4-0 out of 5 stars interesting discussion of Jewish ethics
In this little book, the author tries to answer the following questions:

1. What's unique about Jewish business ethics, as opposed to secular or utilitarian ethics? Pava addresses three unique principles in Jewish law: (1) the notion of differing levels of responsibility to the needy (that is, that one's obligations to family, employees, etc. take priority over faraway obligations); (2) the principle against "acting in the ways of Sodom"- that one has a duty not to take a maximum profit if another gains and the profit-taker does not lose; and (3) the idea of "acting beyond the letter of the law" (i.e. moral obligations beyond legal requirements).

2. How is Jewish business ethics relevant to a world which is not Jewish? Pava admits that specific Jewish legal rules are not binding upon non-Jews; however, the broader, aspirational values underlying these rules are useful to all businesses because they are "noncoercive, universal and speak directly to current problems."

But it seems to me that there is a trade-off involved: the more distinctive Jewish ethics are, the less universal (and thus the less useful to the broader business world) they might be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Business Ethics as a Guide for Modern Managers
This book provides an excellent introduction to basic principles of Jewish ethics which still have relevance to modern business activity. It contrasts the Jewish approach to business ethics with various secular theories. There is a very cogent defense of corporate social responsibility based on Jewish legal principles. The book, which is very clear and well-written, demonstrates the continuing importance and creativity of Jewish law for both Jewish and non-Jewish managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book
This book was fascinating and dealt with several ethical issues in depth. This was not a halakah book of short answers, but rather more of a discussion. ... Read more

I thought this book would provide information on what to look for when examining financial statements, it didn't.It's an ok reference book, but not too far from what you'd find in a text book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, clearly written, NO humor a plus
Though I am in my fifties, I am new to business statements having never had to be involved with them in my career. Now I am interested in making intelligent investments and need to understand not only the bottom line but all those other lines as well.

This book is concise, uses many examples, clearly defines terms and goes into the reasoning that determines how information is presented in business statements. You will be able to understand as well the ratios that appear in analyst reports such as those put out by Standard and Poor's.

Wonderfully free of the attempts to be funny that pollute so many texts these days, no words are wasted. This work should be on the bookshelf of anyone involved with business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother...
This series of books has generlly been good; however, this title was a bit of a let down.In particular, the financial statement presentation was so general (and dated) that it was diffcult to translate it to current trends in financial reporting.

I ended up paging through it wihout ever taking the time to read it.I would have liked some industry specific information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Corporation
I incorporated with the pointers from this book. Wasn't as hard as I first thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Considering how dry the subject material is, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book is not only a great resource, but quite easily readable as well.I bought the book a while ago, kept staring at it, and just dreaded even starting. But I was needlessly avoiding it, as the material is presented in a easily understandable manner (even a bit of humor from time to time, if you keep in mind we are talking about lawyers writing this...).Highly recommended, particularly with regards to tips on the differences in stock classifications and way that financiers can take advantage of you if you don't understand completely the differences.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
This book is ok. It's written in a very boring way.I found it just ok and for me it is a refresher since I had this in law school. I do not think it's the best book out there on the subject. And the first one I brought fell apart, but I called the publisher directly and they shipped me another; though I suspect they didn't believe me. LJ Reboh

4-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed instructions on "How-To" create your Corp.
For the already somewhat "Business Literate" the Essential Corporation Handbook provide most of the details needed to setup your corporation, initial meetings you must hold and formalities you must adhere to. A very handy reference used often in the early days of forming my corporation. Displays sample of most of the documents you will be dealing with early on. I'm a lawyer, and after readiing this book all I have to say is just that it's great. The legal forms it has, do and don't forms, are very useful. I strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only contract reference you'll ever need
I am a recovering lawyer. That said, as an entrepreneur, my partnersalways look to me to keep an eye on things legal, and this book has been mygreatest ally in the effort.

The author and I share the same viewsabout contracts: they should be clear; as brief as possible (withoutleaving out anything necessary); and in plain English.

This book will bea tremendous resource for anyone preparing a contract and for anyonereviewing a contract. You will find a wealth of hints, including plenty ofexamples of BOTH good and bad contracts and clauses, in addition to thefine commentary on the many types of contracts. In addition, theorganization is very useful, with chapters focusing on the major types ofcontract businesspeople are likely to see.The chapters coveringgeneralsubjects (including "Clauses. . .Standard and Dangerous") aregood guidance for lawyers and excellent introductions for non-lawyers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Business Plan around
I highly recommend BUSINESSPLAN.COM. In fact, it isn't about settng up a dot-com company as some might think. For example; the book showed us how to cut costs and expand our company by using the Internet'stechnology for routine business activities such as supply chain management, customer service, marketing, and human resources-an enormous cost savings for us. Each chapter focused on the essential components we needed to employ for our business model; this book is the only one we found that could help us do this. Before you launch your business-go get this great book!

