A fabulous true tale oftreasure lost and found and lost again!
A short but wonderful story of finding real treasure!!! The biggest find of Roman Silver ever in the UK. However it is the 'human' element within this story that makes it so thrilling. Greed does terrible things to us all.....
This is a great story for kids but I was 28 when I first read it. I have remembered it so vividly for all these years ( I am now in my 40's..) I just had to buy a copy to keep for myself. If you love archaeology and can imagine the thrill of finding something truely gobsmackingly amazing... this is a great read!

The BEST book in the world!
I've read this book snd LOVED it. It's about a worker on a rich mans farm who finds something hard in the ground and it turns out to be TREASER! The man forgets about it after digging it up and a year later his boss (the man who kept the treaser) was cought by one of his freinds. The man who found it becomes rich and is poor no more.
This true story can show that any ordinary person can find a treaser.

Roald Dahl met and interviewed the finder of the treasure
One might argue that this book about the greatest treasure ever found in the British Isles is itself a rare find. Roald Dahl was able to interview Gordon Butcher, the man who originally found the Roman silver on his land, no small feat since Butcher had become suspicious of writers and journalists after being cheated out of a fortune that should have been his. The account, mostly in Butcher's own words, of the discovery is absolutely entrancing and Dahl has the wisdom to keep the story tight and lean, while preserving the details about Butcher and that memorable day when his life changed forever.
I have had a hard time finding true historical accounts which I can share with my entire family and which will hold the interest of both children and adults. With pictures on nearly every page (by the inimitable Ralph Steadman) and vivid writing which makes history come alive, this one fits the bill.

Mildenhall
The easy reading style of Dahl is at its best in the Mildenhall treasure, when fast development mixed with a human element are concerned. He allows the user to empathise with characters and feel the disapointment not only of the good but also those of more dubious character. He gives an insight into peoples lives which should not be possible in such a short space. A very good read, to see the darker side of human character and the way in which naivity is often ruthlessly exploited, however despite this the book is kept light and readable with vivid images and interesting content,a worthwhile read. ... It's Awesome
I love the book. I am a 3rd grader, and I laughed at all the very funny words the BFG came up with. We first read the book at school, and I loved it so much I just had to have it at home.My mom and dad laughed also - what a great book!

A Pleasure
Although I've been studying Spanish for years, I feel that my language skills are rusty. 3 great books in one
If you enjoyed reading Roald Dahl as a kid you will love reading his short stories for adults. They are dark stories with a signature Roald Dahl twist. This guy is one of the greatest story tellers ever. These 3 particular titles show off all of Dahls talents. While most of his works were short stories, "My Uncle Oswald" is one of the few adult NOVELS that Dahl wrote, giving the reader a GRAND FINALE...and man its a good one. Roald Dahl's love for fine wine, food and furniture give his stories a lot of realistic texture with his acurate and intellegent descriptions of these subjects. Once you dive into the first short story in this book you won't be able to put it down. Books are fine.Order messed up.
Books arrived in as described condition.However, 2 Charlie and the Chocolate Factories came and no Great Glass Elevator.No response from vendor when I wrote them.I'm more than a little disappointed with this outfit.

Pleasant reading...
I've read these stories for the first time this weekend, and what a pleasant time it was! Anyone should be able to enjoy these books, even adults. I myself am currently 27.

Great for the kids (as well as a reminiscence)
Loved these books when I was a kid and really glad to now share them with my kids.The boxed set is a bargin, although the paper backs would not stand up to a rough kid.

Cruel and offensive
We recently finished "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" as a readaloud to our five year old daughter. What a cruel disappointment to read this book. By chapter three, we were all bored. And as a parent, I thought the characters were unusually mean as they spoke to each other. By chapter four, the "President" was racially stereotyping other cultures. As the parent of a Chinese child, I couldn't even bring myself to read aloud the Chinese Prime Minister's dialogue (for example: "Gleetings, honorable Mr. Plesident" and "Excuse pleese, Mr. Plesident. You make big mistake."

