Grabs you and doesn't let go.
I picked up Dead Air when I read it was a finalist in the Mensa Sharp Writ Book Awards this year.I can see why--the book was wonderful.I got hooked from the first page and literally read it in one sitting.The characters were true-to-life and appealing, the mystery was creative and unique, and the tension kept building until the very end.I felt as if I truly were at Ellsford University with student dynamo and amateur detective Sammy Greene.

The story begins on a bucolic New England Ivy League campus--but beneath the aura of tradition, fissures are disrupting the ivory tower.Students are disappearing and committing suicide.Professors who resist publishing, perish. Evangelical preachers sound apocalyptic warnings. A research partnership helps salvage the school's bottom line, but at what cost?Brooklyn-born radio talk show host Sammy Greene, a gefilte fish out of water in Vermont, gets her radar triggered with the possible murder or a beloved professor, and starts to dig below the surface of the academic patina, uncovering a web of corruption and greed.Can she find the killers before she herself becomes a victim?

I held my breath til the very end.Tight, sharp writing that makes each scene live inside your imagination.Action that keeps propelling the characters beyond their control.Ethical and philosophical questions about our educational system, religion and politics, and research and Big Pharma that are critically relevant today.Top notch on all fronts.You can enjoy the book and then mull over its themes with a re-read.

More for the voracious non-critical reader
As life gets shorter, I get fussier about what I will read.Twenty years ago, even ten, I'd probably have enjoyed this book.I reserved it via inter-library loan after reading an intriguing review in Mensa Bulletin.I don't have a problem, as some reviewer did, with the idea of a conservative college in New England.The premise seems completely workable:a medical thriller at a college.Michael Crichton could have written it in his sleep.

But for me, now, this book does not work.It is too heavy handed, too full of adjectives, too earnest.From the opening of the Prologue ("Cacophonous shrieks and squeals..."-- as opposed to quiet shrieks and squeals?) to the choppy first chapter, which covered everything from suspicious goings-on at the infirmary to snotty jocks in science class to the provocative radio show of the heroine, a studet suicide and an animal rights activists protest event, Dead Air is just too contrived right off the bat.

That said... these are my opinions and might not be yours.It occurs to me that people who enjoyed The Brimstone Network might be fine with this book.

It might go on to be not so bad.I couldn't get past page 15.Twenty years ago I might have read it and enjoyed it, but now, now I want more skill in the writer's craft.If you are a voracious omnivore of a reader, you may well enjoy this book.

Well-researched medical thriller
A rash of student suicides has hit the campus of Ellsford University! What can be the cause? Sammy Greene is determined to get to the bottom of things as a reporter and talk-show host for W.E.L.L., the campus radio station. She is tough, dedicated, and prone to exclamations in Yiddish, a result of being raised by her traditional grandmother. She plans a Memorial show for the most recent, a young man with a great future ahead, a talented musician and composer, and homosexual.

Interviews with professors, students, and friends trigger some questions as to whether these suicides are what they seem.A fanatical religious group, with an overly zealous leader preaching, anti-gay, anti-abortion, and anti-corporate funding of research, she begins to investigate the group as possibly responsible for the "suicides".

Having left her purse at the home of her biology professor during an interview, she returns the next morning to retrieve it, and the tape from her interview. When she arrives, Sammy discovers Professor Conrad is dead from a self-inflicted bullet. Another seemingly unrelated suicide? But why then did his mentor commit suicide in the same manner with the same gun 3 years before?Retrieving her purse, she realizes that it was running until it ran out, and possibly there will be some evidence on it.

Thus begins Sammy's thrill-ride as she battles against all comers including the police chief, her boyfriend, the Dean, other professors, and the Reverend Taft. No one will listen to her, and all warn her to leave it alone, they are satisfied with the suicide theory. Even Professor Conrad had tried to warn her off.If he was going to commit suicide, why the warning?

