As Detailed...
The books arrived on time and in perfect condition.They finished off my collection perfectly.Now, to find time to read...

Great Book!
The characters in this book are so believable, you'll think the author has been crawling around in your mind. Haven't you read or heard something and thought: "That's exactly how I feel, but I just couldn't put it into words?" That idea keeps coming to mind as you read.This guy in the book fits in, but doesn't really fit in. He conforms on the outside--most of the time-but resists conformity on the insideand resents the people he has to get along with.Everybody's pushing and he wants to push back, but doesn't openly-most of the time. Society says: "Get in step. Stay in line." And he does-most of the time.
"But I'm not like the rest," he thinks. Or is he? He can't figure out who he is or what he wants to become.
The story may not grab you at first. Keep going! It's worth the effort.You think nobody ever felt the way you do about growing up?Reading this will change your mind.Another great novel I really suggest is Paul Omeziri's Descent into Illusions. This is I think going to be a classic.

voyage of vengeance
In this the 7 book of mission earth it takes some interesting plot turns. In this book soltan finally manages to escape New York and flee to the safety of sea.Heller is still trying to build his air cleaning plant in Florida.While krak gets closer to finding out that soltan is behind all their misfortunes.This book is one of the best books that I have ever read.If you haven't read the first six books read then before you read this book you will need to understand the complex plot, and they are all relay good books as well.if you are a si fi reader then this is definitely a book for you, but not only si fi fanatics will like it also appeals to all most any taste.

Action-packed and exciting! A real good one!

In `Villiany Victorious' which is Volume 9 of Hubbard's Magnificent `Mission Earth' Dekology, the story returns to the planet Voltar after a dramatic departure from Earth.Criminal Soltan Gris is neutralized, buthis psychotic boss `Lombar Hisst' is back on Voltar running out of controlattepting to seize the control of the Voltar confederacy.He sends a DeathBattalian to Earth and they are turned to molten glass in an awesomeconfrontation.Lunatic PR agent J. Terrible!
This guy really can't write. I've heard so much about Hubbard, so I picked this book up on a whim. It's the worst-written sci-fi book I've ever tried to read. The dialogue is incredibly artificial and the plot is pretty thin.I only managed to get a couple of chapters in. Don't bother.

Funny, Witty, Satirical Psi-Fi
I loved all of these stories. The tapes make great car entertainment. Hubbard has a fantastic sense of humor, witty & intelligent and often edgy. Definitely way ahead of his time - meaining that you'd never expect atraditional psi-fi writer Hubbard's age at the time to write something thisracy and "with-it"!A winner!

A fast, fun read.
I used to think the sex in some of the Mission Earth books was too perverted to be real...and then came the Internet.The Mission Earth series could be subtitled "A Parody of Earth."It is hilarious. Simple and effective help for the student of any age!
This little book is fabulous! It has easy step by step instructions with pictures and a check list to make sure you really GET it. I'm not too proud to use it myself at age 61!!!
This kind of learning tool is much needed in our schools. Why are they not using it? I sure has worked with the children I've helped using it. Guess learning really does start at home, especially if you can find the right tools.
I recommend this for students with problems but also for those who are doing well to KEEP them doing well.

For Children or Adults with learning problems
I used this study method for my children, and it really works. Simple, effective and absolutely workable.My kids ended up with an excellent educution.Be prepared!You will need to get them a dictionary that is simple!But once they can look up word definitions there is no stopping them.I highly recommend the book for parents concerned about their children's education.It also helps kids avoid the pitfalls of falling behind in school.Believe me, your children are smart.It is the teaching method used in schools right now that creates the problem.This book circumvents it and you can use it at home, or if you are home schooling your child(ren).

I bought this book for myself because i have comprehension problems
when reading.
It was a very uplifting and helpful book on Learning How To Learn.
I took notes as I read the book and recorded my drills also.
This book is very quick and easy reading.
I plan to use it with my grandchildren when they become of school
age.
Although this is an elementary book, I would recommend it to anyone
who needs help reading and learning.
I look forward to purchasing more books from the same line.

I think that this is a major breakthrough for learning and should be used in all school curiculums.

