1-0 out of 5 stars "Presents Alzheimer's as it really is" -- NOT!
Author claims to present Alzheimer's "as it really is," but instead offers a book filled with questionable, disputed, or even debunked findings (e.g. "fingerprint patterns are significantly predictive of Alzheimer's disease years before its onset") passed off as facts. Watch out for the 50 "revealing facts" listed in the first chapter; many of them are not facts at all. Fact #5 in his list is: "Alzheimer's can be prevented." If that's true, you won't learn how in this book. He also misrepresents possible correlations as proven "causes." For example, there's some evidence that educational level and brain size correlate inversely with Alzheimer's. But that's not how he presents it. In his words: "Interestingly, higher educational levels and increased brain size delay the onset of Alzheimer's." And then there's the claim that "near-miraculous strides in treatment enable doctors to retard the progression of Alzheimer's, slowing even advanced cases." The book is filled with WILD overstatements. Apart from that, there is some reasonable information about the progression of the disease, what's going on with plaques and tangles, stuff like that. The back cover says that the author "has entered the field of research" after 40 years of private practice. I'm not sure what kind of "research" he's doing, but all I can say is that if he ever came up with any evidence to back up his claims he'd win the Nobel Prize.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for the caregiver.
The book is loaded with useful information in an exceptionally thoroughand well organized manner.

3-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATION,CONSIDERATON, AND EDUCATON
THIS BOOK PRESENTS RESEARCH AND POSSIBLEINTERVENTONS IN EASY TO UNDERSTAND LANGUAUGE.I FOUND IT TO BE INTERESTING READING, BEACUSE I AM A CAREGIVER TO MY MOTHER WHO HAS THIS DISEASE. THIS BOOK IS NOT THEDEFINITIVE ANSWER TO THE DISEASE, BUT IT DOES CONTAIN"INTERESTING" INFORMATION TO CONSIDER FOR MYSELF AS WELL AS MYMOTHER.AT THIS TIME THERE IS NO CURE, AND ONLY THROUGH RESEARCH WILLTHERE BE ONE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
Please be careful.Alzheimer Disease is a devistating disease and it is not fair to offer families false hope. There are so many things we have learned over the years to help make this disease easier to understand, however, to steer individuals this way is wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very very helpful book!
This book had lots of good ideas for people suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. It dovetailed perfectly with another book I was given, "Creating Moments of Joy." Both books helped me create special little moments for my dad who has now passed away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Ideas
"What kind of activities are there for the Alzheimer's patient?" is a question that comes up often. I always recommend this book. Carmel describes all kind of activities: music, exercise, food preparation, crafts, gardening, solo activities, family games, and reminiscence. I especially like the chapter on reminiscence--with the life collage, memory book, memory box, and more. Activities are very important, as is explained in this book's introdution: "The more involved patients remain with the world around them, the more resourceful they become at finding ways to keep that world for slipping away."

5-0 out of 5 stars A goldmine of activity ideas
Thanks tothis book, I have found dozens of creative ways to keep my mother (who is in the middle stages of Alzheimer's) involved and free from boredom. The activity ideas we found in this wonderful little book have improved my mother's quality of life tremendously and havemade caring forher a lot easier and more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an exceptionally helpful book
This excellent book provides dozens of ideas for keeping the person with Alzheimer's involved and stimulated. The focus is on using activities such as music, exercise and reminiscing to enhance quality of life. Family andprofessional caregivers can use these activities and many of the ideasoutlined truly work wonders. This is undoubtedly the most useful bookavailable on using activities with people with Alzheimer's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Answers for Every Caregiver of an Alzheimer's patient
My copy of this book is threadbare. I took care of my Mom with Alzheimer's until she passed away 3 years ago. A single day with an Alzheimer's patient is filled with questions, all day long. You feel as though you're losing your mind with all the odd behaviors, forgotten memories and constant repetitions. When you read this book, it suddenly makes sense. It helps the Caregiver understand that it isn't their fault, that they are doing enough, that they shouldn't feel guilty and it is all right to live normally, despite the sorrow of the patient.

