Author with Asperger's Disease?
This is not really a novel.It is 317 pages of endlessly detailed descriptions that prevent the development of any possible connection between reader and characters.There is no dialogue, all is narrative.There are no paragraphs, words simply run down every inch of every page like an ink spill.It reminds me of the writings of a very bright person with asperger's: he can give you a fantastic account of everything in the room, as well as everything that was in the room yesterday, 50 years ago and, quite possibly, during pre-history-- pausing midway only to tell you on which day of the week you were born.At first, you are thrilled and amazed by the exercise. But when all is said and done, you realize that you have no real sense of the people described. The experience leaves you feeling cold and empty.

it's about time this got translated
I agree with the first reviewer: this is one of the great books of the 20th century. Also an excellent translator. As for the question about the other volumes: this one only took 30 years to get translated! It's not likely to be a big hit in the English-speaking market; too Marxist, I suppose. Thanks to Duke Univ. Press for making this volume available.I have to think that if they're going to go ahead and call this volume 1, then vols. 2 & 3 must be forthcoming.

This is one of the greatest plays of the 20th Century.Read it.If you can find a DVD of the Royal Shakespeare Company production of it with Glenda Jackson as Charlotte Corday, but it.If you are a composer, make an opera out of it.It is a wonderful, terrible, terrifying piece of theater, and when Corday remarks regarding the guillotine, "They say, when the head is cut from the body...", it is one of the most frightening, wonderful stage moments in history, up there with Williams, with Brecht.Hell, with Marlowe and Shakespeare.

Different From the UK Edition
While certainly a brilliant play, I should mention that this edition differs slightly from the edition I used while in the United Kingdom.Aside from the typical spelling changes, certain words were changed slightly in meaning (Coulmier's "This is outright defeatism!" vs. "...outright pacifism!").The biggest crime, however, was a drastic reduction of the final scene.

The UK edition features an extended Epilogue, including an explanation from Sade, the "resurrection" and counter-explanation of Marat, and a giant poster of Napoleon during the parade scene.In this edition, some of the Herald's lines were given to Coulmier to apparently bridge the gap.

All of the descriptions, introductions, notes, and even inclusion of musical scores remain identical.If given a choice, I would certainly look for that edition, as it is somewhat more fulfilling.(It features a standard black & white cover with no pink trim)

THE TITLE SAYS A LOT
I found the title of Peter Weiss's play so interesting that I bought his play on an impulse.I half expected it to be unreadably pretentious, but in fact I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to see it actually performed, but I live over a thousand miles from where that might be happening.One advantage of reading the play is that the author's comments are available.

I knew very little beyond the superficial about Sade or Marat, so I was somewhat surprised to discover that Sade actually wrote plays while confined in Charenton that were performed by the inmates, and that Marat was a scientist who expressed ideas well ahead of his time.I was inspired to learn more about Marat, so I read his essay ARE WE UNDONE, in which he urges:"The cutting off of five or six hundred heads would have guaranteed your peace, liberty and happiness."In the play he justifies this savagery by insisting (p. 113):"We do not murder we kill in self-defence."(It might very well be our beloved president speaking).If Marat was made the scapegoat for the Reign of Terror, it was not without foundation.

Weiss writes that what interested him "in bringing Sade and Marat together was the conflict between an individualism carried to extreme lengths and the idea of a political and social upheaval.Speaking to Marat, Sade says (p. 131), "these cells of the inner self are worse than the deepest stone dungeon as long as they are locked all your Revolution remains only a prison mutiny to be put down by corrupted fellow-prisoners."This dovetails interestingly with Sade's comment to his wife when she complained that one could not approve of his mode of thought (p. 147): "My mode of thought is the result of my reflections, it is a part of my life, of my own nature.It is not in my power to alter it, and if it were in my power I should not do it."This brings to mind Schopenhauer's reflection that "You can do what you want, but you cannot want what you want."Thus do Sade and Marat imprison themselves within their own grubby little minds.Sade claims, in this play at least, (p.72), "In a criminal society I dug the criminal out of myself so I could understand him and so understand the times we live in."His mode of thought makes this sort of understanding improbable.

