5-0 out of 5 stars A good look at Constitutional erosion.
This is a great book to show how we have strayed from the constitution, and how it has affected us. All three branches of our government have been greedy with power, and there is no stopping them; or is there a way after all. This book does give a solution to make the powers that be accountable to the people, but it will take a lot of work. One thing I will note is that sometimes we like to villify a democrat or republican because we disagree with them. But this book is excellent at showing that it doesn't matter who is in office, they are all breaking the rules and ignoring the constitution. It gives you a better perspective on the fact that they all are wrong, and we need to get the government in a place where they listen to the people again. Recently you can see how this affects us, look at how they voted on healthcare reform. It was done in a way so they would pass the bill no matter what the people said. This is a dangerous practice. I believe they could find a way to do anything they want regardless of what the rest of us think. We need to get the government back under the control of the people and the constitution, and this book shows us a way. This was written by Veronica McCormack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Politicians beware!
Politicians beware!Until now, books on corruption in government describe the problem and state change must happen. After Patrick Henry describes the problem from a historical, political, philosophical and economic viewpoint merging different themes into one common denominator. The flexibility of constitutional law facilitating a constitutional amendment is the author's solution.

The author, Dr. Herrick, weaves history and current events into a web of knowledge never before defined - it allows the reader to focus in on the future utilizing the knowledge of past and current government doctrine.

Challenging the intellectual, informing the uninformed, and giving notice to corrupt government officials, After Patrick Henry should be on the bookshelves of all university libraries, as well as public libraries and private readers. The compelling, intriguing and, at times, challenging nature of the author's words make this text appropriate for all to read.

It is without reservation that I recommend After Patrick Henry to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars How "We the People" can regain our sovereignty under the US Constitution.
("After Patrick Henry: A Second American Revolution"New book by Neal Q. Herrick)
This book is an eye-opener; it is long overdue."We the People" should impeach officers of the nation's Executive Branch when they usurp the powers of Congress, especially the war-making powers."We the People" should impeach Congressional representatives when they abdicate their Constitutional duties, especially when it comes to starting (and ending) wars. The impeachment process needs real teeth. This monumental book shows the way for 'Us the People' to regain our sovereignty from the usurpers and abdicators - who presently have earned-approval-ratings of about 20%."After Patrick Henry" is a well-written, thoroughly-researched and powerful page-turner - quoting and naming the guilty and offering hope and a plan for Constitutional justice. ... Product Description

This deeply researched and abundantly illustrated study catalogs all of Latrobe's domestic commissions, offering an authoritative treatment of the concepts, designs, and unique interior and exterior features of his houses.

Benjamin Henry Latrobe, an English émigré and the first professional architect of international stature to practice in the United States, invented an American house type for the new democratic republic. Calling upon his diverse education and travel experiences in Europe and his training with eminent architects and engineers in London, Latrobe responded to American manners and climate by producing what he called his "rational house," an application of Enlightenment thinking to the design of a proper living environment for the citizens of the world's most recent democracy.

Establishing a new benchmark in Latrobe studies, Michael W. Fazio and Patrick A. Snadon extend their analysis to Latrobe's training and career in England and Europe, his principles of design, and his methods of architectural practice. The authors trace the evolution of his design thinking through analytical essays on all of his major domestic commissions and conclude with a summary discussion of his position within the international architectural scene, his design theories, the integration of interior design and engineering into his architectural practice, and the preservation of his houses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Domestic Architecture of Benjamin Latrobe
This is the single-most comprehensive study of the domestic architecture of Benjamin Latrobe that I have seen.Latrobe is possibly more widely known for his civic projects such as the waterworks in Philadelphia, the Latrobe Gate at the Washington, DC Navy Yard, the Basilica in Baltimore, and surely St. John's Church on Lafayette Swuare in Washington, DC.However, only a small number of his domestic projects remain. Thus, the massive amount of research that was done to capture the details of all his domestic projects is of great value to architectural scholars and lay people alike. The authors have done for this area of Latrobe's work what Talbot Hamlin in general for Greek Revival architecture in America 65 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive 'must' for any serious college-level architectural history holding.
College-level architectural collections serious about their in-depth coverage will want to look at the weighty The Domestic Architecture of Benjamin Henry Latrobe. It catalogs all of Latrobe's domestic commissions from interiors to exteriors, and even includes analysis of his training and career in both England and Europe, his design principles, and his methods. Analytical essays accompany sketches and vintage black and white photos, surveying changes in his thinking and approach, considering his contemporaries and influences, and examining the preservation of his structures. A comprehensive 'must' for any serious college-level architectural history holding.

