Product Description
In an age of myriad computer fonts and instant communication, your handwriting style is increasingly a very personal creation. In this book, Margaret Shepherd, America's premier calligrapher, shows you that calligraphy is not simply a craft you can learn, but an elegant art form that you can make your own.

Calligraphy remains perennially popular, often adorning wedding invitations, diplomas, and commercial signs.Whether it is Roman, Gothic, Celtic, Bookhand, or Italic style, calligraphy conveys class and elegance. Margaret Shepherd makes this ancient art form accessible in a completely hand-lettered technical guide that will:

*Provide context for calligraphy as an art, exploring the rich tradition of hand-lettering and mapping the evolution of the most popular styles.

*Give detailed technical advice on choosing pens, paper, and inks, setting up your workspace, mastering various pen angles, along with step-by-step illustrations to guide you as you practice.

*Explain which alphabets are appropriate for different forms of writing. For example, the Roman alphabet works well for short, unpunctuated passages, while the Italic alphabet is more suited to informal everyday communication.

*Encourage you to personalize your lettering by using variant strokes and interpreting how you would like the words to look on the page.

*Inspire you with carefully chosen illustrations and examples, which bring letters to life.

In Margaret Shepherd's own words, "Calligraphy trains not only your eye and hand, but your mind as well."Learn Calligraphy is the authoritative primer for this age-old craft, and will help develop a new appreciation for lettering as you discover your creative personality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Author, great books
I was really having a hard time picking out calligraphy how to books so i went to the book store. unfortunately they do not have a lot to choose from, at the second store i found a better selection and found Margaret Sheperd's books. Wow, great books and great way to learn, she has a funny side to her and this book is incredible, not only do you learn you have fun doing it. i also saw a few more books in her name. Unfortunately i didn't have very much time to look at them all and i cant wait to go back to see the rest. I am thinking of picking up all her books.

I think this is the best of the starter books. Very easy and a fun read too!

