Product Description
Through her research on twins and the genetic components of aggression, scientist Jeannie Ferrami makes a startling discovery. Using a restricted FBI database, she finds two young men who appear to be identical twins: Steve, a law student, and Dennis: a convicted murderer. Yet they were born on different days, to different mothers, in hospitals hundreds of miles apart.

As Ferrami delves into their backgrounds, she unwittingly locks horns with some of the most powerful forces in America, including the university where she works, The New York Times, even the Pentagon.

What secret has Ferrami uncovered? Can she trust her boss and mentor, or must she put her life in the hands of Steve Logan, the twin she finds herself falling in love with--even though he's surrounded by intrigue and suspicion? But one thing is certain: There are those who will stop at nothing to keep their chilling conspiracy in the shadows. . . . Amazon.com Review
Identical twins have been the storyteller's friend since Romantimes. Master-scribbler Ken Follett does the arrangement one better inhis latest yarn, The Third Twin. The heroine, Jeannie Ferrami,is a young professor at Jones Falls University (JFU)(think JohnsHopkins) who is investigating the balance of nature versus nurture incriminality. Driven by a secret from her past, Dr. Ferrami isoverjoyed to find that a straight-arrow law student at JFU has anidentical twin (raised separately) who is a convicted rapist. She isnot overjoyed, however, when that man is arrested for raping her bestfriend. Surely Mr. Perfect couldn't be guilty--enter the evilmasterminds, three Nixon-era compadres who have been toiling fordecades to make America safe for racial purity. It's bad enough thatone of the conspirators is Dr. Ferrami's boss, but another is eyeingthe Oval Office. The young professor has stumbled onto a secret thatcould ruin them all, and it's only a matter of pages before bad thingsstart to happen to the pair. The shortest distance between two pointsis a Follett plot. Look elsewhere for subtlety; entertainment, we got. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars it went on and on and on ........
Pass on this book unless every thing else has been used for toilet paper or fire starter.
No it's not that bad but boring and never seems to end.Had potential with the idea
and tied together nicely, just too many clichés, and was a real let down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Identical twins - by different mothers?

Ken Follett's "The Third Twin" is the first time I read Ken Follett's book and I must say that I wasn't disappointed. This book addresses nature vs. nurture fact. It doesn't matter what nature gave you, but what matters is how you have been nurtured and raised up. And it is Jeannie Ferrami, the central character in this book, a young professor at JFU, who is investigating the balance of nature vs. nurture in criminality.

As part of her research, Jeannie finds Steve Logan has an identical twin - who has been raised apart & the twins have never ever met. Plus, these twins are born to different mothers and on different dates! I kind of liked Steve a lot because of the way he behaves & is honest.
In the meanwhile, Jeannie's friend Lisa was raped. And Steve is arrested for raping Lisa. Jeannie is totally confused! To dig out the rapist, Jeannie is in for the biggest surprise of her life. And Steve helps Jeannie too in order to remain out of the jail and get acquitted in rape charge.

What I really liked about "The Third Twin" is the mystery factor and also the way in which it has been written. The story completes in a week - it begins on a Sunday and the mystery solves by next Monday.

Well written and the story flows - there are no abrupt beginnings and abrupt ends. Go ahead - grab a copy of this book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Follett book
For some reason Inever read a book by Follett before, but this won't be my last.I did enjoy the book. There were a lot of plot twists that kept me reading and the scientific premis behind it is chilling.I did have to grit my teeth over some of the political undercurrents in the book, i.e. all consevatives and Christians are evil and liberals will save the world.I did not like Jeannie either, finding her to be a bit arrogant and cold, the proverbial super woman who has looks, athletics, brains, and tough girl mentality-not to mention the nose ring.

I would characterize this as a lighter reading suspense book that does the job.I will try more of Follett's books.

1-0 out of 5 stars How did this get published?
I felt there was one, and only one slightly redeeming part of this book which was Follett's eventual answer to the "environment vs genes" debate that he weakly attempts to have through this book (and only because I actually agreed with the answer).Outside of that, I feel sad for the time I lost reading it.My biggest problem with this book (and the only other Follett book I had the misfortune of reading) is the horrific plot flaws.Mainly the ones where the author takes characters, and then has them act completely out of character (typically they go from semi-smart to downright idiotic) purely to advance his plot.It takes any believability away from the story, and makes me lose all care for the remainder.I don't want to post any potential spoilers, but there are times when I just sat there wondering how a character who did so many intelligent things earlier could act so ridiculously stupid.

