1-0 out of 5 stars Dated, old thoughts
Not worth your time reading. This is old ideas that are not relevant in the 2000s.
Try another book. The "All About" series of books in below the information in the "___blanK____ for Dummies" books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me learn the basics about Index Funds
Written well enough, a family member recommend I buy this book, I did, and now know more options for investing my money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information but lots of errors and omissions
I have almost finished reading this book (happily, borrowed from the library, it isn't worth owning) and I think it has a lot of excellent and useful information.I just finished The Four Pillars of Investing and felt that there wasn't quite enough info on how to create my own portfolio - not only asset allocation percentages but the actual choice of funds, ETFs, etc. So, I had hoped this book would help in filling in that gap, and to some degree it does.Although somewhat narrow in scope, I have learned some interesting and helpful details. So, 3 stars.

However, I began writing this review earlier:

I am only as far along as page 7 and am already dismayed to see such a poor writing style. For example, this is not a sentence: "Measures market weight is simple" - perhaps this is a typo and it is supposed to read "Measuring...". OK.

Next, how about: "....the Dow covered only 12 stocks, people began to view it as an index of stock prices by which to measure stock prices against." Yikes!!"against which to measure stock prices" is some improvement, no?

And this clunker: "Thus so far, we have..."

On page 77 the spellchecker error again, vis - "Broad market funds have better tax-management opportunities in a niche market such as a small-cap..."To make sense of this it (I believe) is supposed to read "...opportunities THAN a niche market..." but who can be sure? How many little errors like this are there?Which ones did you catch?Worse - which ones did you miss?

Now on page 82, all of the data related to the "Tax Swapping" example is missing - it seems two tables of purchase information were intended. One can still get the idea, but having the information (costs/shares/dates) would be quite helpful.

Finally, if you can decipher this, you probably don't need Index Funds and can go ahead and anticipate the market with ease - so buy stocks! ;)

"A successful sector fund investing diversified their portfolio into several sectors so they will not be hurt badly when one sector takes a tumble."

Now on page 252 it gets really frustrating, because here we are creating a portfolio to meet retirement goals."...we create an asset allocation between stocks and bonds that is expected to deliver a 7 percent return (see Table 14-1)."

But, no that is not what Table 14-1 is about. No as in the next example is Table 14-2 described correctly. So it seems that 2 of the most important tables (how to create a portfolio of bond/stocks that will meet a certain percentage return) are missing.I've read this several times and these tables are related to something else that is discussed further in the chapter.

And the pitch for one of his now out of print books (saddled with a bad title he explains) is really kind of pathetic. He should suggest other books on the topic rather than suggest you look around for used copies of his!

OK.Small potatoes?Maybe.Nevertheless, it makes one wonder about other errors, right?Perhaps the 3rd edition will be more felicitously edited?A little bit less clanging against the ear in terms of grammar? :)And, more importantly, a thorough and precise read through before it goes off to the press? And not just by the spell checker!!I hope so, as these errors and omissions GREATLY detract from a very practical and useful book.

Two stars wouldn't be unfair.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bit dry compared to All about Asset Allocation but still very very good
I love Richard Ferri's books. This is one of them.
If you are clueless about financial investment and want to get started on it, then read this book. Also recommended are All about Index Funds, Serious Money, and The ETF Book. Unlike books that promote sales pitch and sell garbages like (IBD: Investor's Business Daily or even Wall Street Journal) Ferri provides sound studies done on investment strategies, sound strategies, expectation and mindset.

However it does not cover all the story. You still need to understand our debt-based economic structure and fractional banking monetary system to avoid heavy losses during severe recession or depression. I recommend The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve and Crash Proof: How to Profit From the Coming Economic Collapse (Lynn Sonberg Books) for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book on index funds
I have been doing a self-study on investing topics this year and previously read several books on indexing by Jack Bogle [my hero, and an erudite writer], and Morningstar's Christine Benz [Clear and concise], but I think this is my favorite. Ferri is laser sharp in explaining investing concepts, and reads like you are learning one-on-one from an excellent business school professor. I bought this book because I had already read his also excellent book on asset allocation. This would be a perfect book if it was better edited. The text and content is fine but there are typos, repeated words, etc. Ferri's work deserves better, but I still very highly recommend the book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly simplistic, feels like a sales pitch
1. The book spends more time covering such intricacies as what a bull market it, how to draw a trend line on a stock and what options are rather than was indices are, how they are built, how they are constructed, how they behave and how the exist in an international context, let alone how they contribute to portfolio dynamics and pitfalls to avoid when dealing with them.
2. Author makes an overt effort to promote his firm, Optionetics, throughout the text and encourages day trading of instruments.

