A Tour de Force of Mayan Iconography
As anyone who owns books on the ancient Maya will probably attest, they have a habit of becoming out of date rather rapidly; yesterday's Copan is today's Xukpi and yesterday's King 18-Rabbit is today's Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good thing. Unlike the vast body of scholarship that Egyptologists can only hope to add a sentence to here or a footnote to there, Mayanists are faced with a field where every turn of the spade yields material that is likely to keep them busy for decades. That is the exciting thing about Mayan studies; every year sees yet more exciting discoveries by both "dirt" archeologists and by "armchair" or more correctly "keyboard" scholars. Every new book on the Maya is welcome and if they are as well written and lavishly illustrated as this one, they are doubly welcome.

Hundreds of brilliant color plates and expert essays.
I've read much of what has been written about Mayan ceramics and can say with confidence that this is the best book on the subject ever written. The essays in it, by top professionals, discuss the forms and functions of theceramics, the meaning of their calligraphy, their basic themes and theplaces particular styles of ceramics come from. Indeed, if you read itcarefully and more than once, you too will be able to decipher theprincipal inscriptions even on pots that are not in the book. There arehundreds of full-color photographs of Mayan ceramic vases and plates inthis book. These vases are decorated with pictures of formed the greatestPre-Columbian civilization. These ceramics depict Mayan textile design,Mayan hair-dressing,Mayan head-dresses, Mayan ceramics (within theceramic paintings), Mayan concepts of design and of the other worlds belowthis one. From them we learn of Mayan myth,Mayan ritual, Mayan daily life,and Mayan art. Great Book
great for anyone with an odd collection of antique porcelain trying to deciper the makers mark. Easy to use.

Excellent reference book.
Exactly what I was expecting. A bit difficult to understand at first, but once you understand the layout it really makes it easy to use for reference.

Kovels' Dictionary of Marks -- Pottery And Porcelain : 1650 to 1850 (Kovel's Dictionary of Marks)
Overall it is helpful. I am really just getting into this, so it is great to have something I can refer to to get an idea of where the item I have comes from.

A very good resource for the collector
As with the Kovels other books, this reference is very exhaustive and complete. There are, perhaps, some mistakes, but given the volume of information here that is to be expected. I find I reach for this book first when I'm trying to identify a piece of this age group, and usually findwhat I'm looking for here. Easy to travel with, from antique shop toauction. A good buy.

Too many mistakes
Rather coplete book but-alas-full of mistakes in entries concerning German and Austrian porcelain.Take for example the Meissen porcelain:the authors put together in one large pile Meissen proper,Thiemefactory,Fr.Hirsch,Helena Wolfsohn and other factories,though these areabsolutely different things.The authors should make a bit of researchbefore starting the project:What amazes me is that this is the 46th editionof the book and nobody ever corrected those mistakes. ... Super great book!
I borrowed this book from a ceramic teacher of mine just to look through.It is such an awesome book with so much information that I wanted a copy of my own.It shows you how to make some really beautiful shaped cups.It shows you that you can make some really beautiful handbuilt tableware.I wanted to get started on my own tableware immediately.

A Terrific Handbuilding Book
This is a terrific book with really detailed instructions for building one-of-a-kind pottery.I believe that the ideas generated by the author, along with her instructions will help any beginning potter to put some finesse into their pottery.What it does for someone like me, a potter with 16 years experience, is to give me a little dose of inspiration since I know most of the techniques.However, don't pick up this book and expect to become an expert handbuilding potter.

This a a great resource for the functional potter or ceramic artists. Full of images and inspiration, as well as detailed inspructions of many items. A must have.

Sparked new ideas for my own work
The technical information in this book is excellent:well presented, illustrated and explained.While I agree with the other reviewer that most of the actual projects shown are not fitting with my taste, the ideas and techniques presented have proven helpful to me.I also found myself wishing that the cover art was included in the how-to projects (which it is not).My only other criticism is that darting is not covered, but great examples of it are, so the reader never gets the explanation of how such forms are achieved.