4-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners
Practical step by step instructions. I find the book inspiring, full of practical instructions. Easy to follow. This is a book for those who want to begin practising calligraphy by themselves. I would suggest it for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but only for begginers.
It is a good book that shows an introduction to the art of calligraphy, but I expected more of it. It teaches only the first steps, so if you are looking for something deeper I do not recomend this book, but if you are really a begginer go for it with no mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners book
I originally tried a different book before picking up this little gem, so I really appreciate the quality. The spiral binding lets the book lie flat, the instructions are clear, and the worksheets are well thought-out.At the back of the book are a couple of nice chapters on laying out a project, and the process of crating a finished work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy: A Course in Hand Lettering
Great!I bought about 7 books, and while I am happy to own them, this one could stand in for them all. There are 5 plastic guides (very sturdy, they will last indefinitely) to help make lines for your practice sheets for the various hands.Use under tracing paper, a wonderful tool, excellent time saver.Worth every penny/dime/dollar!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best one
Of the many books for beginning and intermediate calligraphers, this is simply the best.Grebenstein is obviously a talented calligrapher and a good teacher. Moreover, she has a solid scholarly knowledge of the history of writing and the rare skill to render complex historical and technical subjects briefly and clearly. The core of the book is her instruction in the five basic hands, italic, uncial, Carolingian, gothic and foundational. She presents each in a similar manner that is easy to understand and learn. The intelligent, thoughtful page arrangement and spiral binding add much to the books practical value for those who want to learn, rather than just read about, calligraphy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars easy to follow
Though written for kids, I believe that adults will also find this book helpful. It does not talk down to you, and it gives clear and easy to understand information and directions. Because I had some practice in calligraphy before I began using this book (and because I'm impatient), I do not take it as slowly as the book suggests. I also do not bother with the guide sheets, but whether you do or not depends on how perfect you want your writing to be. Part of the reason I don't use the guide sheets is because I already have a calligraphy marker, and it is not the correct size for the sheets. However, they might be helpful (I wouldn't know, I've never used them :D). I also do not think it is necessary to switch to an actual calligraphy pen; at least, not right away. The markers work just fine, and are less messy. Other than this, the book is very helpful, and, as I said before, easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb for kids and adult beginner!
Excellent calligraphy primer. Covers everything the newbie needs to know, and then some. Highly recommended for children in second grade (7 years+). Works well when done in projects with a parent. Very good intro for the adult beginner as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute!
This book has a wide variety of calligraphy styles. Just what I wanted, my son loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy for Kids
Interesting book for my 11 yr. old daughter, who expressed an interest in learning calligraphy a few months before Christmas. Very affordable product and teaches a skill that kids can use for the rest of their lives. I like knowing my daughter can appreciate and send handwritten notes these days with texting and computers at her fingertips. Buy it, your kids will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book!
I've been doing calligraphy for years and lately I've taught some classes to interested beginners at a local art center and to my 9 year-old granddaughter.I find this book to be one of the best to use as a guide. It has everything a beginner needs to know ...with clear and concise instructions. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not what I was expecting
There are 365 different typestyles in this book, but there aren't any instructions as to how to create those styles. It is basically a trace this alphabet and hope you get it right. Might be better for those who already have a background in calligraphy and are just looking to expand thier knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does not have complete uppercase and lowercase letters.
I know generally how to do calligraphy, and I've done the calligraphy for my friend's wedding invitations (and other occasions).I bought this book hoping to find new ways of making calligraphy letters.I was disappointed. The book shows different types of fonts (many of them not calligraphy fonts). When it does show a calligraphy type of font, it does not show a complete set of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, or numbers for each of these fonts. Also, the book doesn't provide enough guidance on how to make individual letters for someone that is not familiar with calligraphy.I have spent a lot of time looking for a good book to suit my purposes. If you want more detailed descriptions of how to make individual letters, I would totally recommend "The Calligrapher's Bible" by David Harris.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This superb book contains 365 complete lettering styles and 52 lettering projects. There is somthing available for every occasion and/or need! However, I believe the book may be intimidating for someone that does not posses basic calligraphic experience.I became acquainted with Ms. Shepherd's work through the book CAPITALS FOR CALLIGRAPHY.I highly recommend both books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for me.
Margaret Shepherd's various alphabets make me wonder if she perceives "calligraphy" the same way most of us do.Some of the alphabets aren't even attractive to look at.She's more artsy than traditional.I guess there is probably something to glean from this book, but it just wasn't for me.If you're a beginner, get First Steps Calligraphy by Don Marsh instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I had this book years ago and lent it to someone who did not return it and just recently got another via Amazon. I was so happy it was still in print, I missed this book.
This book is not for a beginner but don't despair the author has a beginner book that is excellent "Calligraphy Made Easy".
If you are looking for the next step up from beginner this is the book to own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book not what I was expecting
I am in a ongoing process of learning Gothic German for genealogy research of my family tree of historical documents. This book is very through for Lettering & Calligraphy for all other styles. In the title of the book is the word workbook.I thought I was sending for a book to learn all the brush strokes in depth with blank lined practice worksheets. The product was received on time and is new. It would have been helpful if a prospective buyer could page through the book to be purchased to know for sure it was the book wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars calligraphy workbook
Thank you very much for your excellent description of the item being sold and the speed of the delivery. I will watch for your items in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy Basics
I tried to take a course that would teach me the basics of Calligraphy and wasn't about to find one that fit in with my busy schedule. So, I attempted to learn on my own . . . and this book is a great place to start. With my starter Calligraphy pen set and this book, I am well on my way to learning the basics. The workbook even includes projects. For the price, it is a great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but not a workbook
I agree with other reviewers that this book is informative and will benefit those looking for a general book on the history of calligraphy and on various alphabets. If you are looking for a book that will let you practice individual letters on pre-lined sheets, however, this is not that type of book.I've given the book three stars so that folks may read this and consider what they really want from a calligraphy book.Personally, I would like to get better at calligraphy, but calligraphy books tend to insist that you buy a panoply of supplies, set up an ergonomically correct workspace with an adjustable drawing board, and line several sheets of paper--using a T-square and other such materials--before you practice a single letter. With limited free time, I would like to be able to sit and practice calligraphy casually for relaxation. This book is not the type of workbook I sought to facilitate that goal.To be fair, this book does emphasize that it takes time and dedication to perfect a craft; since I bought online, however, I did not know the book's approach until it arrived! If you are looking for a hobby rather than a craft, you already own a calligraphy set with basic instructions, and you are looking for a workbook of the type used to learn cursive in elementary school, you may want to just buy a practice paper pad. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars To Master Roundhand (Copperplate) You must Study and Practice!
One must not only practice but study Roundhand (Copperplate) and that is by studying the forms by training your eyes on the best exemplars you can find before you pick up pen and ink!Practicing is only one part of Mastering Roundhand (Copperplate) and the other part is Studying. To the students of Roundhand (Copperplate) here is a quote from Ames's book "Study gives Form and Practice gives grace but Study combined with Practice gives grace and perfection."To the teachers of Roundhand (Copperplate) you must try to encourage all your students to study Roundhand (Copperplate)and not just do endless practicing.Teach them to practice intelligently by studying and practicing combined. I have just started teaching Roundhand (Copperplate) and I encourage my students to study. After using this book as a reference I realized I could no longer give it 3 stars. This is a good book and the author does a great job with the step-by-step instructions. I encourage you to look at the very best which are the Old Masters Penman like E.A. Lupfer, C.P. Zaner, Louis Madarasz and W.A. Baird for example and todays Master Penman in Roundhand/Copperplate/Engrossing are Dr. Joe Vitolo and Hamid Reza Ebrahimi who have current videos and lessons (all free) at The International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) can help you master copperplate. If you want to master copperplate which is also called Roundhand (Copperplate);then I agree that The Zanerian Manual will get you there (faster) with a lot of practice and studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Copperplate must have!
I used to do Italic Calligraphy but I haven't done anything for 10 years. My son is getting married and asked me to address his wedding invitations.I thought this was a good time to learn Copperplate. This book was great. It tells you everything from what kind of nibs to use (I liked Gillott 303), which type of oblique nib holder to use, ink, holding the pen, posture, what paper to use for practicing (you do need special paper), and letter formation.I followed everything she said and practiced for two weeks to make sure I was comfortable with the letters and the letter connections. The invitations are now addressed and look very professional if I do say so myself. My daughter said it looked like I had been doing Copperplate for years, not weeks. Thanks Eleanor for such a thorough book

