Product Description

A.A. Milne is one of the most successful English writers ever. His heart-warming creations—Winnie-the-Pooh, Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Tigger and Piglet—have become some of the best-loved children’s characters of all time, and readers the world over are familiar with the stories from the Hundred Acre Wood.    Yet the man himself has remained an enigma. Although in many ways his behaviour was that of a typical golf-playing, pipe-smok-ing Englishman, Milne refused to be typecast, and his publishers despaired when he turned from writing popular columns for Punch to writing detective stories. They complained again when the detective writer presented them with a set of children’s verse, but when When We Were Very Young became one of the best-selling books of all time, Milne’s credibility as one of the world’s favorite authors was sealed.

2-0 out of 5 stars selfish
I am looking at this book from a purely selfish viewpoint.Although it was interesting and I learned a lot more on Milne, the size of the print was so small I could only read about a chapter at a time.I am talking about a size 8 font.Very difficult and it made it much less enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is Wit Vanity?
When I started this book, I was amazed to find that much of A.A. Milne's correspondence in letters is actually kept in one of the libraries at the University of Texas in Austin, which isn't too far from me.I was initially planning on taking a trip over there to ask a librarian to see the letters, but this book is SO exhaustive, I don't really feel the need to see them anymore.

Despite its exhaustiveness, much about Milne remains unanswered. It's like the biography "His Excellency" of George Washington. While being a wonderul, lenghty, in-depth book, the biographical figure is just plain hard to pin down.Nobody can do it.But Mrs. Thwaite puts an unbelievable amount of effort into it, probably reading more to complete this work than I've read in my entire life. There's probably no greater expert you'll find on Pooh and his creator than this lady.

We see Milne's start as a child prodigy who cares only for his brother, follow him through his struggle to start a career after graduation, cheer as he gets lucky and lands his dream job, understand as he grows bored with his dream job and ventures into new fields, wonder how he manages to live through participation in a brutal war, marvel as he grows into a household name before even starting the Pooh books, smile in expectancy as we see his Pooh books outsell seemingly everything there is, grow weary with his thoroughly expressed political beliefs that seem so much less humorous than his writing, and sigh as he dies at the end of a writing career that has only declined since its long-ago peak.

I was inspired to read Ecclesiastes after reading this book.Milne's story really shows the vanity and ultimate unpredictability of the world.Even if you can read when you're two, and become a household name that will be remembered for generations, it doesn't really seem to matter in the end.All that praise Milne wanted for his later works just didn't happen, and everything he did earlier in his life couldn't change that fact.Whether this has anything to do with Milne's somewhat atheistic beliefs, I don't know.I do know that a lot of this biography is quite depressing.Imagine how Milne felt when he had to alter his whole pacifistic theory simply because a man as evil as Hitler could exist. He must have been so disappointed in humanity in order to lower his (very high) ideals like that.

Well, hopefully Blue and his son Billy Moon are somewhere out there in the universe now having a blast, despite the beliefs they had while previously living among us.I feel the need to always thank this man for Pooh, and I'd like to read Mr. Pim Passes By some day when I'm not so burnt out on Milne's name.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive biography of A.A. Milne
It really is too bad that all the good books seem to be out of print. When I saw this one on sale, I knew I had to grab it -- good, bad or indifferent, a book of this size that would give me so much information on one of my favorite authors had to be mine.

Little did I know what a treasure trove I'd found. A.A. Milne had written an autobiography, of course (in which he kept much of himself "buttoned up", so to speak), and his son Christopher (Robin) Milne had added to that in his own autobiographical trilogy; but no one had done a definitive biography. Ann Thwaite got Christopher's permission to try, but Christopher himself felt he would be of little help; all the relevant information seemed to have been destroyed by his mother. Happily, that was far from the case; much had been sold to the University of Texas at Austin and Trinity College in England, and many other family members and acquaintances were able to assist.

The result of Ms. Thwaite's massive efforts is a very detailed, yet very readable biography of a complex man. If there is a great deal of background on Christopher and the Pooh Books along the way, so much the better; but Alan Alexander Milne was a highly regarded writer and editor for Punch and a highly successful playwright long before his short interlude as an author for children. Ironically, it was the Pooh Books that made his fame -- and added an unwelcome burden to his son's life. Yet his natural and acquired pacifism is no less evident in his adult writings, especially in his works pleading for the abolition of war.

