Product Description
Throughout the postwar history of Indonesia, the military have played a key role in the politics of the country and in imposing unity on a fragmentary state. The collapse of the authoritarian New Order government of President Suharto weakened the state and the armed forces briefly lost their grip on control of the archipelago. However, under President Megawati, the military has again begun to assert itself, and re-impose its heavy hand on control of the state, most notably in the fracturing outer provinces. Based on extensive original research, this book examines the role of the military in Indonesian politics. It looks at the role of the military historically, examines the different ways it is involved in politics, and considers how the role of the military might develop in what is still an uncertain future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For a complete Iraq war perspective, a must read.
This was a very informative read for me.

However, I disagreed with the war from the onset as did many of my friends who are also Vietnam veterans.

I think this book is excellent and you'll find it immensely informative if you believe the Iraq war was wrong. If you believe the war was an absolute must in the war on terrorism, you'll see the book as more propaganda from the Liberal Left.

If you're a White Republican Male over 50 I would recommend NOT buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
What a shame. This book gives a good outline of the events of the war and what happens when politics, not military know how runs a war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD; Well Read; Fascinating but grim story.
I commute 64 miles a day by car and this CD made my commute fly by. The narrator helped me keep all the general straight-- all of whom were saying in one way or another: "This isn't going to work" or "What is Plan B once Plan A fails?". I sat in my office driveway listening to "Fiasco"!
I highly recomend it..........now I need to buy something else.....or wait for Tom Ricks to write a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars a rave from the author of the book

I wrote 'Fiasco' and was pleasantly surprised by how well it was done as an audiobook. I actually listened to it on my commute and enjoyed it. I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Illuminates some of the mistakes
This book provides a good analysis of some of the mistakes the U.S. made in the war in Iraq. I would classify the problems he describes into two main mistakes. First, the Bush administration imagined that WWII is a good analogy for the threat that the U.S. faces from the mideast. That wouldn't have been a particularly unusual problem in a war if they had corrected their worldview when they saw evidence of enemies using a very different strategy.
The biggest and least excusable problem was that the lack of anything clear enough to be called a military strategy. It almost sounds like Bush thought the sound bites used to market the invasion to voters amounted to an adequate description of military goals. This left various parts of the U.S. forces pursuing conflicting strategies that ranged from attempts to aid Iraqis in building a democracy to attempts to conquer Iraq for its Al-Qaeda connections, leaving U.S. forces to a confused pursuit of conflicting strategies that guaranteed increased Iraqi hostility toward the U.S. without accomplishing much else.
This book suffers somewhat from a narrow scope and an over-reliance on opinions from within the U.S. military. Ricks and his sources seem to be too optimistic that they've learned a strategy that has some chance of working if U.S. voters are patient enough, but they show no familiarity with the analysis in Robert Pape's book Dying to Win which suggests that the strategy advocated in Fiasco will perpetuate the conditions under which suicide bombings increase.
The book implies that a sufficiently wise set of leaders could have produced a strategy with a reasonable chance of success, but I'm left doubting that any U.S. overthrow of Saddam Hussein could have produced a good result.
The book is mostly cautious about historical events that the author can't verify, such as Bush's motives, and the extent to which U.S. policy was manipulated by Iran.
I'm curious why Fiasco doesn't devote much attention to the current Iraqi government. Possibly it is sufficiently tainted by its association with the U.S. that it is irrelevant, but if so I would have expected an argument to that effect. ... Read more

A sneak attack by an enemy power leaves thousands of Americans dead. A minority group in America is harassed for its ties to a foreign country. A worldwide conflict tests our resolve in combat abroad and our commitment to justice, equality, and liberty at home...From breathless battle scenes, masterfully handled in all their detail; to the unbreakable bonds of friendship in the field; to heart-wrenching stories of loss and discrimination on the mainland and in Hawaii, Just Americans tells the story of what Gen. George C. Marshall called the "most decorated unit in American military history for its size and length of service." It is also the story of soldiers in combat who were fighting a greater battle at home-a struggle that continues for minority groups today-over what it means to be an American.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Americans Just Missed
This book begins and ends in a County meeting room in Texas in 2004.A young woman is seeking to have the name of Jap Road changed because she finds the name offensive. The irony is that the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (made up of Japanese-Americans) rescued a surrounded unit of the 141st Regiment in the Vosges Mountains in France in 1944.This "Lost Battalion" was part of the 36th "Texas Division".Veterans of that division rallied to support the cause as a show of thanks and respect for the Japanese-American soldiers who rescued them. The book ends with the granting of the request after some controversy and debate. The offensive name was changed to Boondocks Road.