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good.
This book (As many others ) do not teach the true forms of the letters used in the early 19th century. There are lot of cute swirls and many other things but for a person who has study Engrosser's Script (Copperplate) and has seen the examplars done by the great masters of calligraphy, this book will teach you Mrs. Winter's personal approach to the letters (which I respect) but as a calligraphy lover and as a person trying to keep this beautiful art alive I can only suggest you try the books written by masters.... like the Zanerian Manual. Once you have mastered the script taught in the Zanerian Manual you can easily duplicate most hands, including the one on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
I am so excited to have this book!It is a beautiful book. The first section sketches a brief history of Copperplate, the second teaches how to make the letters (with both correct examples and incorrect examples and plenty of explanations). The last section provides a few guidelines and ideas for how to work out your layouts and projects to get you started. This book seems to be an excelent book on the fundamentals of copperplate. As I said before, it is a beautiful book, and I can hardly wait until I finish my pressing projects to start workin on my Copperplate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a wonderful book that goes into great detail about how to write each letter. The author knows so much about copperplate and she offers great advice and tips.Listen to her advice!Instructions are very easy to follow and I got a really great understanding of writing copperplate.Great for beginners or for those with experience who want to work on technique. ... Product Description
Rebecca Yue's unique approach to calligraphy comes from years of teaching this ancient art. Most teachers prefer to demonstrate all of the basic brushstrokes before teaching you how to form words. In Rebecca's experience, however, students soon become bored with this method and fail to progress. Whilst teaching new brushstrokes, Chinese Calligraphy Made Easy allows the reader to practise them, and brushstrokes learnt previously, by writing Chinese words. From this, the reader feels a sense of achievement and satisfaction at the end of every lesson - which, in turn, stimulates them to look forward to the next exercise. As the lessons progress, the words introduced become more complicated. When there are enough words to form phrases, projects are introduced. These include painting Chinese characters onto a bonsai pot, a t-shirt, a vase and making personalised greeting cards. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
Tell you the basic strokes of Chinese writing, HOWEVER judge the quality of author's hand writing by yourself, don't want to comment here, it is ONLY GOOD for the real beginner. I say that of course I am Chinese and consider know Chinese well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive introduction to chinese caligraphy
It is a superb book to self learn how to write chinese characters. It gives all the hints to make nice chinese writing. I strongly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and Interesting
This book was a gift for a friend studying Chinese. It can be used both by the relatively novice Chinese writer, and by someone interested in the finer points of Chinese calligraphy. It is structured so that you can use it either to work primarily on building your language skills, or by creating calligraphy projects.

