ANTLR is a parser generator-a program that generates code to translate a specified input language into a nice, tidy data structure. Barely adequate
For a "definitive work" on ANTLR, it really is thin, superficial, and plainly disappointing.For example, I wanted to know what the individual grammatical switches are, what they do, and how they interact with each other.There are only about 3 pages to cover all that!I have cracked the book several times only to give up, go to the wiki and try out with small grammars and guess the result.

Great Tool, Horrendous Book
You know when you need to review someone's documentation at work, and it's very clear that your coworker thought he did a great job but you discover to your horror that he mashed every conceivable fact in sideways until the doc was just bursting with incomprehensibility?That's the situation you'll be in if you do like I just did and plunk down for this book.

It's very clear that Mr. Parr knows a great deal about what he's written, and, if you already know as much about it as he does, you'll find everything in order.If, on the other hand, you're coming from either a bog-standard LR(k) background or, like me, a combinator-parsing background, you'll find no systematic description of what the actual model for ANTLR is -- what you'll find is a hap-hazard hodge-podge of explication followed by Mr. Parr copping out and providing the generated code output instead of actually explaining what's actually going on. Over and over and over again.

The tool is clearly very well thought out and works well, but the book's random, cluttered and disorganized.Mr. Parr should have hired a competent technical writer to digest and organize this material for him.If, like me, your situation demands that you work with ANTLR instead of rolling your own parser library, you'll pay the price for his lack of discipline.

Starts from zero, takes you through to the end
If you know nothing about parsers, lexers, or DSLs in general, this book does a fantastic job getting you from nowhere to BOOM pretty quickly.For pretty mind-bending material, that's really important.The book is a fantastic reference and I was able to put together a truly complicated grammar in a few days.Worth every penny, and then some.

Serious ANTLR users should have this
Well, really, how many *casual* ANTLR users are there?The ANTLR community might be broadly divided into three groups: (1) Terence Parr, the self-described maniac behind ANTLR; (2) the demigods of ANTLR who are slightly more numerous than Terence and have already learned at the School of Really Hard Knocks; and (3) the rest of us, who want to become productive with ANTLR.It's that last group of us who can benefit from this text which softens some of the knocks.To be sure, this book is not a shortcut or substitute for getting your hands dirty and experiencing some frustration.Creating languages is not for slackers.No book can change that.The real value of this text is as an in-depth guide to the guts of ANTLR.It's a very "pragmatic" book and might have been called "The ANTLR Missing Manual" if another publisher had not already locked up that motif.Although the author tries to start from zero knowledge, I think you really need to have worked through at least the main examples at [...] first.Then, you'll be prepared to appreciate what this book has to offer.It's a great field manual for people in the thick of operating the tool.

The critiques (and criticisms) of the strong Java flavor of this book have some basis in fact.But this is, after all, a book about a programming tool written in Java.Professionals should be able to overcome this obstacle, and anyone who tries to find an equal to ANTLR without the Java baggage will quickly discover that learning enough Java to use ANTLR is a comparatively small price to pay.

Final words: Read the second book ("Language Implementation Patterns") first.Actually, read chapters 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10 of that book.Twice.That second book is hardly Java-centric at all and indeed only incidentally about ANTLR.Then get this first book ("The Definitive ANTLR Reference") and get to work.From there, you won't need any more advice from a book review.

Best source available on ANTLR
This is a book I would highly recommend to anyone writing a translator with ANTLR. Although there is no shortage of information regarding ANTLR on the Web, there is a lot more in the book itself.

Creating grammars for language recognition is one of those complex topics that have been theorized a lot. Mastering them seems the privilege of academics and PhD s.

Terence Parr is definitely one of these gifted academics. Part III of the book is proof enough that he knows this topic in and out. But unlike other academic brains, Terence also profoundly understands software developers. That gives an extremely practical and example-rich part I and II. The samples provided are much more detailed and clearly explained than the online material I could find. This mixture of science, pedagogy and software engineering is very unique.