5-0 out of 5 stars definitive study of early major American architect
THE DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE OF BENJAMIN HENRY LATROBE by Michael W. Fazio and Patrick A. Snadon. Johns Hopkins U. Press, Baltimore, MD; www.press.jhu.edu. 2006. 769+xx pp. $75.00 hardcover, 9" x 11", ISBN 0-8028-8204-8. maps on endpages, color/black-and-white photographs, illustrations, architectural diagrams, notes, index.
Nothing is spared in the way of breadth and depth of scholarship, nor in the way of production quality--for a definitive study of this important, but generally overlooked, American architect of the late 1700s into the early 1800s, the early period of the American Republic. A leading architect popular with the English royalty and gentry in their adaptations in a growing democratic society, Latrobe attracted the interest and commissions of the old and newly wealthy in the United States in the decades after the Revolutionary War for design of homes with many similarities to those he had done for the upper classes in his native England. And he attracted interest from government officials wishing to build impressive buildings representing the pride, the values, and the ambitions of the new Republic. Latrobe's architectural principles and designs went far in America as they had earlier in England because they characterized what he called his "rational house" based on ideas of the Enlightenment partly originating in England and embraced by America's Founding Fathers in their creation of the basics of the American political system and its institutions. Fazio is a professor at Mississippi State U.'s School of Architecture; Snadon is a professor of interior design at the School of Architecture and Interior Design at the U. of Cincinnati. The abundant biographical, critical, and analytical text with the hundreds of illustrations of all scales of architectural works are peerlessly informative standing alone. But also they work to render the authors' revisionist perspective that "perhaps only Thomas Jefferson...held a panoramic view over the international architectural scene comparable to Latrobe." ... Product Description
A prominent religious scholar who isn't afraid to shake our assumptions and probe our imaginations, Patrick Henry has written a guide for the "ironic Christian"-one who strives to integrate truth with faith, to let an expanding knowledge of the world translate into an expanded understanding of God. Drawing on the works of a diverse group of writers and thinkers, from C.S. Lewis and Julian of Norwich to Anne Sexton, Yogi Berra, and Dr. Seuss, he explores the ways in which we can maintain our belief in a God defined by mysteriousness. With humor, humility, and courage, he asks us to join him in this spiritual quest-and in the dizzying, thrilling leaps that faith invites.

"Witty...intelligent...[a] field guide for those who long to integrate their faith with their understanding of modern science, contemporary social theory, and everyday life."-Kathleen Norris

"This is a thinking Christian's book, a series of essays on questions with no easy answers...uncommonly candid and well-written."-Dallas Morning News

"As in The Canterbury Tales, the reader will meet an uncommon mix of seekers....The blend of the spiritual with the rational will delight many readers, some of whom may meet a God full of surprises."-Library Journal

"I'm happy to report that I've found the third in a series of recently published books that takes up the study of God and his grace and does it in a readable and inspiring fashion. (The other two are Amazing Grace by Kathleen Norris and Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott.)"-Jon Hassler, The Minneapolis Pioneer PressAmazon.com Review
Patrick Henry is a scholar of early Christianity who taught atSwarthmore College and now runs an ecumenical institute in Minnesota, yet he can't say exactly what his book's title means. In othercircumstances, imprecise authorial intent might be annoying. But inThe Ironic Christian's Companion, such imprecision is actuallyrefreshing. And even though Henry can't quite bring himself to saywhat "ironic Christianity" is, he's quite articulate whendescribing what it's like. Ironic Christians, he says, have "aninstinctive, abiding suspicion of no-loose- ends answers." They"inhabit a world that is more 'as if' than 'just like,' a worldfashioned by a God of surprises."