1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't get a thing from this book.
This book seems horribly dated. I question the authors own credentialsbased on the environment we are seeing in today's Internet economy.Particularly in light of Dottie Downturn with IPOs losing steam and themedium is growing increasingly competitive and a feeding frenzy of largercorporations with ties beyond the Net has absolutely started. This book didnot give me the information I had hoped. Yes, I get the concept of buildinga solid business plan, but this offered nothing more than any other genericbusiness plan book for me. Where's the substance for our eComm-drivenenvironment?

5-0 out of 5 stars E-Profit is what we can all do
In the economic environment that we have at the moment, it feels like everyone around us is making huge amounts of money from simple internet ideas. This book gives clear guidance in how to profit from therevolutionary changes in the new media called the internet. The continualtransformaton of the internet has made it had for alot of start up internetcompanies to prosper and most off all MAKE A PROFIT. All you will need isan idea, as Joanne Eglash is clearly set out the processes neccessary towrite an effective business plan and a make it a successful business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mostly about business issues but not entirely
Most of this book is about what businesses must do: how to avoid misleading advertising, overcharging customers, etc.But Levine does touch on a few issues relating to "everyday ethics", pointing out that:

*One has no duty to answer uninvited phone calls (based on halachic precedent involving uninvited visitors). But your voice mail or answering machine should not promise to return messages unless you actually plan to return them.

*One can deter burglars by placing a large dog dish in front of a house or posting stickers for a nonexistent burglar alarm company- but a "Bad Dog" sign goes too far by deterring harmless visitors as well as dangerous ones.

*If a acquaintance asks you for a ride, you should give it to him if you don't lose anything thereby (e.g. by having to go out of your way).

One possible weakness: Levine occasionally discusses government's duties (e.g. in his discussion of medical research). But how relevant is Jewish law to secular society? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DATED MATERIAL
I had to return the book. The material was several year's old and thus very dated. The index was also in very bad shape. Many of the entries were not indexed properly making it diffcult to do research. This book needs a major update and a good copy editor to review it.

5-0 out of 5 stars How did they do it?
I work in the publishing industry, and I was impressed by the layout of this book. No wasted space just the facts M'am. Must have been a lot of work to collect all the data on these companies and clean it up for presentation in this comprehensive volume. If you're thinking of getting involved in any franchise operation, you owe it to yourself to own this book. I hope there will be a second edition soon. But is too bad that those facts and figures do not tell you how much money you will make

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Franchise Book on the Market
This is a big book and undoubtedly the best on the market for finding facts about franchises in general and any one franchise in particular. It is full of suggested web sites, but I found more information in this onebook, on franchises, than I could gather from the Internet after surfingaround for two weeks on the information highway. If you want to know thecheapest start-up costs for any franchise, one table shows them in orderfrom the least expensive to the most. And there's similar tables forcomparisons in franchise fees, franchise royalties, advertising royalties, and scads of others. And if you want to look up McDonald's, you findBurger King, Wendy's, and all the others compared together.Nothing hasbeen on the market like this, in a book, that I've ever found, and I was inthe franchise business for over ten years. It's better than the Bond book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PASSION FUELS SUCCESS
Alexandra Powe Allred brings an inspiring and informative book based on 25 examples of women who have achieved astounding success in business, along with what drove them to their heights. You will learn how to "identify your chosen field" how to break down boundaries, "doing your homework" how to "market yourself and your business" and much more. One of my favorite examples for strategy is about Jenny Craig, and the "recommended steps for success" provided: "Set your goal;" "Understand your market;" "Research several aspects of the business and your product"; "Identify your resources"; "Learn what you need to know"; "Develop your marketing skills"; "Hone your people skills"; "Believe in yourself and your goal."

Most importantly, this book will inspire you to hopefully look within and discover what you are absolutely PASSIONATE about doing and being in your life. It is your heart-felt passion that fuels your energy to do what it takes to live your dreams, while you joyfully create the success you deserve along the way.

Highly recommended for the inspiring stories of HOW women started from scratch and created the life and success they deserve, as well as for the in-depth resource guide at the back of the book, bringing you complete contact information for excellent organizations and publications, that can aid you in creating the success you deserve.

Product Description
This comprehensive volume examines the `big business', such as health care corporations and insurance companies, that has grown up around rehabilitation of the disabled in the United States, and the impact that this has had on care.

Albrecht discusses how the quality of care is influenced by income, income potential and insurance cover and traces how the financial growth in this industry has changed the nature of the care provided. He also presents a realistic assessment of the policy options and solutions available to a society that values equity in ensuring that quality rehabilitation services are equally available to all.
