Underrated Historical Epic
An underrated work of the Silver Age. There are some excellent epsiodes that could stand on their own as mini-epics: the suicides of Vulteius and comrades, Appius 'rape' of the Pythia, Caesar's journey by sea, Scaeva's aristeia, Erictho's necromancy, and Cato's journey through Africa to name just a few. The historical insights into the lives of Caesar, Pompey, and Cato are also especially enlightening. Absolutely worth a first and second look!

"Gore, War, and Monumental Verse"
Lucan, the author of the full-throated but incomplete epic the "Civil War", certainly deserves a spot next to the great Latin poets Ovid, Horace, and Virgil, whose epic works mark the pinnacleeloquence and intelligence of Latin verse. The epic was written during the reign of Nero in the first century AD, and it is characterized by its vehement condemnation of civil war and imperialistic sentiments--this possibly caused Lucan's later fall out of Nero's favor. The primary characters in the epic are Julius Caesar, who is portrayed as a destructive warmonger, and Pompey (Magnus), who is described as ambitious and over his prime. The vivid descriptions of the wars in this work are exciting and at the same time sobering since Lucan's narrative never fails to reveal those attributes of civil war which invoke the most disturbing of feelings. For all this, Lucan's "Civil War" is recommended, and also because the Oxford World Classics always present reliable translations, and this particular edition retains Lucan's charming and long-winded verse that courses so smoothly through the hearts and minds reader's who are fortunate enough to come into contact with it.

If I had known it was another translation of Lucan, I would not have ordered it, BUT I would have made a mistake.This work has a better translation for the modern reader, and lots of good supporting information. Good Introduction to a Difficult Author
A Lucan Reader contains several hundred lines of Lucan, chosen to reflect (some of) the major events covered in the poem. The introduction does a good job of placing the poem in its historical and literary context, and includes a summary of the whole work, which locates the chosen selections in the narrative. There is also a bibliography, covering current work on Lucan.

The book is well laid-out and easy to use. The selections are well-chosen, and the notes cover most of what will baffle anyone new to Lucan. The included vocabulary appears to be complete.

I would have appreciated more coverage in the introductory essay of how Lucan structures his periods to go with the general discussion of his style and use of words, but that's about all that's missing.

A sewy new fantasy!
Lucan is an Archeologist with a passion for history, particularly that of the Holy Grail. He is on a quest to locate it not for the glory, but for the necessity of it. The human race is plagued by sterility and is threatened into extinction if he cannot find a way to allow babies to be born again. With the healing powers of the Holy Grail, he believes that it will solve all of their problems. With an ability to read ancient script, he travels to Pendragon where he believes the Grail to be hidden.

Lady Cael, the High Priestess of Pendragon, is an honored yet feared figure. She is bound by duty to live a life of solitude without love, without intimacy. However, after a chance encounter with Lucan Roarke, she finds herself irresitibly attracted to him. He too is drawn to her and flirts with her although he knows he shouldn't. She should be admonishing him for his audacity, but he makes her feel like a woman - a new experience for her.

Lucan is not the only one searching for the Holy Grail though. Both he and Lady Cael are part of a archeological team that want nothing more than to find the ancient artifact but all for different reasons. Lucan wants to use it to save his people; Lady Cael wants to use it to save her dying nephew; the military wants it for more selfish reasons.

The Holy Grail is protected by ancient magic which make it incredibly difficult to get to. One day, Lucan finds a way to weaken the shields and gets one step closer to it, but moments later a fire destroys the lab and kills most of the team members. After barely escaping alive, Lucan and Lady Cael are blamed for the fire and the resulting deaths so they must run away and come up with a plan to exonerate their names. Let the adventures begin...

