5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for any woman
I really liked The Breast Cancer Prevention and Recovery Diet. It walked me through all the basics of breast cancer, how it develops, what the risks are, what the different types are, how to recognize different symptoms, what to expect at the doctor, and what the different treatment options are. Then it explained how to minimize your risk of developing breast cancer or improving your chances of recovery through nutrition. Suzannah explained which foods to avoid and which foods to include. She suggested making gradual changes that seem really do-able. She includes easy, appealing recepies and lots of menu ideas. Everything is backed up with a lot of research, but the book is easy-to-understand and speaks on a very personal level. The Breast Cancer Prevention and Recovery Diet reminded me of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, which I really liked also. I think this is a great book for any woman interested in better health. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Healthy oils are essential
Some of the ideas in this book are great; others are terrible. The important work that has been done since the 1980s concerning the essential, healing role that omega-3 fatty acids play in the human diet is not reflected in this book.Be very, very cautious if you use this book.Be sure to read widely to make up for the major deficits of scientific, nutritional knowledge that plague this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Well-Written
Once again, Mischio Kushi has written an informative and precise book on how to maintain your health, even when facing a diagnosis of cancer.

Like so much of the macrobiotic diet, this is a healthy and great diet to begin to feel great and regain your health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book is informative, but since cancer patients have to see a nutritiionist and eat whatever their body allows them to eat, this can be difficult. But, if the the patient can eat whatever they need to, this book has lots of good advice and suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most thorough treatise on the subject
This book does an excellent job of summarizing and organizing all of the work done by Michio Kushi and others over the span of decades working with cancer patients. Though Macrobiotics is based on much Japanese culture, this book is geared to the westernized/American reader so there is very little in the way of cultural chasm to jump over.

Many of the reviews up here are rather ill-informed. Though Macro has been around for decades, most of modern medicine now accepts its precepts, including the AMA, WHO, National Institute of Cancer Research and others. Most of the major natural lifestyle books that have been published in the last 30 years acknowledge learning much from Michio--some are direct carbon copies of Michio's works!

In any case, I have used it and seen first hand my family members recover directly from changing the diet and lifestyle. The changes to body and health happen within a few weeks. My family and I looked and felt better within 6-8 weeks, and the member that had been diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live, had the cancer go into remission and lived a number of years longer--and did not die from cancer. I make no claim it will work in every case, but it is a tremendous aid in re-establishing ones good health. If I were to come down with cancer or other serious illness I would go strict Macro. It not only effects your chronic health, but your more general weight and energy levels as well. It is a bit hard to stay on for the long haul with our modern lifestyles, but you do the best you can--and you do it seriously if you are sick.

There has NEVER been any serious and backed up accusation that anything on the diet is in any way dangerous to your health, so there is zero downside to trying it.

As to the sad passing of members of Michio's family from cancer, what can one say. There appears to be a weakness in their genetic make-up that allows this. Nobody knows if they would have died at a much earlier age, and for all we know Michio was attracted to the study of health and cancer due to this family predilection. This is a common reason people get into the study of health.

I am forever grateful for the work this man has done and shared with us.

1-0 out of 5 stars take it with a pinch of salt...
Sadly, both Michio Kushi's wife and one daughter have died of cancer.Being that they were Japanese, the healthiest and longest lived people in the world, this doesn't really speak well for the diet. However, macrobiotics, when taken with common sense, have been known tohelp cancer patients, some say to the extent of "curing" them.Follow your own instincts...and keep in touch with a trusted doctor! ... This book is so helpful and worthwhile that I shared my copy with our family practice doctor who, in turn, passed it on to another of his prostate cancer patients.I just bought another copy for my husband and me.If you are dealing with this cancer, you need this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Myers' book is excellent
As a health acare professional and prostate cancer patient, I cannot recommend Dr. Myers book Beating Prostate Cancer highly enough. Dr. Myers makes the case for nutritional based therapy that combines detailed scientific knowledge buttressed with extensive research studies in clear language that is easily grasped by the lay person. The reader comes away a secure sense of confidence that Dr. Myers has thoroughly and scrupulously evaluated each therapy, accepting only those that meet the highest standards of proof. A detailed technical bibliography is part of each chapter for those who wish to review the actual studies.Dr. Myers book is a treasure for prostate cancer patients and should be on the shelf of every health professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Empowerment
Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet, 1)

"The Book Beating Prostate Cancer" by Dr. Charles Snuffy Myers" is a must read for all prostate cancer patients as well as though who wish to avoid the disease. My husband is fortunate enough to be a patient of Dr. Myers but for those who are not, this is a book of knowledge and personal empowerment. Dr. Myers is an internationally renowned oncologist and clinical researcher whose own battle with prostate cancer is a living testimony of his teachings and convictions. His writing is indicative of his bed side manner: gentle, warm, caring, uncomplicated and engaging.

An initial diagnosis of cancer or a recurrence is frightening enough for any patient and their loved ones. If the patient and their spouse or advocate are vigilant in seeking opinions and knowledge, they will confront complex testing procedures, confusing terminology, and will be prescribed only conventional treatment options. Our collective experience has been that physicians are often siloed by their discipline and their opinions are at time biased and "singular" in an approach to the disease. The radiologist, or surgeon or medical oncologist, although experts, do not provide a consolidated analysis or a multidisciplinary treatment approach. It is difficult for the patient to gain perspective and to conclude what the proper decision may be for their treatment.

Dr. Myers is a "treatment architect" and his representation of all the disciplines, in concert with disease stages and prognosis are clearly presented in an uncomplicated and concise manner. It is very similar to his in-person style and delivery. He simplifies the text for thelayman, while encouraging and empowering his patients to maintain a state of health and possible remission. Heteaches and advocates the "mediterranean diet" and makes recommendations to ingest vitamin supplements and antioxidants. He utilizes both conventional treatments in concert with alternative treatments, all which are predicated on on-going medical research. Succinctly, by choosing a healthy life style patients can keep the immune system strong and create a body chemistry that literally starves cancer cells.

