Extractions: Countryside in revolt? Well, not really. The Countryside Alliance's Liberty and Livelihood March in September was decidedly unrepresentative of the countryside. The idea promoted by the CA that most country people support hunting has been shown to be incorrect. In October 1997, a MORI poll revealed that 57% of people living in rural areas support a ban on hunting and that 61% disagree that hunting with dogs is an important part of the rural economy. As education is refashioned to support global responsibility, our shelter was challenged to provide real-life opportunities for students and the community to learn about animal welfare and encourage action affecting change. In 1995, the Regina Humane Society "Caring Hands" program was developed to provide exercise, grooming and companionship for the animals and Ahands-on" education and experience for volunteers. The Program combines animal health with volunteer encouragement and education, and community outreach. Volunteer education begins with Orientation sessions which include reading appropriate manuals, learning about the organization, its animals, goals, procedures and hands-on experience. On-the-job training provides our volunteers with the opportunity to extend their knowledge and improve their skills working directly with shelter staff and animal welfare situations. Animal care staff are included in the entire planning, implementing and evaluating process of the "Caring Hands" program. As a result, volunteers are seen as part of the team. Clicker Training Continuing education programs provide opportunities for growth as well as encourage enthusiasm for learning about animals and animal welfare in our community and beyond. The introduction of "Clicker Training" volunteer education programs, in particular, have had a major impact on our shelter. Clicker training is a technique of training dogs, cats and other animals with POSITIVE reinforcement and a marker signal - the sound of a plastic clicker. Hyperactive, unmanageable dogs, now often prance daintily into the adoption rooms and excitedly wait to sit, down, or stay for treats or pets. The volunteers can see their work paying off B dog adoptions are higher than they have ever been.

Animal welfare isn't commonly addressed in most history or civics classes. Even those of us who are immersed in the field of animal advocacy and protection have sketchy understandings of how 'animal welfare' has developed and evolved in the United States. This workshop provides an historical account of animal welfare in the U.S. and sheltering in particular, providing a context in which to measure and understand our changing views and directions for the future. Jesse Winters is the Midwest Shelter Outreach Manager for the ASPCA National Shelter Outreach Department , providing workshops and training to animal advocacy and protection organizations in 11 Midwestern states. Workshop topics include shelter sanitation and disease control, cage-free feline housing, adoption policies and customer relations, strategic planning, stress management, and ethical decision making. Based in Urbana, Illinois, she draws on 15 years experience in the field of animal care and welfare. Extractions: Undesirable consequences of intense selection for growth or egg production are being addressed by research on leg weakness and heat stress in meat-type chickens and osteoporosis in laying hens. Other projects aim to identify the behavioural needs of poultry to improve their husbandry and environmental wellbeing. Developing environmental enrichment devices to reduce inter-bird pecking Widespread public debate has stimulated the call for more animal-friendly, alternative housing systems for laying hens (e.g. aviaries, percheries, free range). Within the European Union the traditional battery cage will be banned as from 2012. However, the increased risk of feather pecking is a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of alternative housing systems. This article summarises work carried out at Roslin Institute . It is part of a larger European-wide research project co-financed by the European Commission,within the framework of RTD contract FAIR 5 - CT97 - 3576., which is reported as 'Feather pecking: solutions through understanding', H.J. Blockhuis, R.B. Jones, I.C. de Jong, L. Keeling and R. Preisinger, 2001.