However, as with all pessimistic assertions, this is not really true.With just a moment's honest reflection it is obvious enough that most of what makes up our "nature" is purely haphazard, and our "reflections" are just an obsessive rehashing of petty grievances and sexual fantasies that that we come to mistake for our true nature.

Provocative and Mind Stimulating Material
Maybe you have seen the film Quills and it has sparked an interest in you about the Marquis de Sade. Or maybe you are a history buff and are interested in the time of the French revolution, or perhaps you just love a really good thought-provoking play. If any of those things holds your interest you are in for a really marvelous read. 'The Persecution and Assassination of Jean Paul Marat as performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under The Direction of Marquis de Sade"(by Peter Weiss) is the full title of this book, but is AKA "Marat/Sade" and various editions may be found under either title. The edition I am reviewing is the English version(original is German) by Geoffrey Skelton.

So Marat/Sade is a play within a play with definite messages concerning "Revolution" and the effects on both the masses and the leaders. The setting is a fictional one, but uses the basis of historical events and characters to tell the story. The play inside this play is written and produced by Sade and performed by the inmates of Charenton where he spent so many years imprisoned for his writing, considered socially unacceptable and outrageous. The year it is being performed is 1808 but the events surrounding the story are happening on July 13, 1793, the day Charlotte Corday stabbed Jean-Paul Marat.

It is the day of the assassination. Marat, Sade, Corday,and political activists of the time argue back and forth about the reasoning and atrocities surrounding the Revolution and the state of Terror. The points going back and forth(sometimes in song) has the inmates(the rest of the cast), being easily swayed and worked up into a state of frenzy, all the while building to the stabbing. What is morally right and wrong? Heads are rolling - literally - who are the sane ones here - are the inmates running the asylum - so to speak?Even Columier(progressive director of the institution and supporter of freedom in arts)has trouble with the play when he feels it goes to far against the establishment.

This book, first published in 1965 grasps not only the horrific events of the 18th century, it is also certainly a statement on the international events of the 1960's. It will still provoke thought and may translate to some of the atrocities going on in the world today. Author Peter Weiss, seems to have really gotten into the heads of Sade, Marat and the others giving intellectual and provocative dialogue to the players. The scenes are well set for the stage, and excellent descriptions are given for each character making it very easy to visualize the entire play.

The books includes character descriptions - even down to subtle items in the wardrobe that would distinguish their roles, author's note on the historical background of the play,the music and words to the songs, and a brief bio of Weiss. I don't speak German(the 2 semesters I took in college nearly 40 years ago is long forgotten), but I have to say I don't feel like anything was lost in the translation of this play.

I would highly recommend this play to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, politics, infamous characters, and even if you are part of an acting group looking for an interesting and provocative play, you should have a look at this one.

This is a keeper and one to be read repeated times...enjoy the read...Laurie

I first heard of this play around 30 years ago when it was performed by the upper classes of my school in England. I never forgot it and decided recently to purchase the play and to read it.
The story takes place in an insane asylum in France around the time of the French Revolution, where The Marquis de Sade was kept for a number of years. He wrote a play about the revolutionary - Jean-Paul Marat, which was performed by the inmates of the asylum.
However, the play is much more than that. It really is a commentary about about how people behave toward one another during terrible periods of time.
I think it is a remarkable play - sometimes a little horrifying - but very well worth while picking up to read. I whole heartedly recommend it. ... Read more

The work of German poet Frederich Hölderlin (1770–1843) has inspired countless poets and philosophers from Paul Celan to Rainer Maria Rilke to Martin Heidegger and Friedrich Nietzsche. EVERYONE SHOULD READ (OR SEE) THIS PLAY
I've wanted to direct Peter Weiss's The Investigation since I first read it in translation in the mid-sixties. Weiss is better known for his brilliant Marat/Sade, a reinterpretation of the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat by Charlotte Corday as staged by the marquis de Sade with the inmates of the mental asylum at Charenton.It's an awesome play.

