Product Description
This commemorative edition of Amish Acres: Stamps of Approval is being published to coincide with The United States Postal Service First Day of Issue Ceremony for the “Amish Quilts” commemorative stamps to be held at noon, August 9, 2001 on the Joseph Stein Stage of the Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana. The theatre is the National Home of “Plain and Fancy,” the 1955 Broadway musical about Amish life and love, celebrating its 15th season at the historic farm. The stamps celebrate the contributions of Amish quilters over the last two centuries across America to their distinctive and practical art form.

Frank Ramirez and Richard Pletcher have collaborated to create this history of Amish Acres and the development of the Round Barn Theatre into one of the nation’s busiest regional musical theatres. The book is divided into two sections. The first covers the history of the acquisition, preservation and restoration of the Stahly-Nissley-Kuhns farmstead into Amish Acres heritage resort. It has subsequently become the only Old-Order Amish farm listed on The National Register of Historic Places. The second section, “This Wooden O,” follows Ramirez’s insight into each theatrical production that has taken the stage of the Round Barn Theatre over the last decade and a half. He explores each musical for its message as it fits within the Golden Era of musical theatre in America, then critiques the individual merits of each show’s artistic, performance and technical team. Together they create patterns of human life, love and interaction among those of different backgrounds enriching our capacity to appreciate and tolerate others who differ from our own cultural backgrounds. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good but smelly
The book was in great condition and was exactly how they described it.Can't believe they only wanted a penny for it!The only thing was the first time I had to sit down and read it for a long period of time I started to smell something and when I pulled the book closer to my nose, I realized that it was the book that smelled like cigarette smoke.I gag almost everytime I open it, but spraying it with body spray seems to be helping =)

5-0 out of 5 stars True story of an Irish girl raised Amish
First written in 1940, this book tells the story of the author's mother, an Irish girl who was orphaned as a newborn and raised by an Amish neighbor after her father and older siblings move away.Rosanna grows up to be Amish in everyway, and over the years, she does get a chance to see her Catholic siblings from time to time and the difference in their lives.

I enjoyed the character Rosanna and reading about her life. Her characterization, and that of other characters was good, but not outstanding. What makes this book so enjoyable is how naturally the author brings you into the Amish lifestyle. We learn about dress, selection of ministers, the bann, courtship, worship services, etc and very much feel like we're part of the scene. There are some differences compared to the Amish of today (and between different groups), in the exact specifics of dress, most using generators and having bathrooms today, etc, but the fundamentals of the group and their basic principles are the same.

To anyone who is fascinated by the Amish or enjoys reading other Amish books, I would definitely recommend this one. This book has the advantage of being written by one who grew up in the community. It conveys the lifestyle very well and is an enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Story is so good I read it twice!
I read this book almost thirty years ago, and read it again this year.My memories of a great story about the Amish were completely confirmed on the second reading.Joseph Yoder tells a very sensitive and caring story about his mother, Rosanna, and the family and Amish community in which he grew up.The reader must accept that the book was first published many decades ago and therefore was written to different standards than today's family stories.I credit the author with refraining from judgement when it comes to doctrinal differences among various Amish and Mennonite groups. The fact that he left the Old Order church of his childhood for a less conservative church, yet was still fully accepted in the community of his youth speaks for the respect he retained in the Old Order group. If you are looking for a completely family friendly story with great information on the Old Order Amish of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, you will not find a more enjoyable read.Rosanna's Boys

4-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book!!!!
I thought this was one of the most interesting books I've read all school year. I've always wondered about the amish society, but until I finished this book this afternoon, I didn't have any clue as to what the amish believed.
Joseph Yoder makes it possible for people like me to really enjoy a school book.
I really think that if you have any questions about the amish to go straight to this book and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on the Amish lifestyle!!!
While this book may not be for everybody, and it might not include all the aspects that a reader might expect - kind of a one stop shopping to tell everything that is necessary to understand this sect - it nevertheless tells you what the Amish are really like and why they wear the unusual clothes they do, as well as preach against the "worldly wisdom."You get to follow Rosanna through her childhood, youth, courtship, and marriage, and child-rearing.Not only that, you see how her Amish life will differ from that of her Catholic friends, especially when they visit from their Philadelphia home.

While this is not a modern day presentation, it is really useful as a historical piece.Just don't get bogged down by expecting a thorough intellectual examination of the Amish. The book is not intended for that.It is written as a honest, sympathetic and straightforward reflection of these folks from a religious, social, and economic snapshot. The traditions of the Amish are celebrated, and it's done very nicely.Recommended!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars History of the Amish
This book answered many of my questions about the origin and lives of the Amish people. I would like to read more accounts of this wonderful group of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Minority Group
A HISTORY OF THE AMISH will absorb you into the Amish world. You will learn how they began in 1693, deal with their divisions/splits, and discover their current problems. It's a history book that is an easy read, but not light on both the negative and positive facts. You'll feel like an expert--though far from it--after your read. You will come to appreciate the uniqueness of this semi-separatist clan/sect.

This subculture is also an interesting study in social studies class--either by the whole class or as an individual or group project, and there's so much realia available. An emotional read-aloud for the intermediate grades is PLAIN GIRL, which deals with the contrasting issues between being a dedicated Amish and "English" (non-Amish).

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent service
I ordered this book for a friend so cannot comment on the contents. But the service was excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowlege...Good
A well written book on the history of the Amish. From their beginings in Europe to the present day. Tons of information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frozen in time
Nolt does an excellent job of opening up the early beginnings of the Amish to their present day frozen in time establishment. He follows many unique families as they struggle for survival, and a home.My only wish would be is additional focus on doctrines and beliefs; and the problems that are created.I realize though, that that was not the objective of the book. There is a large bibliography, end-notes, and it is fully illustrated.

We begin in 17th century Europe with the founder, a man named Jakob Ammann.Knowledge on Ammann is obscure. After struggles with doctrines, the Amish, along with the Mennonites branched off from the Anabaptists. After this schism occurred over doctrines, many petty, the Amish found themselves looking for a new homestead. They spread over Europe; many were persecuted, some left freely from Switzerland and eventually found themselves settling in Pennsylvania.

Small settlements can be found all over the eastern half of the United States to this day.It is a testament to their resolve that they survived at all.In time, decreased numbers would force mergers. They still live on the "edges of American society" with their close knit structure. The encroaching world continues to challenge their Christian faith.Though, through all this they are still growing and expanding.

My thoughts, well, I think they are an example for all: their faith in the inerrancy of the Bible, moderation, love, kindness, and forgiveness. But, they have allowed old customs to stand in the way of growth. They have taken certain scripture as literal when it is meant to be taken figuratively.Where does it say that we should live in the 17th century?Sharing of their faith is greatly needed in this broken world, but they choose to isolate themselves.
Blessings
Scott

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This is one of the early masterworks of apologetics. Most apologetics works of the 20th century are written to show the external evidence for the Bible -- things like Scrolls, and Papirii, etc. Jenyns' work from the late 18th century is written to show the internal evidence -- appealing only to the character of the Scripture what it says about itself and the world around us.

The story goes that Patrick Henry had written his own apologetics work, but upon seeing this one, had his destroyed, and gave a large sum to have it distributed in the colonies.