In between these bookends lies an interesting history of the plight of Japanese-American citizens during World War II at home and abroad. There is no doubt that the "forced relocation" of Japanese-Americans from the west coast was a stupid, ill-conceived and even shameful policy. But I think the author goes too far and continually beats the reader over the head with this "national disgrace".He seems to paint the entire country with the broad brush of racism even though Chinese and Koreans were not treated in a similar fashion. It was the national identity of the Japanese-Americans, not their race, which singled them out for this unfair treatment.

The author never even mentions the possibility that these Japanese-Americans were probably safer in these camps than being exposed to the odd crackpot who may seek revenge on them for Pearl Harbor. Not that this justifies any "internment" or any breach of their rights but there were other factors besides alleged "national racism" that played into this period of time.Economic considerations were a factor in seizing lands and farms as the Japanese-Americans were more efficient farmers than the locals in many cases. The Japanese-Americans in Hawaii were not interned and there were also internments of German and Italian resident aliens. It appears that fear rather than hatred motivated the Western Defense Command to evacuate the Japanese-Americans from the west coast. All of these points are debatable, I'm sure, but the author goes too far when comparing these camps to concentration camps!

Once the book moves into the history of the 100/442 Regiment, how they were formed and trained and the differences between mainlander and Hawaiian boys, the book becomes very interesting. There is a scholarly feel to the research and the detail and interviews give life and energy to the history. The battle passages are brilliant and compelling and I would have liked more of this, especially the early engagements in Italy. The bravery of these men is astounding. The mental toughness they displayed to risk their lives and fight for their country while their relatives were detained in camps is thought provoking and admirable. The book is at its best when extolling the virtues of these proud, courageous fighting men. They rose above all to prove their loyalty despite the fact that it should not have even been questioned. They took the high road. There were a few dissenters who refused to serve but the many that did carved a legacy in history that was so great, it proved beyond a doubt the folly and lunacy of Executive Order 9066.

The epilogue tries to relate this history to 911 in modern times. The book goes off the tracks again in attempting to do this. The author attempts to resolve the issues as perceived by Liberals and Conservatives. And here is where "political correctness" runs amok once again. There is no justification for Executive Order 9066.There may be extenuating circumstances that help propel this idiocy into law but there is no excuse for this mistake. And that's what it was, a mistake. No reason to over think it.America has learned its collective lesson and if anything has become over-sensitive to the issue of race. And remember, this incident in WWII was not racial.Even the author concedes it was one of "national origin".

A great deal of work went into this book. That is obvious as it is well sourced, fully indexed and has good maps.It is an academic tour de force. The author overreached and just missed. In addition, the dedication page shows an officer KIA in 1945 with the same name as the author.I can only assume this was a relative and I offer my condolences and my thanks for his service. The only other mistake I was surprised to find is that the author put the wrong Roosevelt on top of Mount Rushmore (p. 256).

So where does that leave us?Are we are more sensitive to offending others?Yes and no.We choose to change street signs and outlaw the use of certain words so as not to offend. But when relatives of murdered victims cry out that a mosque near ground zero is offensive to them, many call them islamaphobes and racists. We still have a long way to go when it comes to applying "fairness" even handedly.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important read for all Americans
1.I could go on for pages about the various issues related to the Internment, Nisei in WWII etc...But the bottomline is that this book is rare gem in that it could have been politically biases, but it wasn't. The author did an amazing job of just sticking with the facts, focusing on the military history of the niseis in WWII (some may find this kind of historical writing a bit dry), and only editorializing in the final section of the book. Even then, the author deftly brings out the pros / cons of opposing views in regards to the internment (back in WWII and in modern time). One may not agree with some of the author's conclusions, but certainly one cannot accuse him of being a political hack or close minded.