There are many illustrations that show how to construct individual strokes, and how to put them together into some of the building blocks that make up the Chinese written language. The illustrations also show finished projects, with the all the details to create them.

The descriptions of how to control the brushes to achieve different effects are very clear.

The best way to enjoy this book is with brush and paper, trying out the techniques.

Good both for the the linguist and the artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are serious about Chinese Calligraphy... This is your Book...
This book provides the basics for understanding the complex workmanship and discipline required to produce quality Chinese Calligraphy.
This is an excellent book, if you are truely serious about learning this Ancient Art.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
This is a good book to start working with Chinese Calligraphy. The instructions are clear and helpful, and many examples of characters are given to practice, in such a way that you can see and work with the different variations of the basic brushstrokes. While this book won't lead to mastery, it has certainly helped me in achieving more consistency in writing the characters.

The art projects were fun to do, and I have ended up doing some of them several times as friends and family wanted one of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource
Exhaustive content, clearly presented, in a binding that lies flat.I picked this book up on a whim while visiting the Cloisters, and am continually drawn back to it.A familiarity with calligraphy and a basic understanding of design techniques is necessary to get the most out of this book.

If you want something aimed more firmly at a beginner, I recommend Paint Your Own Illuminated Letters, which has excellent step-by-step illustrations in a larger format.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Need Part B To Go With A!
These books "The Bible of Illuminated Letters" is part B of Part A: The Calligapher's Bible. These two books go hand in hand.I wish they would have been available years ago. When you take your time to create a really nice special letter for someone, the effort is a gift in itself.Take some time out for yourself and experiment with you creative writing and decoration.God be with you and you with Him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illumination enough
This is my extra-curricular "fun" book. I had to give it five points for the color, design, illustrations - not even mentioning the format and text. Even if a person could not read, he or she would still enjoy looking through this book time and time again. BTW.The text and instructions are very clear and almost impossible to understand.Margaret Morgan has done a fantastic job!