This is a futuristic paranormal romance. I will be honest and say that at first I did a bit of the 'ol "eye roll" when I learned that the plot line is based on the belief that the legendary King Arthur hid the Holy Grail on Pendragon (a moon outside of Earth's galaxy) to keep it safe from his enemies. I reminded myself though that this is fictional/fantasy/futuristic book and if I could read about vampires, werewolves and ghosts, then I should really give this book a chance. And I'm glad I did :)

This book really surprised me. It turned out to have so many more elements to the story. Although there is a fair amount of 'bodice ripping' involved, there is also quite a bit of action, science, history, betrayal and suspense. I found Susan Kearney to be a very gifted writer who could make this far-fetched story seem almost believable. The story was fast paced, the main characters were endearing and you never stopped worrying about what could happen to them, the fate of their people and the fate of their own budding relationship.

"I found myself becoming more and more involved and interested in this book. The characters are so diverse and so unique. They are unlike any other characters I have read before. Most of the characters are from the same planet or society and yet they are so different from those around them. Then you have the offworlders like Lucan and Rion, who are completely unlike any of the other characters. What I was not expecting was the depth and the intensity of the chemistry and sexual tension between Cael and Lucan. The sensuality swells between them and is practically pouring off the pages. While the sex scenes are plentiful, they do not take away anything from the book itself. And wow are those sex scenes hot. Lucan and Cael are both very primal and very strong people so the sex can be pretty wild, but it sure did leave a smile on my face. If you like futurist books this is by far one of the greatest I have read lately and I definitely recommend it. I can't wait for the next book in this series. " - Jacquelyn R. Ward

This is a futuristic romance, and if I'm being honest, I did a rather large dramatic eye roll when I learned of the Grail as a plot line, with King Arthur traveling to this planet hundreds of years ago to keep it safe. However, I quickly reminded myself that this was a fictional/fantasy/futuristic book and the author's gifted writing makes you believe in the seemingly out-there story. That's what makes Kearney stand out in this rapidly evolving sub-genre of romance. With a great eye for detailed setting and quick-witted dialog, readers can revel in the fast-pace action and get hooked from cover to cover. Steamy, intense, and sometimes hilarious- I very much look forward to the two other books in this series and where she goes with it. Recommended!

really 4 1/2, worth buying I can't wait for the rest of the series!
Susan Kearney has written a stupendous book with Lucan.And I cannot wait to read the rest of her series!I was particularly attracted to the hero and heroine who really carried the story both were mature (emotionally) and a perfect match.

I was particularly impressed with Lucan, he is not really the typical alpha male.He respects Lady Cael and lets her make her own decisions.He is very cerebral but still a very hunky and resourceful guy who can take care of himself.I especially liked how Lucan knows that Cael is dangerous but he still sees her as a woman and is not afraid to claim her.This is why I feel he is strong enough to be a match for the fiery and strong heroine, which no one else on the planet dares to even touch.Plus there is also a lot of sexual chemistry between the 2!The only quibble I have is Lucan's long resistance to stay in a relationship with Cael even though I understand his concerns.

This is sure to be a fantastic series and the world building were enthralling.I will definitely be buying the next installment as soon as it comes out.If you love the paranormal and or futuristic romances you will love this book.But this book will probably be a little light for those who enjoy the edgy Urban fantasies genre.

Lucan & Cael both work in the same lab on Pendragon & are instantly attracted to one another. Both their worlds, Earth and Pendragon are in desperate situations. The one thing both of their worlds need is the Holy Grail. It could also be the one thing that could tear them apart.

Lucan is a non-stop, entertaining read. Filled with adventure and steamy scenes. Lucan and Cael sizzle. Ms. Kearney has done a wonderful job creating this new world. My favorite part of the story has been the dragon element. I think fans of the King Arthur legends will enjoy this new twist. Fascinating... but true?
Headlined as an investigation into the lives of three of the UK's most notorious 60's gamblers - James Goldsmith, John Aspinall & "Lucky" Lord Lucan - and claiming to reveal, for the first time, the true story behind Lucan's even more notorious "disappearance" - one of the UK's longest running murder mysteries - "The Gamblers" is a quite riveting insight into a bizarre world of power, glamour, addiction, fabulous wealth and self destruction. Like the friend who recommended it to me I read it virtually straight through and while I left with as many questions as answers I discovered, on the way, a whole host of mind-boggling facts about the people who populated London's most exclusive gambling den, "The Clermont Club", and its now iconic sister night-club, "Annabel's".