If you are a lover of the Pooh Books and want to learn about the man behind them, this is the book to beg, borrow, or...well, maybe someone will permit you to photocopy it. Not I. ....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pity
It is a great pity that books like this go out of print: a pity that goes hand-in-hand with the subject. Of A. A. Milne's hundred or so plays, books and poetry, only five books remain in print. Four of them we all know, the fifth is 'Toad of Toad Hall', and adaptation of Graham's 'Wind in the Willows'. Few people realise that, during his life, Milne was most valued as a playwright. Thwaite realsied this, and that is perhaps why the book is no longer available, despite its brilliance.Twaite concentrates on his wonderful plays and adult books (which can be found if 2nd hand bookshops are searched long enough) with a sensitive yet hard-hitting analysis of the reclusive author. Nobody should be allowed to read the Winnie the Pooh books (brilliant as they are) without reading this. Milne would have wanted it. Superb book. I hope Ann reads this review! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good comedy play
This is about 3 men competing for a woman. It has a few funny moments and is an enjoyable play. My partciular memory is of a quail-pie. Quails may be all right for Moses in the desert, but, if they are served in the form of pie at dinner, they should be distributed at a side-table, not handed round from guest to guest. The Countess having shuddered at it and resumed her biscuit, it was left to me to make the opening excavation. The difficulty was to know where each quail began and ended; the job really wanted a professional quail-finder, who might have indicated the point on the surface of the crust at which it would be most hopeful to dig for quails. ... Product Description

" Play of a Fiddle gives voice to people who steadfastly hold to and build on the folk traditions of their ancestors. While encountering the influences of an increasingly overwhelming popular culture, the men and women in this book follow age-old patterns of folklife and custom, making their own music and dance in celebration of them. Shedding new light on a region that maintains ties to the cultural identities of its earliest European and African inhabitants, Gerald Milnes shows how folk music in West Virginia borrowed rhythmic, melodic, and vocal forms from the Celtic, Anglo, Germanic, and African traditions. These elements have come together to create a body of music tied more to place and circumstance than to ethnicity. Milnes explores the legacies of the state's best-known performers and musical families. He discusses religious music, balladeering, the influence of black musicians and styles, dancing, banjo and dulcimer traditions, and the importance of old-time music as a cultural pillar of West Virginia life. A musician himself, Milnes has been collecting songs and stories in West Virginia for more than twenty-five years. The result is an enjoyable book filled with anecdotes, local history, and keen observations about musical lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fiddle Traditions and Folklore
Along with providing a good understanding of old-time fiddling in West Virginia, this book also provides a wider discussion of other forms of folk music within the state.Milnes's discussion of the various folk traditions associated with fiddling is really interesting to read.He has fine descriptions of house parties, square dance callers' patter, and a good variety of the folk beliefs associated with fiddle tunes. The chapter on the ballad of Naomi Wise is especially good, and I also appreciated the chance to learn more about the dulcimer tradition in the state.Prior to reading this book, I thought that the dulcimer was primarily a recently introduced instrument that became popular only with the 1950s and 60s folk music revival.Milnes broadens that view and demonstrates that there has been an interesting and rich tradition of dulcimer playing in the Appalachians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long overdue
A fine book, evoking a lot more than just thoughts of fiddles. It brings back a lot of memories. There's endless stories winding on late into the night and square dances at the fire station with bright lights and cake walks. It's playing rhythm guitar while sitting on the porch hypnotized by the "play of the fiddle", playing those simple little tunes over and over and over, breathing life into them till they break loose and come alive.Reading Jerry's book was like stumbling into an attic full of memories.

There's something hypnotic about the sound of a fiddle, and Jerry weaves his own spell. All those countless, nameless, fiddle players were drawn to it and just couldn't ever get away.Way back "up the holler".It seems like the devil got hold of them & wouldn't let go.It's like sitting around a campfire, deep in the woods, listening to the baying of the hounds and just wondering what's really out there.Lot's of mystery up in the mountains and those old fiddle players felt it and made it sing out.Jerry really loves his fiddle music, but I think he really loves the spell of the mountains even more.Seems to come out best in the sound of a fiddle, played on the front porch, all alone, nothing but that fiddle sound, a full moon, and the deep silence of the endless woods. That fiddle music just floats in the silence. The hills don't care, they just sit there, and the fiddler plays on, just hearing that sound, going on and on and on...