But The Investigation in its own way is as revolutionary as Marat/Sade. More germane to my concerns, it's fairly easily adaptable to Readers' Theater. The play is presented as a series of eleven "Songs." (They aren't sung songs, but rather prose -talked--songs. It's Brecht-Talk to call them "Songs".) Each song/scene details some aspect of the atrocities committed upon the prisoners in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Most, perhaps all, of the text of the play is taken verbatim from the transcripts of the Nuremberg Trials (November 20, 1945, to October 1, 1946), which tried German war criminals. If the parts in the play were not double-cast, it would require twenty-eight actors (two of them women). The play is also too long: it would have to be shortened.

The dialogue is chilling, made even the more so by being presented in so low a key. There's almost no action: witnesses ascend and leave the witness stand, the prosecuting attorney and the defense counsel wrangle before the judge. Some functionaries who collaborated in maintaining the camp system are called as witnesses. All of them deny knowledge of what took place, even of what they could read in account books or see from the windows of their workrooms. The accused are monsters, whether on the stand testifying or simply acting the boor in their seats. The bulk of the witnesses are the former prisoners: a woman forced to work as secretary for a Nazi boss who likes to beat prisoners to death, a political partisan subjected to torture and himself beaten near to death, mothers separated from husbands and children, never to hear of them again.

It's great theater. I'm considering it for a local Readers' Theater and I think it would work: the characters can be doubled to keep the cast size in bounds, there's no set to worry about and there's enough overlap to permit cutting. That's essential, because the play is quite long at 313 pages in print but the message cannot be weakened.

I have two concerns. The first is the emotional charge the testimony delivers. It's far from cocktail theater. People may experience feelings they'd rather not feel on an afternoon or evening entertainment junket. The second is whether the play is dated now: will its moral urgency seem out of date when expended on an injustice now sixty-five years past

The absolute best and absolute worst play I've ever done.
Not meant for anyone younger than 18.But definitely a play that every single person on the planet should experience.If nothing else, it will remind you of how dangerous the world can be if we don't take care of each other, and what will happen again if we continue to turn our backs on the horrors that still go on today.
As an actor who has had the opportunity to perform a production of 'The Investigation' I offer a word of warning.This play will upset you, anger you, and destroy you.Merely reading the words on the page is bad enough, performing them - trying to re-emulate what really happened turns you inside out.As my director said - 'You'll be glad you did this, you'll be even gladder when it's over'.What is contained within the pages of this play is the human condition at it's absolute worse.You read about the ones who survived - and what they had to do in order to survive, and you read about those who were just 'following orders'.And the question you ask yourself when you are finished reading this is not 'What would I have done?', but, 'Would I have survived?'

One of the most powerful readings of my life. I'd never heard of Weiss though I knew about the holocaust. Thinking of the death of millions of jews, gypsies, communists, mentally retarded and other 'undesirables' is always hard. A Series of Cantos from the transcripts of trials of Nazis in Germany after WWII. Weiss focuseson inviduals from this mass of innocent victims producing a tale to chill the heart, make any human cry and fill up with rage at the same time. have i never been completely awake?
This book is great. Literature? I don't really think so. It's not a blog either by any means, but it IS a story. I have been eyeing this book at museum gift shops for ages now, and I finally bought it, and it REALLY is difficult to put down after you get started. Things you've thought half conciously, or conciously, and then discarded in a moment, they put in print and make you seriously consider the question.

Is hunger an emotion?
Is there a secret tunnel that leads directly to the kitchen?

Is it art or literature?
This is a very quirky little publication; it is hard to say if it is art of literature, possibly it is both, as there is a visually artistic core to it. It is certainly not to be read cover to cover but is interesting to dip into to find a thought-provoking or simply amusing question at random. It is full of such, and sometimes the writing is crossed out or inserted for interesting artistic statement. The book is beautifully and starkly presented, with two questions per page in scrawled white writing on black, shiny paper. It is a very interesting piece of art for the coffee table, though perhaps not an endlessly readable and entertaining book. Worth having, though perhaps the price isnt justified. ... Read more

A Must-Have Book For People With Chronic, Life-Style Illness
More Health, Less Care is a must-have book for anyone who is suffering from a chronic health condition such as hypertension, obesity, or diabetes, and who isn't getting better. Dr. Weiss explains why this isn't your fault and what you can do to turn things around. He blames the problem on the poor fit between traditional medical care and today's lifestyle illnesses which come from reduced physical activity, lots of time spent in front of screens, and diets high in sugar and unhealthy fats.

