Don't worry - still in print
The only thing out of print here is a hardback "limited edition" which was released about 2 years after the book's original paperback printing. The paperback is still widely available and given how good the book is and how much it seemed to galvanize a generation (in both good ways and bad), I'm sure it will be in print for a long time to come.

Coupland's influence on pop culture will only grow...
Douglas Coupland's first novel, Generation X, made a definte and resounding impact on pop culture. He did not "invent" the phrase, but his novel brought to light all the things that 'generation X' has cometo mean.

This is not Coupland's finest book, but as his first, it is aninteresting study and an enjoyable beginning to a fantastic and continuingcareer. His writing style, even here in his first novel, is unique andflowing. Douglas Coupland's books will continue to have a finger on thepulse of his generation, and his influence on pop culture will continue togrow.

Intersting, but worth praise?
This novel may set up the phrase "generation X" to be used abundantly, now to the point of cliche, but for us to give so much credit to this book seems puzzling.The characters are slackers and I feel thisstory does little to show an improvement on thier part or a sincere care onthe part of the author.

This interesting, as a history of how the phrasegrew to cult status, but it is difficult to label this a great book.

Why is this out of print? It is one of Douglas Coupland's best! Yes, he did not invent the phrase, but the name generation x has become so important in modern society.

And Just Wait Until Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft !
This book actually touches on two favorites of mine. Douglas Coupland is the author of two of my favorite books - Generation X and MicroSerfs. Tomb Raider is my favorite gaming series and I just adore Lara Croft. She is the coolest. This book combines a tribute to Lara and a walk-through of the Tomb Raider Games - I believe through Tomb Raider II. Now, anyone who's ever played TR knows how rockin' cool Lara Croft is. This book contains excellent renderings of our favorite adventurer. The overall book quality is very good - glossy pages and very well presented. There's a lot of look at but if you enjoy the series, then this is a must have. And just a reminder - as all Tomb Raider fans know - The Tomb Raider movie - starring Angelina Jolie ( they couldn't have made a better choice ) as Lara Croft - opens on June 15th 2001...I know I can't wait. I'm a Lara fan, but this book doesn't do much for me.
This book is mostly fluff, little substance.It looks like the bulk ofthe effort went into trying to be fancy withimages download from the web. The walkthroughs are printed in multiple fonts--which makes them tough toread.There are much better guides available anyway.This book could havebeen much better.I was very disappointed.Save your money.

I am a big fan of Lara Croft, and try to get everything that has to do with her, most of 'em are good. BUT this book under review "Lara's Book" I hate!This book is not worth the paper that it is written on!The guides are inaccurate andconfusing to read -- if you want a goodwalkthrough get "The Tomb Raider Official Strategy Guides" byZach Meston, which are put out by Dimension Publications.The pictures (theonly worthwhile thing about the book) can be found in other sources --calenders, websites and so on.Finally the story . . . put me to sleep. Sexist videogame characters suck.
I really like Douglas Coupland's writing--I've read Microserfs, and it's a great book, but what is THIS all about?A super-long fan book about a videogame character that looks like a generation-X pornstar?I'd be almostless surprised to hear he'd written a book about the Spice Girls.Yuck.

Coupland's odd humor and appreciation for his country blend well
You don't read Coupland for content, and you certainly don't read him to understand where he is coming from.Coupland is best read as a collection of highly eclectic - and in this case, almost loving - insights of a country he knows well.Like his previous book on Canada and the one on Vancouver, all of these stand as weird, human, insightful snippets of Canadian life.Its like a large relish tray - good snippets, but not all toyour personal taste.

a great little book
My familiarity with coupland prior to Souvenir of Canada primarily stemmed from Generation X and his City of Glass (his loveletter to Vancouver).Unlike his novel, Souvenir is utterly sentimental--even when seemingly critical.Not being Canadian, yet quite interested in Canadiana, I found Souvenir to be interesting on several levels, and I found myself not only enriching my knowledge of Canada, but also reflecting more deeply on the area in which I grew up--not so much America as a whole, which is a point inferred in the book as well.It's style makes it vastly readable: a series of photographs with relatively short passages with varying degrees of topic digression, yet all quite appropriate.I have often found myself picking Souvenir (and Souvenir 2) up again and again, thumbing through and randomly reading sections.I don't know what it is, but Coupland seems to have the knack for inviting the reader into a world and being a great host while you're there.

I might only add here that recently Coupland loosely turned his Souvenir books into a film of the same name, made somewhat in the same style.The film was great but does not include everything in both the books.

