Extractions: National Museum of American History Explores the Role of West Point In the Making of America Exhibition Marks the Bicentennial of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point "West Point in the Making of America, 1802-1918," a new exhibition at the Smithsonians National Museum of American History, focuses on the graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and how they changed the nation. The 3,200-square-foot exhibition will open Oct. 19 and continue through Jan. 4, 2004. "West Point in the Making of America" begins in 1802 when the Academy was established by an act of Congress and concludes in 1918, coinciding with the end of World War I. During this period, West Point furnished America with many leaders, not only for the U.S. Army, but also in science, education, engineering and many other fields. The exhibition highlights the achievements of those West Point graduates and their families, and features such military leaders as Gen. Ulysses S. Grant (Class of 1843), Gen. Robert E. Lee (Class of 1829) and Gen. John J. Pershing (Class of 1886). The exhibition also examines the U.S. Armys place in 19th and early 20th-century American history, and how West Point graduates helped build the nation s infrastructure, explore its territories and fight its wars.

Mrs. Ford teaches at the Fillmore Middle School and was selected for her excellent work at that school and in her community. Mrs. Ford will be attending a Graduate Credit History Workshop given by the Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Her tuition, round trip air transportation, accommodations, meals and other expenses will be provided by the California Society. This is the seventh year the California Society has provided this award. This honor is for recognition from the society to teachers for inspiring their students in learning about The American Revolutionary War. Three history professors from California Universities were this year's judges. It is quite possible that Mrs. Ford's efforts in the annual "Pride in America" student assembly distinguished her from the other finalists. Mrs. Ford and the Fillmore Middle School invite local dignitaries, including members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, to attend as guests and honorees. During that assembly, the Ventura County Chapter of the Sons of The American Revolution present "Spirit of America" and "Good Citizenship" Awards to students selected by the facility. Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is dependent upon having an ancestor who was a recognized patriot during the American Revolutionary War. This includes Spanish Soldiers who served under General Galvez and the Soldiers who were guarding the California Missions.

Extractions: Inevitable conflicts with the English colonies finally led to wars in which the Spanish lost the Carolinas and Georgia. Spanish conflicts with the French, who had established communities from Canada to Louisiana, were also hostile. However, when the French were defeated by the British in the French and Indian War, the French gave their former Louisiana territory to the Spanish rather than their hated English enemy. Suddenly Spain found itself in possession of New Orleans, St. Louis, and all the land in between. Spanish colonists slowly moved into the area. They held the land for nearly 50 years, along with Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. But more conflicts with the new United States of America slowly led to the loss of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida and the Napoleonic Wars finally cost Spain their Louisiana Territory. In 1803 the United States purchased the area from France.
