Forget the miracle pills and diets and live longer!! Dr. Neal Pinckney's book makes it easy to understand why many of us are overweight and have health problems. There are no secrets here, just the truth about living well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a fantastic book written in a very informative manner. The recipes are good too. What I thought was most interesting is how the author explains how heart disease develops... the typical American diet startsbuilding plaque on the artery walls as early as the teen years! You will besurprised when you read this book and then you will understand why heartdisease is such a big problem in America. The diet in this book is the bestdiet I have come accross, not being able to easily loose weight myself. Butthis diet does it without hunger. I can't say enough about this advice. Ithas changed my life and the way I look at my health. I no longer feel likeI am a ticking time bomb that will eventually need a coronary bypassoperation ... an operation that has become very routine in America.

Product Description
My Heart vs. the Real World is a photo documentary volume that explores the lives of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) through striking black-and-white photographs and interviews with subjects and their families. Ten chapters each spotlight a single child and in an additional chapter, the author writes about his own experience of growing up and living with CHD. The images and personal accounts reveal how, compared with someone healthy, a chronically ill child develops adult attitudes in a much different way. These are stories of how CHD patients and their families cope with and overcome extraordinary obstacles and learn about themselves during the process. My Heart vs. the Real World is sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always thought-provoking, and altogether human. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Max gets it!...and portrays it beautifully.
There's fair amount out there now written by and for medical doctors &/or parents about kids with congenital heart defects, but what has been really lacking are children, teen and adult survivors of congenital heart defects telling *their own stories* in dynamic, professional & relevant ways.

As a professional photographer out of L.A., Max does an amazing job of letting his subjects be, getting to know them and telling their stories - not to mention taking fantastic pictures of them. This book takes on a new meaning though when he turns the lens on himself and gives himself, also a congenital heart defect survivor, the same treatment.

This is a view into the lives of congenital heart defect survivors that no doctor or even parent could put together - it is truly done *about* congenital heart defect survivors *by* congenital heart defect survivors.

A must read for anyone who would like to know more about what America's #1 type of birth defect does to the lives of some of it's estimated 2 million survivors - how we live our lives because of and despite our defects.

...From one survivor to another, thank you to everyone involved in this project & everyone who takes the time to read this amazing book with it's -as yet- very unique perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. A must have for CHD moms and dads.
This book has touched my life more than any other book I've ever read.

As a heart-mom to a 4 month old with CHD (TOF with Pulmonary Atresia), I have been keeping myself as informed and educated as possible on heart defects (what they are, what to expect, etc). With that said, CHD websites and medical textbooks can never capture what Max Gerber captured in this excellent written and utterly moving book (and I have researched a lot of websites!)

I could not put this book down. I was moved to tears at several intervals, and I felt as though my eyes were opened to what my child will face in the future. The author brilliantly illustrates the mind frames of children who live with CHD; their hopes and angst, and acceptance of their fate. The children portrayed in the book are so honest and selfless it is sincerely humbling. As soon as I finished reading it, I immediately began to read it again. I will also keep it on my coffee table, I want everyone I know to read this book to understand what it is like to be a heart-mom or to be a child living with CHD. I appreciated seeing the world of CHD from the patient's point of view. Truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

Kudos to the author for taking on this project and accomplishing this wonderful mission. Your book has touched my life more than I can express. Also, thank you to Amazon.com for recommending this book based on a search for another book on CHD.

I recommend this book: TWO THUMBS UP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book
I loved this book. I smiled and cried at the touching photos and stories featured in this book. The photography is incredible and you can feel the emotion in the photographs. The stories are inspirational, told both from a child's view and a parents view of the struggles these children have faced in their childhood. As the mother of a young child who also was born with heart defects, I found great hope, faith, and inspiration within the pages of this book.

The stories and photographs are so captivating I could hardly put it down until I had read the story of each child, and when I finished, I started it all over again, to look more closely at the photographs and the stories they tell all on their own...this book is a must buy, especially for anyone who's child faces a chronic illness, such as congential heart disease. I am so thankful to the author, Max s. Gerber for giving this fight a voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
As a mom of a baby with a chd (double outlet right ventricle, slightly hypopastic right ventricle, pulmonary atresia, and vsd) it is encouraging to read others life journeys with heart disease.

As a photographer myself, viewing Max's work is a real treat. Beautiful images, very strong portraits.