Henry, who writes like a grandfatherly KathleenNorris, calls his grab- bag book of autobiographical sketches, literary anecdotes, and spiritual meditations a "field guide" forChristians who seek amazing expressions of grace. With passages suchas the following, Henry begins to build a reputation as a latter-dayAudubon of the spirit:

Over and over again grace has come off as irony: anoff-balance deflating of my pride, sometimes as funny as vaudevilleslapstick; a gentle dismantling of my despair (when I'm reallyhopeless nothing is scarier than hope, so grace has to be indirect, sneaky; clarity when I'm too confused and confusion when I'm tooclear.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Ironic Christian's Companion
It's somewhat entertaining.Perhaps the ideal book for those who are of a liberal bent and who pursue "Christianity Lite" and enjoy pschobabble.I found very little solid foundation based upon Bible scripture. On the other hand, Mr. Henry provides us with much worthwhile food for thought.

2-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was an "ironic Christian" until I read this book
Patrick Henry never actually defines what an "Ironic Christian"is, but it basically seems to be a Christian who happily lives inambiguity, somewhere in the nether region that exists between totalskepticism and absolute certainty. So far, so good. Not everything can betied up in a neat little package like a TV show that ties up all loose endsin one hour's time. The Christian life (even a life lived outsideChristianity) is full of surprises and wonder, and the fact that Dr. Seusscan speak to a life of faith every bit as much as, say, St. Augustine, isnothing new or shocking to me. Much of what Henry has to say in this bookis valuable as far as re-thinking many of our assumptions. But his embraceof philosophies that are detrimental to Christian faith, such as radicalfeminism (as characterized by his defense of the reprehensible"Re-Imaging Conference") and religious pluralism makes mehesitate to give whole-hearted approval of this book. If I have to be onthe left wing of Christianity to be an "Ironic Christian", Iguess I'm not one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book highly audience dependent
The primary thesis of this book - that a Christian has not logical certainity but must balance opposing views - was a suprise to me.Not because it was new but rather that it was to me self-evident.For example,I had been taught with regards to God's omniscience and man's freewill thatthe two concepts framed a mystery we could not understand but could perhapspull the frame together a bit to point at the truth we cannot fullyknow.

I was similarly caught off-guard by the seeming suprise with whichthe author confronted the myriad of world calendars - Jewish, Islamic, Thaietc. The effects on one's Christianity of either assuming the 2nd comingis near or that it is far off in cosmological time had interest.

Of moreinterest to me, is the author's growth in understanding the issues relatedto gender based language.

If one has a faith based on certainities, ifone has not confronted the issues with which the author deals in auniversal and transcultural way, then this book has a great deal to offer. It will help place your faith in the real world - with all the real wordmessiness.

