4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Brief
I got this book to study for the National Board of Professional Teaching with specialty in School Counseling. It was exactly what I was looking for. I had purchased another book, but that one was too dense. This book gives a brief discussion of specific approaches to counseling students and families from African American, Asian, Hispanic, Arab and Native American backgrounds. This is one of the few books I found that addresses Arab American issues. My only complaint is that they lump Africans and African Americans in the same group. Being a first generation African immigrant, I know that many African Americans, while they still maintain some trace of African culture, their world view is distinct from Africans entering the country now. That's to be expected because they have assimilated into the larger American Society. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite calls for a more preventive and developmental mode of functioning, school counseling has tended to be driven by a reactive and sometimes crisis orientation. Like social workers and school, counseling, and clinical psychologists, school counselors typically function to alleviate deficits, often in a small percentage of the students they serve. Although this orientation has served school counselors well in many instances, it is not empowering, it does not serve all students, and it does not replace those deficits with the type of positive characteristics and abilities that schools are attempting to develop.

This is the first book to provide a comprehensive look at the theory, research, and intervention strategies that comprise a strengths-based, developmental approach to school counseling. In keeping with ASCA recommendations, the Strengths-Based School Counseling (SBSC) framework discusses academic, personal/social and career development outcomes for all students at the elementary, middle and secondary school levels. Other key features include:

integrative framework—SBSC builds upon contemporary research from a variety of areas: school counseling, developmental psychology, school psychology, education, positive psychology, resiliency, and social work.

evidence-based interventions—detailed examples of successful evidence-based interventions and environments are presented at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for each major developmental area (academic, personal/social, and career) identified in ASCA’s National Model.

readability and pedagogy—beautifully written, the text includes lists of key points, tables of student strengths, illustrative examples, and student exercises. ... Read more

Product Description

Upon opening this book for the first time and glancing at the table of contents, students are presented with chapter titles that reflect all the crucial subject matter of what it takes to be a school counselor.  Examples of national models and paradigms, all designed to make the profession manageable and understandable, are on display throughout the book.  The authors have incorporated the human side of school counseling at the core of every chapter, hoping not to block the spirit of caring for people by what at first glance might appear to be academic jargon.   This book is designed as a means for graduate students and others to lend their voices to the issues confronting school counselors and, most importantly, to chart the course for invention in school counseling.  The authors believe that the school counseling profession is enriched when the voices of aspiring professionals meet the voices of experience, with the aim of creating new ways to serve.  For future school counselors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book was not what I expected.Although there was some good information in it, much of it was geared toward 7-12 school counselors. It feels like a book of photocopied forms that was bound together.I suppose some of the forms would be a good starting point if you needed to compose a letter, but I believe most competent school couselors could do this without the assistance of this book.

Some of the information seemed a bit dated. For example, the section on satanic rituals. This is not an issue that is at all relevant to what the students/parents I work with are dealing with.

4-0 out of 5 stars a nice resource
I didn't love this text, but there is a lot of good information in it. Much like any other text, you have to pick and choose which methods work for you and your students. I thought the section on selecting groups was a good baseline, but not realistic for the group of students I work with.

B> Noted authorities in multicultural counseling contribute chapters covering important topics such as: promoting academic achievement, individual counseling, group counseling, family consultation, career development, violence prevention, training and consultation. The second edition of the classic book focuses on the practice of multicultural counseling in K-12 school settings. The book sets itself apart from other multicultural books in that it does not attempt to provide information that is racial-ethnic specific; rather, it provides general principles of multicultural practice which are illustrated by reference to one or more racial-ethnic groups. Current theory and research are clearly reviewed with direct reference to the improvement of practice. 5-0 out of 5 stars A staple among my resources
I am a school social worker (K-6) and I have loooooots of resources. This is one I come back to again and again. The BEST thing about it is that all the discussions are perfectly laid out for you.All I do is open the book and start talking. The students I use it with (usually 5th and 6th graders) are ready for this type of candid talk and they always have a good group experience when we do this.
The guidelines, suggestions and tips in the beginning are very useful.I use the "personal strengths and limitations" section and the "time and priorities" section all the time with all different types of groups.i find so much about the kids and it helps me to know what direction to take the group next time or to further address some issues I wouldn't have othewise known about.I successfully use this with 5th and 6th graders but not all lessons are right for that age.It would be an absolutely perfect resource for middle and high school social workers and counselors. The other Talk with Teens book is just as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stressful Lives of Teens
First off, I gave this book to my cousin as a birthday present. I remember the time when I was a teenager and some of the issues and concerns I dealt with , as many young people do today; some more life-altering than others;i.e. drugs and alcohol, depression, suicide and family upheavals as well asgun violence.I found the book to be very user-friendly and read the bookat our local library. The discussions suggested within the book arehelpful in leading pointed, educational sessions with teens and would begreat for counselors and teachers alike. And the fact in is for grades7-12, makes it a great resource to the mental health and self-helpcommunities. ... Read more