A fantastic book! Perfect for the Caregiver and family members. It brings understanding of such a sad disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caregivers Bible
This book is fantastic. A must have for all caregivers caring for loved ones with dementia. It has been called the caregivers bible. I wish I had bought the book earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful
I think everyone who has a family member with Dementia should be required to read this book. My mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers and this has helped me to understand what she is going through. I've completed the book, but still turn back to parts as it serves as a handbook. It's almost like a mini-support group. It was recommended to me by a friend who's mom went through what my mom is going through now-and together we understand better the trials and tribulations of such a cruel disease, but also know how to make the best of the situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 36 hour day
Undoubtedly one of the most user friendly books about dementia and alzheimer's disease being published. It has been around for a number of editions and just keeps on being more informative. Taking care of a dementia or alzheimer's individual can be a very taxing job. If you are not working and do the caregiving full time is one thing but if you work full time and have to come home to someone in need of assistance it can be totally overwhelming. This book gives you information, ideas and support during this period for not only your life but the one you are taking care of. You can't do it all on your own and The 36 Hour Day helps you not only realize this but gives you basic information, addresses and organizations to help you and your loved one cope.I used this book while taking care of my mother for four years and have now had to purchase the new 4th edition for my life partner who has been diagnosised with this emotionally charged disease. If you buy no other book on the subject, please believe me when I say that this is the one book you will find most helpful. And, remember take time for yourself - it's the most important thing you can do for yourself. The alzheimer's patient has been set free - it's your responsibility to realize this and look towards the your own future without feeling guilty.

Product Description

"The book is a message of hope and reassurance for laymen, especially aging members of the baby-boom generation alarmed by all the attention being paid to Alzheimer's and imagining worst-case scenarios for themselves."--Washington Times

EXCITING NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF MEMORY LOSS

A world-renowned neurologist presents the first groundbreaking memory-loss protection plan

Millions of aging Americans are afraid of losing their most precious possessiontheir memory. They are desperate for anything that will help them to regain it. Now, for the first time, The Memory Cure shares the absolute latest that science has to offer in the form of a protection plan. Dr. Majid Fotuhi, one of the world's foremost experts in the field of Alzheimer's Disease and brain function, outlines an exciting and highly effective plan that targets each of the 13 risk factors contributing to the development of memory loss.

Drawing from cutting-edge, longitudinal studies from all over the globe that have followed tens of thousands of subjects from middle life into older age, Dr. Fotuhi deciphers the patterns that are repeatedly revealed. These include the fact that lifestyle affects the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's Disease, as well as the severity of normal memory loss that accompanies the aging process. The results profoundly suggest that these conditions can be preventedregardless of genetic dispositionby addressing the crucial 13 risk factors.

In addition Dr. Fotuhi's protection plan also includes seven steps to protect the brain and sharpen memory for life. Filled with tests, questionnaires, and real-life profiles, The Memory Cure offers readers specific ways to reduce their risk and increase mental agility, while providing them with an accessible and comprehensive book on the workings of the aging brain. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Memory Cure review
The suggestions in the book are very good. The supplier was very prompt in shipping the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Majid Fotuhi told me.
I met Dr Fotuhi at an aging seminar. He was the keynote speaker and I gave the lunch hour presentation on another related but non-medical topic. I visited with Dr. Fotuhi during a break. I asked him about the benefit of anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen because he had discussed how brain plaque was a contributing factor for Alzheimer's. He told they had a beneficial affect. However, a daily regimen of ibuprofenwould never be recommended due to the so-called risks of stomach irritation.

He gave me a passionate account of his tests of rats involving adding blueberries to their diets. He said the results were phenomenal and that his family has a serving of blueberries with their breakfast most mornings. He recommended that I do the same.

He's a very impressive man and I suggest you see him live if you ever have the opportunity.

I'm not a doctor. This information is not medical advice. I simply wanted to recount an interesting and relevant conversation I had with the doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful
The book begins by pointing out that sometimes people and it seems even doctors mistake depression or other health problems which can be treated successful for Alzheimer's disease which may be untreatable.

He then offers a ten step plan for prevention of memory loss, which consists of proper diet, as well as daily physical and mental exercise. Some nutrients that have been found useful for better functioning of the brain are blueberries, spinach, and other fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, almonds and other nutrients rich in vitamin E, less salt in diet, as well as general nutrition that contributes to low cholesterol and normal blood pressure.High blood pressure and high cholesterol seem to be detrimental to memory. He further suggests cutting the quantity of food people consume, perhaps in half. Fasting is good.Daily physical exercise envigorates the entire body including the brain. As as the saying goes "use it or lose it", constant mental stimulation, learning new things, solving puzzles, challenging oneself intellectually in different ways through reading or even calculating totals in one's head when grocery shopping are all helpful to keep the brain active and in good shape throughout one's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will I get Alzheimer's Disease?
So many of us worry about whether we might get this disease.
Dr. Fotuhi says that of the many who fear they may get it, only a
very few will get it.

He describes our brain in a very interesting fashion. He explains how our brain stores our memories, and, what amazes me,
how the brain knows what to store. We all know what we were doing when 9/ll happened. We certainly don't remember what we
were doing on Sept. l0!