I would recommend this book to all parents. Any kid who is struggling in school can learn and apply the techniques of finding "barriers" in his/her study and overcome such barriers. A Piece of Blue Sky
Very informative book on the history of Scientology and the man who piloted the movement. Reads a bit like a textbook and can be a bit dry for my tastes but overall it's a great source of info.

Comprehensive Handbook To A Cult
Author Jon Attack had citied the classic, The Scandal of Scientology, as one reason he had to write this 398-page opus of a book. A Piece of Blue Sky was published in 1990, but despite its age, it is a very revealing, albeit exhaustively jumbled, handbook on the inner workings of Scientology.

Mr. Atack had acquired quite an archive of information at his disposal to present this information to the public. Atack himself had been in Scientology when he was 19 years old. The book starts with him and his beginnings through Scientology, up until his drifting away from the cult in 1984.

He continues by giving you a history of - and a very meticulous one at that -L. Ron Hubbard's beginnings, including the start of Dianetics. We journey along to Hubbard's beginning from birth and childhood, which is very difficult to follow as it becomes clear that Hubbard was a pathological liar.Where his "imagination" begins and the truth ends is truly pondering to follow. We continue to get taken through Scientology itself, and what kind of movement it was and still is.

We can take a gander that Hubbard was not all he had portrayed himself to be. As a science-fiction pulp writer, he was clearly imaginative. He was also very savvy and appeared to create Scientology to make money and to be worshiped.

There is so much information in this book that I needed to take breaks in between. My only complaint would be that it was difficult to follow on occasion as it was sometimes jumbled, but for the most part it was a very informative read. Many of these things have been written in earlier books, but its cohesiveness makes it a needed handbook to guide you through the maze of Scientology.

It is necessary to mention that Scientology had also tried to stop this book from being published. They tried to argue that the book could not be published as it would discourage people from buying the original texts and that it was subject to copyright violation. Scientology did not win this fight however, and it was published with full quotations and all.

Amazon.com had de-listed this book for a bit in 1999, but due to public outcry, had then reversed the decision. I ask you, why, if Scientology is such a pure religion, do they try to ban anything that is written about them? What do they have to hide? Reading books such as this makes it very apparent why.

First half reads like a textbook
This is a great book, but the early portion reads very much like a textbook. Lots of background on scientology, including terms and definitions. The latter portions are more story-like, though more like several short stories strung together than a novel. I found the book fascinating and very informative (and ultimately frightening). Great read for anyone interested in scientology or L. Ron Hubbard. VERY well notated with lots of other resources for research.

Valuable Info. on $cientology
A great primer on the "religion" of $cientology.Inside info provided by former insiders of $cientology.The true story of $cientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, reads like a thrilling novel.It's a fascinating read.But not only entertaining, this book provides great info to innoculate you and your loved ones from the manipulative and coercive ways of the "Church" of $cientology. Inform yourself and your loved ones to avoid the sticky web of $cientology.

I was so facinated by the subject matter and thought that it was written very well.Except that it was dry for most of the middle section of the book. The worst book ever written! Do not buy!
First of all, this isn't even technically a book. It's a pamplet/booklet sold and passed out by members of the Church of Scientology.Now before I get a million angry Scientologist replying to my review please hear me out.I don't personally have anything against the CHURCH except that it does cost a TON of money to actually cross the Bridge.But, that has nothing to do with this book.Truth is I like most of LRH's books and have almost all of them including the Scientology Handbook.I think that like every other religious path on this planet there is some good, some not and it may not click for everyone.But this particular book I felt was a waste of money when I bought it because of how little there actually is inside.As I said this was originally a pamlet/booklet and expanded into a book.

But, not just that I was really dissapointed with the content itself.I read the book after reading Scientology: A new Slant on Life and Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought, two books which I highly recommend, really like and found helpful with LRH's essays on life and how to survive it. I was kind of expecting the same thing from this book but it's more of a common sense primer to society itself which had to have been written for tribal bushmen who don't know how to read in the first place.For instance, one of the steps on the Way to Happiness is to wash your hands regularly and display proper hygiene.That alone was enough for me to toss the book.

If you are interested in this text you should probably visit the way to happiness website or visit/call a mission or COS and order the $5 pamplet rather than pay twenty for the bloated version.But hey, that's just my opinion.As I said though the other books (Fundamentals of thought/A new slant on Life) I really do recomend.