If one has a faith based on uncertainities, thought out inuniversal, transcultural and across multiple faith, then this book has agreat deal to offer in learning how the other side thinks and grows.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contradictory Philosophy
This book is a continuous barrage of opinions from Patrick Henry, whose philosophy seems to be that "nothing is certain except the fact that nothing is certain," which is intellectual relativism. The good thing about the book is its style. As a sort of journal of lessons learned in life, it would be interesting even to someone who disagrees. I would like to see more books out there that take that approach, but I hope that future authors view their work as an addition to the existing 2000 years of Christianity, rather than a modification of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming A Born-Again Reader
As a college professor who teaches courses in Christianity and Islam and as a Presbyterian Minister, I have read a wide variety of books on Christian theology and spirituality. There is no work which I have readthat addresses therelationship between the life of the spirit and themind better than Henry's _Ironic Christian's Companion_.He lucidlycombines his personal experiences as a Christian and his life-longintellectual interests in crafting a book which addresses some of thedeepest concerns that people have in leading their lives. In a thoughtfuland nuanced yet very direct manner Henry shares his thoughts on issues asdiverse as death, suicide, divorce, friendships, romance, beauty, time, place, paying attention and the processes involved in finding meaning inthe most difficult of life's circumstances. One riveting aspect of thebook is that it resists simple answers to life's complex questions.The_Ironic Christian's Companion_ is not a ''how-to'' or ''self-help'' bookwhich attempts to provide a simple solution to life's hardships. Rather, itinvites readers to raise new questions about their position in the universeand provides them with a rich set of suggestions regarding how they canbegin viewing their humanity and their relationships with the Divinedifferently. The fact that Henry handles observations about life's meaningfrom cab-drivers on an equal footing as those from Pope John Paul II isindicative of the freshness in his approach. During the past several years,I have been very embarassed by the narrowness and myopic simple-mindednessof books authored by various Christian writers. The _Ironic Christian'sCompanion's_ attention to life's multifaceted ambiguities and itspropensity to evoke novel perspectives about some of the deepest mysterieswe face make it a sophisticated and straightforward volume for religiousand non-religious persons alike. It is one of the few works that I wouldrecommend with equal confidence to Christians and non-Christians alike. ... Product Description
The Book of Genesis is foundational reading for the Christian, concerned as it is with the origins of our race and the beginnings of salvation history. Its opening pages provide the theological suppositions of the entire biblical story: Creation, especially that of man in God's image, the structure of time, man's relationship to God, the entrance of sin into the world, and God s selection of a specific line of revelation that will give structure to history. Early Christian writers such as St. Paul saw no dichotomy between the writings of the Law, of which Genesis is the beginning, and the Gospel. Rather, the Gospel is the key to understanding the Law. In Creation and the Patriarchal Histories, Fr. Reardon shows clearly how the proper understanding of Creation and the Fall informs all of Christian doctrine, and how the narratives of the patriarchs from Noah to Joseph pave the way for the salvation history that continues in Exodus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars deep, reflective consideration
Patrick Henry Reardon addresses each chapter of Genesis with deep reflection.Since Orthodox tradition sees everything in scripture reflecting something of Jesus and Christology (that is what I understood from his introduction, anyway), deep, soul-changing thoughts engage us as we read this book.He doesn't embroil himself, for example, in the debate between a literal vs. evolutionary understanding of creation.Instead, he looks at what nuances are told which reveal something more about Christ or man or the relationship between God and man.I'm not Orthodox, yet I am so enriched by reading this perspective.I'd recommend this and probably others by Reardon for those wishing to stretch themselves in new ways.Biblically sound, yet offering fresh insights -- as old as Wisdom itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom and True Faith Abounds in this Short Work
I had the great pleasure of hearing Patrick Henry Reardon give a presentation to lay-Christians on prayer, the Psalms, and the importance of a Christocentric devotional life. After listening to his presentation, the depth of his wisdom, and his strong devotion to a life of Scripture and prayer, I decided to purchase his reflections on the book of Genesis.

I am not disappointed. In this brief devotional book, Reardon goes through the book of Genesis, chapter-by-chapter, and provides the reader with deep devotional thoughts on each.At times, he provides thoughts on the chapter as a whole and its place within the Genesis narrative. At other times, Reardon limits himself to only a small section of the chapter. At other times still, Reardon's focus is on later persons' use of the material (e.g. the Israelites at the time of the Exodus or the Church).

Throughout, Reardon is highly engaging. He treats each Biblical individual as an old friend with whom he is intimately acquainted, and not as a cold, distant person with an unpronounceable name about whom we know nothing. The narrative of the text is artistic and contemplative as Reardon talks up to the reader, treating him as a beloved friend. Also (and most importantly), throughout this work, Reardon keeps Christ at the center of his thought; from reflections on the Fall to the Flood to the many genealogies to Melchizedek to Judah to Joseph, Christ is always at the first consideration.

It should be noted that the text of Genesis is not reprinted in this book. While there may be an annoyance for the reader in having to use two books at once, this slight inconvenience is well-worth the effort.

This book is recommended most highly; please journey through Genesis with this wise and faithful guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the first book of the Bible
Excellent overview with specific points that bring unity to the whole of the law and the prophets.Short book, but much to meditate on.Pithy.
I would recommend this book to non-Orthodox as well as Orthodox. The writing is easy to understand and would be an excellent compliment to personal bible study, as well as providing fresh words for any evangelical pastor's next sermon on Genesis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who wants to truly understand the early Old Testament
The Book of Genesis is a story all Christians know. "Creation and Patriarchal Histories" is a closer examination of the first book of the Holy Bible, and how it reflects onto Christianity as a whole. Drawing upon the scholarship of Orthodox Christian leaders to discuss and educate readers on the history of creation, "Creation and the Patriarchal Histories" breaks down the story into segments. Covering the earliest creation, and the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and other legendary biblical patriarchs, "Creation and the Patriarchal Histories" is a must for anyone who wants to truly understand the early Old Testament. ...