Ignoring the major plot flaws, the rest of the book is still quite bad.The characters themselves are basically all the same with artificial details (I think this would be called "one-dimensional").I'm not political (not a fan of donkeys or elephants), but I found the author's ridiculous stereotyping to be annoying. At one point he even says something like "the other 6 board members were white males, so they would support him".Another he says something like "this man helped to support murderers, rapers, and is against gun control".I'm totally in favor of gun control, but what's the point in that statement? To take a shot at conservatives? To show that the author himself is not intelligent enough to distinguish between anti-gun control people and murderers?

2-0 out of 5 stars Follett Woefully Ignorant
The Third Twin is the first and last Ken Follett book I will read. The idea for the plot was clever, but it was not carried off well, and the characters were one-dimensional and unbelievable. What annoys me most is that throughout the book Follett reveals himself again and again to be an ill-informed liberal fool, and I do not suffer fools gladly.

Follett's villains in the novel are conservative Republicans, and Follett shows woeful ignorance about politics and history.Follett's Republicans are ardent racists, a foolish assertion.

The Democrat Party viewed slavery as a positive good. While Republicans were ending slavery, Democrats worked actively against the Union effort.Democrats defeated Reconstruction and on its ruins created Jim Crow.Democrats fought against the 15th Amendment, which gave voting rights to all races.Republican Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to invite a black to the White House for dinner.Democrat Woodrow Wilson in the same era was the quintessential racist. In the 1920's the Republican Party called for anti-lynching legislation, while Democrats blocked it.Even the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by Republicans over the protests of many Democrats.Throughout history Republicans have worked for racial equality, Democrats have not.

Follett says that the Watergate scandal "discredited conservatism," another ignorant contention. In the first place Richard Nixon was not a conservative.Furthermore, the Watergate break-in was not a dictate of conservatism, but of paranoia.Conservatism stands for law and order.

One of Follett's evil Republicans plans to run for President.Listen to this:"his campaign promise:ten percent income tax, paid for by the abolition of welfare."Can Follett name ANY Republican president who has cut welfare, let alone abolished it?How silly!Only liberal loonies think you have to "pay for" a tax cut.Every tax cut in history has increased revenue.Good examples are the tax reductions by Presidents Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush II.By cutting the income tax 30%, Reagan DOUBLED revenue to the federal government.

The atheistic Follett naturally has his evil conservatives be God-fearing Christians, yet he mentions one of them belonging to the Episcopalian Church.Follett is so ignorant that he thinks a church is a church is a church, little realizing that this is an ultra-liberal church which a conservative Republican would not likely choose. At one point Follett uses the simile "as dull as a sermon," which leads me to believe that HE may have at some time attended an Episcopalian Church, as the only boring sermons I have heard were in liberal churches.

Follett's ignorance overwhelms me.One character is making meatloaf by browning chopped hamburger and onions in a skillet.Another character is handcuffed to the pee-trap pipe under a bathroom basin.Follett does not realize that a 10-year-old couch potato could easily knock this pipe loose. One character convicted of rape and arson receives a five-year sentence--impossibly lenient.

There are many more examples of Follett's ignorance, foolishness, and personal bias, but I think this is sufficient to demonstrate why I will never ready another book that he has written.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sadistic Much?
This book leads me to believe that Ken Follett somehow gets off on black women getting gang raped. It certainly happened enough times in this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Swingin' 70;s
This work isn't exactly trash, it's a very 1970's morality story with an unlike, almost anti-hero behaving very much like aSwinging London jet-setter. It follows the 70's fashion/sexuaity formula with Mr. Follet'susual characters. Very similar to "The Executioner," By DonPendleton, the book that defined the action/adventure genre, this book ismore a reflection of the era than a bad work of fiction. While it deserveno awards, it isn't trash either.

1-0 out of 5 stars What trash!
This was either obviously an early novel of Follet's or his pipe dreams of menage a trois. The plot is ridiculous and the characters shallow.I have read others of yours Mr. Follett, I am glad you have improved.