After I finished the book
I finished the text section of this wonderful book. The author does not spare anything in her descriptions of the tools needed, what ancient illuminators used and what options are available for us in the 21st century. The second have of the book contains projects; step by step instructions to reproduce illuminated letters from the major periods of Western history. This book is proving to be not only informative, but also a great way of using holy distraction when the mind is numb. The instructions seem simple, but they are actually much harder that one initially estimates. The author, however, on more than one occasion, that each letter and style needs to be practiced over and over, until the letters are consistent and we are able to write with a certain rhythm andpattern.I maintain my original rating of 5 stars. Even if one does not want to experiment with the projects, the book is beautiful in its own right and should be left in thefor people to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST books on illuminated lettering
I really love this book on the techniques of illuminated letters. If this is what you are interested in then this is the book you are looking for. Ms. Morgan tells you what and how when it comes to illuminating a letter. She is one of the best in the field along side of Carl Rohrs, a calligrapher.. letter designer and workshop leader. If this is your thing then buy the book and sign up for a workshop...you won't be disappointed with either.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that stays with my scribal equipment.
This is a great book that has examples of several styles of illuminated letters, from different time periods throughout the medieval and renaissance eras. I love the fact that it takes and has step by step pictorial instructions on how to do an example letter for each style. It also has a color detailed example for each kind of letter (ones that resemble each other like FLT and COQ, you get the idea) and a simple line drawing for the others rather than taking up space and making the book more expensive. It also has examples of the individual calligraphy letters for each style and numbers too.
One of my favorite parts of the book is at the end of each chapter it has examples of the borders and other decoration used in the illuminations. Some are so different from others, and you can take and use these little bits and extrapolate to add so much more to your documents.
This book is more for actually creating the illuminations yourself, rather than just looking at and researching period work. I keep this book with my scribal kit rather than on my shelf. If I can only bring paper, pencil, paint and a book to bring with me, I choose this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy For Dummies
The book arrived as described (NEW) and was delivered within the estimated time frame (about 10 days).

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good start with Calligraphy
Starting with no previous knowledge (and a very bad writting style), I got decent result in a few time.

You don't have to follow the order given by the book. For example, if you an get hold of a manuscript pen (it allows to use standard ink cartridges and is quite inexpensive), you may directly start with a calligraphy pen.

Italic is clean, fast but you'll probably want to jump fast to the gothic writting. although the book don't encourage it it's perfectly possible.

The last one (Copperplate) can be done before/after the other. Definitively a good book for beginners (and more advanced who want to learn Copperplate).

5-0 out of 5 stars For Dummies Only! (bg)

Clear and basic.Great referance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Bennett does it again!
"Calligraphy for Dummies" is excellent. The author, Jim Bennett, is not only a writer but also a teacher. The book makes an outstanding textbook--either for use by an individual or a group. Both the text and the illustrations are very clear and easy to understand. In my opinion, there's not another calligraphy book available that even comes close in information and clarity for a beginner in the ancient art of beautiful writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy for Dummies was definitely for me

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your run of the mill copy book...
It's much more interesting than that. Not only does it show you how to write some of the most intriguing scripts, but the historical commentary is enlightening. There isn't a boring page in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference book on calligraphy
Excellent reference book on calligraphy. This book avoids the useless fluff sometimes seen in such books.Calligraphy styles (and their history) are presented in a clear, concise and useful manner. This is a great tool for learning these styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightfully sufficient reference
My interest in calligraphy has been purely historical. While I recognize all lettering arts as beautiful, I have no interest in learning the more modern hands or techniques to come along after the 18th ct.So, it has been my delight to read and use this book. The information gathered in this book is adequate and complete, not exhaustive--so one may read as little historical background and other information as he/she likes, then move on to practical application.

My advice: do use this book as a resource for historical scripts, but do not begin with it.There is very little written on general principles of calligraphy and lettering, so expect to shop for a beginner's book on calligraphy if you are thus inexperienced. You might find yourself frustrated with the gaps in essentials and not be able to truly enjoy trying the historical hands once you try them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Calligraphy; Its history and technique
Medieval Calligraphy; Its history and technique, is a comprehensive book on the whys and wherefores of Medieval Calligraphy.
It covers the development of different scripts and letterings. It gives a bit of background on each script, how it was used and when it was used. It then gives details of each letter and some variations as well as how to form the letter.
As well as the focus on calligraphy itself this book puts scripts into context. It gives individuals the tools to use the scripts to complete a project with a medieval tone and flavour. It talks about page layouts, how to alter scripts for capitals, additions of ligatures and numbers. The book also covers materials that can be used to produce a completed piece that looks very close to medieval without going to all the bother of making the inks and other items yourself- although this too is covered.
This book is fantastic for anyone with a serious interest in calligraphy in the middle ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to get started with calligraphy
I bought this book for a calligraphy class. It was a great reference for how to form letters as I was writing. There is information about how a particular hand came into existance for each section of the book. There is a complete alphabet shown for each hand with detailed lines and numbers for each of the strokes used to create a letter or figure as well as the type of pen used. I found it very easy to follow the lines and numbers as I was writing.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning calligraphy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art of Calligraphy
The book met all of my expectations and more. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow.