Like many other software developers who burnt their fingers with LEX and YACC, I tended to stay away from grammar-based language recognition. After reading this book, I feel much more comfortable with the subject. ... Read more

Good reference from a beautiful mind
I really liked this book. It is written by one of the most brilliant mathematicians of our generation. It presents some of the problem solving techniques math contestants should master in a mature though approachable manner. I wouldn't suggest it as the only book to consult when designing a training curriculum for high level math contestants, but it is definitelly a good reference, and nicely written.

bait and switch
the publisher's ethics in releasing this "second edition"

much in line with what's coming out of wall
street lately -- this is a shameless exploitation
of the author's recent medal received long after
he "wrote" this book -- this slim volume is in fact
thin not only in terms of page count but also in terms
of originality -- in the sense that it ain't got any --
problems , almost all of which are painfully well known,
are laboriously treated to several pages of wasteful
verbiage before finally revealing the one or two line
solution -- there is no reason on earth why anyone who
has even a modest problem book collection should consider
this hack job --

15 year old math tips
This charming book explains why math olympiad puzzles are fun, and gives 15 year old insights ( in two senses --- most of the text was written by the 15 year old Terence Tao, but revised with some additional good exercises 15 years later by 30 year old Fields medalist Terence Tao.)The style is chatty, and the advice and worked examples are very good and do not require any math beyond pre-calculus.The level of difficulty is just right for would be high school math competitors, and adults with some math who enjoy a mild challenge.

Poorly Written and Unclear
Obviously patched together from topics written over a period of time, this book is not cohesive nor understandable. Mills doesn't spend any words developing his topics nor explaning the development. Spend your resources on Hamilton's classic and great definative bible,Time Series Analysis instead.

it's a terrific book for non-linear time series analysis
This is a very compact, practical book. It edits in a very readable way. What I like it most is that it contributes to non-linear time series analysis a lot, whereas not too many other time series related books do.The real data in the appendix can be downloaded and played around by thereaders. Terence Conran...in a league of his own.
This book is decidedly dated yet still manages to be relevant by today's decorating standards.Good style never goes out and although there are some glaringly bad pictures of the 70's heavy-handed approach at it's worse (think crazy patterned wallpaper and excess), there are tons of pictures and details that inspire.The original House Book is still one of my all-time favorite Terence Conran books.

The original Ikea
Although this book was published in the 1970s, the concepts of combining various textures, colors, materials, and their placement in each space of your home are timeless.The photography is amusingly dated, though.Even so, the staged designs on each page are delicious to flip through - it look very much like an Ikea catalog... but from the 1970s!

Native funk and flash
One of my favorite interior books. Very appealing '60s and '70s interiors that seem to belong to interesting people. This book has an authenticity and appeal that you will not find in other interior books of the period, which often lean too far in the direction of bland professionalism or tacky manufacturer promotions. Also a glimpse of European family life and mores. Colorful country-life tales from Iran
This book is quite an enjoyable and fast read. Mr. O'Donnell, born and raised in Oregon, decided to go live outside of a small Iranian village for 15 years. He never mentions why he made that decision, but it really is irrelevant since during his stay there, he kept a journal and came away with some very entertaining stories.

For someone trying to get a fair-minded and non-political description of rural life in Iran, this would be a great read. The author left Iran to come back to the U.S. before the Islamic Revolution, so he never mentions it or any other other political matter really. A seemingly secular person himself, he nevertheless appears to be able to view and describe all categories of Iranians with objectivity. Overall, a pleasant and informative book for anyone interested in life in Iran.

One of the best books I've ever read
It's simple, beautiful and illustrative. You will be transported to a different place at a different time.

A Lost World
O'Donnell's "Garden of the Brave in War" is a lovely lost gem of a travel memoir-- his account of his time on a farm in northern Iran in the 1960s. It's elegant, delightful, sad, and engrossing. It's also about a lost world-- Iran a decade or so before the Revolution, an Iranian countryside still only dimly aware of "modernization", where politics-- if anyone notices at all --are local and tribal, where the author is not an infidel or a "Westerner", but rather seen by the locals as a hapless city dweller who needed to be gently taught about country life. O'Donnell conjures up visions of a lost time and place-- the Iran where he spent fifteen years, an Iran far removed from the ominous place it seems in 2007 --and tells a lovely sad story. This is one of those forgotten books I'm glad to be able to recommend.

Terence O'Donnell does a masterful job of vividly describing the scenery, the people, the lives, the simplicity and the colorful everyday lives of "locals" in the villages and towns he has stayed and visited in Iran.His observations, I found, very insightful and as best as I have experienced them myself, very accurate.I was saddened to know that he has passed away, this would have been a man I would have loved to sit down with and hear his stories, over a hot cup of sweet tea.