2.100% highly recommended to all Americans. And a job well done to the author who spent time and energy to document the sacrifices via the niseis who volunteered and fought for our country.

4-0 out of 5 stars important and excellent
I learned a great deal from this book. I knew much about the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II--I learned much more. I also knew a lot about WWII combat in Europe--I learned much more. I did not know much about the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. It should not be a surprise that I learned much about it, but, as I said, I learned many other things too. I doubted some of the facts presented, but I checked the most important one and found that it is true--21 Japanese-Americans were awarded Medals of Honor from World War II action. Because that fact was correct, I did not check most of the others. I am an old artilleryman. I had never before read of units being resupplied with critical supplies (morphine and other drugs, small arms ammo) via artillery fire. I am still amazed by this, but until I can disprove it, I must believe (and admire) it.
I did not give a five star rating because of the long description at the end of the book where the author brings in many different ways to prove the incompetence of government and military leaders in creating the internments. Some of this was interesting and worthy, but most had been well-demonstrated by that point in the book.
I am a better person for having read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good historical account
Two of the great injustices done by American during WWII were the segregation of troops and the movement of Japanese-Americans to concentration camps. To expand my knowledge on the later and to learn more about the 100th Battalion in particular (I've read about the 442nd Regimental Combat team fighting in the Vosges Mountains in such books as Lost Battalions and When the Odds Were Even: The Vosges Mountains Campaign, October 1944-January 1945).Developing this component, Mr. Asahina does a fantastic job describing the establishment and training of the 100th Battalion.I was particularly enamored with the differences between the Islanders and the Mainlanders. This was particularly poignant since the Islanders had no understanding of the transportation of Japanese-Americans to concentration camps following the attack on Pearl Harbor.Unfortunately Mr. Asahina did not provide much new information on the 100th Battalions efforts in Italy, something I consider a weakness since the book identifies itself as the story of the 100th Battalion in WWII.The units exploits from Dragoon thru operations in the Vosges is covered very nicely. At times it is a little difficult keeping the tactical picture together; this is mainly due to the confusing battlefield conditions, but the large numbers of veteran's accounts contributes to the confusion because of the difficulty in tracking the veteran with their unit.Other issues I had were the misstatement on Patton's 3rd Army operating in the Ardennes (within the focus of the book, the 3rd Army had completed operations against Metz and was preparing for the assault on the Saar) and stating that the Battle of the Bulge would not have happened if the 7th Army hadn't been stopped by Eisenhower (the 7th Army would have likely crossed the Rhine, but it would have been unlikely to have caused the abortion of Wacht am Rhein but probably would have radically changed Operation Nordwind).

Rating wise this one was a 3.5 star book. Two driving factors were that Mr. Asahina missed one of his two goals identified on the front cover (The story of the 100th Battalion, Mr. Asahina provided limited information on their combat experience prior to Operation Dragoon, something I really wanted to read about) and at points things were a little confusing due to the large number of oral accounts from veterans (I've suggested this before, but if they'd continually identify which unit the person was with or provide a Table of Organization and where the different veterans fit into it in the Appendix it would help readers a lot [in Mr. Asahina's defense, he does a good job reminding us which company the individuals are from]).Due to other factors (identified above) I'm rounding this one down to 3 stars.Having said this, I believe if you're of Japanese-American background or had a relative who served in the 442nd this book would easily become a 4 to 4.5 star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great piece of writing and great history
As a long time WWII history buff I can recommend this book without reservation. The author has researched this book very well and presents the facts in a compelling fashion. I was expecting certain passages to regarding how the Japanese-American population at home was treated to be one of finger-pointing, over-sentimentalization and playing the victim to gain sympathy. Boy was I wrong. Negative aspects of "exclusion", internment, and racism, are on the page but so are the bravery and resolve of these people to overcome them. The removal of the Japanese-American population from the west coast of the mainland while leaving the population of Japanese-Americans in Hawaii intact is spelled out in a way for the reader to discover the idiocy in it. For instance the reason given to the "evacuation" was the proximity of Japanese-Americans to military bases and facilities. Yet one of the future members of the 442d worked at Pearl Harbor helping to repair the facilities in the weeks and months after the attack! This book brings to light a story that should be read. ... Product Description
The uprooting and confinement of Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians during the Second World War constituted the worst violations of citizenship rights in 20th-century North America. Voices Raised in Protest examines the meaning and impact of these actions and how they diverged in Canada and the United States.