Overall, this is one of the best technique books I've come across.I would recommend it, especially for the hobby or beginning potter.If you have a formal education in the ceramic arts you will know most of these tips already and find the suggested projects lacking in sophistication.It may however spark some new ideas for your own work. ... Very Disappointing
Looks like they took the larger Warman's (2004)(which I have and like a little) and republished much of the same info in a smaller version.I was expecting a significant addition of material.If you need Roseville books:Bassett's Introducing (2001), Bassett's Understanding (2002), Bassett's Prices (2005), Jack and Nancy Bomm - Roseville in all its Splendor (2004).Bassett's prices are close to reality.The Warman's (2004) book has some prices that are low and some that are right on.Many of Huxford's (2001) prices seem to be way too high.If you get the 3 Bassett books and the Bomm book, you have a good core set to use.

UPDATE: The New MOLLRING book, "Roseville Pottery" 11th Ed., copyright 2006, is really good for collectors. Cons: Black and White Pictures. Pros: Updated Prices, concise reference, very comprehensive. A must have book for Roseville collectors. Dave.

Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery
This is a terrific book if you are interested in the timeless pottery of the southwest area.The pictures are very good with lots of information. It is an excellent resource connecting artists and styles. I was able to find pottery that I had purchased years ago that the style is the same.I found a used book in excellent condition on Amazon at a reduced price.My only wish is that it would be a hard cover book instead of a paperback because I will wear it out looking at it.Of course it might cause you to want more pottery pieces.And thats not all bad!

Gorgeous Pictures
Others have already talked about the range of pottery that is detailed in this beautiful book.What stands out for me is the incredible quality of the pictures and the 5 stars reflect that.I'm pretty finicky when it comes to the way art is presented in picture books.The plates in this book are outstanding, both in terms of the color and the size.Some books will show multiple pictures on a single page, with images that are too small to let you to fully appreciate the pieces that are being displayed.No worries about that here.It's strictly one picture per page with beautiful photographs throughout. If you appreciate Pueblo pottery, you will be WOWed by the way it's represented here.

Another art gem
For anyone interested in Native American pottery, this volume is a must-have.

We are lucky enough to have met Florence Chavarria Browning of the Santa Clara pueblo, and to have purchased one of her spectacular black pots.

These particular pots are not glazed, but fired specially to create the pure, colt black of onyx, darker than coal, and softly glowing. Very few artists have skill enough to burn these amazing pots, and this book, introduces readers to the best of them.

A Great Present for the Roseville Collector
I bought this book to give to my husband for Christmas. This will be the book he takes with him when we hit the antique and flea markets. There are no pictues, so you have to know what you are looking for, but it gives the buyer a general idea of how these collectibles are priced. The one failing this book has is the same failing almost all price guides have: The prices are usually for high end antique shops. Therefore, the prices in this book are usually higher than the ones we see here in our part of the country.

Almost good enough
This book is a great research tool but we would have appreciated more photos and a more comprehensive selection of values by piece.

A book well worth buying and reading.
I have read this book a number of times and find out something new each time.I find the book well thought out, well photographed, and very informative.I am especially confused about the review from July 2002 that claimed the book had no photos?My book has photos on every page.

PEDESTRIAN PRICE GUIDE
I found this guide to be of little use.All of the information contained could be easily gleaned from internet auction sites with little or no effort and no expense.Other guides make an effort to include obscure pricing with much more complete reference.Avoid this one as it is of little help.Find other guides by authors who put a little more effort into their work.

One of the best books on glazes
You will create more test tiles than you know what to do with.I love this book and Ron Roy's book too.So good.... so much to try.... so little time....

Superlative Scholarly volume.......FIRST RATE
Robin Hopper strikes again.Three cheers for a wonderful text crammed full of information; clearly and concisely presented.
I also recommend his DVD "THROWING ON THE WHEEL".

