Product Description
Purportedly named for the many beech trees growing on its hillsides, Beechview was settled by Scotch-Irish and English pioneers in the late 1700s. This Pittsburgh neighborhood stretches along a broad ridge two and a half miles south of the Point.

While Pittsburgh grew and developed into the political and economic center of the region, on the ridge, self-reliant farmers, miners, and shopkeepers maintained an easy interdependency. In 1905, Beechview separated from Union Township to become a borough. The broad ridge was graded and laid with trolley track, which brought commercial and residential development to the area. Beechview became a destination community for inner-city residents seeking relief from the crowded urban spaces. Hundreds of new families arrived, established businesses, and created a degree of prosperity for the community. Beechview merged with Pittsburgh in 1909, and today, it is a thriving and diverse neighborhood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hand Of Providence in One Man's Life
Many autobiographies seem to reflect a personality that can be described as egotistic and self promoting. FOREVER A PRIEST by Father McCarthy is not among those. This book is filled with warmth, humility, grace and charm and is an accurate reflection of the author's own personality.

The story of Fr. McCarthy's life begins with what may be the seminal event in his life which occurred in his mid-seventies. It may be characterized as an unexplainable phenomenon. But people of faith would call it a minor miracle. Whatever you call it, for Fr. McCarthy, it seemed to validate his life.

From his humble beginnings in South Boston and the oldest of nine children, Fr. McCarthy's life has been one of service to others and selflessness. As each chapter illustrates, he has been many things in his life including shipbuilder, teacher, coach, pastor, musician, chaplain, and care minister, to name a few. He faced many struggles, and as any person of faith would do, he prayed to vanquish them.Sometimes it seemed that Divine Providence lent a hand to help Fr. McCarthy on his life journey. But when most people head for the retirement home, the aforementioned spiritual event reinvigorated him to get out of his rocking chair overcome his infirmities and begin another phase of his life.