Many North Americans opposed their governments' wartime policies toward their fellow citizens of Japanese extraction. In this timely book, Stephanie Bangarth studies the efforts and discourse of anti-internment advocates, and discusses the various cases they brought before the courts. Persons of Japanese ancestry were also active in their own defense. Their critiques of the removal and deportation policies were seminal examples of a growing general interest in civil rights, and would provide a foundation for rights activism in subsequent years.

Voices Raised in Protest offers a valuable perspective for today's debates over ethnic and racial profiling, treatment of "enemy combatants," and tensions between civil-liberties and security imperatives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rescue Under Fire: /The Story of Dust Off in Vietnam
The book isgood historical presentation of the development of Dust Off in Vietnam. It focuses primarily on the pilots and their courage.Very little is mentioned about the medic and their heroic achievements.Dust Off medics saw more and did more than any other group of "field medic." The intimacy of the entire Dust Off team is totally missing in the book.Dust Off was more than just a pilot with three other guys going along for the ride. The author misses the uniqueness of the mobile relationship inside the UH-1H. Maybe he needs to write a sequel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dustoff in Vietnam
Aside from the obvious misspellings, grammatical errors, and sloppy editing, John Cook presents the story of Dustoff (Dustoff should be one word) quite well. The main body of the 45th Medical Company AA arrived in Vietnam on 13 July 1967 from Fort Bragg,NC.With 24 UH-1H helicopters, it added a tremendous presence to Dustoff efforts in Vietnam serving III and IV Corps areas which included the lower half of South Vietnam. As mentioned, Col Cook devoted only a few paragraphs to a Dustoff unit which probably accounted for a majority of evacuated casualties during the '67 to '68 time frame and perhaps later years as well.Hopefully he'll write a sequel which will shed some credit on the busiest and most dangerous Dustoff years.

For those unfamiliar, Dustoff units did not employ door gunners while the 1st Air Cavalry Division's "medevac" helicopters did. There is one misleading picture in the book which might lead readers to think otherwise.

Night and weather missions were often the most harrowing. Our unit SOP (standardized operating procedures) called for the requirement to have gunship coverage when going into hot LZ's (landing zones) in contact with the enemy. Most often, particularly at night and in weather, getting gunship coverage was impossible and following the Dustoff credo, we went with or without gunships, usually without.

Speaking on behalf of Dustoff crews, those of us who survived our Vietnam duty are proud to have served in such a meaningful job and thank Col Cook for bringing to light the story of Dustoff and those who made it happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A shinning, positive example of what went right in Vietnam.
As the son a Major Charles Kelly, I am gratified that there is a least one mainstream book that tells the story of the Dustoff pilots. It is sad that their story does not have the widespread recongition it deserves.I have access to hundreds of personal documents and have spoken with many of the men that flew with my father and as far as I can tell this book is very, very authentic and relies on fact not fiction as some articles have done. Not only that, but it is very well written and written from the heart.Thank you John Cook from the entire Kelly family......

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HISTORY OF DUSTOFF IN VIETNAM
I've read Rescue Under Fire several times and heartily recommend it as an overview of the history of Dustoff (aeromedical evacuation) in Vietnam. I served two tours as a Dustoff pilot and the book contained a great deal of historical information that I had never known and wouldn't have ever learned without John Cook's well researched book. I've given copies of the book to my father and both of my sons so that they can better understand what I did in Vietnam. Perhaps even more incredible than the missions under fire, which were performed over and over on a daily basis, is the effort that the early Dustoff pilots and commanders had to go through just to provide the kind of support that eventually became the standard by which present aeromedical evacuation procedures are measured. Far too frequently the egos of high level commanders stood in the way of dedicated Dustoff crews simply trying to do their job and to get the equipment and support necessary to do so.Two Dustoff pilots were awarded the Medal of Honor, but that doesn't even begin to recognize the job that was done by each and every Dustoff crew. I'm proud to have been a part of it and I thank John Cook for telling our story so eloquently.