If you're a day trader have fun with this. If you're on Wall Street and need a serious reference this is not worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you trade options this is a must have!!!
This book has some great information on how to trade Indexes. It is broken out into sections, so if you are new to options it will walk you through the basics of what an option is and the different option strategies that are used for markets that are trending either up, down, or sideways (no movement). Unlike playing stock, If you are a savy options player you can make money no matter what the market does.

If you are a more advanced options trader you can skip past the basic chapters to read about the different indexes that are available to trade and how you can leverage indexes where the underlying is based on Gold, Treasury Bills or Foreign Markets.

This is one of the best Options Books I have ever purchased and if you are a serious options investor it is a must have for your library. I had to write the review becuase, if I kept this gem to myself it would do disservice to the Authors and I want to encourage them to release future editions of this book.

Although inflation is much feared for its negative effects on the economy, how to measure it is a matter of considerable debate that has important implications for interest rates, monetary supply, and investment and spending decisions. Underlying many of these issues is the concept of the Cost-of-Living Index (COLI) and its controversial role as the methodological foundation for the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Price Index Concepts and Measurements brings together leading experts to address the many questions involved in conceptualizing and measuring inflation. They evaluate the accuracy of COLI, a Cost-of-Goods Index, and a variety of other methodological frameworks as the bases for consumer price construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid and well formed chapters
I found this book to be informative and relevant to my investing style. I liked the format and the specific chapter headings...It's a good sized book but there is a lot to cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic concepts, but do not try this at home
Indexing is definitely the most cost effective way to invest and to control how your assets are allocated. At the end of the day, what ultimately drives return, is an intelligent asset allocation strategy and minimizing costs.A good financial planner who believes in this strategy should help you implement the asset allocation and monitoring processes. If the proper investment tools are used you can have the investments and the investment advice for less than the cost of the average mutual fund.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why indexing is the starting point for your asset allocation
An important disclaimer: I am a specialist index portfolio manager a major index fund manager

This is an excellent book that contains all the important reasons why your asset allocation should start with indexing and then think about active managers (not the other way around - pick the market haystack, not the active manager needle). The important points have not changed over the years, including during the bear market of 2000-2001.The bottom line is that costs matter.

I was most impressed with chapter 19, which well describes the index portfolio management process and demonstrates how much more difficult it is to deliver benchmark returns than what people think.Every person who glibly retorts 'a trained monkey could manage an index fund' and 'what do you guys do all day anyway?' should read this.Index portfolio management is aunique challenge and we're always on a hiding to nothing to achieve this outcome.

The chapters are well researched and there are plenty of references for the interested reader.

It is a large book, but all the chapters are self contained and there is no loss of continuity by reading chapters individually.

I ended up giving it four stars however as the low quality paper on which it was printed makes the book feel a little cheap. For a $90 book the publishers could do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for those interested in index funds/ETFs
This book is quite simply contains the best information on the subject of indexing.

It tracks the beginnings of index products and pays respects to the pioneers that developed this type of investing.Mr. Shoenfeld thoroughly decribes the myriad of vehicles that are available for investors today (this list grows every day it seems).

But what really makes this book shine is thereal-life examples and guest writers.Books about investment theory often lack concrete illustrations of the theories they espouse.Mr. Shoenfeld descibes in detail how and why individual investors, pension plans, and hedge funds use index products. In many cases, fund managers write the chapters.Getting this information "from the horse's mouth" allows insight into thought processes of those responsible for investing millions of dollars.