This story is fast-paced, factual in many ways, researched thoroughly by the authors who are well-versed in their subject.The suspense is high and the action continuous with little snippets of humor to ease the tension. Suspicions take sidetracks throwing Sammy and Campus Police Chief Pappajohn off course several times. Danger lurks everywhere. She is not even sure she trusts Pappajohn.Now, two students are missing. What is the connection?

A strong story and very current, the dangers in the world of today as we lose control of who owns what in business, what conglomerate is supporting life-saving research, this is a medical thriller that satisfies. When Sammy's missing tape is located after a suspicious fire destroys the radio station, answers start flowing thick and fast and in several directions. Everyone seems to suspect the wrong person(s). The race heats up all through the book, to a heart-stopping climax.

Both authors have written thrillers before. Both are in the field of health care and research.This is the first collaborative story by Deborah Shlian and Linda Reid, and the first introduction of Sammy Greene, which appears to me to be the beginning of a series. If so, I will be watching for the next episode!

Female College Sleuth
Sammy Greene is a student at Ellford College in New England where she hosts her own radio show on the campus station WELL. She does not mind tacking controversial topics and ruffling feathers along the way.

This story centers around several suicides on campus that Sammy thinks are suspicious. One was her professor Dr. Conrad who she had visited the night before the suicide to get an interview. She returned as she left something at the house and found him dead. She is suspicious and being a journalist, she sets out to find some answers to her questions. She also wants to provide some information on WELL about suicide and gets her boyfriend, Ryan who is a medical student to go on air with her and provide some advice to the student body.

The more Sammy gets involved the more she realizes there is more to the story and the more danger she is in. There was another professor who also committed suicide and a student also. Are all these suicides somehow related? She comes to head with several people as she investigates - Reverend Taft, who wants to shut down the experimental program using animals and Chief Papajohn who thinks Sammy shows up too much at the wrong places, hindering his own investigation. However, none of this stops Sammy. Part of her motivation is that her own mother committed suicide and she goes to Dr. Osbourne to find some answers. Once a deadly fire happens at the campus radio station, she thinks it is not an accident and though she is in danger that does not stop her.

Will she solve the mystery before there are other deaths? Moreover, who can she really trust? Read this compelling mystery written by Deborah Shlian and Linda Reid to find out. I have read other books written by teams and this one is seamless. Though Sammy Greene is a college student this is not just a book for young adults. I found her to be a likable and intellectual new female sleuth who I hope the authors bring back in more stories.

A shiver runs down the reader's spine in reading the first few pages of this fine new novel by Deborah Shlian and Linda Reid as a glimpse is offered as to what is about to unfold.Ellsford University is a prestigious and ultra-conservative New England college whose Student Health Services program is harboring some truly frightening secrets.Sammy Greene, a junior and host of her own college radio talk show, stumbles upon those secrets following her discovery of the body of a beloved professor of science and genetics at the college.When the official cause of death is determined to be suicide, her inner reporter and amateur sleuth kicks in, only to be made more determined when a talented student appears to have committed suicide as well, and Sammy believes that neither one fit the profile of a potential suicide.Animal studies [and the concomitant animal-rights protests] and other pharmaceutical testing, as well as the question of whether special interests have influenced academic and other decisions at the college, become part of the ensuing inquiries.

When Sammy, a New Yorker who doesn't back down from a challenge, discovers that there had been a third 'suicide' in the past two months, and two students have apparently disappeared from campus, her investigation goes into full swing, occasionally putting her in some TSTL moments but, what the heck, she is a reporter, right?There is little that is subtle in the writing, but that doesn't lessen the mounting suspense as Sammy's life is threatened when she gets too close to the truth.After a little while the reader, unlike the protagonist, isn't sure who, if anyone, can be trusted.A splendid supporting character is Gus Pappajohn, the Greek former Boston detective and current campus police chief, with whom Sammy has a mostly antagonistic relationship.