And just to clear things up, because for some odd reason there's a battle on this website between reviewers of Scientology/Dianetics Materials between Scientologist and Non-members, I am not promoting the above books because they promote Scientology, I just really think LRH hit the nail head on with those books and the values/thoughts they promote.Also, I am not a scientologist so please no attacks there either.I just think people could be more open minded and pick up a little bit here and there...think of religion like a buffet.Take what you like and what you don't, leave it, but still respect it enough for others to take.

Why You Should Check it Out
I read this book and changed certain things I was doing in my life... I had wondered why I didn't feel "happy".Interestingly, it wasn't because I had "issues" from OUTSIDE me... they were things that I was doing that made me unhappy.Many people want more complicated answers to the problems of living life, but there is no doubt that if you read the book and do what it says, you will have a happier life, as it is all about how you approach life and respond to those in your family, how to operate at work and even politically who should be supported.

It would be pretty difficult to disagree with any of the advice in the book!And it helped me to resolve certain family conflicts that were unnecessary.

I highly recommend reading the book and going ahead and using it.It makes you feel like a million bucks!

WHY WOULD THIS BE THE WAY TO HAPPINESS!!!
I picked up this book initially as it was sitting on the coffee table at a friend's house. He said I could borrow it, so I did.

It sat around at home for a couple of weeks more, looking impressive but unread.

Finally, on a late afternoon when I had nothing much to do, I picked it up and looked it over. I was surprised and quite pleased at my discovery.

This book may represent the first secular moral code based wholly on common sense.It was written by L. Ron Hubbard as an individual work, rather than as part of Scientology or Dianetics.

Hubbard says, "There is little joy to be found in gloomy, restrained solemnity.When some of old made it seem that to practice virtue required a grim and dismal sort of life, they tended to infer that all pleasure came from being wicked: nothing could be further from the facts.Joy and pleasure do not come from immorality!Quite the reverse!Joy and pleasure arise only in honest hearts: the immoral lead unbelievably tragic lives filled with suffering and pain.The human virtues have little to do with gloominess.They are the bright face of life itself."

This book is a treasure.

And I thank Mr. Hubbard from the bottom of my heart.

Perfect for kids
I used this book when raising my daughter.It's a simple non-denominational code of ethics - very logical; something you would think everyone should or does know.But - the world isn't in very good shape right now, so these simple concepts are obviously not being used by enough people.I wanted my daughter to have something she could understand that made sense and gave her stable points to view things from.She loved it.You can tell someone - "Don't Steal" - everyone knows that.. but do they understand what happens when you do? What are the personal consequences of it?If one truly understands that, it goes beyond some "order" by an adult - and becomes a concept my daughter could fully understand and think with.With that she could personally make the decision for herself.That was 18 years ago.I now have a grown daughter who is incredibly ethical, responsible and very very happy.So am I.

"I am not interested in wog morality." L. Ron Hubbard, 1969
L. Ron Hubbard defined "wog" as a "garden variety humanoid." In Scientology a "wog" is anyone who is not a Scientologist. (See the Scientology 'Tech Dictionary'.) Hubbard explained in an August 1969 Policy Letter, 'Discipline, SPs and Admin', that he "was not interested in wog morality."

Only a year earlier, Hubbard had written in his 'Fair Game Law' policy (google to find out more), that dissenters or critics of Scientology should, whenever possible, be "tricked, sued, lied to, or destroyed." Shortly thereafter, Hubbard wrote, in his (confidential) 'Battle Tactics' Policy, that Scientologists should "create a frenzy of hate against the enemy."

It was out of this deranged mindset that came the programs, directed by L. Ron Hubbard, that led to the FBI issuing search warrants in July 1977 (Google, Paulette Cooper, also Snow White, Scientology), revealing, shockingly, massive illegality conducted by Scientology.

L. Ron Hubbard's wife was sent to federal prison as a result, and L. Ron Hubbard went into hiding, letting his wife take the rap.

Late in 1979, by federal court order, thousands of previously secret Scientology documents were made available for public scrutiny. These documents revealed L. Ron Hubbard's extensive criminal orders, and an entire "tech," devised by Hubbard, to covertly attack and destroy "enemies."

Suddenly, there was a huge public relations problem for Scientology. Their founder was now recognized as a sociopath and a criminal. What to do?