This book is an enjoyable and an easy read. But more importantly it is a faith filled narrative of a priest devoted to helping others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Priest-skeptic witnesses a "miracle" and tells the story
For the past year and a half I've resisted reading Father Thomas P. McCarthy's book, "Forever a Priest."
The cover of the paperback has an astonishing photo of a religious phenomenon I didn't want to deal with...a sacred host bleeding at Mass, held in the hands of a priest. But my friends nagged so much, I gave in.
Aside from the introduction and Chapter One which tell the circumstances surrounding the "miracle," (he puts it in quotes, for want of a better word) in Worcester, Mass., in the home of the semi-comatose now 20-year old, known as "Little Audrey," the book is McCarthy's autobiography. He is an ordinary Viatorian priest who witnessed something extraordinary in 1996. Instead of retiring he became, at age 76, a troubadour of the Real Presence. (He's actually a good Irish fiddler.)
McCarthy, raised in a South Boston tenement during the Depression, with brothers and sisters, a devoted mother, and a father who abandoned them for alcohol addiction. An average student, but with a strong calling to priesthood, young McCarthy left school at 16 to support the family. During WWII, 4-F in the draft, he worked in Boston's shipyards, getting his diploma at night school.
His yearning for priesthood became reality at 25, when an acquaintance recommended him to the Viatorians, and they welcomed him in 1945. All he knew about the community was, "they wanted me...they were going to let me become a priest."
McCarthy, who may have considered himself the least likely Viatorian to succeed, has had a career blessed with a variety of ministries. Fifty-four years as teacher, associate, pastor, retreat leader, marriage counselor, hospital chaplain and author. For the last 15 years he has worked and resided at the Viatorian Retirement Center, in Arlington Heights, Ill.
In McCarthy's last 70 pages, he returns to the paranormal and recounts his personalwitness of Little Audrey Santo. She is called a pure victim soul, because she has probably never committed a mortal sin following her tragic drowning accident at age four.
Initially skeptical because "mystical phenomena were not my bag," McCarthy says he "came face to face with the living presence of Jesus" in a bleeding host.
Audrey's story has been recounted in newspapers, People Magazine, and on TV's 20/20, and Unsolved Mysteries. While the phenomena are still being evaluated by the church, a tabernacle is permitted in Audrey's room.
At times she appears to suffer, and as of 1989 statues, icons, pictures and crucifixes in her room ooze oil, some blood. (The Diocese of Worcester calls the manifestations "inexplicable.") McCarthy was present and concelebrating a Mass in the family's make-shift chapel in 1996 when one of the hosts on the paten began to bleed. By coincidence, the Mass that day was being videotaped.
Two lay women in Lake County who later viewed the distributed video, realized it needed someone's personal witness to make an impact on a multitude of people. They located McCarthy, and convinced him at age 77, to go on a lecture tour to prayer groups and beyond. He accepted the task as another call of ordination. McCarthy exhorts priests, whether gifted or simple, young or retired, not to lose the wonder "of who we are and what we are doing." He hopes people in the pews "will be more attuned to the man on the altar and the Mystery that he is living and celebrating."
He says that's what miracles are for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless Memories
I enjoyed this book very much. Lycreciaa very nice person, who went through Hell because of her parents addictions and marital problems. It was warm and real and touching. Many statements from family and friends to tell the story of what really happened. They were there. At the end of the book, Lycricia thanks you for reading her book. Well, thank you for writing it, Lycricia. Now I know a little more about the mystery that always surrounded Hank and Audrey Williams. I loved hearing about their home life, and a legend has come to life. May they both rest in peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good natured Outlook.
Of the 10 or so major contributions in book form regarding Hank and Audrey that have sifted down and settled thru the gravel of time, I found this book to be the most important as far as really getting an intimate feel on what it was like to see these two alive, in love, in anger and in all their glory. One cant help but root Lycrecia on as she obviousley loved her mother and her stepfather, despite their many flaws. After completing this book (and I have read it several times) I finished with a sense that Lycrecia is a good natured person, who made her peace with a situation that she could have just have easily chosen to be bitter and disgruntled over. This woman appears to have hidden nothing. And their are some ugly bits in here, I assure you.But she also doesnt hide that she loved her mother, and father....but Midway thru the book you can sense that she had to detach from her mother and and her mother's sad spiral downwards into a narciscist's dismal finale of lonesomeness and discontent. The pleasure of this book, to me, was in the details....from birthday serenades to the color of the wallpaper in the homes she grew up in.History is so heavily buried in accounts Of Hanks tragic, suffering and misery that the reader has to regroup here and there and realize that Ol'HAnk had fun and family and horses and ailments and good times. To Lycrecia he was and will always be "Daddy" and I liked how that made me feel.

HANK WILLIAMS HAD MORE THEN MISERY....some might not want that to part of the picture, but its there and personallyI will forever be grateful to Mrs. Lycrecia for that.

As a woman, I read this book and it felt like a letter from an old freind.Partly because a Southern Woman seems to be born with this endearing quality, usually complimented by a grit-eating grin.

THis book is one of my favoritemosts! An absolute MUST have for any Hank and/or AUdrey enthusiast.

IF you are just starting to consume the information about Hank's life ....go for Escott's Bio and the Snapshots from a lost HIghway.....and then, because its a sweet and satisfying read, have this book for dessert.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Other Side Of The Story
This book is kind of an oddity in the world of Hank Williams oriented literature. The earlier chapters (the ones about Hank Williams) are sketchy, in places, and though one senses a real affection for Mr. Williamsin Lycretia's narrative, there are few new details to surprise the morethan casual reader.Where this book comes to life andbecomes a good readis in the second two-thirds, as the focus shifts to Audrey. Audrey hasgenerally gotten a bad deal, both in life and in print, and this is thefirst book that has even attempted to humanise her. That it succeeds indoing so makes it all the more likeable, although the picture it paints ofher final ten years is a bleak and depressing one, and the comment that itmakes about Nashville and the music establishment deserves to be expandedto book length.Although only the most "completist" of HankWilliams collectors (or masochists) would want to hear Audrey's"greatest hits collection" (formerly available on Bear FamilyRecords), most would do well to read this book, to get the full story ofthe oft-maligned "first" Mrs. Williams, and the horrible sad turnher life took.