4-0 out of 5 stars An exciting thriller
This was the first book I had read by Ken Follett, but since I have also read the Modigliani Scandal. He keeps the reader so interested with the action, fast turns and dramatics that it is hard to put the book down when you get tired.I enjoyed this book very much and I hope to get an opportunity to read more of this talented authors' work in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Follett was still learning how towrite.
This is evidently one of the first books ever written by Follett. The plot is banal, the characters are built very superficially. It's worth reading only if you are a young writer in need of encouragement - it shows a youthful, unsuccessful effort by an author who grew later on to be a really good writer.

However, if you read it expecting the high quality of other books by Follett, you will be frustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Novel I Have Ever Read
After reading Ken Follett's novel WORLD WITHOUT END, I learned that it was essentially a "14th Century" sequel to "PILLARS" with its 12th Century setting.
Somewhere I read that PILLARS is one of the 101 greatest books ever written. That could be true; but what I know for sure is the PILLARS is, by far, the greatest novel I have ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pillars of the Earth
I have barely gotten started on this book but am looking forward to reading the entire book!Intriging!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great service.
The book was exactly as they described since I bought it used. It was reasonably priced and shipped/delivered fairly quick. Overall satisfied with the book and service.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not great, overrated

"Pillars" is not a Horrible book, but for people like myself who enjoy something more than just a series of connected violent or sexual events, this book was both frustrating and boring, and not worth finishing.

I am not an expert in historical fiction, and my opinions are only from one who loves a great book, and a great fan of this historical period. However Follett's use of unbelievable dialogue, over simplification of everything, even the names of his characters ("Ted Builder", is the main character for goodness sake), drains the book of the dark mystique and allure that I love from this period. Also, I found the cast characters hard to believe for this time period.Simply, It was very hard to get lost in the book, without questioning its construction.

This book is not for some people, specifically those who enjoy subtext, deeper thought, and complex yet fruitful character relationships and personalities, or a good litterary challenge. It is not beautifully written. He uses big words, but the charecter reactions and plot suprises are really quite poor, and in a litterature mindset, bland and boring. In other words, this book is intelecually shallow for all its hype, and than 600 pages to long.

If you simply like an easy but long, readable, and action packed page-turner, than this book may be excellent for you. I will even say his architechure and geopgrahpical points are great and he has some real page turning moments of action. But this book is not profound, nor is it a soul-stirring piece. It is only another thriller made to sell, (which Follett himself admits in the preface).

In my advice, I would heavily research this book BEFORE reading it, and I think it will be easy to tell if you will love it or hate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pillars of the Earth
It is a fabulously addicting book. However, unless you are an architect you have to give the book at least 200 pages before you are hooked on the story. It has great character development and you find yourself cheering for some and wishing others dead. It is a long epic but one that stays with you even when you aren't reading it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pillars of the Almighty
Very well written but there are so many details from the perspective of the main character, master mason want to be- Tom that is makes the story less exciting to a non-mason & non architect such as myself. The photos & images are from twelth-century England and are well worth viewing even if the story is more difficult to get through than Pillars of the Almighty was. It is like reading a documentary more than a novel in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting
I have read Pillars of the Earth three or four times, and it remains my all time favorite novel. The way this book intersperses the text of Pillars of the Earth with beautiful photographs of cathedrals is amazing. If you like Pillars of the Earth a lot, this cocktail table photo book will absolutely captivate you.

If you wish you could read more about the construction of cathedrals, try Bryn Athyn Cathedral, the story of the construction of a beautiful cathedral in suburban Philadelphia, using the methods and techniques of the 13th century. You can also visit this cathedral, said to be one of the finest examples of stained glass in the world, as it is open every day.

2-0 out of 5 stars picture book
There are alot of pictures of Cathedrals but I would have liked a description next to the picture. There are descriptions at the end of the book which I didn't find until I had finished.

Some where it was mentioned that it would be good to read this before reading Pillars of the Earth. That probably is true. However I read Pillars of the Earth first so this was a repeat for me, therefore I was only mildly interested in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Step
Ken Follet's work, "Pillars of the Earth" is an epic tale which I have read through at least a dozen times.Through each read characters came to life in a new way, emphasizing Follet's portrayal of the cyclical path we all follow and the paths that have never been trodden.

