Excerpt:TransLink (legally the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority) is the organization responsible for the regional transportation network of Metro Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada, including public transport and major roads and bridges. TransLink was created in 1998 (then called the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority, or GVTA) and fully implemented in April 1999 by the Government of British Columbia to replace BC Transit in the Greater Vancouver Regional District and assume many transportation responsibilities previously held by the provincial government. TransLink is responsible for various modes of transportation in the Metro Vancouver region. Some of its operations extend into the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). On November 29, 2007, the province of British Columbia approved legislation changing the governance structure and official name of the organization. Buses in Metro Vancouver are operated by two companies. Coast Mountain Bus Company, a subsidiary of TransLink, operates regular transit buses, powered by diesel or natural gas, in most of the region's municipalities and trolley buses primarily within the City of Vancouver. The District Municipality of West Vancouver owns and operates the Blue Bus system serving West Vancouver and Lions Bay. The schedules, fares, and routes of these services are integrated with other transit services operated by TransLink. Within the City of Vancouver, buses generally run on a grid system, with most trolley bus routes operating r...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=356319 ... Read more

Chapters: Williams Lake, British Columbia. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 88. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Williams Lake, British Columbia -Williams Lake is named in honor of Secwepemc chief William, whose counsel prevented the Shuswap from joining the Chilcotin in their uprising against the settlers. The story of Williams Lake began in 1860 during the Cariboo Gold Rush when Gold Commissioner Philip Henry Nind and Constable William Pinchbeck arrived from Victoria to organize a local government and maintain law and order. At the time, two pack trails led to the goldfields, one from the Douglas Road and another trail through the Fraser Canyon. Both met at William's Lake, which made it a good choice for settlers and merchants. By 1861, Commissioner Nind had built a government house and had requested the funds to build a jail. With the center of local government being at Williams Lake, the miners and businessmen all had to travel there to conduct their business and soon the town had a post office, a courthouse, a roadhouse and the jail that Nind had requested. Meanwhile, William Pinchbeck had not been idle and had built his own roadhouse, saloon and store. Eventually he would own most of the valley. In 1863, the town was excited by the news of the construction of Cariboo Road, believing it would pass through their already established and important trading center. However, the roadbuilder Gustavus Blin Wright rerouted the original trail so that it bypassed Williams Lake and went through 150 Mile House instead. The Williams Lake by-pass was the coming of doom for Williams Lake and accusations flew that Gustavus Blin Wright had changed the route for his own personal benefit as he owned a roadhouse at Deep Creek along the new route. Regardless of Wright's motives, Williams Lake wa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1438676 ... Read more

Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 39. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Cloverdale is a town centre of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, located near Langley, which is east of Vancouver. It is near several border crossings into the United States. Cloverdale, the historic center of Surrey, B.C., is home to many heritage sites, and is over one hundred years old. One of its oldest buildings, Surrey Centre Elementary, has been rebuilt many times over the years and still stands today, having most recently been rebuilt once again in 2003. Classes there are still in session for kindergarten through grade seven. Cloverdale is also the home to the City of Surrey's official Museum. Although Cloverdale is part of the city of Surrey, it is common for it to be referenced as a separate entity (much as, for example, Brooklyn is often referenced as its own community, despite being part of the larger New York City). William Shannon was one of the first settlers to the Fraser Valley region. He was inspired to name the area from the clover that grew there in abundance. Cloverdale is best known outside its immediate vicinity as the primary "main street" and "downtown" sets for the television show Smallville. A billboard on the edge of the community reads, "Destination Cloverdale - Home of Smallville." The community has been home to other filming, including one of Coca-Cola's Christmas commercials. Despite filming during summer, the town square was decked with Christmas decorations, including fake snow. In June 2006, a film titled Deck The Halls was filmed, and the area was once aga...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4545112 ... Read more

Chapters: Bountiful, British Columbia. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 29. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt:Bountiful is a settlement located in the Creston Valley of southeastern British Columbia, Canada, near Cranbrook and Creston. The closest community is Lister, British Columbia. Bountiful's community is made up of members of a polygamist Mormon fundamentalist group. The polygamists live in a commune-style compound outside of Lister. The settlement is named after Bountiful in the Book of Mormon. The first member of the group that purchased property near Lister was Harold (aka) Micheal Blackmore, who moved there with his family in 1946. Other members of the church who believed in the principles of plural marriages soon followed. After Winston Blackmore became the bishop in the 1980s, the group took the name of Bountiful. In 1998 the estimated population was 600 and has since grown to about 1,000. Most of the residents are descended from only half a dozen men. The Mormon fundamentalists in Bountiful have divided into two groups: about half are members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church), and the other half are members of an FLDS-offshoot based on the teachings of their bishop, Winston Blackmore, who split with the FLDS Church after concluding the president of the church, Warren Jeffs, had exceeded his authority and become too dictatorial. On April 19, 2005 Bountiful's leaders held an extensive press conference in an effort to dispel many of the allegations of abuse that had surrounded their community. Bountiful has come under intense scrutiny for its involvement in the polygamous sect. Warren Jeffs, who was considered one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, is thought to have visited a dozen or so times in 2005. The Vancouver Sun...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1082034 ... Product Description
The old buildings and historic places of British Columbia form a kind of "roadside memory," a tangible link with stories of settlement, change, and abandonment that reflect the great themes of Western history. More than a decade ago, Michael Kluckner began painting these dots on his personal map of the province in a watercolor sketchbook. With small towns declining and old rural properties changing, so little of the history of these places has been recorded in museums or archives, and so much of it may disappear "within a heartbeat" as families disperse and memories dim.

