the house, I can take short walks, and I have much of my social life back! Unfortunately, substantial improvements are not gained via the doctor's prescription pad, they depend largely upon the individual's own efforts and choices. The book, then, carries the very latest research findings. It also considers the possible causes of the condition. The style and format not only ensure readers secure a better understanding of fibromyalgia, but also that they will learn how best to reduce the effects of the condition. Areas covered are the disorders commonly associated with fibromyalgia; medication; diet and the digestive system - including how chronic candida infections can cause many fibromyalgia symptoms; posture and exercise; complementary therapies known to be useful in treating the condition; pain management techniques, and finally a sensitive chapter addressing in detail the emotional consequences of fibromyalgia and how best to deal with them. The book has been endorsed by leading fibromyalgia experts in the UK. ... Read more

This is a good, basic introduction to COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The chapters on the disease progression and the physical changes in the breathing apparatus are well illustrated and described, as are the chapters on medications. There is a good emphasis on life-style changes necessary to improve quality of life for COPDers. The only mistake I found was a common one: the author states in the chapter on exercise that if you're not able to talk and walk at the same time, you're going too hard and fast. That's simply not true for people with COPD,with the possible exception of those in the mild or very beginning stages of the disease. My lung function is about a third that of someone my age without lung disease and I know if I can walk and talk (much) I'm not working hard enough to keep my lungs in the very best shape they can be.The outing may be socially rewarding, but I'm not getting much benefit from it as exercise and if that's all I did, I would not gain functional benefit at all.The reason to exercise in the first place is so that we can enjoy a stroll through the mall with our friends or a day at the zoo with our grandchildren.Other than that, the book is a good introduction to COPD using the "small bites" approach that is the trademark of the "Dummies" books.I would recommend it for patients, caregivers and family members.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and thorough
Sounds like the previous reviewer wanted a sugar-coated overview lacking in specifics. That is not the Dummies style or purpose. This book is for COPD patients as well as the people around them. It is truthful and thorough, offering medically accurate information about all aspects of this disease. Here you'll get details that your doctor won't have time to tell you. ... Read more