This quick reading book should be kept bedside or close at hand to garner the day to day encouragement so often needed and for easy accessibily to guidance and knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet) by MD Charles "Snuffy" Myers
As an 8 year survivor I had the good fortune to be treated to one of Dr. Myers lectures at the time my initial radiation therapy failed. This lead to seeking his assistance on my case resulting in his supervising my triple blockade hormone therapy.

His new book is an excellent representation of his skill in the medical oncology field and highlights his ability to communicate in lay terms, the logic behind hormone therapy. He goes beyond "pills" and helps build a lifestyle of diet and exercise to make survival worthwhile. His advise is especially meaningful as he is also a survivor and fully appreciates what the patient is experiencing

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Valuable Reading for Living with My Prostate Cancer
Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers has once again made an enormous contribution to those of us living with prostate cancer. What I appreciate the most about this book is his very thorough descriptions of all aspects of hormone therapy. He understands and is able to communicate effectively that cancer is a systemic disease and provides speicific information about how life style and diet are just as critical as medical treatment. He carefully follows the research and studies related to prostate cancer, including the nutritional research, and digests this information for the lay reader. This book has been most helpful to me as I continue my fifteen year journey of understanding and living with my prostate cancer. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An important word on the "American Council for Science and Health"
I have not read Arnot's book. However, to those reviewers who cite the attacks made against the book by the American Council for Science and Health, you need to know the shaky credentials and corporate sponsorship of that particular organization.Go to their website: there you will find articles saying that pesticide in foods poses absolutely no health risks, and articles saying that vending machines in schools should be allowed to continue selling soda and a whole range of snack foods in the interests of a free market system. This Council appears to be nothing more than a highly-financed mouthpiece for various corporate interests. I have been highly skeptical of any of their "scientific" claims for a while now. Finding out that they do not support Arno's book actually makes me more interested in checking it out myself, so I have ordered a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for those dealing with breast cancer
Having just been diagnosed with a recurrence of non-metastatic breast cancer, I decided to seek out resources that might help me make the lifestyle changes I failed to make after my first episode, in order to prevent yet another recurrence. Since I'm in a doctoral program, I decided to take a course on alternative medicine and immediately began reading the texts, which led to this excellent resource.

Dr. Arnot's book is highly readable and very sincere. By that I mean it has heart, explained by Dr. Arnot's statement that he conducted the research for his wife who, upon her Mother's diagnosis with breast cancer, asked him what she could do to keep from getting it. The information in the book was his answer to her--information he decided to share with other women. His job as a medical reporter provides him with a language deftness and communication skills that enabled him to make technical information accessible to a lay audience. The latter is what makes the book easy and enjoyable reading rather than work.

Like many, I questioned how valid his information was--until I encountered the same information (as well as studies) in other credible sources. Dr. Anot is not just a good reporter, he's a good scientist.

I, too, have talked this book up to most of the women I know. Prior to reading it and the other resources I've encountered, despite having a decent lay knowledge of this disease, surprises abounded. Why don't they teach anything substantive about health and wellness in school when it's so crucial to leading a happy, productive, and healthy life? I expect many of you can guess the answer--it's not in the interests of the power elite, specifically the drug companies and American food industry. (Read one of the fascinating books on "McDonalidization" for insight on this mindset and it's political/economic influence.)

My only complaints about the book are that I would like to see a follow-up edition with the conclusion to many of the studies that were in progress when it was written. Many of them have concluded by the end of 2004 and I'd sure like to know the results. I'd also like to have seen the recipes that accompanied the meal plans, or even a separate volume containing recipes.

