1-0 out of 5 stars Okay, as an alternative
Although this is an OK book, I prefer using[..] to find jobs. They really can't tell you much in this book that you can't figure out from Hound, as it gives you job listings directly from employer websites (why worry about a middle man?) and delivers an amazing amount of jobs straight to you whenever you need them. I would reccommend anyone who is in need of a job (and fast!) try [..].

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful and informative
"You're Hired!" is a fantastic resource for young and old!! It gives a realistic approach to finding and getting the right job. The second book hidden inside the book, "Choosing the Right Career Path" Gives great insights into the various career choices for a younger person entering the workforce(a must have for all high school career counselors). It is also great for the more mature person that finds themselves wondering "what they are going to be when they grow up." This book is an easy and fun read, mixed with real life experiences from the author. I have bought several copies to hand out to my children and colleagues. ... Read more

Product Description
Most people agree there are few things worse than being stuck in a career you hate. It's not just the daily drudgery of work that has become tedious; it's also the hopeless feeling of life moving in the wrong direction and not knowing how to turn it around. Renowned career consultant Andrea Kay knows it's possible for people in such predicaments to make a change, and in this book she offers her time-tested, nine-step program to show you how.

The process begins with readers doing some soul-searching to define a career objective that's based on who they are, not what others think they should be. The author then offers a methodical plan for successfully making the shift, addressing every issue from research and training to networking and interviewing to ultimately landing that new job. Along the way, she provides helpful exercises and real-life examples of clients who have made the transition to a happier working life. Kay's personable writing style, vast knowledge, and years of experience make this life-changing book the next best thing to one-on-one sessions with one of the best career counselors in the country. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nope.
You have to be something I'm not to get this book.Light on useful data, heavy on personality.Overall not very useful or helpful (or entertaining, for that matter).

5-0 out of 5 stars Life...And then Passion happens!
This book gave me the extra affirmation I needed to jump out into my dream field(s) and I haven't looked back since. Through completing the exercises I was actually surprised at how well I know myself! That just goes to show that this book is more than just a starting-over guide. It's witty and a hell of a resource to people looking to switch careers or wondering if they've made the right decision by choosing their current career. I also found Meagan Holub's The Magic Touch: How to make $100,000 per year as a massage Therapist a superb resource as well. Meagan's book has the same beautiful conclusion. It teaches how to become great at what you're skilled at through stories, personal experience and application of principals. With these books in your corner there's no turning back!

5-0 out of 5 stars organized and well balanced
i've only just started this book, but so far i'm very impressed! It's extremely well written, succinct, well organized with a clear outline of what you should expect and what you'll be getting yourself into. She also seems to do a good job at balancing the "idealist with the realist", which i very much appreciate.I think this would be a helpful book to any profession (i'm a scientist).

4-0 out of 5 stars Life's a bitch and then you change careers
Exercises are easy to do relevant and productive. Worth the investment. I can get over the offensiveness of the title though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get ready to do some work!
The LIFE'S A BITCH AND THEN YOU CHANGE CAREERS book is pretty informative for people who hate their jobs and want to make a change. But be prepared to do some work.

The first eight chapters/steps in the book are writing assignments! You answer many questions about what you enjoy, what type of environment you'd like to work in and with who, what skills you've picked up along the way etc., etc. and you don't define a job title at the beginning. The questions are easy enough to answer but really take some soul-searching and introspection.

At first, I thought the exercises were amusing but after doing them every chapter it got frustrating. Many of the questions would repeat and I didn't get why the author was doing this...other than to fill pages. Well, in the end I did see why. The exercises help you understand that you are more than just a job title and that you can switch to something else if you aren't happy. Answering the questions, in a way, also answers the nagging fears and self-doubt that keep popping up in your head when you do decide to change careers.

The book is designed to help people figure out what they want to do next, as well as help those who already know what they want to do, make sure they've made the best choice. That's why you do all the damn exercises! But there's also another plus to answering all those questions; you'll then have the answers to what goes into your updated resume, what you should say in a cover letter, and what you'll say when you get an interview. So it's not a waste of time.