Under the traditionalmodel the doctor doesn't see his patient as a person or undertake a comprehensive inquiry into the patient's life to understand all the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual factors that may play a role in his illness. Rather, he spends 15 minutes with a patient, orders lab tests, identifies his "medical problem," and then attempts to fix his problem with a drug.

This approach makes the person with the illness completely passive and precludes him from playing an active and helpful role in figuring out why he's ill and what he can do to regain his health and wellbeing. Dr. Weiss advocates that people make a total commitment to their health and that they collaborate with their physician to develop a treatment plan which realistically addresses their unique issues. If you're obese because you have a very stressful job and you habitually engage in emotional over-eating to self-soothe, then being told to lose weight or being given a pill to reduce the hypertension from the obesity won't work.

Dr. Weiss stresses that all patients are different and that cookie-cutter approaches to hypertension, obesity and diabetes will fail. Some patients are and some are not prepared to stick to a plan that involves completely cutting out smoking or TV watching, cooking healthy meals and getting vigorous exercise. To get well you need to work with your doctor to lay out all the options and choose options you know you can handle. An effective health plan could include exercising more, getting more sleep, eating healthier foods, cutting out or reducing TV watching, cutting out or reducing junk food, cutting out or reducing alcohol consumption, or adopting stress reduction techniques such as walking, listening to music or meditation.

Dr. Weiss wisely advises us that no one can succeed on their own and that we will increase our chances of success by building a support network made up of family and friends to help us with things like quitting smoking or resisting that pint of ice cream. He tells us to forgive ourselves if we slip up by having too much wine, having one cigarette or eating a pint of ice cream. After all we're only human, and a commitment to health is a lifelong commitment on a very long journey. Better to forgive than to engage in self-hate and despair and go completely off the wagon.

Dr. Weiss finds it helpful to think of our alternatives in terms of vicious or virtuous cycle. In the vicious cycle negative thoughts and feelings interact and reinforce each other. In the virtuous cycle positive thoughts do the same. A vicious cycle can occur when a minor injury leads to less exercise, more comfort food eating, weight gain, loss of self-confidence and self-recrimination. A virtuous cycle occurs when more exercise takes off pounds and yields a more attractive, energetic body producing still greater resolve to eat healthy, exercise regularly and stay on track. We should be conscious of which cycle we're in at any given moment. Seeking honest feedback from trusted people helps. If we are in a vicious cycle, then seeking help from our support network will help get us back into a virtuous one.

Small book with a big message
More Health, Less Care by Peter J Weiss, M.D.

This small book is a huge gem.It is very refreshing to have a book written by a medical doctor who takes into account that people are not like cars; people do need to be treated holistically by the medical profession.We as patients also need to remove our dependence on the medical profession and the "magic" pills and to become responsible for our own health and well-being.And Dr Weiss provides a guide line as well as examples to help us to do that.
Dr Weiss encourages us to take into account not only our physical health, but also our emotional and spiritual health as well, because as many of us are aware, they are all intertwined.He strongly suggests that we write our own Personal Prescription for good health.Dr Weiss encourages us to gather a team to support us with our health goals - not just to rely on a doctor but friends, wellness coaches, pharmacists and other health professionals.He also suggests having an open mind and to look at alternatives.
Dr Weiss does encourage people to take a multi-vitamin (which is an excellent start to a nutritional program) I would also recomend that an advanced quality (nutriceuticals) multi-mineral, antioxidants and omega-3 are also added.A multi-vitamin on its own may be better than nothing but adding the others to the mix may make a bigger improvement.
Currently I have three people in my life who may benefit from reading this book, but I think only one of them is ready to make a change for the better.I was thinking of this one particular friend in the part of the book where Dr Weiss discusses willpower. This book also provides guidelines for Wellness Coaches to help their clients achieve their health goals.
By the end of the book you will have a full understanding of the meaning of the title. I read this book in one and a half hours because I am familiar with the concepts.The concepts may be new for many people so it is really helpful that Dr Weiss explains the how-to and he also provides examples of how these concepts can be put into practice.This a book that I am very pleased to have in my toolbox.