Well, L. Ron Hubbard decided that he was going to become the expert on "morality," and write a "Common Sense Moral Code" called 'The Way to Happiness'. This would "prove" that he, the founder of Scientology, was not a criminal or a sociopath, and would handle the PR problem caused by the recent court ordered document release.

Better than Indiana Jones
This book tells the story of L. Ron Hubbard's search and discovery of locations he frequented in past lives about 2,000 years ago.As he spent time in each location his memory became sharper and sharper and he was able to exactly pinpoint specific buildings and structures and send his crew to find them without him personally going ashore.It is a story of adventure in 1968 and 2,000 years ago.He never repeated this activity and it was the adventure of lifetimes for 40 crew members aboard the "Avon River" as it roamed the Mediterranean for 5 weeks in the Spring of 1968.It is out of print so get your copy soon.

The usual mix of interesting stories
I'm a regular reader of WOTF books, and a contest contributor.I like these because it's a chance to read some new ideas and some new points of view. ...It's a chance, sometimes I see something new and interesting, and I'm very pleased when I do.

Here is my assessment of the WOTF 25 crop:

Garden of Tian Zi

The strong part of this story is its exotic setting, western China. The weak part is the pretty standard story formula. We have evil corporate monopolist types chasing down an entrepreneurial go-getter who is doing his enterprising for the rebels.He has to do his work, raising genetically modified frogs, under cover. It's never clear why being in this remote location is going to offer any safety, and, as the story unfolds, it doesn't.So, it's an action-love-spy story, and not too special from my point of view.

The Shadow Man

This story has an interesting twist.It takes some contemporary Japanese urban legend -- that the "shadows" of people created by the Hiroshima atomic blast shelter their spirits -- and weaves it into an interesting tale. The tale centers around protagonist conflict with some ho-hum gangster types, but the ending twist is good enough that I liked this one.

Life in Steam

The setting for this story is exotic -- the firmament is a for-real ceiling, and there are ships that wander from place to place on this ceiling and visit colonies of humans. That's the interesting part.The story part is a science versus religion conflict as told from the point of view of a conflicted Grand Inquisitor, and it's not as exotic.

The Assignment of Runner ETI

This is yet another death race story.In this case we have young lady cross-country marathon runners who are running to win money for various charities.They run through various obstacles, and betrayals, and... ho-hum.I could not suspend disbelief at the obstacles they encountered, and the twist at the end did not work for me at all.

The Candy Store

A mix of having the townspeople of nearly ghost town Old West town meeting a Mephistophelian magic wish-giver who sets up a magic candy shop on Main Street overnight.The people of the town are not completely amazed by this turn of events because they pack some magic as well.

The story has its moments.

Risque Man

Risque Man I liked a lot.It's my kind of story because it deals with the ramifications of a new technology.In this case we have some effective computer-aided personal forecasting that works well enough that the government gets interested... and then things get screwed up.

Gray Queen Homecoming

This one set up an interesting exotic setting that is similar to ones I write about: we have a slower-than-light space ship returning home after an interstellar journey, and a lot of time has passed on the home world. In this case the ship is crewed by only a single person and the ship's computer.When they get home they find their world has completely changed, and not for the better for them.

I like the setting and I liked the story. But since I have written about his concept myself, and thought a lot about it, I found this one not well thought through -- their final tragedy should have been avoided.

The Dizzy Bridge

This has some interesting characterization in a different style of fantasy setting. The characters have unconventional magical powers and the setting is not a common one.That I liked.But by the end I didn't find I was relating much to the characters, so this did not end up one of my favorites.

Gone Black

The setting of this story was easy to relate to -- a secret base on a distant planet where a high value military prisoner was being kept. And the story flowed well. I would have liked it a lot, but the motivations of the various players kept me scratching my head, so it came out as average likable for me.

The Reflection of Memory

This story has a nicely exotic setting. I liked the use of magic in it and enjoyed the first half a lot.But the second half gets contrived, and it ends up average instead of really good.

This story has an interesting premise -- a woman who literally lives just one day at a time, and then manages to change that routine -- but it's not well thought out, so it went from good to average.

The Farthest Born

This story has an interesting premise -- trying to start a new colony of humans on a distant planet... without sending humans there.Instead of sending humans, the humans are grown there.Another interesting catch in this is that there is instantaneous communication with Earth, so Avatar movie-style avatars can be used to raise the children.