There is much that women who currently have, have had, or want to prevent this disease can do to hold it at bay and show it who's boss (especially since only 20% of cases are attributed primarily to genetic causes). Reading, no, absorbing the contents of this book, is one of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better now, than later...
First, every woman I care about, my friends, sisters, mom, etc., will be getting a copy of this book as their next gift from me! Dr. Arnot gives example after example of medical research PLUS lifestyles of women all over the world showing better health than most Americans, revealing what scientists believe attribute to it! Unless every word and Doctor,or school referenced are all liars, this book is a LIFESAVE.Scientist have come a long way. They don't just say "don't eat this, but eat that" and you'll be fine. That's too simple. They know much more than that now and we need to take advantage of that. If they say breakfast is important, always eat SOMETHING,than that's what we should do! Ifyou want a fiction book,or an easy fix, or if you want to ramble about how research in mice has little to do with humans, than keep fooling yourself. I'll take all the help a reputable doctor or scientist or medical college wants to give to prolong my life AND give me GOOD HEALTH at the same time. Many of us ae having our children late in life.My youngest was born when I was 38.I've got to live a long time to be there for her.My mother had me at 18!She's 70 now and I love having her around.I trust there is nothing in Dr. Bob's book that will hurt me -- but that will only help me. Should I still go to the doctor?OF COURSE!!!I have been getting yearly mamograms for 15 years, and only this year did I have a a small spot.I'm to get another exam in May 2002.I'm worried. They think it's nothing and say MOST OF THEM ARE BENIGN. What if i'm one of those woman not so lucky? I am not sure about Soy Isoflavones (the dosage) although Dr. Bob talks about it.Thanks, and KEEP READING!!...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not till I find out more about Lillian Thompson!
I was all set to get this book, really...Till it came to my attention that I alreasy HAVE a book that cites Lillian Thompson's research at The Univerity of Torontowith flax seeds on breast cancer in mice (or rats, whichever-- except that its NOT whichever, it's bloody mice! and they don't always get the same results in both!) and it says that she is going one step further and, in a pilot study, is giving flaxseeds to women recently diagnosed with the disease. Now there is a review right here written in December, 1998, about the hardcover edition of this book that says that Dr. Arnot failed to make clear that the results Lillian Thompson obtained were for mice. The book I bought was published in hardcover in 1998 and in paperback in 1999, and I just got it in 2000. So I though maybe since then Lillian Thompson had published something in which she had givenflaxseeds to human subjects diagnosed with breast cancer. Since the government has granted free poblic access to Medline, I looked up her reasearh on it. She hasn't done recent research on any human subjects unless you count one experiment done a few years ago in which she gave various doses of of raw flaxseeds and processed (as in cooked: in bread and muffins) flaxseeds to healthy human subjects to see if what (no I don't know what--but it was what it was supposed to be) was excreted would be excreted in a dose dependant manner and if it would be affected by processing ( raw vs. processed): it was excreted in a dose dependant manner and this was regardless of whether the flaxseeds were raw or processed in muffins and bread. But on Medline I could find no experiments of hers on human subjects with breast cancer going back as far as 1993. It's not that her experiments on mice aren't encouraging , but one wonders what happened to the human subjects that were recently diagnosed with breast cancer who were going to get the flax seeds. It may not even be that she hasn't done that and published it too--it's just that as of now, if she has, I can't find it on Medline and I can find this other stuff of hers. Idon't intend to stop using flaxseeds, but I'm also not getting this book yet. Also to be consdered, possibly, that I do not know about: another reveiewer said that some of the scientists whose work was cited in the book have disassociated themselves from it. One might want to know why. I do thinkthat diet and some cancers are related and that it is worth one's while to find out what one can and try to reduce one's risk. However, I ,too, live on a budget, I have other needs too, and i'm not ready for this book yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars I have breast cancer
I remember watching Dr. Bob on the Oprah show and I was hopeful because my diet and exercise routine (in addition to the suppliments I take) closely matched his anti-breast cancer book.I managed stress.I wasn't in ahigh-risk group.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes
Easy, fast, flavorful, and nutrition-packed recipes.Very handy, and I have used several.Especially the soup ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great food ideas
I oftentimes recommend this book to my patients that are at a loss for what they need/should be eating during treatment. It takes a lot of the guess work out of what to cook.A great gift for friends and family members who don't know what else to do when a loved one is diagnosed, buy this book and prepare a healthy meal.

Extensive cancer treatments can be devastating to the entire system, so eating healthy foods can help to combat even the worst of chemical side effects.

Well-written, easy to read, and chock full of info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for both patient and caregiver
I received this book as a gift a number of years ago when my husband was fighting cancer. Like all cancer patients he had little appetite and lots of side effects from his chemo. The recipes are great to help with the various problems encountered by cancer patients at any time during the treatment. I also found the section for caregivers to be really helpful for myself. Not only is nutrition important for the patient but the caregiver also and this book provided great food and good tips also. Now, I give this book as a gift to those I know how are dealing with cancer themselves or a loved ont.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book concerns me
This book has numerous tasty recipes that everyone in the family can enjoy. The book is also nicely organized with a chart that summarizes which recipes are particularly good for specific side efects of cancer & cancer treatment.

On the negative side, and this was a big negative for me personally, if you are trying to follow an anti-cancer diet that avoids sugar, processed flours, and other ingredients that many believe are at least questionable if not outright harmful for a cancer patient, then this is not the book for you. Many of these recipes include the use of table sugar & other processed sweeteners, processed grains, and higher amounts of animal protein than are usually recommended for cancer patients (or for anyone, for that matter). The author even recommends adding extra sugar to some recipes to make them taste better.

I understand firsthand that some, perhaps many, cancer patients' palates change during treatment. When combined with nausea or other side effects, it can be difficult to find any foods that are appealing. At times, simply getting the patient to eat *anything* in order to get some calories must take precedence over ensuring that those meals are truly healthy. If this is the situation you are facing, then this book might provide you with some tasty options. But I believe it is irresponsible for the author to provide recipes and food suggestions that at best are not truly healthy and at worst could feed a patient's cancer.

Instead I recommend "Nature's Cancer-Fighting Foods" as a source of sound nutritional advice (for anyone, not just cancer patients) and simple, health-promoting, and appealing recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!

Thanks Amy for a great resource that I have given to many people in my congregation as they battle cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have if you or someone you know just has been diagnosed with cancer
Dr. Givler has not only the knowledge of a medical doctor, she has personally gone through a diagnosis and the treatment for cancer. When I first read this book, it was as a reviewer for several magazines. I have purchased many copies now to give to people and unfortunately, know there will be more as long as we have the dreaded disease of cancer. If you are facing a diagnosis of cancer, please think about getting this book--or get one for someone you know who needs it. It is warm without sappy sentiment, practical, and like having a trusted medical friend for the journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope in the Face of Cancer
This book was educational, inspirational, and very helpful.Since the author is a cancer survivor, she offers hope and encouragement from that perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for overwhelmed and newly diagnosed
I'm writing to tell you what comfort I received from reading your book.I read it the first time within two weeks of my husband's diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy.I have reread it again recently, and take it out when I need someone to reassure me God is in control, and to have faith.I often read sections to my husband that I feel will be of the most benefit to continue his incredibly strong belief he can beat it, no matter what the statistics say.

There is so much out there to read that I feel overwhelmed by all the information. However, very few books make you feel BETTER about this very "sucky" situation.Thank you to someone who really needed it, and appreciates it.