From my first read through "Pillars of the Almighty" I was immediately aware of new dimensions of Follet's epic that I had never thought to contemplate. The beauty captured by Fitzgerald's camera will give any fan of Follet a new perspective on a tale they know well. For those who have not yet read "Pillars of the Earth", this book is the introduction and guide into Tom and Jack's world of 12th century England that any fan of history, architecture or art is sure to treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Los pilares de la tierra
Este libro es muy bueno y super interesante. Lo habia leido en ingles, pero ha sido una delicia poder leerlo en español.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hang in there... it is going to be great soon
First part is very slow... well it explains a lot about architecture, not my favorite part of the book so I take a star for that reason.... there is an incident then that start changing all and then you have a very exciting novel you can't stop reading until the end!... The version in spanish has an error on translation you can simply notice and findout easy so you only know is a mistake, I compared with version in english, the error is not in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read
I've read lots of books: good, bad, and every combination in between. By far this is the best book I've ever read. The story is engaging; all sorts of human emotions are depicted in the book (greed, lust, love, joy, etc) although it is quite repetitive. Lady Aliena is described a thousand times depending on the character looking at her; however, despite those flaws, Follet manages to blend history and fiction so well that the reader may think he/she is living those events.

2-0 out of 5 stars Literatura de formula.

5-0 out of 5 stars A RIVETING MEDIEVAL SAGA...
This is the Spanish text edition of "Pillars of the Earth", a masterful saga of life in twelfth century England and epic storytelling at its best. The author weaves a rich and colorful tapestry of people, places, and events surrounding the building of a magnificent cathedral in the medieval town of Kingsbridge.

Early twelfth century England was a country in a state of flux. King Henry I had died without a male heir. His daughter Maude was to be queen. The English barons, for the most part, however, refused to swear fealty to her. Maude's first cousin, Stephen of Blois, then usurped her rights and proclaimed himself king. This was to plunge England into a civil war that was to last for many, many years, turning England into a virtually lawless and tumultuous land, until Maude's son became King Henry II of England.

For most people, however, life would go on with every day concerns being paramount. The book tells the story of a number of these lives. One story is that of Tom, a master builder, whose life long dream was to build a cathedral. The lives of Tom and his family would intersect that of a humble and intelligent monk named Phillip who would become the prior at Kingsbridge Priory. The fates would intervene and provide Tom with an opportunity to pursue his dream.

Their lives would intersect with a number of other individuals, some good, some evil, who would have a great impact on their lives and their goals. Tom would lose his first wife, Agnes, by whom he already had two children, brutish Alfred and sweet Martha, due to complications sustained during the birth of another son. This son was to provide a connection between Tom and Phillip of which Phillip would long be unaware.

Tom would ultimately marry Ellen, a strong willed independent woman of the forest, perceived by many to be a witch. Her son Jack, a sensitive, highly intelligent lad, whose father was deceased, would grow to manhood. His dream would begin where Tom's had left off. In Jack's background, however, was a mystery surrounding his deceased father, a French jongleur. That mystery in some way involved Sir Percy Hamleigh, Waleran Bigod, and Prior James, the old prior of Kingsbridge before Phillip.

When Earl Bartholomew of Shiring makes the treasonous mistake of siding with Maude in the conflict with Stephen, he ends up on the losing side. Sir Percy Hamleigh and his son William, siding with Stephen, attack the Earl's castle, and take Earl Bartholomew captive. Imprisoned for treason, he loses his earldom to the Hamleighs. His young son and heir, Richard, and his daughter, the beautiful Lady Aliena, are left to fend for themselves, but not until William Hamleigh has slaked his thirst for revenge upon them. You see, William had been engaged at one time to marry the Lady Aliena, only to be spurned by her to his vast public humiliation. This was the moment for which he had been waiting. Aliena and Richard would ultimately migrate to Kingsbridge to begin a new life.

Meanwhile, the church itself was having its own political intrigues. Phillip was tricked by Waleran Bigod, an ambitious arch-deacon, into supporting him for the post of bishop. Phillip would later best Waleran and incur his enmity for a lifetime. Remigius, a spy for Waleran Bigod, was a monk at Kingsbridge Priory who saw his dream of becoming prior at Kingsbridge dissipate with the advent of Phillip. He would spend a lifetime undermining Phillip and plotting against him. Moreover, the fate of Kingsbridge and the building of its cathedral would always seem to hinge upon the political vagaries of the time. Its fortunes would ebb and flow with the political winds.