Cleverly underpinned by sufficient clearly genuine information to make you believe it all, you are, by the last third of the book, quite prepared to fully accept Pearson's take on Lucan's fate, even though the lines between objective analysis and sensationalist interpretation have in fact become fairly blurred. "We say our piece, we make our mark, and then the tide comes rolling in"
Cleverly skewing the legend of the infamous Lord Lucan, Coles sets the stage for a literary conceit that reinvents that terrible night in 1974 when a man of privilege lost his grip, botching his carefully planned murder, and where only his friends came to his rescue and offered him a chance of escape from the law. When we first meet Richard John Bingham known better as Lucky lord Lucan he has been married to Veronica for many years, but is experiencing an anxiety. Desperate to escape the strictures of his marriage, his plan is to murder his wife at their home in Belgravia is as desperate as it is audacious. Lucan is the first to admit that he's a most vile man for allowing it to happen yet Despite it all he has this skewered sense of belief that he is doing it for the good of his three children.

Of course everything goes wrong with the shocking murder of poor Sandra Rivett, who at the age of just 29 is hammered to death in the basement of Veronica's Belgravia home. The random brutality of the initial violence by Lucan's hired henchman who he never sees again, infects every facet of Lucan's being. And to be sure metaphorical house of cards has fallen far differently from how Lucan expected. After leaving his friend Susan Maxwell-Scott's house n Uckfield, Lucan's story becomes a blank canvas while he recounts his car, the Ford Corsair, found abandoned at Newhaven, the bloodstain inside, along with the piece of bandaged lead piping, unstained, but very similar to the one found in the murder house, and also his efforts to sink his beloved boat.

From here it is Coles' clever recreation of events - with typical traces of conceit and upper-class Etonian self-aggrandizement - that make Lucan's narrative so chilling. The author describes in a new, breathtaking reality the rumors that he had been whisked abroad by his fellow cronies at the Clermont Club, particularly his friendship with Apsers, a millionaire gambler and big-hitter who chats away with of if he'd done nothing of any consequence than be picked up from the station and who shelters him in the basement of his home, in a dark airless, windowless bunker for nearly four months. There's also Lucan's sense of self-righteousness in the moments straight after Sandra's murder and his apology to the doomed woman that is so outrageous when considering his brutally honest account of how he wanted to dump Veronica's dead body in the English Channel.

But what transforms the case from that of a squalid domestic murder into something altogether more electrifying is not so much the horror ofSandra's death is Coles' fascinating recreation of Lucan's disappearance, his journey to Goa, India via a cramped container with its fug of stale air in the storage hold of a cargo ship, and that of his arch nemesis Jimmy Goldsmith who dispatches him with all the indifference of "a schoolboy stamping a spider." Lucan becomes his plaything when Jimmy soon introduces him to hashish and then the very act of stepping into the abyss becomes a total blueprint for the creation of a heroin addict with all of the smoking and then the full-on mainlining.

Constantly speaking in Lucan's voice, Coles' prose is both uncharacteristically lyrical and morbidly penetrating as he cautiously examines Lucan's soulful regrets for Sandra, the awful sight of her tiny body tucked into a US mailbag, and his internal agonies as an outcast, never able to see his three children again, and his drug-fuelled ramblings where he becomes convinced that Goldsmith is constantly out to get him. In fact, Lucan's weary acceptance of his fate, his life as a drug-addled tramp in Goa seems to cast him in an unusually sympathetic light. Invaluable book for anyone interested in democracy
This book provides an innovative framework to understand the evolution of one of the most confusing and frustrating regime types of the last two decades: regimes which hold competitive elections but remain undemocratic in significant ways. They have been called transitional democracies, partial democracies, illiberal democracies, but no category has satisfactorily captured their unique attributes.

Levitsky and Way provide several key theoretical contributions to this area of study.
