Product Description
This is the new 3rd edition of Angus Baxter's classic In Search of Your CanadianRoots, now brought up to date with revised listings of finding-aids, record repositories, ande-mail and web site addresses. Handled with the acumen we have come to expect of Canada'sleading genealogist, it first discusses the great migrations of Scots, Irish, English, Germans,Huguenots, Ukrainians, and Jews to Canada; describes the national archives in Ottawa, with itsholdings of censuses, parish registers, naturalization records, land and homestead records, military records, and passenger lists; summarizes the holdings of the LDS Church relating toCanada; and explores the vast nationwide record sources such as census records and churchregisters.Next it provides a province-by-province survey of genealogical sources--in effect, a step-by-stepguide to the records and record repositories in each of the ten provinces and the Yukon andNorthwest territories. This core section gives a detailed breakdown--by province andterritory--of vital records, wills, land records, censuses, church records, newspapers, and books, then lists libraries, societies, and archives and their major holdings and ongoing projects. For both beginners and experienced researchers alike, the new 3rd edition of In Search of YourCanadian Roots gives common-sense tips on where to begin your research, how to workbackward in time from the known to the unknown, how to test your facts and avoid commonmistakes, and, ultimately, how to create a family tree. Whether your family has been in Canadafor centuries or only several generations, this superb book will show you how to trace yourCanadian roots and have fun doing it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book and great service.
Anyone doing genealogical research in Canada needs to have this book on their own book shelf. It will be referred to over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must get this book if you are serious about genealogy
Mr. Baxter starts with the assumption that you know nothing about genealogy and takes you step-by-step in the genealogical process. He makes it seem very easy but also warns of pitfalls that may occur.Along withhis other books, In Search of English & Irish and In Search of GermanGenealogy, you will never need any other genealogy books. He has notwritten one for US research but he has the rest of the world covered.Hetells you where to write for information, what kind of data you can expectfrom these places and gives examples of his own Canadian research.Buythis book and you will never be disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Research
I looked at Mr. Baxter's book at the public library and being a member of theVictoria Genealogical Society I was most interested in his observations on our society.I was shocked at the incredibly inaccuratecomments that he had published.

The entry starts with the society'sname - which he correctly entered. Howeverhe then gives the reader anaddress that is several years out of date. In early 1993 theVGS changedit's address to: Victoria Genealogical Society, P.O Box 45031, MayfairPostalOutlet, Victoria, BC, V8Z 7G9. Checking in the GenealogicalResearch Directories (GRD)itwas noted that they have published thecorrect address since their 1993 edition. To coverhimself he states that"the addresses given are accurate at the time of writing" butsurelyMr. Baxter has access to the GRD.

The rest of the articlecontinues with inaccuracy after inaccuracy and it becomesclear that Mr.Baxter has not done any research into the VGS.

He states that thesociety "holds few meetings". The fact is that for most of our twenty plus years the VGS has held regular, well-attended meetings tenmonths of the year.No meetings are held in July or August. Meetingsalways feature a speaker.

He states that the VGS "does notappear to have any ongoing projects". One largeproject can be seenon the B.C. Archives website, namely the indexes to births, marriagesanddeaths. These indexes, produced mostly by VGS members, set a standard thatotherprovinces should emulate. He does mention the indexes briefly underthe B.C. Archivesstating "Please note, the indexes to Birth,Marriage, and Death registrations are locatedin the Vital Events sectionof the Web site". No more details are given to this most useful tool.

Among the other ongoing projects are the extraction of detailsfrom coroner'sreports and the indexing of stones and burial records ofRoyal Oak Cemetery. So far over67,000 burial records have been extractedat Royal Oak and all the stones have beenrecorded. This is a work inprogress and will be published in the future.

He states that theVGS "produces a Surname Index only at occasional interval".Thelast two were produced in 1997 and 1999. The 1997 version was produced onpaper andmicrofiche. The last one is an ongoing surname index and can beviewed on the VGS website. It is being updated regularly.