5-0 out of 5 stars RecommendationsMatter
Do recommendations matter? You bet. After reading what the two pilots said below, the way I figured it was, they had to know what they were talking about. So, I read Rescue Under Fire.Once I started, I could not put it down.John Cook made the Vietnam war make sense, something no one else had ever done for me.He tells one hell of a story and he does not let up.He takes the reader on a fantastic ride and, at the end, you wind up staring out the window for a long time. One word of caution--if you are not willing to deal with what Cook has to say, don't read this book.If you are a bleeding heart liberal,he will shatterall your myths and leave you in a bloody heap. However, if you can deal with the truth of what Vietnam was all about, then I suggest you read this book.Cook tells the story of the real heros of Vietnam, the men who flew the evacuation mission, under fire. The part that got me was the end, where he lists the names of all the men who died performing this dangerous mission. He didn't have to do this, but he did.If you only read one book about Vietnam, make it this one. ... The Anglo-Maratha Campaigns of 1803 represented the last serious indigenous obstacle to the formation of the British Raj.This study examines Maratha military culture through a battle-by-battle analysis of the campaigns.Randolf Cooper challenges the ethnocentric assumptions that associate Western political ascendancy with "The Military Revolution" and argues that the real contest for India was the struggle to control the South Asian military economy, rather than a single decisive military battle. The A-M Campaign is surely not a subject for everyone, but it is one far too lightly covered (as is most of Indian history in the West)The author does a marvelous job of bringing all of the issues - especially the economic factors that led to much of this obvious British land-grab (reminded me of the US War with Mexico in the 1840's) - to the fore in much detail.I would think there would be some historians that will disagree with some/many of his theses - aren't there always? . . . but, for serious, or even humorous, students of this era, this is THE book.

Product Description

This book has a dual purpose. The first is to present a biography of Yamato Ichihashi, a Stanford University professor who was one of the first academics of Asian ancestry in the United States. The second purpose is to present, through Ichihashi’s wartime writings, the only comprehensive first-person account of internment life by one of the 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry who, in 1942, were sent by the U.S. government to “relocation centers,” the euphemism for prison camps.

Arriving in the United States from Japan in 1894, when he was sixteen, Ichihashi attended public school in San Francisco, graduated from Stanford University, and received a doctorate from Harvard University. He began teaching at Stanford in 1913, specializing in Japanese history and government, international relations, and the Japanese American experience. He remained at Stanford until he and his wife, Kei, were forced to leave their campus home for a series of internment camps, where they remained until the closing days of the war.

5-0 out of 5 stars "ELITE" STANFORD PROFESSOR INTERNED WITH THE REST
Detailed and exhaustive book by/about Ichihashi who came to the US from Japan in 1984 at the age of 16 to study. He graduated from Stanford, got a Ph.D. from Harvard, became a professor at Stanford. He and his wife and son "relocated" to Santa Anita and then Tule Lake and thenGranada (Amache) during WWII.He became embittered and an elitist duringthe war years, which is told in a very dramatic albiet exhaustive fashionin the book via his letters.Following relocation he and his wife returnedto a very different Stanford University and environs, which he found verydifficult to cope with.Very enjoyable book, personal as well ashistorical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital contribution to Asian American and internment history
Though long and at times cumbersome to read, this is a valuable addition to the literature in Asian American and World War II internment history. Yamato Ichihashi is an all but forgotten figure who has left a writtenrecord of his internment experience as he lived it, making this book a rareand important piece that all students of the internment should read. At thesame time, this book belongs to the body of literature in Asian Americansocial history. Who knew that in the early 1900s, Stanford University had aJapanese American professor among its faculty? What kind of life did helead considering his anomalous position as an academic compared to otherJapanese in America and the intense anti-Asian atmosphere of those times inthe West? How does knowledge of this man's life enrich our understanding ofAsian American history and American history at large? All of thosequestions are satisfyingly answered. Ichihashi's writings take center stagein the book, but Chang provides lucidly written annotations and abibliographic essay that make the volume quite readable and enjoyable.Chang allows Ichihashi's words to speak for themselves which allows thereader to get a very vivid picture of life in the internment camps. Inaddition, reading his thoughts about his circumstances as an academic, aprofessor at Stanford, and an internee offer rare and revealing insights. ... Read more