It is a fascinating read and teaches us a lot about the brain,
and how to protect ourselves from memory loss, about advances
that are being made toward a cure.

An easy book to read-not too scientific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, Very Reader Friendly
This recently released book on Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most reader friendly book I've come across in quite a while.I've seen this book first-hand, and it is impressive. It describes the complicated neurology of the brain in an easy to follow manner. Also, Dr. Fotuhi describes (in plain language) the latest AD research findings and discusses their implications. If I had to recommend only two books on Alzheimer's disease for caregivers it would be this one and, "The 36-Hour Day."In contrast to some books on AD, Dr. Fotuhi's book is optimistic. Not only does he describe how AD develops, but more importantly he discusses what people can do to reduce their individual risk factors for developing AD.I find myself constantly recommending this book to all the families of patients participating in AD research projects I coordinate. ... Product Description
Do you know your Apo E geneotype? Do you know why it's important? Researchers have discovered that the Apo E gene regulates the way your body transports fats and cholesterol, affecting not just weight but also the heart and vascular system, and influencing our patterns of inflammation--one of the key factors in many serious diseases.

The Apo E Gene Diet is not a traditional diet; instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, it supports each individual's unique genetic recipe with the correct matching nutrition. We now know that different genotypes need a different balance of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. This breakthrough book outlines the latest information so you can make appropriate nutritional decisions based on your specific Apo E genotype. In this way, you can take charge of your body's gene-supportive environment for optimum health.

The Apo E Gene Diet can be for everyone, but it is specifically designed for a new generation of patients who want to live life to the fullest instead of waiting around for their biology to catch up with them. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept but poor diet advice
I find it ironic that the author credits Dr. Atkins for his Diet Revolution book regarding low carb diets, but every single one of her macronutient percentages equate to a high carb diet. If I were to eat 50-60% of my calories from carbs, I'd be obese. Frankly, if anyone considering this book really wants to know about different metabolic types and the best diet for them, please get the Metabolic Typing book. It's fascinating for one thing and based on science including how quickly one oxidizes food and its effects on the nervous system.

Bought the book for a friend of mine ..It is every thing they expected it to be and more

5-0 out of 5 stars The APO E Gene Diet
This book goes well with the Before the Heart Attacks book. It is not another diet! Diet is really a lifestyle choice. In this book it relates to you how your particular body, or genes, would best respond to certain foods and certain exercise. After taking a simple blood test, you can refer in the book to areas that work best for you. A roadmap, if you will, of why certain other foods do not work and you cannot lose weight and do not feel you best. Excellent read and reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deepening your understanding of diet, health and well being
This book brought together many of the lifestyle changes I had been carrying out over the last few years. It makes it clear that there is not a one shot wonder diet that will heal all ills. Also that our cholesterol numbers are more complex and need to be more clearly understood before we start taking medication. It needs to be a permanent life style change and the book helps you to plan how to do thisand what to expect along the way.
I was fascinated to learn how our genetic makeup can alter how we can metabolize fat. The book then helps us to understand how to refine our diet and exercise accordingly to this.
I have worked for 20 years as a Physical Therapist in different settings and the information set out helps me gain a better understanding of the how to live in health and well being.

5-0 out of 5 stars This life changing book is aMUST read.
This life changing book goes beyond a band-aid fix to weight loss and disease prevention. The "APOE Gene Diet Book" by Pamela McDonald is a life changing book unlike too many books that use a "one size fits all".This book addresses the uniqueness of the individual using cutting edge technology, including gene testing and advanced blood testing. I am interested in strengthening my immune system, which today's health system does not address. Coming from a family line with many genetic issues, I am interested in turning off these gene expressions and thus preventing disease and reducing current health issues.

I have followed the "general" diet for the past 5 months and have had astounding results; primarily an increase in energy and a reduction in the area of inflammation and pain. I have just taken the APOE Gene Test, working with Pamela McDonald's internet program, and plan to involve my entire family in this program.