5-0 out of 5 stars All newly-diagnosed cancer patients should get this book!
This book is a fantastic resource for all cancer patients, but especially for newly-diagnosed cancer patients.Written by an MD who has cancer, it provides common sense guidance for many aspects of treating and living with cancer.I highly recommend this book for patients who have just been diagnosed.Read this book before you do anything! It is also valuable for cancer patients who have been diagnosed with a recurrence. An easy read, it is well worth the few dollars you will spend to own it. ... Great book, lots of self-help advice for overall well-being, not just cancer. The included websites allow further research (so many I don't think I'll ever get through them all) on excellent sites. This book has greatly increased my understanding of cancer and the resources we can all use to combat this and many other diseases.A wonderful addition to any Wellness Library.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no more important book to read on this planet other than the Bible
Given 1 out of every 2 men, and 1 out of every 3 women, in the U.S. will get a cancer diagnosis in their lifetimes, this book is a must read for every one of us.If we don't have cancer, we know 10 or more people who have it or have died from it. I was stage 3 almost 6 years ago, and refused all conventional treatment other than the initial operation. Bill's first book caught my eye midway through my struggle to beat down the metastaces (so far, successfully). He offers a compendium of solutions, some of which I had become aware of through other books, and some entirely new. This second book offers even more insight on the causes of cancer, and the logic that vastly changed lefestyle, mainly diet, is the path to remission. I have corresponded with Bill numerous times and he is a very compassionate and sensible person.I believe if we wanted to reduce medical costs for cancer in this country, we should direct all cancer patients to this book and close all cancer centers. The death rate would decrease, and far fewer people would spend their remaining months after chemo and radiation in total misery.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!!!Buy this book ASAP!!!
For anyone battling Cancer, you need to become informed. As Bill points out, you need to become smarter than your Oncologist, and believe me, after reading this book, you will be.What Bill so convincingly illustrates is that Oncologists all have horse blinders on with their primary goal to "poison, cut, or burn" cancer patients by peddling money-making drugs or procedures without understanding the human body and how it works (or outright disregarding how it works), and, ignoring simpler, gentler, more economical procedures that he so convincingly reports will help the cancer patient.

There is no better way to educate yourself on the topic of cancer than this book.I started doing research on Cancer when a family member was diagnosed and was always trying to find sources I could trust. This book takes care of all that. It has all the trustworthy links, websites, books,... you could ever imagine finding. In fact if there is one bad thing about this book, it is that it presents so much useful information that you feel overwhelmed in your effort to absorb it all, seek it out, and do your own additional research as he suggests. Additionally, with the purchase of this book you can subscribe to his newsletter for FREE, which serves to update you on changes since this edition was published.

What are you waiting for, order it!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have cancer, you MUST buy and read this book!
My name is Dr. Douglas Husbands ([...]) and I've been practicing holistic health care for about 2 decades. As a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Chiropractor and Functional Medicine health practitioner, I have many patients who seek my help for multiple health problems including cancer.I always recommend that any patient who has cancer purchase, read and immediately begin to implement the recommendationsDr. Quillin makes in his book. This is THE most excellent, straightforward, easy to read self-help book with practical, scientifically-supported and valid information designed for anyone with cancer and no prior background in nutrition or health care.It should even be standard reading for many medical oncologists, which would result in many people's lives being saved!

I recently found out I have a relative with cancer who lives too far away from me to provide adequate care for. Besides referring them to a holistic health care colleague closer to where they live, I've advised them to immediately purchase, read and implement the advise outlined by Dr. Quillin in Beating Cancer With Nutrition. If you have cancer, or want to prevent it, buy this book and take the steps outlined NOW!

Lastly, I get no financial benefit from recommending this book, but I feel so strongly about this that I wholeheartedly urge anyone with cancerto benefit from the recommendations provided in the book.

Book Description
The stunning bestseller from Quebec, coming in English in May. Over 138,000 French-language copies sold!

Within this book is the perfect recipe for success: An author who is one of the world’s foremost experts in the groundbreaking area of how food chemistry can fight cancer. A highly accessible and practical text. A beautifully designed package accompanied by full-colour illustrations.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 149,000 new cases of cancer occurred in Canada in 2005. While this statistic is alarming, current research is showing convincingly that elements in particular foods may significantly reduce the risk of cancer in healthy individuals and slow its progress in those already suffering from the disease. We can help ourselves and our families through healthy eating. But the information coming through the popular media is confusing and often hard to understand. Just what should we be eating and in what combinations? Do all cancer-fighting foods work the same way? Do they all fight all kinds of cancers?

In Foods That Fight Cancer, leading biochemist Richard Béliveau teams up with Denis Gingras to describe the science of food and which properties of particular foods are the active cancer-fighting elements. They deftly explain how different foods work to protect the body against different cancers and show which foods will be most effective. By understanding the science behind these therapeutic benefits, we come to realize not only why it is so critical to add these foods to our diet, but how easily it can be done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Things you should know
I read quite widely but this easy-to-read book has a large amount of information I had not come accross before. Its focus is to give you information that helps you to understand cancer so you can take steps to place yourself at lower risk for cancer. We all know about not smoking but there is lots more you can do.It is especially credible since its written by eminent cancer researchers who head up cancer research labs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to enjoy good food and good health
A very easy to read but fascinating explanation of the biochemistry of cancer cells and how naturally occurring chemicals in certain foods can alter the chemical environment in the body to inhibit the various stages of cancer cell growth. Amazingly the action of these natural chemicals is doing what powerful man-made chemotherapy is doing, but without the collateral damage. By including some of the basic ingredients in your diet, you can signficantly help decrease the risk of cancerous cell growth in the body. The book provides some very thought provoking statistics on what are the real causes of cancer as opposed to many of the popular myths that people worry about so unnecessarily. It also makes these essential foods sound delicious and fun. No recipes but that's up to you!!! An essential read from the modern foodie!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read Book!
This is a life-altering book.Anyone interested in improving their health needs to read it!It's a little technical, but in an era of "quick fixes" and crazy fad-diets, I found it refreshing to read a book based on extensive research and empirical scientific data. Most encouraging is that the foods that have been shown to be so helpful to improving our ability to defend against cancer, are good too - berries, tomatoes, cabbage & citrus fruits to name a few.Read this book - your health and the health of our nation will improve as a result! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars REAL HOPE AND HEALTH FOR CANCER-FIGHTERS!!
Before purchasing them, a friend loaned me "A Cancer Battle Plan" and the follow-up "Sourcebook" and my health has been forever altered! I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer in the summer and after thoroughly investigating what oncology had to offer (further assault on my immune system and an almost certain expectation of MORE cancer in the future, I opted for the NATURAL AND VERY SUCCESSFUL treatment plan of detoxifying my system and altering my lifestyle to prevent further damage. I AM CANCER FREE without chemo or radiation --- and I'm healthy and more vital than ever!
I have been working directly with Health Quarters Ministries in Colorado Springs as well as local nutritionists and my health-promoting-chiropractor. I am more certain than ever: this is the way to go!! You're guaranteed better health!!