Thank you Max for taking on this project, this will always be on our coffee table for guests to see. And will be a gift for the waiting room at our hospital.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Can Save Your Life
This is a truly amazing book. It gives you so much information complete with facts to back it up.
I've had this book for years, but I still go back to it for information.
If you buy any book for your heart and how to keep it healthy, I would definitely pick this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent and informative read.
Thank you Doctor Wilde for compiling this informative read, for the average layman, the many things to watch for when it comes to monitoring ones own health. This is a must read for most adults.

4-0 out of 5 stars p. 367 regarding transfats are found in coconut and palm oils
I have heard this author several times on the Art Bell show. I decided to buy the book, but am wondering about this statement on p. 367:
"The advice from the professionals is to definitely try to eliminate trans fats that are found in great amounts in coconut and palm oils.Be aware of them on labels and shun products with the killer phrase, "partially hydrogenated," particularly if the words appear amonth the first few entrants listed.

I was never under the impression or had knowledge that coconut oil and palm oil were/are trans fats.

I see no place, looking thru the index, where it is shown differently.

Otherwise, there seems to be some good advice in this book.I stand corrected if I am wrong about coconut oil and/or palm oil. (We use only organic oil.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Causes
I am aware of the benefit of drugs in treatment of Heart Disease as my husband is using them after having a stent placed in his heart. They are of great benefit for him.It was, however, difficult to get past the early chapters touting drugs as the best solution for prevention even for children.Don't give up, as he has some good advice in the later chapters of the book and recommends supplements that even many Heart Doctors fail to recommend to their patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars We CAN know more than most doctors!
This book is magnificent. It is easy to understand because it is not exclusively directed towards scientists. It provides detailed descriptions about new research that most doctors are not aware about yet as they are caught up in traditional methods to treat heart disease. It empowers those concerned about their cardiovascular health as it provides clear ways to avoid important risk factors. The choice of reading it is rewarding.
I am doing heart research at Winthrop University, and since heart disease runs in my family, I am interested to find out why so many of my ancestors suddenly died from a heart attack. If they come out with a new edition of this book I won't hesitate to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart Disease is Nothing to Brag About
Having experienced heart disease first-hand in three close relatives, and seeing the crippling effects of this debilitating disease (taking lots of medicines and their side effects), I thought I knew everything about the disease, particularly the treatment side - the drugs, the surgeries, the stents. But I didn't know that much about the prevention side, and that is what this book is all about. How to prevent it.

I was curious about what the authors Paul and Patricia Bragg had to say about preventing heart disease. So I bought this easy to read book, and have learned quite a bit from it. It is packed with plenty of practical advice, including facts about heart disease and longevity. As I read the topics on stress, exercise, different studies and vitamins, I realized that this book was more than a book on cardiovascular fitness. It was a wonderful book that encompassed a healthy way of life, that anyone could utilize. This book is for everyone, not just heart patients.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, particularly the fasting for a day. This is a not a new concept for me - fasting. However, the type of fast that is described - an 8-10 glass water fast, with 3 glasses water with vinegar and honey, was intriguing. They explained that during the fast, toxins will be released from the body, and people will experience such things as headaches, diarrhea, etc. but that it will go away over time. II especially liked it when they stated that the cholesterol will drop as a result of the fasting. So I tried the fast, and I tested my cholesterol. To my amazement, my cholesterol (which is typically borderline) was around 173. I will try it once more in the future to verify the findings.

Although I agreed with most of the material in the book, there is one section that I defer on - the authors tout that distilled water is the best water to drink. I personally like reverse osmosis water because it is more effective and removes even more chemicals than does distilled water.

Finally, one interesting story I liked was when Paul Bragg taveled the world looking for centenearians, and found a man in Turkey who was 154 years old and still working as a baggage porter. He was healthy and his simple diet consisted of dates, olives, day old black bread, garlic, vegetables and tea.

This book is definately worth reading and I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-follow, heart healthy lifestyle changes
Paul and Patricia Bragg effective collaborate in Healthy Heart: Keep Your Cardiovascular System Health & Fit At Any Age to provide detailed reasons underlying cardiovascular disease. They use graphics, charts, and headlined sections to prove useful information in an easy-to-rad format specifically suited to the needs of the non-specialist general reader. Included in this highly recommended compendium of cardiovascular advice and information are easy-to-follow, heart healthy lifestyle changes, exercises, and diet information that if consistently applied will result in a dramatically improved cardiovascular performance and physical health.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Have Just One Pump

Do not be confused by the low price on this book. Health Science prints in such large quantities, they can afford to keep their prices low. Millions of copies of Bragg books are in print.