This book is not about band-aid treatments.Ms. McDonald provides food recommendations, recipes, exercise, and a variety of lifestyle changes. This book has proven itself as a comprehensive resource manual. It has given me a foundational understanding of how the individual's lifestyle, genetics, food, exercise and attitude are important to an individual's overall health. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
I found this book to be very well written, easily understood, and very informative. It is the best book on Alzheimers that I have read so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Have!
This book is a must have for caregivers or anyone who has a family member with Alzheimer's.You can read it through or just pick out chapters that will help you at the time, but the biggest help to me was Chapter 12 about Approaching Death. It gave me the comfort and help that I needed.I've read many books on the subject, but this has been the most helpful yet because it is based on love.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Has The Answers You Are Looking For....
This is the book that changed everything for me. Its about approaching this disease with Love, Strength and Courage.
Frena shows you how to get thru a day at a time and most of all how to keep yourself intact. We get lost in this disease, it consumes whole families. She shows you how to listen, your loved one is still within this person afflicted by this disease, you just have to listen carefully and you will see the person you love is still inside and has alot to tell. She shows you how to cope. Frena is my strength, she gave me the tools from reading her book 3 years ago. This book is my foundation and Frena is an angel. No other book affected me as much as this one. If you want to truly understand this disease, this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool
For anyone with a loved one suffering with Alzheimer's this is the book to get. It will help you understand the disease and how to cope. Written in everyday language it is packed with information on the stages these victims go through and how you can help them. One of the best I've read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that packs a powerful message about Love
This is a tremendous resource for people who believe in the healing power of Love. Frena Gray Davidson has written a very spiritually centered book that will inevitably help any caregiver and their loved one.

She speaks about how we'll see the "divine child" untouched by darkness or sickness - our loved one - emerge in this process. And she states that we must listen to the feeling behind the words. That little statement has changed my life. When someone asks for their mother, who may have passed on decades earlier, they're really seeking comfort and security and reassurance. We need to hear their feelings that lie in back of their words.

She goes on to say that 30% of language is verbal, the rest is expressed in body language and behavior.

Further on she makes the observation that Alzheimer's patients are sensitive to the thoughts of those around them and to always give plenty of Love, both in word, action and thought.

She states that "unconditional Love is not a measure, it is a flow. You cannot give it or get it, you can only be part of it. When you love a person with Alzheimers, clarity and awareness come to that person."[p149]

The other wonderful point she makes is that so much of our disappointment in Alzheimers patients is tied to our notion of their "proper" mortal identity. Your mother doesn't know she's your mother anymore, but you can value and cherish who she is in the here and now. Don't live in the past but nurture the childlike qualities she is expressing in the present.

Tons of good advice. The other book I'd recommend for anyone dealing with Alzheimers is "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by M. B. Eddy. It is a terrific sourcebook on powerful prayers that heal and restore. It is the "how-to" book of prayer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a very practical book
This is by far one of the most helpful books if you have someone in your life who has AD

4-0 out of 5 stars You can judge this book by its title.
I originally listened to an abridged version of this book which I found in my local library. It was so helpful that I listened to it twice, and then ordered several copies of the paperback to share with my six siblings, and with our 83-year-old mother, who has just been diagnosed.

The book was a little late for my brother and sister who live in town with Mom and are dealing with the every day issues, but it reinforced what they have done and are doing: the book could have been a case study of our family's experience, and that is a comfort. It was just in time for those of us who live far away, and whose most frequent interaction with Mom is on the phone, where she's been able to put up a good front for quite a while. And on a recent visit to see Mom, I mentioned that I had this book which gave, among other things, a very good layman's primer to the biology of the disease; her native curiosity was in place that day, and she said she'd like to read that. She still has my copy, and talks about how interesting it has been for her to read.

The book has helped to equip me for direct conversations, with Mom and with my siblings, which we needed to have.As a result, Mom has gone from a form of denial to being able to call her own sisters (across country) and tell them herself of her condition. This, along with my sister finally convincing her to stop driving and to accept household help (she lives alone), are major milestones made somewhat easier all around by our use of the book.

I also appreciate that while the book works at preparing us for a long haul with this disease, it spares us the details of the later stages; this is another example of "truth in packaging" I came to appreciate after giving the book to Mom to read.(Any details about the future she doesn't know now, she probably will not need to know!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and straight to the point
I bought this book along with 2 others, "The 36 Hour Day" and "Learning to Speak Alzheimers"I am the main caregiver for my mother-in-law and very new to being in this position.I wanted to read and discover anything that would help me be the caregiver I wanted for her and to have all the information on AD out there. I wanted to know what to expect and when to expect it as far as symptoms and odd things she would do that I didn't understand. If you are looking for a book that gives you specifics on what to look for, what to do and how to handle it, I would recommend this book and also the other 2 I purchased. These 3 books together can answer most all queations you may have about AD, what to look for at what stage and how to respond to it appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was reading everything I could find on the subject, but I wished that there was a book about the early stages.I was a long way from needing all of the end of life material I was reading.I found my answers in this book and will review it as time goes on.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for family of Dementia Patient
If you have a loved one that is showing early dementia signs, this is a must read!If you do not know and understand what you will be facing, it will be unbelievably difficult. But this book can help you understand what is happening so you do not take personally what is being said and done by your loved one. ...
