5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended even forgeographic illiterate adults!
Any country that is presented under the cultures of the world series is pretty good. Cultures of the world offers the reader an insight into another country's culture, history, and customs.Everything from language and history to economic standing and traditional celebrations are covered under cultures of the world. They are great books and though they are mainly under children's literature, these books are also recommended for adults that are illiterate on the culture and geography of other nations. These books present valuable cultural and geographic information in a brief form with simple writing that highlights the most important aspects of the culture. That is why these books are recommended even for adults because the writing is clear and easy enough for lazy adults to understand another culture without getting confused.Cultures of the World also offers many colorful pictures on the country and its people.
Wether its Bangladesh or Estonia the Cultures of the World Series offers valuable insights to the cultures of the world.
Most of the time the informatrion is pretty accurate and helpful although it varies from country. In the case of this review for Bangladesh, the information is accurate enough. ... Read more

Product Description

The past decade has seen a marked policy focus upon Bangladesh, home to nearly 150 million Muslims; it has attracted the attention of the world due to weak governance and the rising tide of Islamist violence. This book provides a broad-ranging analysis of the growth and impact of "political Islam" in Bangladesh, and reactions to it. Grounded in empirical data, experts on Bangladesh examine the changing character of Bangladeshi politics since 1971, with a particular focus on the convergence of governance, Islamism and militancy. They examine the impacts of Islamist politics on education, popular culture and civil society, and the regional and extraregional connections of the Bangladeshi Islamist groups.

Bringing together journalists and academics - all of whom have different professional and methodological backgrounds and field experiences which impact upon these issues from different vantage points - the book assesses Bangladesh’s own prospects for internal stability as well as its wider impact upon South Asian security. It argues that the political environment of Bangladesh, the appeal of Islamist ideology to the general masses and the dynamic adaptability of Islamist organizations all demonstrate that Bangladesh will continue to focus the attention of policy makers and analysts alike. This is a timely, incisive and original explanation of the rise of political Islam and Islamic militancy in Bangladesh.

Excerpt: In the culture of South Asia, hijra (Hindi: , Urdu: Bengali: or ) or khusra in Punjabi are physiological males who adopt feminine gender identity, women's clothing and other feminine gender roles. They have a long recorded history in the Indian subcontinent, from the Mughal Empire period onwards. This history features a number of well-known roles within subcontinental cultures, part gender-liminal, part spiritual and part survival. In Pakistan, many hijra live in well-defined, organized, all-hijra communities, led by a guru. These communities have sustained themselves over generations by "adopting" young boys who are rejected by, or flee their family of origin. Many work as male sex workers for survival. The word hijra is Urdu, derived from the Arabic root hjr in its sense of "leaving one's tribe," and has been borrowed into Hindi. The Indian usage has traditionally been translated into English as "eunuch" or "hermaphrodite", where "the irregularity of the male genitalia is central to the definition". However, in general the hijra are born with typically male physiology, only a few having been born with male intersex variations. Historically, ceremonial initiation into the hijra community is said to have involved removal of a boy's penis, testicles and scrotum, without anaesthetic, at or around puberty. However, according to Mumbai health organisation The Humsafar Trust, only eight percent of hijras visiting their clinic are nirwaa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=301626 ... Read more