A Great Reference Book for Collectors of all Types of Porcelain
This amazing fourth edition is truly the Bible of the ceramics field. A fantastic resource for dealers and collectors alike. Al and Susan Bagdades' outdid themselves when they put this wonderful guide together. It is perfect for novice collectors or established dealers. This is an expanded edition of their classic reference with 10,000 new listings, 600 black and white photos, and 16 [ages of color photos. Plus there are new sections on Cottageware, Pilkington, Royal Winton, Ruskin, and Wade. Sadly, Susan passed away in 2003, while working with Al on this book. Despite his loss, Al persevered and completed this edition as a tribute to his beloved wife.

This is a great book!A must have!!All the books by authors Susan and Al Bagdade are excellent.

Helpful reference guide
Warman's guide has been a real asset in researching porcelains. As a novice, my greatest challenge has been in identifying the origins of my pieces.The Warman's guide has been invaluable in identifying pieces and approximating dates, as the book illustrates each known signature/stamp, and often includes the dates associated with the signatures. The various B&W photos of plates, figures, etc., were only minimally helpful (you can only get so much info from small B&W pictures) but the real value for me has been in Warman's listing of manufacture marks. Warman's Porcelain is a good launching point for identifying unknown porcelain. (It is an encyclopedia).If you have an older porcelain and are curious to know more about it, its manufacturer (and value) Worman's is a good start for preliminary information. My only suggestion would be to have a separate index by manufacturer marks (if you don't know the maker associated w/your porcelain's signature, expect to spend some time scanning through this volume to find the particular illustration!)

This is an excellent reference book!It is in black and white with some pictures and a decent price list.The best thing about this book is the broad range of porcelain manufacturers listed and the histories, otherreferences and collecting hints.Items are listed with good descriptionsand price list.It also contains marks.It lists individual manufacturersand also gives histories on manufactureing areas.Altogether a very goodbook and valuable to porcelain collectors! ... This book expanded my perception of Vietnamese Ceramics
I found this book both enjoyable and disconcerting. As a modest collector of Vietnamese blue and white, mostly acquired recently in Indonesia and the Philippines, I found a great deal of information and alarge number of illustrations which helped me with dating and provenance. There are some terrific illustrations of early pieces which I can onlydream of finding. Many of the illustrations of later blue and white,(equally unobtainable and unseen in the shops of Kuta or Manila), were newto me and show a convergence to more conventional Chinese forms of design. (I personally find the earlier Vietnamese pieces so full of vigour andsimplicity missing in most Ming pieces).

To make things worse, the bookopened a whole new realm of marvelous earlier (mostly) monochrome pieceswhich has sent me out on a new search.

You may gather that I enjoyed ittremendously, I know of no other book which covers the subject in suchdetail. My wife will hate it because my collecting will take on a morevigorous life as a result of reading it! ... Read more

Excellent book on many California Potteries.There are many more Pottery companies to be written about but for vintage pottery, this is the best I have seen.

This book provides a nice overview of California pottery.Very good examples of the individual styles of the pottery makers of the 1930 - 1960. One major flaw - no Vernon wear is listed. I would also highly recommend the book, California Pottery second edition, by this same author, for an even more complete listing of CA pottery and the histories of the various pottery makers during their heyday.

Met expectations and exceeded them!
I had high hopes for this book and was not dissapointed.Clear information, great pictures and love the catagorizing by the years!Am looking forward to more books by Jack Chipman

Much Anticipated, Sadly Disappointed!
We were really looking forward to the release of this book, only to be sadly disappointed!Instead of categorizing the items pictured by the companies who produced them, they are set up by the production year, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, etc!There is an index in the back but it's rather confusing and who wants to spend time flipping back and forth!Definitely NOT a user friendly book.I suppose you have to take different areas of the country into consideration but I've found the prices are totally unrealistic.Makes me wonder if Mr. Chipman is wanting to sell his collection!On the plus side, the pictures are good.

