Wait ten years
Sabatini is in a betwixt and between position. The books that absolutely made his reputation, SCARAMOUCHE and CAPTAIN BLOOD, are in public domain and in this collection. Later works of equal success, like SCARAMOUCHE THE KING MAKER, are not. Wait ten years and you'll be able to get most of his big successes, though not all his books (he died in 1950). Meanwhile, you can pick up SCARAMOUCHE, THE SEA HAWK and CAPTAIN BLOOD free somewhere else.

Works of Rafael Sabatini
This collection deserves a hearty round of applause. Sabatini has often been compared to Alexandre Dumas as a master of historical fiction. Though I believe Dumas to be the finest action-adventure writer of all time, and though some of Sabatini's works have been criticized as overly melodramatic, Sabatini has created in Scaramouche an historical action-adventure novel that transcends Dumas. Immediately following Scaramouche was "Captain Blood: His Odyssey." These two books alone sealed Sabatini's success with an audience hungry for adventure tales.