The ninth and final step/chapter is what's really helpful because the author, Andrea Kay, goes into what to expect such as fear, self-doubt, what to do when you encounter resistance, and how to gain experience in a field you've never worked in before. Very helpful, although the suggestions on getting an internship were odd because Kay writes that you can get internships outside of Universities etc., you just have to be willing to work for free. The problem with that is that companies are not allowed to hire anyone and make them work for "free," even if it's an internship. Interns, who don't receive pay(stipend), must be getting credit which means you have to go through a college. And I'm not saying it's not possible to work for free and no credit blah-blah-blah, but then this is how people get taken advantage of. So beware if that's the road you choose to take.

But aside from that, the book is really helpful. And I was surprised to find that I've been doing many of the things in the book already. I gave four stars because I think some people will be turned off by all the Q&As!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Couldn't wait to get this book.Have been unemployed for several months now due to lay off. This book would be great if you are going for a very high-end job.Did not find anything that you could really use being an older person looking for an hourly position.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Excellent book, very good tips and a different perspective for those who are working in the corporate world and they are not use to findinga job. World changes and we need to adapt ourselves to this new market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great internationally, too
I've spent the last seven years in Shanghai and decided this year that it was time to go back to either Germany or move on to the United States.

'Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0' was a great brush-up for my job hunting skills. There's a plethora of tools, online resources and advice. The book is concrete with a lot of out-of-the-box suggestions.

Thanks to its advice on using the internet (web 2.0) it is especially useful for anyone looking for work overseas. For traditional German companies some approaches can be too aggressive (e.g. the Guerilla CV), but that may also be exactly why they work.

I bought the Kindle version of the book and it works fine. Highly recommended reading for job-seekers in the US or anywhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're going to purchase one book on job searches, this should be it.
When I purchased Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0 I was looking for a cover letter reference guide. What I came away with was a new way to find, and apply to jobs.Along the way I have learned how to create and mold my brand for perspective employers.

I liked the way that Kevin and David juxtaposed their concepts with real world examples. The book easily walks the reader through a process, from concept to concept and chapter to chapter. Both the EXTREME resume and creating data crumbs are especially helpful.

If you're going to buy one book on job searches, this should be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars In todays job market, you need this book!
Don't comb through the want ads. Toss that old boring chronological resume. Get this book and get started in your proactive, 21st century digital job hunt! All of the advise from personal branding through negotiating your salary are right on target. Access to resume templates and cover letter tips alone are worth the price of the book alone.Get this book because there are a lot of people out of work who are reading it and they are your competition!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
I received the book just as told, new, on time and got a very reasonable price. I am very satisfied.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not completely accurate.
There are several discrepancies in this book, starting with the title. The top job is an air traffic controller, making approx. $120K a year. Here's the problem:To become an air traffic controller, a person must enroll in an FAA-approved education program and pass a pre-employment test that measures his or her ability to learn the controller's duties. Exceptions are air traffic controllers with prior experience and military veterans. The pre-employment test is currently offered only to students in the FAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Program or the Minneapolis Community & Technical College, Air Traffic Control Training Program. The test is administered by computer and takes about 8 hours to complete. To take the test, an applicant must apply under an open advertisement for air traffic control positions and be chosen to take the examination. When there are many more applicants than available positions, applicants are selected to take the test through random selection. In addition to the pre-employment test, applicants must have 3 years of full-time work experience, have completed a full 4 years of college, or a combination of both. In combining education and experience, 1 year of undergraduate study--30 semester or 45 quarter hours--is equivalent to 9 months of work experience. Certain kinds of aviation experience also may be substituted for these requirements.
That to me says I need a degree!Several other jobs listed in the book are also "mis-informing".

5-0 out of 5 stars Find the Right Job for You
For those who aren't ready to tackle four years of college, there are still some good jobs out there. In 496 pages, this gives the details on the top 300 jobs that don't require that degree. The top paying one is air traffic controller which pays on the average $102,030 a year.
This is a good resource for anyone trying to decide on a career. Another resource is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is available in the reference section of most public libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb guide for non-college degree job-seekers
Collaboratively written by Michael Farr and LaVerne L. Ludden, with additional assistance by Laurence Shatkin, 300 Best Jobs Without A Four-Year Degree is an impressive and thoroughly "user friendly" 449-page compendium of useful lists, statistics, and thorough descriptions of exciting and satisfying jobs, none of which require a college degree. The basics of the trade for everything from advertising sale agents to welding machine operators are presented in a completely reader-friendly format, along with data drawn from government information about the overall makeup of the people who are drawn to each career path. 300 Best Jobs Without A Four-Year Degree is highly recommended as a superb guide for non-college degree job-seekers and otherwise cash-poor students. ...
