Such programs will include Spay/Neuter Awareness, Animal Abuse Investigation and Assistance and Medical Care and Behavior Seminars. As moral agents, we recognize our own obligation to treat animals humanelynot because it is their right, but because it is our responsibility. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has defined animal welfare as "a human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, human handling, and, when necessary, humane euthanasia." The animal welfare view recognizes responsible animal use as natural, ethically appropriate and indispensable to our survival and quality of life. This philosophy is based on the premise that the mutual dependence of humans and animals on one another is part of the natural order, and a function of our joint evolution. Scientists believe that the domestication of animals began about twelve thousand years ago, when wolves began to gravitate to the campfires that warmed ancient humans. Instinctively, the animals recognized that associating with humans increased their chances for survival, ultimately enhancing their ability to reproduce. Their food supply was assured, so they didn't have to compete with other predators to eat. The campfires kept them warm, reducing their own need to expend energy for that purpose. And man protected them from savage attacks from other predators.

With the ever-increasing human and pet population in our world today, it is vital to spread the important messages of the Animal Welfare Society: the importance of spaying and neutering pets, of long-term commitment to a pet, kind animal treatment, and the link between domestic violence and animal abuse. In conjunction with the York County Coalition against Domestic Violence, our shelter is working on the issues surrounding domestic violence-for both humans and pets. The Animal Welfare Society has established the PAWS program to assist clients who are in need of assistance. We go directly to the children in grades K through high school, adjusting our subject matter to each grade level. We welcome field trips from schools and community groups. Age-appropriate videos and a tour of our facility are included in a visit. As the number of area high schools that require community service grows, so does our program to include teenagers in the important work of our shelter. Students may satisfy all or part of their high school volunteer requirements with us, and we welcome the opportunity to work with the youth that want to help animals in our towns.

The school has a great deal of land which has not been developed for wildlife and has been left derelict for a number of years. Sharon Richards, Science Co-ordinator and the Head Teacher Ann Harris, approached Born Free asking for help to develop their school grounds for wildlife and the National Curriculum! Oaktree School has plenty of room for development Naturally we were delighted to be provided with the opportunity to help encourage children to investigate their own environment and improve the grounds for wildlife. The first stage of the project was to seek permission and inform the teachers, caretaker, Governors and LEA that the project was going to happen. Funding was considered and applications sent to a variety of grant making bodies. Every one at Oaktree was enthusiastic to start making a change for wildlife and the children. Before starting the exciting part of drawing up plans and construction, many observations, investigations and planning need to be undertaken and it is vital that the children are involved at every stage.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria receives hundreds of calls every week from people seeking advice about an animal behavior problem, or reporting lost and found animals. Our trained staff counsel callers on training, nutrition, health care and hundreds of topics, with the goal of helping people solve problems with training or behavior modification before they decide to give up the animal.