Product Description
She held few government posts, yet she was a strong influence on the course of U.S.-Asian relations in the last half of the twentieth century. The Chinese-born wife of General Claire Chennault of World War II Flying Tigers fame, Anna Chennault was a leader in America's informal relations with East Asia from 1950 to 1990. Professor Catherine Forslund's book, Anna Chennault: Informal Diplomacy and Asian Relations examines Chennault's unique, multifaceted career as an exemplar of American informal diplomacy during the postDWorld War II era. A fascinating look at a woman before her time, this new book is an informative and engaging account of the complex nature of U.S.-Asian relations, diplomatic processes, and the role of women in foreign affairs. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The original dinner host and October surprise.
Anna Chennault played a role in the post World War II Republican party. As the society widow of a war hero, she played the party host for up and coming Republicans in Washington D.C.'s society. She influenced Republican strategy to the Asia and especially the ROC and PRC.This hard line approach dictated policy which resulted in the cold war in Asia.
Even though China was Communist, her views influenced how the U.S. dealt in this crucial area of the Cold War.I am not sure this is a good thing, since Anna was from a prominent Peking family oppossed to the Communists.

One thing this book explains is the October surprise that Anna influenced. The RSV was against any peace overtures to DRVN, and so Anna's influence may have killed an earlier deal in Vietnam, and got RN elected President. This chapter makes it clear on what actually happened and does show RN influenced American policy before the 1968 election.

This book is a thesis for the author's PhD.Even though I don't like reading a thesis, this book explains well Anna's influence in the American political system.I think it explains well the subject's influence on American policy-right or wrong. ... Read more

Product Description

At the start of World War, II the U.S. Army turned to Americans of Japanese ancestry to provide vital intelligence against Japanese forces in the Pacific. Nisei Linguists: Japanese Americans in the Military Intelligence Service during World War II tells the story of these soldiers, how the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) recruited and trained them, and how they served in every battle and campaign in the war against Japan.

Months before Pearl Harbor, the Western Defense Command (WDC) selected sixty Nisei soldiers for Japanese-language training. When the WDC forcibly removed more than 100,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast, MIS continued to recruit Nisei from the relocation camps and later from Hawaii. Over the next four years, the school graduated nearly 6,000 military linguists, including dozens of Nisei women and hundreds of Caucasians.

Nisei Linguists tells the remarkable story of those who served with Army and Marine units from Guadalcanal to the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Their duties included translation, interrogation, radio monitoring, and psychological warfare. They staffed theater-level intelligence centers such as the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section in the Southwest Pacific Area. In China, Burma, and India they served with the Office of Strategic Services, Merrill’s Marauders, and Commonwealth forces. Others served with the Army Air Forces or within the continental United States. At war’s end, the Nisei facilitated local surrenders of Japanese forces as well as the occupation. Working in military government, war crimes trials, censorship, and counterintelligence, the MIS Nisei contributed to the occupation’s ultimate success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and thorough
"Nisei Linguists" is well documented and thorough in bringing to the public's eye the patriotism exhibited by Nisei during and immediately after WWII.There were some startling facts in it, such as several Nisei were as part of the US Army MIS and serving as linguists were amongst the Marines at Iwo Jima. This book also provided much more information than my dad (91) recalls as he was also part of the MIS but only during the Occupation of Japan.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well told story long overdue
Nisei Linguists by James C. McNaughton is a story that is long overdue in telling. While many books have been written about the two Japanese American combat regimental teams who fought so well in Europe, their Pacific counterparts have only received very small portion of coverage by comparison. This book moves to correct that and it does an excellent job in portraying how the Nisei linguists who not only served the United States but all other allied nations who fought against Imperial Japan.