A "find" for the ceramics enthusiast
"California Pottery Scrapbook" is a highly informative and well researched book.I loved seeing the names of Kay Finch and Gladding McBean who were well known in the Forties, andI was especially excited to see Beth Barton's works documented.Barton was one of the foremost artists in Southern California in the Forties. I own several treasured examples of her work, and I can say it is great fun to search for and find your favorite artist in the Scrapbook.The search is facilitated by the book's organizing the artist's works by decades from the 30's to the 60's and beyond.The photos and general quality of the book are first rate.It is a beautiful and valuable book, and anyone should be proud to have it on their coffee table. ... more(cow) bowl
I'm a long way from a Bauer expert (I have 4 bowls and a pitcher), so this is a good introduction. Nevertheless, the book concentrated on "art" items rather than everyday kitchen and table items which one is more likely to see in antique shops. More emphasis on bowls might answer questions I have, such as why none of my bowls have the inside rims, or the date of that style. The book is a bit old so prices may be out of date, but provide a ballpark number for the non-pro.

Prices represent the time B.M. (Before Martha Stewart)
Mr. Chipman did a fantastic job at giving collectors an extensive history and overview of Bauer Pottery; its founders, key managers and workers and customer base. The book is an invaluable reference tool, especially for anyone who does not reside in an area where Bauer isn't "common".One must remember though, that this book was published before Martha Stewart featured the pottery in one of her magazine issues, thereby giving rise to the current popularity and scarcity of ringware.Therefore the prices, though out of date, were at one time quite accurate...new collectors can always dream of finding that rare piece priced by the standards of this text...Some of us were lucky enough to be collecting when the prices were even less than those listed here. INVALUABLE
I started collecting Bauer Ringwear by accident with a totally random visit to a wonderful shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles called Buddy's Art Pottery.Whenever I visited Hollywood, I knew that Buddy would help me choose that single, special, almost-affordable piece of Ringwear and spend lots of his time sharing his knowledge, as if I were a major purchaser.Buddy has, sadly, passed away and his shop is a thing of the past.Living in New York as I do, Bauer is not a common collectible.In fact, most antique dealers do not even know the name and try to steer me to their collection of Fiestaware.

I am today a more informed buyer and that is mainly due to the writings of Jack Chipman.This Encyclopedia, specifically, has so many gorgeous photographs and such a thorough history of Bauer and its place in California pottery that I feel it is invaluable.

It is obviously impossible for any writer/collector to price correctly since there are publishing deadlines that must be met and prices, as we all know, change on a daily basis from place to place.But Chipman's price guide is a great "jumping off place."As I cruise Ebay looking for a Bauer bargain, I often think of Buddy and I always consult Chipman.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ... FANTASTIC
This book is comparable to Val Cushing's handbook. To be perfectly honest I found "the ceramic process" to be very clear and concise in its descriptions, more so than VC's book.

Ceramic Process
This is not about the book, but about Amazon. Initially, the book arrived printed upside down in the binding and
with it cut badly with the tops of the pages missing. Following an email, Amazon reversed the charges and sent a new book which arrived in good condition. I would give Amazon high marks for addressing this problem.
The book itself is excellent.

Best buy for those serious about clay
Phenomenal book. It covers the entire ceramic process from the constituents of the clay to drying, firing and glazing or decorating. The descriptions border on the scientific but are written in such a way that you can pick the book up to read for leasure.

Within its pages you will find how to mix a clay for a specific purpose, how to support huge statues and keep small tiles straight. How to fire bisquit and how to glaze (in detail and with recepies, but this is not a glaze book) or decorate. Whether you want to cast 10 thee pots or make a lifesize sculpture of an giraffe you will find hints and tips on how to do it. Everything you need to take your ceramics over the edge.

The artworks that illustrate the book and are used as examples might not be to everyones taste (they come from a school for experimental ceramics afterall) but they fit the explanations perfectly.

If you are serious about your ceramics and want to buy one book that explains the process without specialising on only one type of application (tiles, pots, sculpture) look no further!

Good guide for the collector
If you collect McCoy Pottery, this book is chock full of illustrations of the various types of pottery produced by McCoy. It is a bit short on written descriptions and other information that might be of value to the collector. For instance less than a page (the last one) is devoted to fakes.

Chapters include cookie jars, crocks, dinnerware, experiments, flower pots, jardinieres, jars, kitchenware, lamps, lay-nel-art, pet feeders, planters, signs, vases, wall pockets, and miscellaneous.