So far, so good... but then it gets conventional. The kids face lions and tigers and bears, Oh My!, and the communication link with Earth breaks down so the kids are on their own....these people set up no fall-back for a communications failure?


In sum, this edition of WOTF is the usual mix of some very interesting stories, some stories with interesting beginnings but ho-hum execution, and some that left me scratching my head as to what the editor saw in them.

On the whole, a worthwhile read if you like stories that are new and different.

I love Writers of the Future - short and sweet!!!
I love Writers of the Future!!! Not just the stories themselves but the purpose behind it. It's the biggest writing and drawing contest in the world for science fiction and fantasy and it's helped new writers and artists internationally in many ways. It's in my view very humanitarian.

Most of the stories I really enjoyed in the previous volumes. To be honest, I have not read them all, but this particular volume must be the best so far - volume 25. My favorite in volume 25 is the "The Shadow Man" which is a story based in the orients and the Hiroshima. I would recommend Writers of the Future to anybody because you can get more than one good story in one sitting. It's perfect for reluctant readers, military, aspiring writers and of course anyone that wants good original content. SCT

Best Writers of the Future, I've read yet
I loved this edition of Writers of the Future.I read every story front to back and the art work was fabulous.This volume had very interesting stories with very interesting topics that brought up interesting points about life:Compassion, Endurance, Remembrance, Love, Magic and many other factors.I highly recommend buying and reading this edition of Writers of the Future.

Good Stories From New Writers
Writer's of the Future introduces short stories from new science fiction and fantasy writers. I enjoyed most of the stories, although there was one or two and I didn't care for. Some of the better stories were "Garden's of Tian Zi," "The Shadow Man," The Assignment of Runner ETI," "Gone Black" and "The Farthest Born." Not a cut-and-paste job
When Madman or Messiah first came out, I thumbed through it and noticed the long quotations by people other than the author. I figured the book was just some structureless compilation of ex-scientologist's little stories.(Tilman Hausherr, in his well written review in this thread, sees the book this way.) For years, I didn't bother to read it.Recently, I picked it up again, after having read many other books critical of Scientology. I now think my earlier view of Madman or Messiah was mistaken.There is a substantial chronological, autobiographical structure to the book, in which the long quotations from other ex-scientologists play a supportive role. The richness of detail and the clarity of presentation make this book one of the best of the many good books by ex-Scientologists about Scientology.

A Rare Jewel, Indeed!
I was never too interested in Scientology itself, but L. Ron Hubbards seemingly mysterious, and certainly almost magical, rise to fame intrigued me greatly. Whatever your opinion about L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, one thing is for certain: this guy knew something about the way the universe and reality works to come together to form events and circumstances that few know. Hubbard's overwhelming personal success, in the face of overwhelming opposition (I mean, look who he took on, the United States government --- and never went to prison), proves what I am saying.
This book gave me --- more than any other I have found --- what I was looking for: details, connections, explanations (ever how thin), insights, into the possible ways that he was able to do this. While I am normally very practical, realistic, and objective ( I hope!) about dealing with such things as the possibility that there is truly such a workable application and remedy to reality as "magic" --- and by using this word, I mean quite literally, the ability to change circumstances in accordance with one's will --- I have myself stumbled across some applicable, but nevertheless, strange, things that certainly work in amazing ways to change and alter reality in dramatic and undeniably magical ways. Looking for connections and explanations to what I, too, had discovered about the nature of reality was what drove me to ply through this book. The hints and allusions that the book gives, verified my own suspicions and reassured me of what I was dealing with.

Used to promote Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard.
"Presents" L. Ron Hubbard, and the "writers of the future" are secondary. Too bad the talent of these writers ends up being soiled by association with Hubbard's name.

Offers of cash "awards," plus publication, is too much to resist for some. Still, they should have known better.