Yep, it's a pretty good tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any fan of West Virginia fiddling
Gerry Milnes knows more about the tradtional music of West Virginia than probably any other writer on the subject.

This book presents a delightful look at the history of West Virginia fiddling, profiles of the players, and the culture in which this music thrived. It is well researched and presented in a very engaging style.Of particular interest to me were his profiles of some of the musical families of the state. In addition to his look at fiddlers, other folk music traditions are covered as well, including a look at the fretted dulcimer players and builders of the region. There are many helpful and interesting photographs as well.

Also recommended: "Fiddles, Snakes, & Dog Days," Milnes documentary film on the same subject which features the playing of many traditonal West Virginia musicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fiddles and Fiddlelore
I really enjoyed reading this book.Milnes provides good descriptions of the history and the cultural contexts for fiddling in West Virginia. He provides especially good descriptions of dances. My favorite part of the book dealt with some of the traditional beliefs and practices associated with fiddling. There are fascinating traditions that fiddlers continue to use, and there is a wealth of folklore associated with the instrument.Milnes also provides a fine history of dulcimer music in Appalachia, and his work provides a corrective perspective about this instrument as he challenges the degree of purism and perhaps "snootiness" that is associated with fiddling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Play it again!
As a storyteller and passive folklorist I found this book to be extremely useful and well written. The work the author has done to trace the origins of lore is an incredible journey into the past and speaks clearly to thepersistent little voices in my head that are always calling out- "Nowhow on earth did someone think that up." The book does much more thaninstruct the reader: It creates a whole new world around folk traditionsthat is as colorful and as engaging as any novel and as useful forunderstanding Appalachia as any history book. ... What's it like to grow up on a small farm in Illinois only to find yourself, some 20 years later, performing on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House? And then to travel the world, singing in historic theaters from La Scala in Milan to Vienna, Paris, London, and beyond? Former Met star Sherrill Milnes tells all in this completely updated, first-time-in-paperback edition of his very successful biography.Amazon.com Review
A funny thing happened to Sherrill Milnes along his way tobecoming one of the best American Verdi baritones of the 1960s and'70s. In fact, dozens of funny things happened; he took careful noteof them and poured them into an autobiography that will appeal to hismany fans and anyone who relishes backstage opera gossip. Theanecdotes are the best part of this book: they are abundant, sometimesmildly malicious, and often very funny--at least to those readers whoare familiar with operatic plots, personalities, and music. For casualreaders, Milnes explains why the story is funny--for example, why atenor should have been executed after making a mistake in Puccini's Turandot. Milnesmust be read skeptically when he calls himself shy--his ego ishealthier than his voice--but he writes well of the anxieties of anopera star's life, particularly in discussing the vocal problems thathit him in the 1980s and that (whatever he may think) were neverentirely cured. He is indignant about the Metropolitan Opera's failureto renew his contract in 1997. They could have been more sensitive, but he should have known that he had stopped singing reliably at theMetropolitan Opera level years before. The book has a usefuldiscography and a list of his most notable performances. --JoeMcLellan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Everybody who has ever enjoyed opera(even if it is only on the level of one aria at a time)should read this funny, heartwarming, honest, and wise account of the life of one of the world's best and most charismatic opera singers. You find yourself loving his friends and disliking his enemies intensely and would love to meet him face to face and really get to know him.

You can almost hear his voice while reading (don't we wish) and after having finished the book you turn on your CD player immediately and let that amazing barytone fill the room.

A must for all opera fans! DO READ IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars AMERICAN ARIA ENCORE is a fine, lively account.
Libraries interested in opera star biographies will want to include AMERICAN ARIA ENCORE in their collections: it's been updated and revised, appears in a new paperback edition, and presents Met Opera star Sherrill Milnes' biography offering plenty of insights into not only her life, but the politics and processes of the opera world as a whole. From encounters with opera masters to behind-the-scenes politics and events, AMERICAN ARIA ENCORE is a fine, lively account.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it could have been
Now that Sherrill Milnes' career is winding down after four decades, it appears that the long line of twentieth-century American baritones with the vocal amplitude and stamina to tackle the great Verdi roles (Lawrence Tibbett, Robert Merrill, Leonard Warren et al.) is indeed coming to an end.