The topic is eerily timely:No less than the New York Times has in recent days published lengthy articles on the less sinister and more altruistic aspects of animal and human drug trials, in those instances dealing with current and apparently so far successful genetically targeted cancer 'cures.' The authors of "Dead Air" are both physicians and former medical directors of universities and principal investigators in medical research, so one must assume the plausibility of the plot, as comfortable as it might be to think otherwise.Which only serves to escalate its more terrifying aspects.Sammy is a terrific protagonist, one with, as she might say, a lot of chutzpa.The novel is a very satisfying read, and is recommended.

Not for me
I made it a quarter of the way thru this book and had to stop. I love suspense books, but this one involving murdering children was too much for me. From the first page it's quite graphic regarding violence against infants and children. I just couldn't keep reading it. It made me feel sick.

SPELLBINDING
Dr. Leigh Novak decides to take her son Jeremy away from Los Angeles and to a small town in Northern California called Hartwood, population 3000. The day they arrived should have been happy, but instead went from bad to worse. Leigh finds old Doc Ellsford slumped over in his chair, half dead from a stroke. Once Leigh sees Doc off in the town's only ambulance, Gabe Barker comes rushing in with his 3 year old son Brian who has a very high fever and is in a coma. Brian stops breathing shortly after they arrive. Leigh works on Brian for thirty minutes without any results, Little Brian is dead, and he should not be gone he only had the chicken pox. Along the way, Leigh finds friendship in Nora, a well respected childcare giver.

WEDNESDAY'S CHILD gives a disturbing description of child abuse, but this is not just a book about child abuse, it's a story about small town life and its secrets. The Shlians have written a fast paced, taut and very compelling story, I found the book spellbinding and hard to put down. If you like Mary Higgins Clark you will love WEDNESDAY'S CHILD.

A Great Medical Thriller!
Wednesday's Child by Deborah and Joel Shlian is a tense and suspenseful medical thriller that kept me entertained all the way through. This writing team clearly excels in the competitive medical fiction arena, competing with the likes of Robin Cook, Tess Gerritsen, Michael Palmer, Leonard Goldberg, and Patricia Cornwell. I highly recommend this book to fans of medical thrillers and other mysteries who are looking for a real page turner!

thriller cum romance cum sci fi
Rabbit in the Moon is a thriller that takes place mainly in China and Los Angeles.Although it is a thriller, there is a strong romantic element in it as well (and I'm definitely NOT a fan of romances).This element does not take away from the suspense, in fact it adds to it.The book might become a crossover into mainstream because of human relations subplot, but it is a page turner.The center of the story is an element of science fiction as well.It also gives an insider's look at modern Chinese culture and politics and recent history.

A stunningly complex thriller
If you enjoy a well plotted, complex thriller you will love Rabbit in the Moon. This wonderful story has everything: spies, corporate espionage, medical mysteries and an unexpected love story. The fast paced tale takes you from California to China; from Washington to Korea.There are villains and heroes but the skillfully crafted characters keep you guessing as to who is really bad and who is good.

There are enough twists and turns to keep even the most agile of minds content. At the heart of the story is the merging of two cultures, East and West. Dr. LiliQuan is a completely American medical resident at a Los Angeles hospital. Excellent, simply excellent!
I have always been a huge fan of anything involving the Orient.And let me tell you, this book did not disappoint me.This book centers around Dr. Lili Quan.She is a young physician, and although she is of Chinese descent, she considers herself and American through and through.She has no desire to learn anything about her culture, but when her mother's dying wish is for her to go to China to find a Grandfather she didn't know existed she decides to go to honor her.

This book is a whirlwind adventure.Having never been to China myself, these authors have the ability to transport you there through their beautiful descriptions.And, the suspense that ensues once Lili reaches China is sure to thrill any reader.This book has a little bit of everything and is sure to be a hit!