I now understand WHY organic foods are essential (pesticides on our fruits and vegetables react in the body like hormones, and breast cancer [as well as prostate and some others] is a hormone-receptor cancer. I UNDERSTAND the dangers we have allowed into our lives and I'm WILLING to exchange health for convenience --- our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made to fight [all] diseases if we give it the right tools (nutrition) to be healthy!

BEFORE YOU CONSIDER TRADITIONAL [failing] MEDICINE --- GIVE THIS PROGRAM A "COLLEGE TRY" --- YOU WON'T EVER BE SORRY YOU DID!!!!

I strongly believe "ALTERNATIVE" therapies should be employed FIRST --- not after Western Medicine has failed (and it doubtless will and historically has ... )!

There is no "MONEY" in natural cures --- that's why they are not promoted on TV or by the medical field. "Follow the Money" if you want to be disillusioned and disappointed by all that so-called modern medicine has to offer. (More often leading to an awful quality of life and ultimately a terrible death ... DON'T DO IT!)

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring
I love this book! It is the best natural approach to cancer I have read. It gives the details you need to recover with diet, and she doesn't try to sell you anything, you can do it all with a juicer. There were two other books I had read that talk about the protein connection to cancer, The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health and Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation, but this one is by far the best. I would, and do recommend it to anyone I know with cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CancerBattle Plan
This is an excellent book for both cancer victims and their families. Not only does is provide hope to the hopeless, it offers advice on how to support the cancer victim and thier family. It provides some insight into alternative treatment for cancer. It is not intented to give specific protocols or treatment plans. It does however provide resources to help explore the options and offers some idea of what to expect.I recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hopeless case helped
I, too, was a hopeless case.Diagnosed with breast cancer to the liver almost two years ago.I was told I would live 6 month with no treatment and might extend my life two years with treatment but that the cancer would never go away.A friend suggested this book and it gave me hope. I looked for all the areas I could find hope and believe me anyone diagnosed with a terminal disease needs hope. I did not follow everything in the book but I was able to see that diet and the immune system was going to be an intergral part of my cure.I wouldn't say it holds all the answers, but I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a diagnosis of cancer. She simply shared what she did and how she did it. I did it a little differently, but I have had two normal liver scans. I did do conventional therapy as well as natural therapy and diet, concentrating on building up the immune system. Just remember, your doctor does not have the last word on whether you survive - he makes a diagnosis but you do not have to accept his prognosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would rate this book a "10" if I could
This book is worth its weight in gold.Anyone who has been diagnosed with any form of cancer should read this book PRIOR to accepting treatment in the medical world. With the proper cooperation between medical doctors and naturopathy, many people could be healed without enduring the hardship of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.Who wouldn't want to avoid that if they could?I have purchased so many copies of this book and handed them out because I believe in what it says, and I know it to be true. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
Having been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and had surgery, I have found this book to contain some exciting and good recipes to support healthy eating as part of the treatment of this disease. The recipes are very tasty plus nutritious. The only hang-up is that I live in a rural town where some of the foods and ingredients used in the recipes are hard to find, so I have to drive some distance to get them. That's some hassal, but the benefits are very worth while.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why I decided against this book
Background: my PSA has doubled in 6 months, but is still under 4.0.I am putting off a 2nd biopsy until I have given dietary changes a chance to kick in.

{The cover of the book has a picture of tomatoes.I believe Lycopene to be over-hyped at present, since there are no studies that show supplementation lowering PSA levels.}

Mr. Guler's comments worried me.The meat issue is really a fat issue (I wonder if the surge in Atkins adherents will lead to a surge in prostate cancer). The fat issue, as I understand it, is (a) the quantity of fat and (b) an imbalance between omega-3 & omega-6 fats.

Im told that grass-fed beef is lower in fat & has a one-to-one ratio, whereas corn-fattened beef has very little omega-3.So beef isn't entirely out of the question.

Fish can be a problem.Farmed salmon is high in fat, but because of the feed, it contains little or no omega-3.

My new diet has more fish (not farmed) than meat.Complex carbs.Vegetables such as broccoli & peppers, but not potatoes. No dessert. No dairy.Zone diet portions.Any general purpose cookbook will provide sufficient recipes.