Needless to say, we didn't finish chapter four, and we won't be finishing the book.

it's good
Here's what my 4 and 6yr old have to say about it. We just finished it after reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which they loved. They liked this one less than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but they still looked forward to reading it every night. It's true that it got boring when the characters floated around in space for so long, but they liked the part when the grandparents ate the pills--it led to a lot of mathematical calculations about how old their parents would be depending on how many pills we ate (each one makes you 20 yrs younger). Recommended!

This is an exciting gleeful story for children and adults
I read this twenty years ago, and about all I remembered was that I loved the Vermicious Knids ("Scram!").When I picked it up again a year ago, I realized that as a child, I missed the glorious absurdity, the joyful gibberish, and the over-the-top satire of U.S. politics (the Vice-President is the President's former nanny, and she basically babysits him and won't let him have too much candy, and his cat Mrs. Taubsypuss is a more important character than just about anyone else in the cabinet).Dahl writes this fast-paced little story with an irresistible mischievous glee, and his excitement is infectious.The story itself is not that weighty (basically, the family and Mr. Wonka go into space, have a quick adventure, come back, have a quick adventure, then it's over), but the style and enthusiasm are the real selling points.I heartily recommend this book to both children and grown-ups.

I'm a Roald Dahl fan....really liked the story but I miss his illustrations.Good little book, though!

Fantastic bridge to reading chapter books.
The story of a boy who, against his mother's instructions, ventures into a forest of evil and must use his wits to save himself and others he finds there.The entire book, but especially a brilliant chase seen that opens it, kept my boys in rapt attention over and over again, starting when they were 5.After the first few readings, the boys were ready for true chapter books, including everything by Dahl.Now my 8 year old reads our falling apart copy to younger kids who happen to come to our house.A must have for every boy's library.

A new favorite
A rare picture book from Roald Dahl and a good introduction to his work. My six-year old was entranced. I especially loved the description of the Minpins and their homes. My son loved that a little boy was able to save the day and outsmart the nasty beast.

It is a bit longer than most picture books, so I would not recommend for younger kids. It is also a little scary in the beginning.

A little scary but satisfying
When I first started reading this one to my 7-year-old I was little concerned that it might give him nightmares - it starts off a bit scary. The devil whispers in the little boy's ear, he goes into the Forest of Sin, and then is chased by a terrifying monster who wants to eat him... but it eventually comes around and the little boy and the Minpins (the tiny people who inhabit the forest) eventually kill the terrifying monster rather easily. It's a very satisfying story for a 7-year-old boy (or a 40-year-old mom for that matter) it seems to have a little of everything and the illustrations are beautiful, too. Unexpectedly dull
As a fan of Dahl and short stories I looked forward to reading this short collection but ultimately found it quite dull. 5 out of the 9 stories here have been printed in previous collections - "Poison", "The Sound Machine", "Georgy Porgy", "Genesis and Catastrophe", and "The Hitch-hiker" have all appeared in "Someone Like You", "Kiss Kiss" and "The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar". The 4 that haven't - "The Umbrella Man", "Mr Botibol", "Vengeance is Mine, Inc.", and "The Butler" - aren't that strong and didn't hold my attention.

I liked "Genesis and Catastrophe", a story about the birth of Adolf Hitler, and "The Hitch-hiker" a story about a skilful thief and a run in with the law, but otherwise the storytelling genius of Dahl was missing from the majority of this book. I'd suggest readers to pick up his other collections like "Someone Like You" for a good roundup of Roald Dahl's excellent short stories and skip this weak book.

Overpriced
I should have done more research before ordering this book.Not only is it overpriced, in my opinion, for such a thin book, but several of the stories are also in "The Best of Roald Dahl." ... Read more

Fair price
Popular titles translated into Spanish aren't always easy to find, or the price is too much..........not the case for Roald Dahl's El Gran Gigante Bonachon. Came quickly and in perfect condition too.