Opera singer memoirs are a literary breed unto themselves. This one has many points of interest, especially early on. Milnes' recounting of his ancestry, youth, family and upbringing gives a fascinating picture of how a great operatic voice arose out of the farm town of Downers Grove, IL. His early tales of life as a student musician, itinerant opera singer and band member make funny and sometimes harrowing reading. There are many of the usual backstage anecdotes, some very funny, with names discreetly veiled at appropriate moments.

Milnes courageously tackles the issue of the vocal crisis that began in 1981 and dogged him for much of the succeeding decade head-on in a separate chapter, the best in the book. His recounting of the terror that overtakes a performer who sees his entire artistic life and livelihood endangered pierces the reader's heart. These pages are written with an honesty and a willingness to put aside ego that is absent elsewhere in this volume.

The reader who picks up _American Aria_ hoping for any penetrating self-analysis or significant thoughts from Milnes about the music and operatic roles he sang so well will ultimately be disappointed. About the callous termination of his long and distinguished Met career in 1997 he is justifiably indignant; still, one wishes for some sense that perhaps his abilities had changed and that it was necessary to turn his career in a new direction. Though it is fashionable to denigrate ghostwritten autobiographies, a perceptive co-writer or interviewer in this case might have drawn more insights and revelations from Milnes than he appears willing to give of his own volition.

4-0 out of 5 stars An American Divo
In 1965, I was 13. I was dragged kicking and screaming to the opera at the Old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. Little did I know that evening would change my life. I saw Faust and the debut of two singers - Monserrat Caballe and Sherrill Milnes. Now I have to tell you, I didn't know much about voice at that time, but the young Milnes sure looked good to me! And when he sang Avant de Quitter ces Lieux - well, I was hooked. His voice was a remarkable thing. Terribly American in quality and that was a wonderful thing. Here was a big strapping lad from the Midwest, singing like an American and filling the house with a remarkable sound.

Okay, so this crush I had hasn't dwindled any since '65. I still have an infatuation for the guy. When his biography appeared I ran to the bookstore to buy a copy. I read it from cover to cover and (sigh) it's okay. I think I would rather Milnes wrote about technique or style. He is a wonderful teacher. I have seen several of his master classes and the difference he makes in just a few minutes of coaching is amazing.

Sherrill Milnes brought a sexiness to the opera stage. He gave America its first born and bred baritone (he had no European training). He legitimized the American-sounding voice. These are no minor accomplishments. What this stalwart fan would like is for him to share his knowledge about music. I have seen his Master Class video and the tape he made about Verdi. PBS should snatch him up and have him do a series on opera for young people, teaching singing maybe! That's what I'd love to see. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly accurate and scholarly work
A must read, even if only for the sections on the little known phyla of aminals. Although released before the advent of the super-realistic photographs we are priviledged to enjoy today, the ink drawings are quiteinformative and the text is as near-perfect as could be done. A trueclassic on the subject. ... Read more

Product Description
"The Red House Mystery" is a classic novel by Alan Milne, who is actually better known for writing "Winnie the Pooh." Set in a country home known as the "Red House," the novel opens on a party weekend, with most of the houseguests away from the house playing golf or tennis. A typical "locked room mystery," the novel features characters who may not be all they seem to be, acting for mysterious motives ranging from love to revenge. Servants overhear bits of conversation which offer clues. The discovery of a secret passage, the appearance of a ghost, and a convenient lake to hide evidence all become part of the plot. Written in 1922, before Winnie the Pooh was even born, "The Red House Mystery" was a gift for Milne's father, a retired headmaster who loved mysteries. The book was immediately popular; Alexander Woollcott called it "one of the three best mystery stories of all time", and Raymond Chandler, in his 1944 essay The Simple Art of Murder called it "an agreeable book, light, amusing in the Punch style, written with a deceptive smoothness that is not as easy as it looks." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Before Christopher Robin
A. A. Milne is best known as the author of the 'Winnie the Pooh' stories but before he began writing stories for his little boy he penned this story for his mystery loving father. This one has all the classic mystery novel elements, an amateur detective, a house party in the English countryside, and, of course, a body discovered in a locked room.Young, handsome and wealthy Andrew Gillingham had decided that he would stop by the Red House to visit an old friend who was at a house party there.Their reunion was cut short though when the owner of house was discovered dead in the library. All the usual mystery elements are present, the red herrings, the subplots, hints of romance, hidden motives and secret passages all twist and turn into a merry chase until all is revealed in the final chapter. It is a fun read, and while many readers will reach the conclusion before our hero there will still be a twist or two that will come as a surprise.

