Product Description
Few conditions upon first diagnosis strike such terror into victims and relatives as Alzheimer's disease. The dementia that is its best-known symptom can provoke feelings of helplessness and despair, coupled with fear that the patient will inevitably suffer loss of dignity and self-respect. For over 30 years, the author has practised a communication-based form of care. She shows how, by following a few straightforward and simple ideas, the quality of life for Alzheimer's sufferers can be dramatically improved, and their dignity and self-respect renewed. Habilitation capitalizes on the remaining emotions and skills of the patient and offers chances to feel successful by reaching past the recognized losses, ignoring the failures and rejoicing in whatever still defines the essential humanity of the sufferer. Perhaps as importantly, it also suggests ways that the carers can care for themselves. This text provides a practical guide to coping with a cruel disease. It offers information, understanding and advice, but above all it offers a message of hope based on respect, common sense and quiet dignity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work in the real world of Alzheimer's Disease
I sent this book back, it could encourage unproductive activity situations. Although there are some good activities mentioned in this book, most of the activities outlined either simply don't work or are, at worst, counter productive for Alzheimer's persons. The author, who appears to lack knowledge of dementia and activities (she is a nurse not a RT) should become acquainted with Reisberg's 7 Stages of Alzheimer's or Johnson and Johnson's Alzheimer's as a 'trip back in time' article (American J. of Alzheimer's Disease, April, 2000). Just because a person works at a facility which cares for demented persons does not mean she knows what she is talking about. I wonder if this person has a degree in Gerontological Nursing or Gerontology? This author ill-advises readers to use activities that aid in "reality orientation" or "24 hour reality orientation" for a person with dementia. That idea is so dated and counter-productive it is ridiculous. The requirement for 24 hour reality orientation in nursing facilities is currently being either changed or questioned by most gerontologists. For example, the trend is for changes in the 24 hour RO requirement written into the policy and procedures for dedicated dementia wings or for nursing facilies (since they are running over 60 percent dementia),where the Activity Director validates the Alzheimer's person's delusions. Why? Because RO simply doesn't work or delievers a bad message for most demented persons. Unlike depression or delirium, demented persons have lost their abilities to think, remember and reason. So instead person-centered activities are the trend, where the activity accomopanies the AD person on his or her "trip back in time" instead of imposing your reality on the different reality of the AD person. When the Alzheimer's person has time-traveled back to age 20 or 30 and she is told she has grandchildren or an 80 year old husband, the only result of this correction will be either an argument or a message to the AD person that she is dumb! In summary, reality orientation does not work for dementia persons and should be restricted to depressed or mildly confused elders only. RO was originally used for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome men in Alabama and then became a national requirement for all nursing homes. But nursing homes house mainly demented persons now. So this outdated procedure is counter productive for demented persons. Activities focused on person-centered care are the current trend. Person-centered activities do mostly the opposite of what is suggested in this really bad book. Person-centered activities use validation instead of reality orientation and are matched with the 7 stages/sub-stages of AD persons in sink with the person's "trip back in time."

Product Description

Therapist Abraham shows how art can provide people with Alzheimer's disease a way to express their thoughts and emotions, when they can no longer communicate well verbally and words have lost their meaning. Abraham believes it is our moral obligation to provide elders with this tool, lest they be prematurely deemed beyond interaction. The confidence and self-esteem of elders—and that of the people who love them —can be bolstered by art therapy. And this is the first work demonstrating that art is not just busy work for those with Alzheimer's, but a profound and symbolic method allowing them to communicate. This work includes more than 70 drawings and paintings by people with Alzheimer's, and case histories of the men and women who created the artworks.