If you are thinking that this is just a collection of stories from the Writers of the Future contest, then you are mistaken.As the cover indicates, there are 13 stories plus 4 essays that are included in this almost 500 page book.As we'd expect from a contest under Hubbard's name, one of the essays is by him.The 13 stories are quite varied and I won't repeat the brief introduction to the plots done by another reviewer.I liked 4 pieces enough to consider finding other writing by their authors."Home Grown" by William Brown, "Like Iron Unicorns" by Paul D. Batteiger, "Guildmaster" by Dan Dysan, and "The Quality of Wetness" by Ilsa J. Bick.I thought these storylines were original but the characters were familiar enough to really hook me. "Atlantis Ohio" by Mark Siegel was a cool idea but the story just goes on and one far too long.So if you like hard science fiction, social fiction, or alternative pasts or presents, there is some story in here you may enjoy.So why only 4 stars?Frankly I think the essays could be left out, the price dropped a bit on the book, and it would be a much better buy overall. People who want insight into the craft or writing and direction toward publication can get a book geared toward that.

Great stories and novellas, with amazing range
What I like best about this annual antho is the diversity of the stories. Many anthologies stick to only one genre, or even one sub-genre, like Hard SF or Historical Fantasy. The "WotF" books always run the gamut, and this year is no exception. Each story packs a wallop and sticks in the reader's mind for days to come.

My personal favorites were:

William Brown's "Home Grown" - a Bradbury-esque, near-future tale about a robotic butler who has the glimmer of emotion, especially for the beautiful Dryad in the garden outside.

Toby Buckell's "In Orbite Mediavil" - An alternate history/fantasy of Columbus' ships taking a crack at an earth that's not quite flat, but not exactly round, either.

Michael Jasper's "Mud and Salt" - A near-future story of three men hunting an alien, it deals unflinchingly with a young man's first contact with an alien.The changes that meeting brings about are subtle, yet well-done.

Melissa Yuan-Innes' "Skin Song" - A deft fantasy edging on horror about a med student who can hear "songs" from simply touching the skin of others. The story gets really interesting when the med student enters the cadaver lab...

Leslie Walker's "As the Crow Flies" - A lyrical ghost story that forces the reader to figure out the rules as he or she reads. Nicely done.

Jeff Rutherford's "Daimon! Daimon!" - A classic horror story of demons and blues music, made even better by its historical context and swamp setting.

Other highlights include Gary Murphy's hard SF tale "Pulling Up Roots," Dan Barlow's time travel/comedy "A Conversation with Schliegelman," and Paul Martens' darkly humorous science fiction story "Your Own Hope." The collection also contains three longer novellas, "Atlantis, Ohio" by Mark Siegel, "Guildmaster" by Dan Dysan, and "The Quality of Wetness" by Ilsa Bick.

Contest rules are also included at the end of the book. I recommend any new writer sending their stories to the contest -- the diversity and the range of the stories make this anthology one to watch for, and the writers in this year's collection will definitely be names we'll all hear from again!

Imaginative and unexpectedly solid writing
The four first place stories alone were worth the price of the book.They were highly creative and fascinating.Easy to believe these authors will be well-known in the SF/F field soon enough.

The Conditions
This is A great ethics book, not just for scientologist but for everyone. It explains justice and ethics and why they are different. It also talks about "SP" or suppresive persons, and how they are detrimental to someones sanity and ambitions.

But what I Found most helpful, were the conditions. LRH explains that at any time someone who is out-ethics (doing unethical things) is in A certain condition, and they can redeem themselves from these conditions, and get ethics back in, by following a certain formula for each condition.

Very helpful!
This book has been a useful tool for me in my business. It shows how to track statistics, and how to evaluate those statistics.

Once the statistics have been examined, then specific tools are given to increase them over time.

My business has increased by 8 times since implementing these tools! I am no longer in a mystery about how to increase business, when to promote, when to cut back... the formulas given are clear, and easy to implement, AND THEY WORK!

I am a VERY satisfied customer!

Difference between ethics and morals
This book clarifies the difference between morals and ethics -- what we do because we think doing them makes us "good" and those things we do because they lead to a better existence for ourselves and our fellows.

We don't live in a vacuum, despite what the materialists might think. This book is how to live well ourselves - without hurting those around us.

This is a revolutionary approach to the subject. I wish more business leaders would become familiar with these concepts! It would make a better world for all...