A Giant Sized Disappointment
The same book written in english (The BFG by Dahl) is humorous and adventurous.The translation into spanish makes the book difficult to read and sometimes hard to follow.The giant speaks in a different dialect which tends to distract the reader/listener. When this dialect is used in the spanish version the names of the giants are difficult to pronounce.I beganreading it to my bilingual third graders aloud in english and then switched to spanish thinking that it would be easier for them to understand and relate to.This wasn't the case.The spanish version is probably a better read for children 10 and up. ... If you enjoy this, then you will love Dahl's book of Ghost Stories.I was astounded to find that he was extremely skilled in the art of scaring you more with less.They are the kind of stories that stir up the depths of your imagination and lay bare the macabre fears of every soul. I needed no description from Dahl to "see" ghosts of shy,little girls looking for a playmate, or the sea rolling back and the dead returning for a night of revelry.He leads you right in.Scared me good.I came away truly impressed at his cleverness.

What can I say?
If you like reading, than this Roald Dahl book is for you. If you hate reading, than this book is definatly for you. Its a great collection of stories for the young at heart, as well as for those cynical souls whobelieve they have ¨Seen and done it all¨. For those of you afraid that thiswill be sappy or sentimentel claptrap, rest at ease; TCSH has none of theblatentency found in todays suspense novels (such as Steven King), butrather a sly and crafty way of reaching to its conclusion. I read my firstRD story in high school becuase I was forced to, loved it, and bought thiscollection on a trip to Oxford when I was 17...ever since then Ive turnedto this book on long weekends and holidays; it has a funny way of makingyou feel like everytime like its the first time youve read it.Simply put,the this THE COLLECTION for true fans of the short story, leaving you notjust statisfied, but longing for more more more (with special kudos to theUncle Oswald stories...) excellent bedside reading
Dahl's stories are as shallow as a puddle, but that doesn't keep them from being a great read.Dahl has a crafty way of building up each of his stories to a fiendish shocker of a conclusion.If you've never read Dahl,suffice it to say that he has a disgusting and macabre mind, and I meanthat in the most complimentary way.The effect is delightful, funny andaddictive.You won't take any deep truths from this book, but you'll goback to it anytime you need a dose of earthy, clever humour.

Impressive collection shows two sides of Mr. Dahl
Everybody knows, or should know, Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected. These stories alone make this book a must-read for anybody.

Fewer people are familiar with Dahl's stories about his experiences as a pilot during WorldWar II. In my opinion this category has the higher re-read value, since theTales of the Unexpected are similar to jokes: no matter how well they aretold, if you know the punchline you might as well skip them..

Incontrast, his WW-II stories are touching and more personal. They are abrilliant mixture of fact and fiction. For example, the settings are thoseof real WW-II campaigns and the descriptions of aircraft are true tohistory. However, the events that take place in these stories have acurious fictional, if not magical, feel to them.

The most interesting book that I have ever read!

This 3-in-1 by Roald Dahl is very good. I recommend this book to all you readers out there! The BFG is a book where an orphan Sophie is sleeping one day. She comes across a Big Friendly Giant. Love This Book!
This was one of my favorite books of all time as a kid.Roald Dahl is just the greatest!

Too Wonderful To Miss
The BFG is the Big Friendly Giant whose values get him in a heap of trouble among bigger and not-so-friendly giants.My kids LOVE this story that we originally borrowed from the library.When I saw amazon's great price, I had to buy 2.One for us and one to gift away.Roald Dahl is at his best here and as a teacher, I enjoyed pondering the potential geography lesson applications from this story.No matter why you buy it the book is loaded with teachable moments and lots of heart.

Loved it!
I gave this to my 7 year old grandson so he could listen to it before we went to a children's theater to see The Big Friendly Giant.He loved listening to the 4 hours of story, and because he knew the story and all the characters, the play really came alive for him.The actual book is above his reading level, so the tape was a good way for him to hear the story.