This book involes a great deal of humor, culture, and one man's experience in the wonderful and somewhat mysterious country of Iran.It is an extremely easy book to read, and is very informative.When finished with the book you think about how good the book was, and later you realize how much you learned about the Iranian culture.I recommend it to anyone interested in culture and/or the Middle East.I also recommend it to anyone who is looking to read a book so different it is refreshing. ... Not bad
According to the back of the book, this book (and volume 2) are designed for an honors undergrad analysis class.This, however, is most definitely not the case.The book, especially volume 1, is quite basic: The first 150 pages are devoted to constructing the real numbers, and fundamentals (set theory, functions).The exercises aren't too bad, and the style of writing is nice.In volume 1 there are a few typos, and in Volume 2 there are a lot of typos (check Tao's UCLA page for an errata).My main complaint about the book is that Tao defines things his own way (which often differs from Rudin's book and others), so it is a little tough to supplement with other books.Overall though the book is not bad, and worth a look ($30 bucks new is quite reasonable).

Good but not worth to buy
This book (as well as the 2nd volume) comes out from the author's lecture notes.It's decent work but I would expect much more from a renowned mathematician.

The book takes a very formal approach.It starts with building the number systems, from natural numbers to real numbers. The proofs are generally more detailed than similar text books.The chapters on Lebesgue integration are good.The author explains why the Lebesgue measure exists, instead of just presenting the definitions and theorems, like most introductory books do.The remarks dotted everywhere are instructive, reflecting the author's broad knowledge in mathematics.No surprise, given Tao is one of the most versatile mathematicians in our time.

The bottom line is it's good but not exceptional. For introductory analysis book, I'll still choose Rudin's "Principles of Mathematical Analysis".It covers more topics yet it's more concise than these 2 volumes.

Coffee Table Favorite
I have loved this book for years! The pictures are great- so many unique uses of space, all very high quality design. The Spaces: Modern, clean look, colors, nooks, hidden spaces, sculptural quality, examples from all over the world, inspiring, creative. Not a book that *instructs* you how to use *your* small space, unless you have the $$$ or the skills to design and build this stuff for your own place, but I wasn't looking for that. Great coffee table book. Spend full hours just looking at the beautiful, full color photos, bookmarking pages and showing rooms to your friends/significant other. Pages you can see on Amazon don't do it justice. Great book, very well done.

Lives up to its title.....
Grew up in a small home and have lived in small homes most of my life. What I liked about this book is there are enough examples of clean simple living spaces and not the typical older small home in the states where rooms are small and almost claustrophobic.Like the light colours of some of the rooms and the airiness.And yes many homes shown are ultra modern or what some may see as 'less is more' and this is what appealed to me.

I needed ideas for a new place that would be between 400-700 square feet in size with no wasted space, where building up would create a sense of roominess and where bedrooms, kitchen and living room/dining room combinations would have tons of hidden storage space so that 'stuff' wasn't all over the place.And this book delivered.

And yes, homes in Europe and Asia are shown, and I am glad, because they have been doing small open living spaces so well for so long.And energy efficient in style as well.

Small Spaces
I browsed this book first at my local bookstore and wasn't interested at first but then just decided to buy it and i've been very satisfied. It's not your "usual" interior design book with just lots of beautiful photos - this one offers case studies with actual floor plans as well plus good information about the projects.

Not a big fan of Terence Conran's work but this is a book has been good to me!

#3 out of 7 "Small decor" books rated
I place this 3rd among the 7 "decorating small spaces" books I bought.This is the only exception to my objections about those focusing on European dwellings. Conran features London & Paris apts (plus Hong Kong & an Italian stable!), but unlike others, some ideas are adaptable in America. Most units are 300-400 sq. ft.; the largest is 1000. Photos are helpful, except for a few so arty they require a double take to figure out what you're actually supposed to be seeing. Charming Intro portrays creative "expansion" of tiny areas-everything from a 1940s mobile van to a treehouse.

Over the last 160 years, photography has been used to record all aspects of human life and activity. Over this period the medium has expanded its capabilities in the recording of time and space, allowing us to capture the fleeting moment and to visualize both the vast and the microscopic.
