From the author: Coronary artery disease is the single leading cause of death in the United States (American Heart Association [AHA], 2000) and obesity, a chief risk factor, is reaching epidemic proportions in children (Bellizzi & Dietz, 1999). Research has shown that initiating healthy habits as children will carry over into adult life, thereby decreasing coronary artery disease. Cardiac nurses at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, developed a Heart Healthy Curriculum for school age children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. The curriculum is divided into four levels to meet the developmental needs of the students. Different teaching modalities are used to facilitate the children's participation in the program. In addition to the educational benefit of the curriculum, the children benefit from enhanced self-esteem and gain assistance in dealing with peer pressure. Through the curriculum, children are empowered to make decisions that affect their own health at an age that can make a difference.