2-0 out of 5 stars What is left out.
The book opens with information regarding foods to be avoided that feed prostate cancer along with a endorsement by a medical doctor. The book does not define what is "meat" which is a food that the book states should be avoided. It also avoids the categories of seafood and moderate alcohol use such as wine with dinner.I wrote the co-authors requesting a clarification of the above items.Since they refused to answer my inquiry, I consider the book just another vegetarian cookbook with a misleading or incomplete title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hope And A Fun Approach To Food Preparation
It makes sense that a proper diet can have an impact on the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. I have some doubt, however, about the ability of certain foods to destroy prostate cancer cells as claimed on the dust jacket. Fighting prostate cancer is a grim business and this book will help PC survivors and their loving spouses because it provides hope and a fun approach to food preparation. I am presently using the book more for its ideas and inspiration instead oftrying to precisely follow each recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 185 recipes are practical, nutritious, delicious
Buffy Sanders originally created the recipes comprising The Prostate Diet Cookbook: Cancer-Fighting Foods For A Healthy Prostate when her husband was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer and was given only 18 months to live. That was five years ago. Buffy's diet led to a spectacular turn-around and today her husband leads a normal, active, cancer-free life. The 185 recipes are practical, nutritious, delicious, and kitchen cook friendly. The Prostate Diet Cookbook is very strongly recommended for anyone with a family member or friend who is endangered by or is at risk for cancer of the prostate. ... Read more

Book Description
Prostate cancer is now the most common nonskin cancer among men in the United States. In 2005 alone, 250,000 new cases were diagnosed, and that number is certain to rise with each passing year. No one is more aware of this than David Ricketts, experienced cookbook author and recent prostate cancer survivor.

Shortly after surgery and radiation treatments, Ricketts began to research food and lifestyle changes that might inhibit the likelihood of prostate cancer as well as its progression. The result is this uniquely specific cookbook, which takes full advantage of foods thought to fight prostate cancer while eliminating those believed to contribute to the disease. Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer Cookbook features more than 200 delicious recipes for everything from snacks, sandwiches, and drinks to main-course dishes-all foods that will appeal to the entire family. The word "cancer" is possibly one of the most fearful one can hear.Along with good medical treatment, it is so useful to do something yourself to help.Good, tasty, nutritious meals are a very good start. This gem of a cookbook is a must.I heartily recommend it.The recipes are not complicated. Book Description
Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo has forever changed the strategy for eating right to lose weight and achieving maximum health. Because he discovered what many already instinctively knew-that a plan that works for one person may make another ill-there will never be a one-size-fits-all diet again. And since we now know that each blood type is affected differently by common diseases and conditions, there will never be a one-size-fits-all plan of action.

With more than 2 million copies of his books in print, G. P. Putnam's Sons announces the launch of Dr. D'Adamo's Eat Right 4 (for) Your Type Library. Over the next two years, eight books will be published on eight different conditions, the first two being cancer and diabetes. In these books, readers will find new information individualized for their blood type and illness. In addition to the food categories Beneficial, Neutral, and Avoid, Dr. D'Adamo introduces a new category-Superbeneficial-for helping your body fight disease. He also introduces self-assessment tests to determine status and measure progress. Supplement, lifestyle, and exercise protocols are tailored to each blood type and condition. There has never been a better arsenal for fighting disease, and never an easier or clearer tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Try the diet before you review it - it's as free as a trip to the library
At 22, I was diagnosed with melanoma, one of the only cancers that bood type O is prone to.And I am a blood type O, who never sun bathes or ever attempted to tan!I think that the breakdowns in this book are important if you actually want to help yourself through a disease as much as possible.By 25, I'd had 3 cancerous moles on my body removed, and I don't want anymore.

To drive my point home that this diet (I especially recommend Live Right 4 Your Type) is indeed worth considering, I have to say that I know that people can become so excited that they make themselves believe that they feel better, when it is just a placebo effect. However, your body can't fake the end result, and I know that when I follow Dr. D'Adamo's advice, I have perfect bowel movements.There.I said it.Just try it.These books are all over the library. You've got nothing to lose and perhaps a whole new life to gain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book--Must Read for Cancer Patients
I think it is extremely helpful for those who especially are unfamiliar w/naturopathic medicine and supplementation. He goes the extra mile in examining the link between blood type antigen and cancer cells. A must read for anyone going through chemo. or recent diagnosis. I wish everyone that had cancer would read this book--though he gives even more information and background in his general book "Eat Right For Your Type" from the mid 90s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leaving no stone unturned
Dr. Peter D'Adamo's book is a great resource for cancer stricken individuals who neither have time nor energy to invest into reading "Live Right for Your Type" but wish to try a natural cure because clearly they know that the "slash-burn-poison" method is a loosing vicious circle battle with cancer. I am under the impression that somereviewers may not have a sufficient level of appreciation of the American Cancer Society's statistics clearly indicating that 1 out of 2 men and 1 out of 3 women are destined to get cancer in their lifetime. For those still in need for such information who believe that the lifestyles of their ancestors from the early colonization period will serve as a protective shield in their cancer prevention strategy, please, at the minimum, refrain from eating stakes well done directly from the grill and do not strive to become an FDA statistic while the agency asks grill manufacturers to put a disclaimer on their equipment "heterocyclic amines are carcinogenic". There is enough scientific evidence linking consumption ofgrilled muscle meets (that is all meats, poultry and fish) and activating numerous heterocyclic amines which are carcinogenic.

We live in a very much polluted environment with toxic agents entering our bodies through our lungs, pores of our skin and mouth. Moreover, our own metabolism is an enormous toxic factory. One thing our ancestors did not consume was processed food. They consumed whole foods. How many of you shop at Whole Foods market? Our ancestors did not use cell phones, TV, computers, micro weave ovens, amalgam fillings, modern ventilation, synthetic fabrics, industrial chemical cleaners, pesticides and were not neighbors to nuclear power plants.

It helped me tremendously to work for a cancer company for 2 years, although in an administrative capacity but with a very curious mind nonetheless, to learn as much as possible about this deadly condition to make a solid investment into a cancer prevention strategy. Not long ago, 2 people died of cancer in my family. I can only imagine what an agony their slow passing must have been and how extremely lonely they must have felt.