Ever present throughout the destinies of all these characters is the age old battle between good and evil. Complicating it further were those who sought to do good but did evil, believing that the end justified the means. Spanning over fifty turbulent years, this is a spellbinding story of love, hate, faith, betrayal, revenge, and triumph. Against a backdrop of civil war, the sharply drawn characters grasp the imagination of the reader. Twelfth century England is laid out in painstaking detail, providing an unforgettable backdrop for the lives lived within the pages of this memorable work of historical fiction. This book is simply riveting. Bravo! ... Read more

Lie Down with Lions:
Ellis, the American. Jean-Pierre, the Frenchman. They were two men on opposite sides of the cold war, with a woman torn between them. Together, they formed a triangle of passion and deception, racing from terrorist bombs in Paris to the violence and intrigue of Afghanistan - to the moment of truth and deadly decision for all of them...

Eye of the Needle:
One enemy spy knows the secret of the Allies' greatest deception, a brilliant aristocrat and ruthless assassin - code name: "The Needle" - who holds the key to the ultimate Nazi victory. Only one person stands in his way: a lonely Englishwoman on an isolated island, who is coming to love the killer who has mysteriously entered her life. Ken Follett's unsurpassed and unforgettable masterwork of suspense, intrigue, and dangerous machinations of the human heart.

Triple:
EGYPT--where, hidden deep in the desert, a top-secret project to build a nuclear plant that will give the Arabs the bomb nears completion...
ISRAEL--where the Mossad's top agent, Nat Dickstein, is given an impossible mission: to find and steal 200 tons of uranium without any other nation discovering the theft...
RUSSIA--where top KGB officials have decided to tip the atomic balance in Egypt's favor...

5-0 out of 5 stars great deal
listen to a lot of books on CD this was a great deal and the story was good also---double bonus

3-0 out of 5 stars There's something to it, but not his best
This book has a typical Ken Follett structure: suspense, interesting plot idea, and drama. But this time, the excitement was not warranted. For starters, the entire plot is in or around one house so the author has to try harder to pull it off; unfortunately, Follett does not."Whiteout" reads like a rushed book, in the style of i-had-to-do-it-fast-because-my-publisher-wanted-something-out-by-the-deadline.In sum, do not read this book if you never read Follett before.Start out with either "Pillars" or "Eye of the Needle" and then move to this one if you are compelled.Hopefully the upcoming Pillars sequel "World Without End" will be Follett at his best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
This is my second review. I guess perhaps my first one was not acceptable to Amazon. I can't remember the total text of my initial comments so I will have to paraphrase. Overall the book is badly in need of an edit. Far too verbose and filled with irrelevant and bland digressions. Main character Toni Gallo, totally unbeleivable. She is supposed to be an ex-cop and head of security, yet she voices her inner thoughts with the naivity of a teenage schoolgirl. Josephine Bailey's reading? Insipid, monotonous. Totally unconvincing in all the roles she is called upon to play. I remember Ken Follett as being far better than this.

4-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A WAY TO SPEND CHRISTMAS
Follett followers and new listeners will quickly find themselves absorbed in the best-selling author's latest scenario. This time it's all about bio-terrorism, and compellingly read by London born Josephine Bailey. She knows how to hold listeners, sustaining their tension and popping surprises as we find ourselves shivering at the prospect of what Follett has cooked up this time.

An ex policewoman, Toni Gallo is now head of security at a pharmaceutical firm, Oxenford Medical. As the Christmas holiday approaches a cannister holding a lethal virus has gone astray.

Characters in this evil vs. good battle all converge upon the Oxenford family home in Scotland. Once there, they're kept captive by a blinding winter storm. Toni has eyes for her boss, Stanley Oxenford. But, she'd be better off to keep her attention fixed on his son, Kit, a gambling ne'er do-well who plots to steal from his dad's lab to pay off debts.

There's the usual coterie of newsmen tracing what they think is a hot story, and other Oxenford family members trying to satisfy their egos and urges plus assorted thieves. What a way to spend Christmas!

Product Description
... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Triple is not nearly enough...
Thin plot, thinly developed characters, not the author's best. The Pillars of the Earth, Eye of the Needle, and Dangerous Fortune stand out as by far his best.Triple is interesting, but not nearly the suspense, drama or richly developed characters of Follett's best... not worth a read in my opinion. ...