To tryand justify his contention that the VGS is "the least active of alltheprovincial-capital societies" he quotes an un-named and totallyun-identified person. Thisperson states that "this lack of activityis caused by the fact that only a handful of our150 members have anyBritish Columbia or Vancouver Island roots". We actually have nearly 400 members and are very active.

He omits to mention that the VGShas one of the finest genealogical libraries inCanada. He alsoomits the fact that the VGS has an active and effective queriescommittee.

He fails to mention that the society has hosted two verysuccessful daylong seminarsin the last two years. Lady Tiviot, May 1998,and Cindy Howells (of Cindy's List fame), Oct1999, were the featureguests to the sold out events.

What a pity that Mr. Baxter was toolazy to check the VGS website . Why didn't hewrite a letter to ourpresident asking for comments or find some way to give the societyachance to defend itself against such untrue statements.

Whenwriting a fact based book every effort should be made to be thorough, accurateand fair. On just this one page I have been very disappointed tofind that a man who producesmany genealogy books may be too busy to getthe facts right.

In his book I was not able to find any comments onthe Ontario Cemetery FindingAid (OCFA) or the British Columbia CemeteryFinding Aid (BCCFA). These are two of thebest research tools and arefreely available to all but he does seem to know about them. Both areproduced by two members of the VGS. He also makes only a passing comment ontheextremely important 1871 Ontario Census Index.

He seems tothink that there is a provincial genealogical society in B.C. In facttheBritish Columbia Genealogical Society is the Vancouver area genealogicalsociety andhas no status as a provincial body and does not claim such astatus.

I won't read the rest of his book or any other of his books. He has lost my trust.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for all skill levels
Gives a great general over view of many Canadian record sources sorted by province. Greater detail is needed in the western Canadian provinces. More information on accessing Latter-Day Saints Collection and other resources which are availiable for research outside of local collections is needed. As well as more information on organization of research material. Which is essential to productive research. One of the best resouses for Canadian genealogical research. Great resource for those just starting out to the expert genealogist. ... Read more

Product Description
In about 1800, fur trader Charles Ermatinger married an Obijwa woman, Mananowe. Their three sons grew up with both their mother's hunter-warrior culture and their father's European culture. As adults, they lived adventurously in Montreal and St Thomas, where they were accepted and loved by fellow citizens while publicly retaining their Ojibwa heritage.

The Ermatingers contrasts the "European" commercial and trading society in urban Montreal, where Charles was brought up, with the Ojibwa hunter/warrior values of Mananowe's society. Their sons variously risked life at war in Spain and in the Upper and Lower Canada rebellions, policed Montreal streets in an era of riots, spied on the Fenians on the US border, and made a hazardous journey to help establish the Canadian Pacific Railway's route. Brian Stewart argues that the sons' Ojibwa traditions and values shaped their adult lives: during their adventures, the sons fought for Native rights for themselves as well as for Ojibwa relatives and friends.

The Ermatingers is an exciting story that contributes to our understanding of Indian and European biculturalism and its effects on those who make up the various forms of Metis society today. It will appeal to general readers as well as scholars and students in Native studies and Canadian history. ... Read more

Product Description
Heraldy is now. Heraldy is fun. And most of all, heraldy is Canadian! A Canadian Heraldic Primer dispels, once and for all, the myth that coats of arms are boring, snobbish, mediaeval holdovers that have no relevance today.

Using cartoons, humour, and a little irreverence (in which is concealed a surprising amount of information), Kevin Greaves explains the history behind heraldry's unique conventions and language, and explores its creative possibilities. He shows heraldry as part of the fabric of Canada's past, present, and future, and illustrates how this lively art has become livelier since Canada became master of its own heraldic system in 1988. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book!
This is a great little introduction to heraldry, with a Canadian focus.Heraldists in other parts of the world will also find it a fun addition to their library- it is a very rare heraldry book which contains cartoons.

The only problem with the book is that it is just an introduction. The author could probably put in enough information (and humour) to write a book about ten times as long. ... Read more