This was originally published in 1922 when the cliched mystery novel elements this story abounds in were all fresh and new.For the most part the story holds up well although at times it does begin to drag a bit.It is worth the effort to push on through the slower bits to get to the charming finale - and to try to spot any forerunners of Christopher Robin's friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfying Locked-Room Mystery
Note: This review is of an earlier edition of the book containing an Intro by author Milne.

I was a little skeptical about Milne's ability to turn out a good book in a genre so different from his wise Pooh whimsies. I became especially skeptical after learning that this was to be Milne's one-and-only foray into the field of mystery-writing. So he wouldn't have a chance to practice his aim, to practice pulling the trigger without jerking. However as it turns out, Milne hits the bulls-eye dead-center on this one try.

In his introduction to this edition, Milne sets forth what he considers the criteria for a classic mystery - and he meets all those criteria in this engaging, quintessentially British drawing-room murder.

Although written in 1922, "The Red House" has a timeless quality. However, aside from being gently low-key, there is one other sense in which the story does depart from what's popular for most modern murders. Milne says that in order to be a classic, a mystery must feature an amateur detective, and this amateur must reach his conclusions by pure logic - leaving any "microscopes (and such) at home." The detective should only have access to information that the readers might also possess in their everyday, commonsense occupations. So there's no CSI-like reliance on the arcane habits of blowflies here.

The breezy bachelor detective, who serendipitously arrives at the house-party just moments after the murder - reaches his conclusions by way of simple mental re-enactments. When he espies something a shade unusual, he traces back and thinks of all the scenarios that could have led to that particular configuration of things and events. Why is a man's collar tossed by itself in a downstairs hamper? Why are the books in the manor-house library arranged in that slightly inconvenient way?

When Antony Gillingham and his chosen Watson sidekick arrive at the junction where all these different re-imagined scenarios intersect - they have their motive - their means - and their killer.

There are only a limited number of suspects here, so you won't be faced with having to memorize a long list of characters. This makes for an easy, but very satisfying read. This is a book every mystery-story fan should have in his or her permanent library - along, of course, with that dead body sprawled on the rug. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
This is the best rendition of Winnie the Pooh my husband and I have ever heard. We got the cassettes when our kids were 2 and 4.They're now 7 and 9 and we still all listen to it in the car at times. In fact, the tapes melted a bit in the sun, so we've just ordered a new set of these CDs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Rendition!Love that there are more multiple readers!
This is a terrific version of the Winnie the Pooh stories.I particularly like that there is a cast, rather than one reader doing all of the voices.Makes it easier for my little boy to follow, I think. The language is graceful and elegant and we are really enjoying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully done! Entertaining and Wonderful to Listen to.
My 4 year old son loves this double CD. The voices of the characters are wonderful. The stories are true to the books and very entertaining. When it is my son's turn to choose what we listen to in the car, we end up listening to these CDs. We have owned them for over a year and he continues to request them. Highly recommended. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars No Quotation Marks in the Digireads Kindle Edition
I had a free version of this eBook that I obtained for the Kindle but it had issues with the Table of Contents (making several hundred locations a link in the TOC as far as I could tell - but making it very difficult to know where to start reading and made me concerned about potential other problems with that version) so I decided I would spring for an official Amazon Kindle Version. There were three versions available, one version coupled with a second book called The Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux. A cheaper "Public Domain" version of just the Red House Mystery and this Digireads version. Since I already had a copy of Mystery of the Yellow Room I went with this solo higher priced version by Digireads.

Shortly after beginning to read the book I notice that many places in the book where characters were speaking that there were NO quotation marks. In some places this made reading the book very difficult, trying to determine who was speaking or if it was the writer describing something.

I thought perhaps A.A. Milne actually might not have employed quotation marks when he wrote this book but having read several of his other books where he did use quote marks,I did not think this would be the case just because this was a Mystery book.

So I bought the cheaper "Public Domain" Kindle version of this book (no sample available to try) and ta-dah the quote marks were there (there was no Table of Contents in that version though). So I decided I could live without the TOC but not without the quote marks so I kept that version and returned this one. I am about 1/3 of the way through that version. The writing is typical Milne style and I am really enjoying the "locked room" mystery written early last century and need to go back to find out whodidit. ... Read more