Art activities, with a significant therapeutic relationship, can especially increase quality of life for people with Alzheimer's, particularly during the seven-year relatively stable period of the illness. Psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and health care workers will also find this work especially valuable and insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows such insight and compassion
This book helped me in so many ways to be kinder to my mother who had Alzheimers, and pointed me to what remained and away from what was lost.It helped me to understand her torment and so to find ways to comfort her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book...Complete guide to Art Therapy and Alzheimer's
While writing my senior thesis on art therapy and Alzheimer's I was only able to find one book that embodied the subject as a whole. This book includes all the information that one could need on the subject and was written to inform and engage the reader in a way that is compelling and thoughtful. The stories of different Alzheimer's sufferers journeys in art therapy and the accompanying images gives a real life look on the positive affects of art therapy and gives the reader a compassionate view on the subject.I highly recommend this book for anyone who is studying Alzheimer's or knows someone with the disease and would like to learn more about how they can help that person by improving their quality of life through art therapy.Overall the book is written very well in an easy to read way that keeps the reader engaged, while at the same time being very informative and thorough.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the nitty-gritty day-to-day information you need.
There is a glut of books on the market about Alzheimer's.I've seen nothing like this book which offers so many suggestions to how to do your day-to-day tasks, how to do them at what point in the Alzheimer's, as your patient is always changing and needing help in ever-changing ways. This is the must-have book if you will be the caretaker throughout the life of an Alzheimer's patient. It offers love to you and to your patient; how to get the proper rest that you, too, need.It really is the one book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's Care with Dignity
This is a compelling story for all caregivers to read. The author, Frank Fuerst, recounts his journey as a caregiver for his wife June for a total of 17 years, from diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's.It is truly a story of love and perseverance.Frank breaks his caregiving into 4 phases, not in terms of medical stages, but from his perspective as caregiver. His 4 cornerstones of survival are key for any caregiver!Throughout the book, he shares what to expect, lessons learned, helpful products, and how he changed as a result of his years caring for June. Frank focuses on the practical, the emotional and the spiritual. His introspective style will help any struggling caregiver deal with their challenges in a positive, take-action way.
It's definitely a book I'll be recommending to others. In fact, I am using the book in my upcoming presentation ("Caring for the Caregiver"), to a group of Stephen Ministers,

4-0 out of 5 stars Care and Dignity
This book touched my heart!Though I don't have a loved one with AD, I can only imagine the intense strain it put on the author. Only with a love as strong as his for his wife, could he last the 17 years they both lived with the disease.I have purchased several copies and have shared a copy with a day-care facility here in St. Louis. They are developing a library and have added this book to it.Bravo Frank Fuerst, June would be VERY proud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for anyone taking care of a terminally ill patient at home
My Mother has terminal Cancer and my Father is taking care of her at home. This book has been been a great guide and reference for her care.My Mother does not have Alzheimers but my Father and our family are encountering all the care issues that a family must address when caring for aterminally ill family member at home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very specific help for the caregivers
This book has seemingly all the information that you need to be a successful caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer's.It is written in a very direct style. It addresses very specific solutions to the problems that occur as the various stages of the disease progress.I took care of my mother before I read this book and I could have used the advice here. I would not have had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. The book acknowledges, but does not dwell on the emotional difficulties a caregiver faces, but since it offers concrete solutions to all kinds of problems, using it as a reference can make the care giving experience that much easier.Keep this one on the shelf, you'll refer to it often.

Product Description
This groundbreaking work rests on the belief that Alzheimer's is one of several types of dementia and in most cases is avoidable. Rather than being the inevitable result of aging, Mendelson asserts dementia is primarily the result of bad diet, stress, lack of mental and physical exercise, and other lifestyle choices. He offers hope to both patients and their caregivers by recommending vitamins and more that may mitigate or delay the effects of dementia, as well as suggesting lifestyle changes that might help a person avoid dementia altogether. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mendelson Guides Those of Us with Cognitive Challenges
As a person with early-onset cognitive challenges I so appreciated Dr. Mendelson's approach. He has guided me through a maze of conflicting information. I recommend this book for the most current information on nutraceuticals and vitamins that may be helpful to improve quality of life for those of us with Alzheimer's in our families. I also heard him on Public Radio and I was glad that he values the neuro-protective prescription Selegiline.Beyond Alzheimer's: How to Avoid the Modern Epidemic of Dementia

5-0 out of 5 stars A choice pick for health collections focusing on senior issues
Is dementia the result of aging, or something more? "Beyond Alzheimer's: How to Avoid the Modern Epidemic of Dementia" is a discussion of the causes of dementia and what leads to it as many Americans enter into their twilight years. Poor conditioning throughout life, Scott D. Mendelson argues, is a root cause to dementia later in life. Discusses the brain and how it matures through life and can be left to wither without the right care, he provides an intriguing read for those who want to keep their body and mind healthy no matter what their age. "Beyond Alzheimer's" is a choice pick for health collections focusing on senior issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid the Modern Epidemic of Dementia
Highly recommended for anyone interested in A) the definitions for Alzheimer's, Dementia and related issues, B) the causes of Dementia, and C) the many ways to help prevent and treat dementia. Great for both caregivers and those touched by dementia, as well as the layperson simply interested in enlightening him/herself about the realities of this crippling problem that is becoming more and more prevalent across the globe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and very informative
I am a Social Worker assisting clients and families affected by dementia.I must say, Beyond Alzheimer's is the best book I have read on this topic.Dr. Mendelson's writing style keeps both the layman and professional in mind. The book provides easy to understand descriptions of the physiology of the brain as we age, causes of dementia, and preventative strategies - including well studied alternative approaches.Beyond Alzheimer's is very well researched, citing the most current data available. It is on the top of my list to recommend to both colleagues and clients.

