I don't leave home without it!
I keep a copy of this fabulous food guide in my glove compartment so I don't miss an opportunity to try something new wherever I am in L.A. It's a great companion to my own guide, Free L.A. Find something free to do that's fun then spend wisely on eating out by using the Eat Los Angeles guide to find the best restaurant for whatever you're hungry for, wherever you're hungry in the L.A. metro area!

A Useful Guide to Finding our City's Best Food
Every time I pick up this delightful book I am reminded of why I love living in Los Angeles.

On each page I discover new bakeries, markets or restaurants I am eager to try, including quite a few in my own area in the San Fernando Valley.Naturally, I have to try "the only Bulgarian restaurant in town," and to visit a seafood market where "The most jaw-dropping array of live seafood swim in spotless tanks" and a produce market described thus: "If every neighborhood had a market like this, life would be perfect." For places I already like,the descriptions are so enticing that theyremind me it's time for another visit, and soon.

The book's design with the tabbed chapters for restaurants, bakeries, cafes, and other categories and the division of each category by area of the city makes it very efficient to find what I want, whether it's a Thai or Middle Eastern restaurant in my area or a terrific fish market in the San Gabriel Valley. But I enjoy the book also as relaxing material to read and plan for more future food fun.I love the special pages of "Good Food Neighborhoods" rich in food destinations.I'm planning to use them to leisurely explore flavors of faraway culturesduringmyholidays at home.

If only there were an easy way to download the whole book into my G.P.S...

What happened to the San Fernando Valley?????
I bought the book because it sounded good from a radio interview.Such an interesting concept for a food/city guide!

I had to buy it online because it wasn't in local bookstores.So, not having had the opportunity to look through it, imagine how surprised I was to see that they don't seem to recognize the San Fernando Valley as a part of LA!What is this?The 60s again, when people thought you needed shots to go to the SFV? @@

If you live and eat out here in the West Valley or if you're unfamiliar with it and you're going to be out here looking for someplace to eat or shop, you're not going to get any help from this book.

I think the authors, being on staff at the LA Times, should be ashamed and embarrassed at such an enormous oversight.Personally, I recognize that the guide could be useful for other parts of the city but such a lack of awareness of my area makes me dubious about the areas I don't know and reluctant to rely on it.

Where Shall We Go For Dinner?

Great resource for a tourist
Got this reference to use in addition to Yelp, Chowhound, LAMAG reviews, etc., for a 4-day trip eating all over Los Angeles. Liked the fun writing style and format is real easy to use and cross reference with index. Tons of restaurants to choose from. Convenient compact size. Maybe only wish included a few basic maps? Also, perhaps some tables in the back with hours, reservations or not, etc. (perhaps this info is better checked online, to be up to date?).

Looking forward to 2011 or next version for another trip!

Handy for a newcomer, but take with a grain of salt
I bought this book when I first moved to LA because the sheer number of restaurants in this city is overwhelming.This book does a reasonably good job of narrowing the field and providing a good starting point for exploring what LA has to offer.I especially like that in addition to restaurants, the book provides listings for groceries, farmers markets, kitchen equipment retailers, and other specialty shops.

But you should really treat the book as a starting point, and not as some kind of comprehensive compendium with Zagat-like reviews.Some of the recommendations in the book are real gems, but some are decidedly not.I now cross-reference recommendations from the book with Jonathan Gold's restaurant reviews, which are available on-line.

Best lA Food Guide
I have used many restaurant guides like Zagat, Yelp, etc. This book is the easiest format and I like how it divides LA into sections. Also there are sections for best dinner, brunch, etc. The descriptions are very accurate and concise on each suggested restaurant and I usually use the recommendations to order a signature dish at the location.

I have always tried to find dining establishments in the South Bay without success. Now I have one book that I can take with me to decide where to eat.

I have lived in LA for 10 years and this book has some hidden spots that I did not know. I intend on trying out every restaurant in the book.

Great resource for food-loving Angelinos
This book gives thorough coverage of all the best things of food-related interest in the L.A. area, from modest to upscale. What sets it apart is that it includes those wonderful little restaurants and local finds that are so often missing from other major restaurant guides.If you like to follow food blogs and such, this book includes all of the places most loved and puts them together in a book that is well organized and easy to use.It is grouped by neighborhood - important in a city this big and also by categories so you can find specialty grocers, wine stores and more.I think this is a fabulous book to have if you love food.

Not really needed
We were planning a movie night and, even though I had heard this may not be a good resource, I bought it to try and make a more memorable event.I could have saved them money I spent on this.I like it that they tried and I'm sure many could find something interesting in it, I didn't.

Come to the fair in Ithkar
I believe there were only four 'Magic in Ithkar' volumes, which is a shame because Norton and Adams did a great job of soliciting (and editing?) these commonly-themed fantasy shorts.Each of the four collections has the same prologue by Robert Adams, which explains how the fair originated in Ithkar (a religious anniversary turned pilgrimage), the set-up (temple, campgrounds for the merchants, docks and canals for the riparian traffic, etc.), and the difficulties encountered on a pilgrimage or trading voyage to Ithkar (Death Swamp, dragons, outlaw wizards).All weapons must be surrendered before entering the fair and wizards are discouraged from glamorizing shoddy goods with their spells.Of course, as at any large festival, the fair at Ithkar has its share of rogues, piratical merchants, bravos, potion-makers and witches, troupes of entertainers (not a few of them turning tricks), and gullible pilgrims.

"Flux of Fortune"--Mildred Downey Broxon: a rather grim lead-off story that parallels the non-fiction book, The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson.The story of a well-travelled physician, Ithkar's communal water supply, and bad sanitation.

"Geydelle's Protective"--Lin Carter:A mage who is known for his mischievous pranks attempts to steal a powerful talisman.

"Flaming-Arrow"--R.A. Lafferty:While Peter Flaming-Arrow rides the updrafts in a boat without a bottom, his covenanted familiar, a mouse, remains behind to fulfill a prophecy.You may read this cock-eyed Lafferty story many times and still not figure it out.It's fun, though.

"The Shaman Flute"--Shariann Lewitt:A young steppe rider, who is also an apprentice-shaman comes to the Fair to buy sheep for his demon-haunted clan.An enemy treads on his shadow even here.My favorite story.

"Shadow Quest"--Brad Linaweaver:When an apprentice magician accidentally conjures up a monstrous snake-bird, his master sends him on a dangerous quest.

"Kissmeowt and the Healing Friar"--A.R. Major:A healing friar seeks his colleague's murderer with the help of a telepathic cat, dog, horse, rat, and a cut-purse he raised from the dead.

"The Cards of Eldrianza"--Mary H. Schaub:Eldrianza the fortune-teller dies on the way to the Fair, and her inexperienced young assistant, Kereth must take her place.

"The Marbled Horn"--Lynn Ward:Gray Eyes, servant to a worker of bone and horn must find her master's favorite carving which was stolen on their first day in Ithkar.