The book traced the beginning of the Nisei based Military Intelligence Service and its language schools it founded. Of course along the way, they had to fight against many racial prejudices that limited their promotions, limited their duty assignments and often disregarded initially due to their appearances. It is amazing to note that so contrary to the classical stereotype, many Japanese Americans had no working knowledge of the Japanese language, much as many German Americans for example, had no working knowledge of German language. But those who did laid the foundation that will go a long way in winning the war in the Pacific.

It is no doubt by what is written in this book that these Nisei linguists aided in helping the war against Japan. Without them, many white combat troops who came home at the end of the war from the Pacific, may not have made it back in one piece. Author is pretty sure that these Nisei linguists helped gain intelligence information that saved the lives of many white combat troops, helped shorten the war and made the occupation of Japan more easier for the Americans. In reflection, they also saved lives of many Japanese soldiers and civilians who may otherwise, killed themselves either in despair or avoiding capture. That theses Nisei linguists performed their duties under racial tension of war time period against Japanese Americans make them more unique in retrospect.

This book should interest anyone who have an interest in the Pacific War and the Japanese American experience of that war. There is no doubt that these Nisei did played a major factor in winning the Pacific War although their story remains mostly untold until now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nisei Linguists
This was great reading for me because it discussed how my brother received his Silver Stars.I knew about one of them, but didn't realize he actually received two.I also found it interesting how some of the men that served under him won their Distinguished Service Metal, Silver Stars, and Bronze Stars. The book also described the various campaigns and the dates.I never really understood the campaigns and the various breakdown of where the MIS served.I also bought books for my sisters, son, and daughter so they could read about his heroism.Always have been very proud of him! ... Excerpt: Fidel "Eddie" Valdez Ramos (born March 18, 1928), popularly known as FVR, was the 12th President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998. During his six years in office, Ramos was widely credited and admired by many for revitalizing and renewing international confidence in the Philippine economy. Prior to his election as president, Ramos served in the Cabinet of President Corazon Aquino first as chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and, later on, as Secretary of National Defense from 1986 to 1991. During the historic 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, Ramos, along with then Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile, was hailed as a hero by many Filipinos for his decision to breakaway from the administration of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos and pledge allegiance and loyalty to the newly-established revolutionary government of President Aquino, following the downfall of Marcos from power in February 1986. Previously, he was the AFP vice chief-of-staff under President Marcos. Under Ramos' leadership, the Philippines experienced a period of political stability and rapid economic growth and expansion, as a result of his policies and programs designed to foster national reconciliation and unity. Ramos was able to secure major peace agreements with Muslim separatists, communist insurgents and military rebels, which renewed investor confidence in the Philippine economy. Ramos also aggressively pushed for the deregulation of the nation's major industries and the privatization of bad government assets. As a result of his hands-on approach to the economy, the Philippines was dubbed by various international magazines and observers as Asia's Next Economic...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=378466 ... Product Description
The Kooskia Internment Camp, a unique, virtually forgotten, World War II detention and road building facility, was located on wild and scenic Lochsa River in north central Idaho. Between mid-1943 and mid-1945 the Kooskia camp held an all-male contingent of some 265 so-called "enemy aliens" of Japanese ancestry. Two alien internee doctors, an Italian and later a German, provided medical services; 25 Caucasian employees included several women; and a Japanese American man censored the mail.

Despite having committed no crimes, but suspected of potential sabotage, these noncitizen U.S. residents of Japanese descent had been interned elsewhere in the U.S. following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. They volunteeredd for transfer to the Kooskia Internment Camp and received wages for helping construct the Lewis-Clark Highway, now Highway 12. Knowledge of their rights under the 1929 Geneva Convention empowered teh Kooskia internees to successfully challenge administrative mistreatment, thereby regaining much of the self-respect they had lost by being so unjustly interned. Here, finally, is their story. ... Read more