The Rabbit Does Hop and Hop
Clearly, I am in the minority, but I found the Shilian's highly topographical (hopographical,) and predictable novel lacking.I suppose, having lived in Hong Kong, I am far too exacting, but the writer's depictions of Hong Kong were just "off" enough to be tedious, and the twists, turns, and travel from place to place dizzying.

In the end, I felt I was reading an overstuffed travelogue, and have seen better sentence structure from Comp/Lit 101 sudents.For those interested in China and southeast Asia, I recommend:

Double Illusion
As a mother of young children I could not put the book down until I figured out who was kidnapping the babies.Needless to say, I was up all night reading because I could not identify the kidnapper until the end when the book actually spelled it out for me.

I do not find a lot of time to read, so I have high expectations when I do get the opportunity.This book did not disappoint.

High Praise
A fascinating and engrossing story of two cultures.Shou kept my attention and interest for the entire book and lead me to purchase other books by this author. At the end of each book, I put it down and say, "good book." Shou is imaginative, thrilling, well written and altogether a totally satisfying read.

Please forgive my one dissenting vote
I bought this book solely on the basis of all the rave reviews, and it is one of the worst books I have read! The story and the characters are one dimensional and there are absurd stereotypes on every page. The writing style is juvenile. Here are just a few examples: A brilliant Chinese scientist smuggles his young granddaughter, Lili, out of communist China to America. Lili grows up to be a brilliant and exquisitely gorgeous doctor working in a prestigious Los Angeles hospital, but being humble, she has no clue about her stunning attributes. Poor Lili is a frequent victim of racism, even from patients whose lives she has saved. She had a rich, handsome, and brilliant boyfriend who broke her tender heart, because the parents were racist, too. At least she managed to remain a virgin. Lili wears leather and drives a racing motorcycle. That's how she paid for her education - racing motorcycles. On a routine drive home after work, she narrowly escapes death by avoiding collisions with a car and a bus. A police officer, who witnesses this, makes a pass at Lili, but she smiles, gets back on her bike, and speeds away. Meanwhile, Lili's grandfather has discovered the secret formula to long life. Everybody knows how clever the Chinese are with herbs. The grandfather does not want to give the formula to the evil Chinese government, and the government has made him a prisoner and will not hesitate to use torture to extract the formula. Of course, all efforts to make the grandfather talk are unsuccessful. Then someone remembers his granddaughter in America. There is discussion of abduction and using the granddaughter to weaken the grandfather, but the Chinese devils find a more subtle method. I think you get the idea by now, and all this is just the beginning.

I loved this book
Unlike the one reviewer who did not seem to enjoy SHOU, I found this book totally engaging from page 1. Now that China is becoming such an important world power, it's important to understand a little about the history of the country. While SHOU is not really an historical novel, the story does deal with some of the history from the time when Mao comes to power and then jumps ahead 40 years to the period around the incidents that led to the Tiananmen massacres.The themes that the authors include are extremely relevant for our time: how it feels to be a first generation American, what would happen if someone could prolong life and thus increase world population to perhaps disatrous levels,generational issues, the ethics of certain kinds of medical research, etc. While I learned a lot, I would have enjoyed the book simply as an exciting mystery/thriller. I loved the characters of Lilli and Chi-Wen and would be interested in reading a sequel to see what happens to them.

Great history and story!
Shou filled my craving for James Clavell. I loved the history, intrigue and romance woven into the story. The charactors are well written and believable. I was also thankful for the pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book. Both history and adventure fans will find this book a fabulous read.

Great action-packed book!
This book takes the reader for a trip through time and space while providing a variety of learning experiences and great action to boot!

Through the experiences of Lili Quan, the main character, the reader learns about Chinese culture and the evolution of Chinese society. As an American, Lili has a perspective which we all can identify with.

Moreover, this book provides enough action to keep readers turning the page - way past their bed-time!

I can easily imagine this book as a screenplay. The description of sights, sounds, and smells, makes you want to jump on the first plane! ... Read more