After he put a few of the sketches onto his web site, a network of correspondents emerged that eventually led him to the family letters, photo albums, and memories from a disappearing era. Vanishing British Columbia is a record of these places and the stories they tell, and an argument for stewardship of regional history in the face of urbanization and globalization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving tribute to a vanishing world
Even as the face of British Columbia is changing, artist Michael Kluckner is capturing a vanishing region in watercolors, as best he can. Vanishing British Columbia uses words and images to examine ethnic sites and diverse roadside towns and worlds. Historic towns, houses, railways, and more are given strong social and historical treatment in a moving tribute to a vanishing world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Might as well have bought a Fodor's
Perhaps erroneously, I expect Lonely Planet guides to cater to the smart and budget-conscious traveler. Far too many of the hotels and especially the restaurants in this guide were waaay out of my price range. Further, the writer recommends Granville Island as a must-see of artists studios and a farmer's market, when it was actually a Disneyland version of such. Lastly, her chipper enthusiasm for diversity-as-consumer-product chafed. Better to get Douglas Coupland's City of Glass; it's not a guidebook per se, but it's a better guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Travel
I tend to buy a small guide to carry around and a bigger one such as lonely planet that has more indepth information, but this trip I didn't use the lonely planet that much and stuck with the Top 10 travel guide most of the time, although I suppose it helped that I was visiting someone who lives in Vancouver.I highly recommend the top 10 guide (much better to carry around for quick access of info.)The benefit of the Lonely planet guide I think is to use it ahead of time when planning things out and using the book info to supplement internet research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for tourism and more
Whether you are planning to visit Vancouver as a tourist, or you are doing preliminary research about it as a potential permanent destination later in your life, Lonely Planet Vancouver sums it all up nicely for you. The first few pages do a great job of giving the newcomer a birdseye view of the city's composition, lifestyle, culture, etc. The book moves on to cover other aspects from dining to outdoors activities and much more in a detailed yet not overwhelming way.

The only shortcoming this guide (as well as other Lonely Planet books) has is a lack of more pictures, which other series such as DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides excel at. However the competing book about Vancouver in that series is nowhere near as comprehensive as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated version - A great improvement
I read reviews of the last version and the Lonely Planet people have really taken on board the feedback people gave. Its easy to read, VERY up to date and has some great additions. A great top 10 things to do in Vancouver, it details the top restaurants, good summaries of local areas etc. Its a brilliant overview and now we have our trip all maped out! Its well laid out and the use of color is helpful too. One of the best city guides I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unorganized
The book contains a lot of information for sure. The thing is for a first time visitor it does not really provide a big help. Which things are a must to see? The book does not say. Instead the reader is forced to read each every section of the book because the book is divided into sections, each covering a part of the city.

All in all it is a bit disappointing. ... Read more

Product Description
North Vancouver is one of the most historic areas of BC's Lower Mainland, with a district population of more than 120,000 people, and more than 45,000 living in the City of North Vancouver itself. The area's easy access to downtown Vancouver, its multi-use waterfront and many recreational opportunities have made it one of the province's most desirable places to live, an enviable mix of residential and commercial development in the midst of one of the most spectacular natural settings in the world.

But how did this thriving multicultural city develop from a hodgepodge of wood frame buildings and muddy trails in just 100 years? The Ambitious City details the fascinating story of North Vancouver, from the migration of the Squamish people to Burrard Inlet, to the settlement of Moodyville in the 1800s through to the city's incorporation in 1907. The development of the area's shipbuilding industry and the economic and cultural revitalization of Lonsdale Avenue is also covered.

Published in honour of the City of North Vancouver's 2007 centennial, The Ambitious City is a dynamic popular history that includes first-person accounts as well as a host of archival photos and illustrations. Warren Sommer skillfully connects the community's history with that of the province, covering ethnic relations, colonialism, labour history and politics.

Product Description
This third and final volume in Jan Peterson’s Nanaimo trilogy traces the city’s development from 1920 through 1967, as it continued its transformation from a small mining town to a bustling, booming city.

Nestled between the mountains and the sea, this beautiful, historic city lived through the same 20th-century challenges faced by the rest of Canada, but many of its triumphs and accomplishments have been one-of-a-kind. During the Depression, for example, the city built the South Fork Dam, a project that employed hundreds and still supplies water today. Overcoming adversity, including two devastating fires, has been a hallmark of this community. Adaptability is another; when coal gave way to oil, the city made forestry its economic base and developed its port, making it a vital transportation centre.

Leading readers through the Roaring ’20s, the hardscrabble Depression years, the disruptions of two world wars and beyond to the prosperous ’50s and rocking ’60s, Peterson brings to life Nanaimo’s people and the events that shaped it.