The graphics are superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful graphics
My husband and I borrowed this book from a library and were so impressed with the beauty of the presentation and the quality of the text and content choices that we purchased this book through Amazon to have as a permanent reference and enjoyable browsing copy in our book collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art of Calligraphy
A marvelous resource for different calligraphy styles and hands. A must have for the calligraphy library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used in one of the calligraphy classes I took ...
I recently took a calligraphy class, and my teacher used this book to teach the class.

I immediately bought it, even though I already own a "few" calligraphy books, but this is one I reference more than any other.

I particularly appreciate the history lesson of written script, as well as all of the samples of historical works throughout the book. I don't have this info in any of my other books.

Harris utilizes multiple colors to illustrate the order of the strokes. This is very useful in tandem with numbers and arrows to show how to form each letter.

25 letterform styles plus "cadels" are taught in this book.

The GLOSSARY in this book is fantastic. Any term you come up against, you can find it in this glossary. Saves a LOT of time instead of searching each page for the definition!

There is a reference table of all the letterforms in the book, which makes it easy to decide which hand you may want to utilize at any given time.

And to top it all off, there's a comprehensive bibliography. So, if you want to research anything on your own you have a great guide!

I REALLY wish this book was spiral-bound so it would lay flat without a lot of bending and creasing, but it is NOT spiral-bound. It is a regular paperback. However, once you do your creasing and bending and folding, the pages eventually stay open and flat. I have resorted to clipping my pages open with a binder clip because the book is still new.

Mr. Harris, if you are reading this review, PLEASE PRINT THIS BOOK WITH A SPIRAL BINDING!!!! Otherwise, 2 thumbs up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential buy for left-handers
As a (right-handed) calligraphy tutor, I would disagree with a previous reviewer that this book is a waste of money. Contrary to the reviewer's comments, there is no such thing as a dedicated "left-handed script style," just as there are no dedicated right-handed script styles. That's why he couldn't find any such scripts in this book. ALL calligraphic alphabets can be learned by both right and left handers. It's just a bit more difficult for a left-hander to achieve success. I would suggest that a left-hander should go to a calligraphy class to learn the craft. Failing that, a book such as "Left-handed Calligraphy" will explain essential information such as how a left-hander should write with an oblique nib, and with their paper sloping. I own a copy of this book, and my left-handed students find it very useful. When learning calligraphy there is no substitute for formal tuition, but a book like this one can certainly help left-handers to achieve success. It just takes determination, patience and a lot of practice. I know from personal experience that this book is useful to left-handers, and is certainly not a waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars No help at all
What I wanted was a book that would have script styles suitable for a left-hander. Right-handed styles come out all wrong if they are done by a leftie as the broad and narrow strokes are all reversed. Money wasted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive!
Left handed calligraphy? Not too much instruction for lefties in here.Just basic calligraphy so far.It was so boring, I just quit reading it.I want someone to write a book giving EXACT instructions for lefties who write with a hook, and it is only mentioned one time in most calligraphy books.Guess I should train my right hand to write....

5-0 out of 5 stars Left-Handed Calligraphy
Good book, with direct info; good length with short and sweet approach. Long enough for a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Help for Left Handed Writers
I didn't buy this book to become an impressive calligrapher. I bought the book because I was seeking help in my penmanship with only a casual interest in calligraphy and, as a lefty, this book looked promising. I was not disappointed. A major strength of the book is that it doesn't patronize us lefties, and could easily be modified for right-handed writers. The author doesn't explain how to cope as a lefty, but presents the full topic as though all writers were left-handed. This focused approach makes the book invaluable to the left-handed writer who wants a meaningful book on calligraphy, and not just a supplement to a book for right-handed writers. The book also presents history of calligraphy and other supportive background information. Overall, a nice reference and the size, at 64 pages, is perfect for my needs. A person seeking professional status may need much much more, but this is a great introductory and basic text. ... Read more

Product Description
With its bold strokes and mystic aura, Zen calligraphy has fascinated Westerners for decades, yet it remains an abstract, rarely practiced form of expression outside of Asia. Now, master calligrapher Tanchu Terayama explains the techniques behind this subtle art and offers step-by-step instructions for practicing it on a professional level.