For those of you who do not think that cancer prevention is important, please try to remember, in the event you ever need conventional medicine intervention, you are also exposed to our modern chemical compounds, which I consider to be "mixed blessings". In case you may not be fully ware what impacts their arrival on the market as well as the beautifully packaged "poisons" we find at our grocery markets with the list of ingredients only a post-graduate chemist can decipher, please read Fran Hawthorne's "Inside the FDA: The Business and Politics Behind the Drugs We Take and the Food We Eat". Then note a striking Monica George story. She was a nurse who bought into administering herself with Rezulin for hyperglycemia based on a good friend- conventional doctor's recommendation. She was the last Rezulin user before the drug was taken off the market. After her liver stopped, she drowned in her own toxins waiting for a liver transplant. Clearly, the FDA does need to compile enough statistics to justify taking numerous drugs off the market that the agency previously approved, but I do not intend to be one of them. I used to suffer from hyperglycemia too. Since I started following Dr. D'Adamo's life plan in 1996, the condition disappeared. I simply eat 6 small meals per day and have eliminated the "avoid" foods from my diet. I also won a 15-year battle with allergies. When I was pregnant a while back, I was forced to take Terbutaline to carry my son to the full term. During that time, I had a very good introduction to what Asthma and tremors are all about and do not wish to repeat the experience. After pregnancy, I suffered from Post Natal Depression. The conventional medical doctor whom I subsequently fired for dismissing my claims that my symptoms were pregnancy related was trying to convince me that I had Vertigo and was suggesting 3 very dangerous medications. I found www.pregnancyrecovery.com and avoided the "Brooke Shields story" with specifically tailored vitamins, essential fatty acids and calcium-magnesium combination. I tell every pregnant woman I know about the website, which is sponsored by a naturopathic physician Dr. Raffelock who is also a doctor of kinesiology.

I do value conventional medicine for periodic testing and in the event of emergencies, but as an informed patient, I always take it with a grain of salt (sea salt to be exact) and refuse to put my or my family's health into the hands of some conventional medical doctors who are busier making money and either do not have enough time or do not care for the good old fashioned patient care as Hippocrates intended it to be.

For those of you who wish to employ natural and non-invasive methods to enter and maintain the optimum health level, which is marked by a perpetual exceptional physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being not an absence of illness, I salute you, for you and I know that investing in ones optimum health will pay great dividends in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't add up
I am blood type A. My maternal Grandmother was Type A and died at the age of 89. My maternal Grandfather is blood type A and he is a healthy, still driving and gardening 98. His parents died in their early nineties(they were also blood type A). Now, as for the way they ate-pork was the number one meat item on their food list(by the way-it's the one meat not recommended for any of the blood types). My grandfather eats cabbage all the time( another avoid for type A). My Great grandfather used to dip bread in lard and eat it. They all ate maple syrup every day for breakfast, red meat and/or pork for dinner, rarely fish, some pears, and a few veggies. My Grandfather laughs uproariously when I tell him what these blood type books advise him to consume(of course I tell 'scare' him that if he doesn't change he might get cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and not live long). At 98 and in good health-he says to simply eat the way your long lived ancestors ate and stop worrying about what to prevent.
I find it interesting that D'adamo states that blood type A's are the shortest lived people, yet Japan and france have two of the highest rates of Blood type A's(more than O) worldwide-yet also possess some of the longest life expectancies. Strange, too, that their diets are so vastly different. If you are type A and this book scared you-go check some demographic websites that sort countries by blood type, then check life expectancies of different countries. You'll feel better about being type A. I think I'm going to stop now and go fix myself some bacon and eggs, and perhaps some white toast with creamy butter spread on top.
Cheers!

1-0 out of 5 stars Nonsense!!!!!
Genetics, diet (not blood-tye specific), and exercise are the answer!

The info in this book goes directly against my experience and that of my family.

My Grandmother was type A and she passed away this year at 94 from pnuemonia, not cancer. I suspect boredom is the real culprit, she had lost her eyesight and hearing in the last year. She told me she was tired and ready to complete her journey. BTW she ate meat (beef or chicken) at every meal. Steak and eggs or ham and eggs was the usual breakfast for her and my Grandfather.

My grandfather was type A, he died of a burst appendix at 78. His brother is 93 and still alive, he has 2 sisters still alive, 91 and 90. Two of the three are type A. Their mother lived to 90 also.

I have traced my Grandmother's family back to when they arrived in Rhode Island in 1635, most lived well over 80 years. Some lived into their 90's back in the 1700's and 1800's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Successful if you follow it 101 percent
There is no margin for error with this system, you must follow it to the letter, to the detail, to every precise instruction and ingredient or you will not find success.

You also need extreme mental willpower to endure it for 42 days, but the shining thought should be that it is worth it to save your life.

My mother was diagnosed with terminal Ovarian cancer and she cleansed it from her system, completely healed from following this program to the letter.

The drug companies wants you to buy their expensive drugs to deal with cancer, they are a sickness industry (with the doctors being their salesmen) that thrive on profit, not a wellness industry. I recommend this program with all my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, intelligent and interesting nutritional approach to cancer
I was diagnosed 9 years ago with advanced multiple metastatic cancers and a grim prognosis.I stumbled across this book in a health food store and was taken by the intelligence and straightforwardness of the program's design and by the apparent sincerity and enthusiasm of the late Mr. Breuss.I scrupulously followed his full 42-day vegetable juice fast twice, with about a year in between. The first time, I used the pre-made Breuss Juice from Biotta, and the second time I did all the juicing myself in a GreenPower juicer.

The first fast caused me to do a dramatic detoxification and drop about 30 lbs, but had little impact on my tumor sizes. (And, no, you should NOT do this fast strictly for weight loss. You'll surely mess up your metabolism.)The second time, when I made the juices fresh, I experienced dramatic decrease in my tumor sizes and total disappearance of metastases in my breasts. While it did not "cure" my cancer in and of itself, I think the Breuss fast did save my life and was probably the single best thing I did for my recovery. As of this year, I am, quite unbelievably, cancer-free.