Very interesting book
L Ron Hubbard is possibly the most controversial man of the 21st century.
I read this book while researching into supernatual phenonema like near-death-experiences, psychics, out of body experiences, as Hubbard made several claims in this area.
While the book doesn't talk about that, or Scientology techniques, it is an interesting read. You won't find philosophical arguments here - the emphasis is on workability. Hubbard's philosophy (which is a version of utilitarianism based on survival) is intuitively a better ethical philopsophy than anything I studied at Oxford.
I also gained an understanding of why Scientology charges money for its services, and found Hubbard's arguments about why people attack Scientology interesting (though I'm not in a position to judge them).
The book is also a good management book - on par at least with the One Minute Manager.
Hubbard was an intelligent and interesting character. If he was a charlatan then was certainly a complete genius who continues to deceive today.
On the other hand his principles seem sound and aimed at improving the human condition.

People that don't bother to look for the truth
I Have read through this book countless times and have found it to be an essential tool for living in this society. The book is absolutely invaluble, and anyone who thinks otherwise is not nuts, they simply haven't looked at the bigger picture. Most people that slam Scientology aren't wrong from thier point of view, but they fail to look at everything there is to look at, which consequently makes them look rather silly and disappoints me in that our society commonly slams what they do not understand. Essential knowledge you cant be without
This is fundimanetal, and important data, anyone can use to improve thmeselfs and deal with people around them.
How would you like to be able to handle that obnoxious co-worker? that rude salesperson, or even a family member.
Find out what chronic tone people operate in every day, and how you can be cause over them, and help them too.
People who give false data, and negative viewpoints on this technology have something to hide, and are often distructive to society.
Find out about those type of people by reading "overcoming ups and downs in life" also by L. Ron Hubbard. This will compliment the Tone Scale Booklet

Innovation and Observations
This is a hands-on utility manual for anyone interested in people. It is a totally workable and useful booklet which, when applied to real people, in real life, with people we meet and come in contact with everyday, we are given a tool not only for understanding people's emotional behavior, but it allows us to interact powerfully with people and communicate with them in ways that make a difference. A must-read, and a must-apply easy-to-grasp manual of human relationships.

Practical
If you want the truth, here it is. Swallow hard, open your eyes, and look: this is how things work. These basics are very easy to read, and open up worlds of practical application for you to discover on your own. Make sure you do not go past any misunderstood words. Very simply, the data in this booklet came to light after hundreds of thousands of years or religion, philosophy, and science. It is not an add-on, but a resolution of questions and problems - do not treat it lightly.

How to deal with others
This little book has been really helpful to me in dealing with others.

It explains where people are at emotionally - how to tell where they are at - and how to get your communication across to them.

I took communications courses in college, and this information has been far more valuable to me, in terms of practical use.

If you have ever experienced trying to communicate with another person - and ending up feeling like understanding just didn't come about, no matter how hard you tried - then get this booklet! It explains why this happens, and how to overcome the barriers. It's universal, too - you don't need to give someone a lengthy personality quiz to understand them better! Just by observing the person you can figure out how to communicate with them. It's a gem of a book!

A book based on Hubbard's psychological dogma
This book contains several methods of self-administered psychotherapy invented by pulp fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.Some of the methods may assist some people, however Hubbard pretends to know what ails the human race and rants about that in most chapters of this book.Hubbard fails to grasp that people are individuals with individual issues and using this or that method will "fix" everybody up has never proved itself in reality.
If I had to choose between doing the exercises in this book and joining the scientology cult, I would choose this book.But, the more sensible people will avoid doing either.

One of the greatest books ever written
I am only half way through this book, and already I have read more truth here than I've ever read elsewhere. And believe me, I've read all the self help books. L. Ron Hubbard is a true genius and certainly one of the most important teachers in this history of mankind, period. Get this book, it will change everything.

Great Techniques
I used the techniques from one chapter to quickly recover from a fall on concrete, where I hit my head, and a personal sorrow.I handled the physical aspects separately from the fall and on the memory of both was able to resolve the pain and sorrow so now I can think about it easily--as easily as normal memories.Thank you, L. Not for the faint of heart
This book is very helpful but not necessarily a walk in the park to use.It's all about weeding through various things that make life difficult and how you can work your way to a better state of mind.You have to be willing to work for it and if you follow the steps in the book, you get amazing results.If you don't do what it says in the book or only do it half-heartedly, you really don't get much out of it.I give 5 stars because it really does deliver.In using the book, sometimes you have to examine things about yourself that aren't so easy to face.Once you push through those things using the book, it's pretty beneficial. ...