Product Description

The confusion, losses, and devastation of Alzheimer's disease are familiar to the millions of Americans suffering from the disease and to their family members. Understandably, declining abilities and changing personal characteristics shape our picture of the disease, leading some to refer to the "double death" of Alzheimer's in which the sufferer drifts away long before his or her eventual physical end.

This small, tender volume of 85 photographs and accompanying discussion powerfully shows the limitations of this view. Cathy Stein Greenblat, an internationally respected sociologist and photographer, demonstrates in Alive with Alzheimer's that, while the ravages of the disease are real, Alzheimer's sufferers can do more than survive, they can thrive. Her images, interviews, and observations attest to the possibility of their being "alive" with Alzheimer's far beyond the expectations of the general public and even of many physicians with long experience with the disease.

Greenblat offers a new vision, taking us into a world of life-enhancing institutional care. Nursing homes and similar facilities don't have to be a last resort; as Greenblat shows, with a dedicated and experienced staff and an enriched environment (that includes respect, choices, pets, and music), extraordinary changes can be effected in Alzheimer's patients. Alive with Alzheimer's, the first photographic book on the disease, offers hope and inspiration. Moreover, its vivid, impressive evidence that ongoing stimulation in a good institutional setting can sustain Alzheimer's patients at a far higher level than is generally believed has significant implications for personal and policy decisions.

The new standard of care chronicled in Alive with Alzheimer's will provide hope and inspiration to those touched by the disease. As Dr. Enid Rockwell writes in her Afterword to Greenblat's moving book, "These photographs are extraordinary for practitioners, for family members, for everyone to see what's going on with these people. The stimulation pictured in this book is more powerful than any medication that we will have in our lifetime. . . . They so vividly show us that there are people inside these bodies, people with personalities, who experience emotion, and they show that there is life after Alzheimer's."

5-0 out of 5 stars I am very moved by this book
My mother is one of the patients featured in this book, which gave me more understanding, insight (as well as compassion) for what she and others are going through and the sort of enlightened care that Pomerado and its staff are providing. Besides the words, which have the gift of simplicity yet communicate the essence of Alzheimers, the photographs are marvelous and serve to transport you to that person and place that they are in as well as to teach you about the person being photographed with few if any words.

This book is a gift as are all the people featured in it.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars moving and helpful book
Alive With Alzheimer's is a moving pictorial portrayal of the lives of individuals with Alzheimer's who are living in an innovative residential setting in which the emphasis is on living rather than dying. The pictures do a wonderful job of showing the essential humanity of the victims of the illness, even those in the advanced stages. The text is insightful as well-- I read the book cover to cover twice and found it very uplifting.Definitely worthwhile, especially for those who have loved ones with dementia.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your view of Alzheimer's
I read this book this week and was impressed with how well it captured the spirit of the residents and staff at Silverado. My father has lived there for about a year--my mother did too until her death in February--and the place is truly amazing.Just like the book describes, I have had many chances to sit and talk with residents who didn't at first seem able to carry on a conversation. But with patience and love, you can find a way to enther their world. With the recent death of President Reagan, people should use this book as an opportunity to see what the world of Alzheimer's is like. When I come to Silverado, it is not with the dread so many people feel when visiting a nursing home.Instead, I come into a place filled with love and always have occasion to share a laugh, dance with a resident, or sit and enjoy an ice cream with my father. It is a wonderful place, as the book makes so clear in both pictures and text, and I hope it will encourage other facilities to change their way of dealing with residents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alive With Alzheimer's
This book was fantastic! It really captured life (real life) with this disease. In fact, it made me feel as though I knew the residents and was appreciating their quality of life along with them.I suppose working in the same setting encourages those thoughts. And, for those who have or are taking care of a loved one now, I imagine they also will be able to relate.

I, as a program director of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, was encouraged to do better at my work, your book was refreshing.I got some ideas and was reminded the importance music has with this disease.

My sister, who has very little knowledge or interaction with people having this disease, read through the book and was touched.

The pictures really did say it all.I liked that you had a number of sequence pictures.I think the book shows the genuine reality of Silverado. The residents are happy, they are excited about life and engaged. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly conceived and constructed book
Witnessing my mother?s abilities and personality whither away from Alzheimer?s has been difficult. Comfort and advice from friends, family and the medical community has helped, and so has reading Brenda Avadian?s brilliantly conceived and constructed book, Finding the Joy in Alzheimer?s. Discovering what others have experienced and learned in similar circumstances-?particularly the heartfelt reflections of joy?-has enabled me to see my mother and her disease in a new, brighter light. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well, it's about time
I was so thrilled to see a collection of experiences from other people, similar to mine.My Dad suffered from Alzheimers and I felt like a freak for having reflected on the illness with a smile. For me, this horrific disease showed me a man that I never knew growing up.All of his barriers were broken down and I got to know, not only who my Dad was, but who I was.I have such a joy from knowing this that it is hard for me to be bitter about that which stole my father, for at the same time, it allowed me to know the father I never knew before.