Henry Sugar
A book that I often read to my children when they were young, and made amny references to those stories as they grew up.Discovered that they had bought the book also for their children -- so we are making it a traditional family present for newcomers.

Henry Sugar can change your life
Because of "the Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" and Ramtha, I now can read through a deck of cards, just like Henry Sugar.Shuffled and face down, I can see on the back side what card is on top, turn it over and verify.That's the reason I bought the book to begin with.The other stories are well written and enjoyable, too, but when you begin to grasp what our minds are capable of and the great contributions we can make to humanity, Henry Sugar stands out.

I'm not the only one who can read like Henry Sugar.I was about the 45th person at Ramtha's School of Enlightenment to do this.It started with Kenny Thompson ([...]), who is now able to do telekenesis. [...].

So, when you read his "fiction", know that nothing is impossible!

Wonderful, imaginative, amazing.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More by Roald Dahl is a great book. The author uses amazing vocabulary that is interesting and simple at the same time. This book is full of wonderfully written short stories that are intriguing and clearly-stated simultaneously. Frankly, the ideas for these stories are very unique. Normally, I am not a fan of short stories, but in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More, the stories are just the right length for a good plot, but at the same time not too long or drawn-out. The details and creativity in the storys is another amazing aspect of the author's capapbilities. The combination of these three elements really comes together to form a great short story collection. Roald Dahl is a great author, and I highly recommend this book.

Classic Dahl
I read this book years ago, as a child, and was thrilled to find I could still get a copy years (ok, decades *cringes*) later. Yet the book is certainly one both children and adults can enjoy.

The main stories (in my humble opinion) to read are "The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar" and "The Hitchhiker". I've never been a great fan of his non-fiction...that is not to say that he's a lousy non-fiction writer, but his fiction appeals to my imagination and sense of humour.

The "Henry Sugar" tale is about a greedy rich bachelor who discovers a book in a friend's library about a man in India who can see without using his eyes, and can even see through playing cards. It doesn't take Henry long to decide to steal the book, and to practise the technique so that he can cheat at gambling. Yet though he starts out mean-spirited and focussed solely on personal gain, through the long, arduous dedication to these yoga exercises, Henry makes his own journey of self-discovery, and finds at the end that he no longer cares about money. Instead, he decides to use his money for good, as a modern-day Robin Hood - winning money from casinos with his ability, yet using the winnings to set up orphanages in different countries around the world.

"The Hitchhiker" is told from the point of view of the author who is driving a brand new car and picks up a hitchhiker, who turns out to be a most unusual fellow with an extraordinary skill.

While Dahl is best known for his children's stories, he also wrote a lot of adult fiction...if memory serves, he wrote a number of Tales Of The Unexpected books - short stories which were usually thrillers, often full of surprise twists and sometimes with a touch of the paranormal. This book showcases the best of Dahl's short story writing ability, creating 3-D characters we feel sad to leave at the end, and giving us tales that mystify, delight and inspire.

I highly recommend this book.

Retro Review: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More
As the title suggests, this book is a collection of seven short stories written by one of the all time greats: Roald Dahl. Let us start with the big one, the monster, the "man this one is so good, let's just name the whole book after it" - "The Wonderful Story" in the flesh.

Stretching the limits of short by clocking (flipping?) in at 68 pages, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" could nearly be published all by itself. I can see the title now: Henry Sugar, the EP. The tale is worth every page. The story centers on a rich, bored man (the aforementioned Henry) who comes upon an unassuming notebook. The thin volume holds the key to something, as Dahl would put it, fantastically extraordinary: the ability to see through solid objects.

Now I don't know about you, but this premise alone had me hooked as a youngster. The remaining pages melted away as I wondered if Mr. Sugar would have the patience and determination to learn this astounding skill, and what he would do with the power if he got it.

While "The Wonderful Story..." towers over the others in both size and ability to thrill, the accompanying six short stories pack a significant punch. From a true story of a man unearthing a fortune to an unforgettable tale of a hitchhiker with sticky fingers, young readers (especially boys) will be delighted.