The scope of the book is amazing, and even more is available on the e-ppendix on the Web. Congratulations to the author on putting together a massive reference book on the subject of indexing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook
Steve Schoenfeld's edited volume, "Active Index Investing," is a welcome addition to the literature on financial management.Although rigorous in content, its clear-to-follow chapters and illustrative sidebars combine to make this book extraordinarily useful as a primary textbook on MBA or executive education courses on financial analysis, financial instruments, fixed income asset pricing, and portfolio management. In addition, several chapters, including those dealing with enhanced indexing and benchmarks, will be of particular interest to scholars who are interested in the theoretical literature on portfolio management.Overall, "Active Index Investing" is a winner and gets my highest recommendation due to its clarity and breadth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
You will learn all of the basics of ETFs and E-Mini stock futures from this book. The author explains the history of both products and different strategies to trade each one. His experience working for CME helps as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Foundational Information
I won't complain about this book at all. It has very good basic information on trading the futures market. Experience traders may not need this but this is a very good starting point and think that is essential for all beginners to own this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars E-BOOK HAS PROBLEMS
I recently purchased the e-book since I'm located overseas (in Saudi Arabia) and postage is sometimes more than the cost of the books. It also takes in excess of 3 weeks to get mail here from the States.I purchased and downloaded the e-book and was all set to print.I could only print the first 14 pages and then was notified by the Abode print driver that I could not print any more pages that day. After doing some checking I found that permissions were set by the publisher that only allowed printing 35 pages every 7 days - what a rip off!!!By the time I can finally print the last pages we'll be celebrating July 4th 2004 (well maybe not that long). But the idea that printing is being restricted after purchase is outrageous. I have written Amazon to inform them.At the very least the publisher should advise of this practice BEFORE YOUR PURCHASE.I will not purchase any e-books until this practice by Wiley is discontinued.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for biginners in ETFs and Emini futures
This is a well written book and easy to read about the history of ETFs and Emini futures. The author describes the creation of the likes of SPY, QQQ, SMH. Why is it important to know about these instruments, how they get created, who manages them, their cost effective investing over regular mutual funds. He goes in great detail by listing all EFTs available today with their tickers as well, till the point I don't need to keep going to the internet. I started trading the EFTs for profit and for hedging in particular after reading this book. The introduction about the Emini futures is useful and gave me a good start in this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for beginner
good book for beginner who wants to know about ETFs (like me). helped me in reviewing my holdings.

Product Description
With globalisation a reality, companies no longer have a choice about whether to do business across borders. But it contains hidden risks - and firms need strategies and tactics for recognising and managing those risks. In "Global Edge", Joel Kurtzman and Glenn Yago offer two breakthrough tools for better managing the hard-to-see perils of going global. Their CLEAR framework explains the specific - and potentially expensive - challenges businesses face overseas: corruption, the legal system, enforcement policy, accounting standards and governance, and regulatory developments. And the Opacity Index (a proprietary tool updated online for readers) measures how countries are ranked relative to each CLEAR factor, so companies can balance their exposure. Drawing on a decade of fieldwork with companies and governments, the authors present a new way to anticipate, analyse, and manage hidden global business risks. In an age when a systematic understanding of global risks is still in its infancy, this insightful and practical guide takes the subject from the realm of academic interest and plants it squarely in management circles. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Provocative guide to risky business
Joel Kurtzman and Glenn Yago recommend that you do your homework before you invest in a country. Otherwise, problems such as corruption, weak legal systems, inefficient enforcement policies, deliberately confusing or illegal accounting procedures and dysfunctional regulations can increase your costs of doing business or even thwart your efforts. Learn what to expect before you go. The authors have developed an "Opacity Index" that aggregates information on these complex factors to help individuals and companies formulate strategies to protect themselves against the risks of globalization. They also offer a useful, contrarian perspective on a range of issues, for example, they question the vogue for investing in Brazil, Russia, India and China - highly opaque countries, according to their index. getAbstract recommends this book to managers who are responsible for committing their organizations' capital.

5-0 out of 5 stars Global Edge
I used to think that any book that is tied to some instrument, like the "Opacity Index," would be as exciting as watching paint dry.I was wrong.

Global Edge is a celebration of clear, quantitative thinking...something that is noticeably lacking in the academic and business discussions around transparency and global risk. Most of the experts and virtually all of the literature dealing with transparency and corruption tend toward the "softer side" of sense making...too much evangelization and not enough fact based discourse.

This is not a new problem.Anyone who has pursued formal research is familiar with the old axiom: "If you can measure it, it probably isn't worth the trouble."This is an exception to that rule, in that Kurtzman and Yago identify and measure risks that may, indeed, make a substantial impact on the bottom line.

Does it provide all the answers?No....but it goes a long way toward giving the reader a fact-based and context driven understanding of global risk.

Don't leave your home(or plan a new venture into a 3rd world country) without it.