It is stories like this that the author has compiled here. Many humorous, many touching, all showing a connection where many think none could be found.Yes, there is a time when the people we know and love so dearly are robbed from us by this devastating disease, but through the process there are many joyous times to be had.

Read this book and you'll understand

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfamiliar Territory
I'm an older (born 12/12/1952) Internet user, so--in spite of all of those reassuring, little, gold padlocks shown at the bottom of ordering pages at online stores--I still wasn't ready to put my main credit card or checking account information out in Cyberspace. So, I came up with a doable solution, creating an account for just this very purpose.

If purchasing this book wasn't actually my FIRST venture into the unfamiliar territory of online shopping (and I'm almost 100% sure that it was), it came pretty close.

Venturing out into this unfamiliar territory has had more positives than negatives for me--but there's that unfamiliar territory that is among the worst nightmares of both patients and caregivers:dealing with Alzheimer's Disease.

I had been reading the online letters that Debbie Center had been writing to a mother who would never again have the comprehension to read them--so, these letters were more for Debbie than her mother. And more for helping others who might read those letters to cope should something like this happen in their families.

One day, in an IM conversation, Debbie shared her sadness with me that her mother was rapidly going downhill, and she felt helpless to stop it from happening--yet, she also had the great news that she would have a part in this book.

And that's the thread running through this book:the moments of joy found within the Alzheimer's experience.

The people who have contributed to this book are people who mourn the slipping away of those people--generally, parents and spouses--who were once so vibrant and alert.

Yet, these same people have learned to find joy and comfort in some of the simple things of life, such as unexpected smiles, words, and laughter from their loved ones.

In one case, a family--who had gotten out of contact due to distance and schedules--began a tradition of having annual family reunions due to wanting to get everybody together while the matriarch of the family could still recognize and enjoy them.

Open this book and share the lives of those in this difficult and unfamiliar territory--and share those special moments of joy that make it all worthwhile!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with touches of wry humor
Finding The Joy In Alzheimer's: Caregivers Share The Joyful Times by Brenda Avadian is a comforting, spiritually healing book filled with touches of wry humor and a serious understanding of the difficulties of Alzheimer's, and how important it is to find and treasure wondrous moments when caring for someone afflicted with this debilitating neurological disease. Finding The Joy In Alzheimer's is not intended to be a source of advice about the legal, physical, or medical difficulties of Alzheimer's disease; rather it was written to bolster the souls and spirits of those charged with caregiving responsibilities for loved ones suffering from the ravages of Alzheimers. As such, it emphatically succeeds in its mission and intention.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Many Joys...They are countless!
(...) The stories and poems are so sweet and heartwarming. When you get so deeply involved in this disease, you tend to become isolated; you think you are the only one who is going through this. Ms. Avadian's selection of stories gives the reader a lighthearted look into the trials and tribulations of caregiving, all the while letting the readers see what they are experiencing is no different from what they are reading. From the poem "CareGiver," to the stories of "I've got rocks in my head," or "Do you take...in sickness and in health...I do," or "Ice cream never tasted so good," and yes even "Family of Friends," the reader immediately feels love and support. With all the technical/clinical books that are available on Alzheimer's, it is absolutely refreshingly wonderful to have humor to help heal the caregiver's heart! ... Read more

Product Description
One in ten people over 65, and nearly half of those over 85, have Alzheimer's disease. Today we simply accept the idea that old people lose their minds as a matter of course. But this is a new phenomenon: up until about a hundred years ago, old age was associated with wisdom, not memory-loss, and dementia was known - if at all - as a side-effect of syphilis. Alzheimer's seems to have appeared out of nowhere in the early years of the twentieth century, and now at least 15 million people worldwide are its victims. It's a horrible disease which robs people of their identity before it robs them of life. It is incurable and fatal. Dying for a Hamburger presents startling evidence that Alzheimer's is one of a family of diseases caused by a malformed protein - or prion - that also causes 'mad cow' disease and its human equivalent, Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (CJD). Could Alzheimer's, like CJD, be caused by tainted beef? In this compelling exposition, the authors come to a frightening conclusion about our seemingly insatiable hunger for hamburgers. ...