After introducing the basics, Terayama presents a unique meditative warm-up to establish the proper mental attitude needed to release one's creative energies. Next, the power of the brushed line is explained and demonstrated. What makes a good line or a bad one, an expressive effort or an unfocused one? Lessons on brushing symbolic Japanese characters follow, including those for "emptiness," "nothingness," and "flower." The painting section shows readers how to draw the spare yet elegant pictorial themes of this classic art: bamboo, plum blossoms, Mount Fuji, and the inspirational Zen priest Daruma.

If the exercises are the heart of the book, the Appreciation section is the soul. This chapter introduces classic works from renowned priests and other historical figures, including Miyamoto Musashi (the celebrated swordsman and author of The Book of Five Rings), Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of aikido), Jigoro Kano (the father of judo), and Zen priest Hakuin. Each masterpiece is accompanied by penetrating commentary on the strengths and salient features of the work.

Rarely has Zen calligraphy been demonstrated and discussed with such candor and insight. Illuminating yet another side of Zen, Zen Brushwork will be an invaluable source to those interested in meditation, Zen, Buddhism, the martial arts, and Oriental traditions in general. ... Read more

The Editor,Professor Ralph Cleminson, has enlisted the help of leading contemporary calligraphers and artists to produce an excellent book that covers the history of writing and calligraph, detailed descriptions of pens, brushes, inks, paints and papers. Also covered are the basics of calligraphy, including correcting common mistakes.
It covers all the common scripts;but where this book greatly differs is that it covers other scripts, namely,Ancient Greek,Russian Cyrillic,Hebrew,Arabic,Chinese and Japanese. This book had a lot of pretty pictures. But don't buy it if you actually want an in-depth instructional book on Chinese calligraphy. About 2/3 of the book is just about making crafts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chinese calligraphy overview
This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn about the different styles of Chinese calligraphy. It gives enough information along with a list of brushes needed for each style so that I could actually practice some simple symbols. I don't believe I will ever try the giant writing style as it requires a horses tail (the whole thing!) and all the horses I know would look very sad without their's. I'm hoping to get some poster size panels done for the New Year's celebrations. I also know where to find the resources for all the symbols relating to the style I've chosen. Thanks for the guide to Chinese calligraphy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars soup-to-nuts coverage of hebrew calligraphy
This hard-to-find book covers everything you need to become an accomplished hebrew calligrapher. No prior knowledge of calligraphy or the hebrew alphabet is assumed. Details of forming letters and layouts are clearly explained.A similiar book by Jay Seth Greenspan called 'Hebrew Calligraphy: Step By Step' is less expensive and quite good for someone who just wants to dabble. But serious hobbyists and professionals will be better served by Cara Marks book. Marks covers much more ground than Greenspan, including both square and cursive scripts in detail as well as provides the full text of the Jewish marriage contract and other information useful for professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book is exactly what the title says -- a step-by-step handbook for doing Hebrew calligraphy.Part I is an overview of the history of the Hebrew alphabet, the liturgical uses of Hebrew calligraphy, etc.Part II covers -- in detail -- the Art of Hebrew calligraphy, with clear diagrams for how to make the strokes for forming each letter.Part III explains the principles of layout design, Part IVdiscusses displaying your work, and Part V has suggestions for marketing. There is also information of choosing writing materials, paints and inks for illumination, samples of border designs, etc.

The book itself is oversized, printed on quality paper with a nice dustcover and, on the cover itself, gold-color embossing. All in all, a fine resource for Hebrew calligraphers. ... Read more