Paul Bragg started the health food movement. His Daughter, the Amazing Patricia Bragg, is accelerating their tradition of promoting the healthy lifestyle. Product Description
A work written by a practising medical doctor that looks at the phenomenon known as "the irritable heart of soldiers". This condition, characterized by chest pains, palpitations, breathlessness, fatigue, syncope and exercise intolerance, first became an issue in the American Civil War, where it incapacitated thousands of troops. Using his expertise as a doctor, an academic and a former soldier, the author analyses the changing attitudes to this syndrome in the US and British Empire, in both a historical and a medical capacity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Irritable Heart of Soldiers
There are at most a few people that could have written a book with the multiple and distinct perspectives required to cover the topics addressed in The Irritable Heart of Soldiers and the Origins of Anglo-American Cardiology: the US Civil War (1861) to World War I (1918).Imagine searching for someone with a record of clinical investigation in cardiovascular disease, particularly the symptom complex and differential diagnoses involved in irritable heart.Require also a military background to understand irritable heart and its implications in determining a given soldier's battle readiness. Finally, this author must have the skills of a medical historian to reveal how evolution in the practice and infrastructure of medicine itself over time influenced the interpretation and management of a particular constellation of symptoms and disease entities. In this book, Dr. Charles F. Wooley draws on his experience in all of these disciplines to lead the reader through a fascinating composite of political, scientific, and personal narratives.

The book begins in the United States with the Civil War perspective. The author aptly quotes T.S. Eliot in surveying the surfeit of statistical analyses generated from Civil War records: "Where is the knowledge we have lost in the information?" [Eliot, `The Rock' 1934]One might argue that this question merits consideration by the clinical researchers of any era. We are led through a lifetime of influences leading to Jacob Mendez da Costa's landmark 1862 War Department communication entitled `On irritable heart' which served as an invaluable reference for successive generations of clinicians in the U.S. and abroad faced with caring for soldiers with similar history and physical examination findings. The author also retraces the mercurial career of William A. Hammond, from assistant surgeon to US Surgeon General to ignominious court marshall and finally to lasting success as an academician with a successful clinical practice; it is no surprise that his combination of insouciance and naivety continues to produce similar trajectories in medical careers today.

Dr. Wooley then takes the reader overseas to understand the 19th and early 20th century British soldier, with a treatise on the importance of the patient history. We learn how Sir Clifford Albutt played a pivotal role in the transition from reliance on pathology to justify a disease entity to a broader understanding of disease in terms of familial, temporal, as well as spatial perspectives. His under-recognized contributions are further highlighted in later chapters, including his observation that irritable heart of soldiers consists of a "group of symptoms [that] is too uniform to be fictitious or fantastic" [Albutt 1917].

We are led through a wonderful illustration of how technology initially developed for research finds its way into the clinical realm. The author deftly establishes how imperfect data coupled with inappropriate confidence in that data can lead to years of misdirected efforts; the French school of auscultatory misclassification of valvular disease "[inhibited] critical thinking about these physical diagnostic phenomena...for the next six decades" (Wooley p.123).Technologies that we now consider routine, the electrocardiogram and chest x-ray, revolutionized the diagnostic process; as the author observes, "cardiology can be divided into two major developmental period: before Einthoven and Roentgen and after Einthoven and Roentgen."Sir James Mackenzie's concerns that technology would erode practitioners' clinical skills have echoes in recent investigations; one hopes that he would find reassurance for his apprehensions in today's cardiovascular practice that still begins and ends at the bedside despite exponentially greater use of technology.

Early 20th century forays into the brain's connection to the cardiovascular system are retraced, including Weir Mitchell's stinging critique of his neurological and psychiatric colleagues of the late 1890s.With advances such as functional and molecular neuroimaging, 21st century practitioners in these fields are just beginning to gain the mechanistic understanding required to implement appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies as Mitchell implored over 100 years ago.

No book covering any aspect of the medical history would be complete without reference to Sir William Osler. He linked what we would today call "lifestyle" changes with control of palpitations in an era that lacked fundamental knowledge of arrhythmias by advising "dietetic management with abstinence from stimulants, moderate exercise and cessation of smoking." (Wooley)Mackenzie resurfaces with the wisdom ensuing from the earliest specialty heart hospitals: "Exercise proved to be the only sound clinical test of the heart's ability to perform its work." [Mackenzie 1924]The book also offers detailed histories of World War I-era giants such as Clifford Albutt, Samuel Levine and Lewis Conner portrayed against the backdrop of unprecedented carnage from both battle and disease in a "pre-therapy war." (Wooley p. 264)