That said, this is a terribly hard program to do alone.A few of the ingredients, like black radishes and Herb Robert (AKA Red Cranesbill) are hard to find, especially in organic form, and you must make sure everything is organically grown. It is also critically important to have the right type of juicer (a kind that cold-presses rather than blending with spinning blades), and to measure the ingredients accurately with a precise digital scale. You will probably need to allow at least a month to get everything together (very hard to commit to when everybody's telling you you are going to die if you don't act now.).

It was exhausting to peel, chop and juice all those damn root vegetables every single day (and, yes, it has to be done fresh at least every morning). You also can not take any medications or supplements while on the fast, -- no aspirin, no homeopathic stuff, nothing.Do not attempt this diet if you are not detail-oriented or can't follow very specific instructions to the letter.Sometimes I felt so weak from the effort, the pain, and from starving, that I just sat on the floor next to the juicer and cried.

Still, it was worth it.

I don't believe this program (or any program) can work for everyone.I wouldn't call it a cure, so much as a resetting of the stage, a way of giving your body a period of time to focus its energies solely on eradicating the cancer.I think, too, that it made a big difference that I'd already been following a strictly super-clean, vegan, macrobiotic diet for over a year when I tried it.

All in all, if you are interested in taking a nutritional approach to your cancer, I think the Breuss "Cancer Cure" is one of your very best bets.It is a far more gentle and elegant program than the well-known (and even more hard to do) Gerson system. And perhaps the greatest lesson in Breuss' approach is that sometimes gentleness, clarity and slowing down is better than the all-out hurried warfare approach we are encouraged to take with regard to cancer (and so many other scary things).

Good luck to everyone trying to make their way through a terminal cancer diagnosis. However you choose to do it, please know it can be done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
Breuss was a man of integrity and inspiration. His theory is sound. However the theory is not as easy to put into practice as it at first appears, First, you have to want to get better. That's not straightforward and requires physical, psychic and emotional work. Then there is the prospect of no social interaction over food for six weeks. That's not something most people have ever experienced in a lifetime. Thirdly the lack of mastication needs to be addressed, to me someone needs to come up with something between Breuss (best) and Gerson (good), that would be five star +!.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Breuss Cancer Cure
Very easy for reading and understanding, furthermore I know a woman who lived 6 years instead 1 month (per doctors assumption)after using the therapy.Who ever wants to get better, not only from cancer but all kind of illnesses I recomend from the bottom of my heart. There is herbal store in Ventura, Ca under the name Ema's herbs and they can provide all necessary herbs for therapy.Try it, nothing to lose but illness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breuss 42 day fast
I enjoyed reading this book and its potential benefits.I did not have cancer (to my knowledge) but had a few other health challenges.I did the fast in the fall of 2000 with a big help from the bottled "Biotta - Breuss Vegetable Juice" and Sage Tea (I could not find the ingredients for the other tea mentioned in the book). It was tough for the first 2 days, then no problem.I had energy to burn, slept very soundly and the health challenges went away.I have not so much as had a cold or flu since then.I intend to go on this cleansing fast every fall - when there is little fresh fruit and vegetables around. ... This book is an excellent weapon in our fight against cancer. One of the alternate therapies to put in the powder keg in the battle against cancer is diet. The author of this book has been called a genius by many. Diet can be a powerful weapon against cancer because of diet's effect on our immune system.

5-0 out of 5 stars there are natural alternatives to healting cancer
I have heard Charlotte Gerson speak and have read many of the testimonies of healing in this book.I am convinced that raw foods and juicing, plus elimination of toxic foods are essential in maintaining good health andhealing from all disease. It makes so much sense that our diets arekilling us, but I have heard so many doctors say that it doesn't matterwhat we are eating.Listen to Max Gerson and what his patients have tosay!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A non-toxic cure for cancer
Max Gerson M.D. cured more than a few terminal cancer patients with food. Some people who were supposed to die 50 years ago are still alive. This is probably the most important book on medicine published during this century

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best alternative approaches to cancer
This is a book that America's "cancer industry" would like to keep under wraps. Within the pages of this technical treatise, you'll find complete how-to details that thousands of seriously ill cancer patients have used over the years to give their bodies the power to heal their cancers. Using a powerful juice therapy and natural diet of organic fruits and vegetables, the Gerson therapy has saved the lives of men and women that traditional medical establishment called "terminal." Even if you're not sick, this book belongs on the shelf of every serious health seeker ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Breast Cancer survivor's Fitness Plan (Harvard Medical School Guides)
This book is packed with information. The explanations are clear and easily understood. The exercises recommended are illustrated and instructions are explained in layman's terms. It provided information that I did not receive from my doctor regarding those all important exercises.Ex.Warm Ups after surgery.

I subscribe to the school that knowledge is power and this book provided more information to me that was helpful.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can be strong!
This is a great book for women with breast cancer who want to be strong or stay strong. It has great information on what kind of exercise we need and has specific exercises for our various surgeries. When I started chemo everyone told me that 80% of women gain weight. I was lucky to find a local fitness program for people with cancer (Living Strong Living Well) and I was able to work out during the time I took Taxol. Not only did I not gain weight but I know how to lift weights and feel so strong. This book will now help me get through Tamoxifen and work on being fit for life. Well done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BACK TO BASICS
I really enjoyed the book.It was so refreshing to get back to the source of our health - our diet.I loved the case histories, and the "morale foods".We have all gotten so technologically centered that we think that "enriched" foods and processed foods are good for us.We have forgotten that we should be eating to live, rather than living to eat.

Her concepts are really not new, they just remind us that new and improved doesn't necessarily mean better. She gave some great ideas for supporting the immune system. Her writing is informative, not tekky or arrogant - she writes for real people.

I recommend the book to anyone who wants to stay healthy or who needs to boost their immune system.Dr. Hull's book just makes good sense. ... Read more