The final chapter brings together a vast array of seemingly disparate individual experiences and historical events in a construct that is surprisingly coherent to even the author: "what emerges is more of a medical continuum than the author expected when initiating the search." (Wooley p. 261)In this book, clinicians and clinical researchers at any stage of their careers will recognize elements of their own explorations in medicine, replete with discovery and confusion, tectonic shifts in practice and the individual practitioner's epiphanies that emerge only from careful analysis of individual patients. ... WITH THE SEVENTH EDITION OF BRAUNwald's Heart Disease, the editors have accomplished an impressive feat: improving on an already classic text. With 36 new chapters and full-color figures and photographs, the new edition is substantially altered in both content and appearance. Compared with the rather limited color-plate photographs in the sixth edition, the color photographs, figures, and tables in each chapter significantly enhance the new text.

Informative chapters on the foundations of cardiovascular medicine remain, including detailed discussions of history taking, physical examination, and electrocardiography, topics often overshadowed in an era of rapidly progressive medical technology.....

The seventh edition of Braunwald's Heart Disease would be a worthy addition to the medical library of any practicing cardiologist, cardiology fellow, or health care practitioner with a special interest in heart disease.

Product Description

The diagnosis and management of congenital heart defects has rapidly evolved over the last few decades.

In this third volume of the series entitled "Congenital Heart Defects: Decision Making for Surgery" Antonio Corno provides an up-to-date and comprehensive presentation of the new role that cardiac CT and MRI will play in the management of congenital heart defects. He has been ably assisted by a cardiologist, Pierluigi Festa.

The book provides a dazzling array of images derived by both techniques and covers the full range of congenital heart malformations. Both the pre-operative and post-operative usefulness of these techniques is presented: in the pre-operative period with regard to the details useful for choosing among all available surgical options; in the post-operative period for monitoring the follow-up and potential complications.

There is no doubt that these techniques will be particularly helpful for older children and adults with congenital heart disease in assessing the late impact of a congenital heart malformation and the surgical repair or palliation which may have been undertaken years previously.

Product Description

Color Atlas of Congenital Heart Surgery covers the full spectrum of congenital heart defects, first depicting the pathology in pre-repair photographs and then detailing step-by-step the operative procedure. Dr. Litwin depicts the most common procedures along with the most complex ones, providing a range of information vital to residents and fellows in training as well as clinicians in practice.

One of the key aspects of the utility and practicality of Color Atlas of Congenital Heart Surgery is the unique perspective of the operative photos. Using a special side-mounted flash, the author s photographs vividly capture the three dimensional spatial relations of congenital anomalies and surgical anatomy. Additionally, each illustration and photo is extensively labeled for clarity (indicating the patient s left, right, cephalad and caudad positions).

With over 100 new illustrations and many new procedures, the new edition of Color Atlas of Congenital Heart Surgery is both a textbook and an atlas, providing an indispensable reference for every surgeon, cardiologist, intensivist, or anesthetist who treats patients with congenital cardiac anomalies.

Product Description
This book unfolds the history of the discovery of the transmembrane channel which is responsible for the 'funny' or If current, the primary modulator of heart rate. Inhibition of this current leads to slowing of the heart rate, which is an important component of the successful management of angina pectoris. Recently, Ivabradine, a specific and selective inhibitor of the If current, has been developed as an antianginal agent which has been shown to be at least as effective as both beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers for the treatment of angina. The development, efficacy and complications of this therapy are discussed in detail in this book. Furthermore, the clinical benefits from heart rate reduction in patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure and in patients after myocardial infarction are examined. Whether a lower heart rate per sec will prolong life is not yet known, but it may offer a new and important life-saving strategy. The current data presented in this volume will be appreciated by cardiologists and general physicians interested in the modern management of angina pectoris and by electrophysiologists and physiologists who would like to understand the importance of heart rate and its regulation. ... Product Description
Cardiac transplantation is a widely accepted therapy for the treatment of end-stage congestive heart failure. Most candidates for cardiac transplantation have not been helped by conventional medical therapy and are excluded from other surgical options because of the poor condition of the heart. About 45 percent of the candidates have ischemic cardiomyopathy; however, this percentage is rising because of the increase in coronary artery disease in younger age groups. Of the candidates, 54 percent have some form of dilated cardiomyopathy, which often has an unclear origin. The remaining one percent of candidates fall into the category of other diseases, including congenital heart disease, that are not amenable to surgical correction. Candidacy determination and evaluation are key components of the process, as is post-operative follow-up care and immunosuppression management. This book presents leading research from around the world. ... Read more