Clearly Canadian (though we're not alike!)
This collection of imagery and musings from Famous Canadian Writer Douglas Coupland didn't always strike a chord with me.I'm from a different part of the country, with different history and experiences, of course.

Yet enough was oddly, eerily familiar to convince me that there are few young writers better qualified to comment on the State of Our Nation than Coupland.Not as enjoyable as his fiction, but something fun to tide us fans over while we wait!

Like most souvenirs - neat but often misplaced.
I read this book in two sittings.The photograph compositions where clever and did evoke familiarity - good and bad - about Canadian images and icons.Coupland's ramblings though, are insights that I believe all Canadians feel or have felt at least once in their lives.Ironically I think this book would have the greatest resonance with non-Canadians, although judging by the few American reviews posted, this suggestion may prove to be a stretch.

Fun and truthful
After two years living in Appalachian Kentucky it was a delight upon my return to Canada to read this book. Somehow it summed up everything that I feel about this land, and much that irks me as well.

The book probably resonates most with people of a certain age, especially those who are male and from the West Coast. Coupland is only a few years younger than myself, and a lot of what he described seemed very familiar.

What Is It With Those Canadians, Eh?
I consider myself a friend of Canada and Canadians and I'm fascinated with the differences and links between Canadians and Americans.Here, novelist Douglas Coupland throws in his two cents on the subject presenting two volumes of an encyclopedic list of places, events, and things both everyday and profound and their relevance to defining Canada and Canadians.Coupland is a funny and thoughtful observer and i learned a great deal from these books.There are two volumes: Souvenir of Canada and Souvenir of Canada 2.

Your may not agree with everything, particularly if you are a Canadian, and Coupland's is one perspective among many, but it is a perspective well worth spending some time with.If the subject interests you, you need to read these books.

Yes, there is Canadian cool. . .
What a delight!Since leaving the Buffalo area last year I've been getting my Canada fixes vicariously, and this book did the trick nicely this month.Familiar, yet alien, alien, yet familiar.The idea of the "Canada House" is brilliant (and a brilliant piece of environmental art, to boot).Pick this one up if for no other reason than it's a cool coffeetable book that will confuse your less travelled friends. . .

Quirky but real.As a Canadian from the same era I can totally relate to what he describes.A really great book to give to Americans to explain who we Canadian really are.

So, what constitutes 'Canadian culture' and elements of Canada? one of his best
This is my second favorite Coupland book, my fave is LIFE AFTER GOD, but HEY NOSTRADAMUS comes close, and like all of Coupland's books entertains while at the same time making you think. Very similar to SILLY LITTLE RICH GIRL, by Jimmy Gleacher, if you like that kind of writing.

One of the worst books I've ever read
I read this for a book club. The reviews here and the jacket blurb intrigued me. The jacket blurb was the best writing I found between these covers.

The characters are two-dimensional and interchangable. Their prose and dialogue is the same no matter who's speaking. No one was developed well enough for me to care what happened to them and each narrator was more sanctimonius and vapid than the last.

The dialogue is incredibly bad. No one talks like this, especially not the teenagers in part one (narrated by Cheryl).

Each character preached at me and, given their choices in their cardboard lives, I didn't appreciate it. I expected it from Reg but from Jason? And from Cheryl? I read her section eagerly, looking forward to watching her die, terrible as that sounds.

What would have helped this story was focus on... anything, really. There are scenes and plotlines that begin and go nowhere. The key to this book could have been the fathers/sons: Reg, Jason, Kent, the twins and Cheryl's unborn child. In his section, Reg says that Jason can never know his pain, having never been a father. That's all the attention the subject is given and all we can do is bristle and read the few remaining pages. Meanwhile readers know this isn't the case. But we don't get a great enough sense of this being the key to Jason's life, we don't care and subsequently what could have been an interesting aspect of the story from a literary standpoint is wasted.

On the good side, it's a quick read b/c there's little to think about and nothing to challenge the reader.

There's a reason this book is out of print.

I DID NOT LIKE IT
THis book kinda sucked.It went on and on and on and on and didn't really have much of a point except to say that mass killing of teenagers ruins a lot of lives which isn't exactly a big epiphany though.I found Cheryl to be a big phony, Jason was depressed yet extremely self-centred, and Heather was just a very insecure person who needed intensive therapy to help her see that she deserved to be treated well and shouldn't stay with people who can't possibly meet her needs.

THis was just a book about a bunch of messed up people who continue to mess up their lives and then mess up the lives of everyone around them.

It had tragic overtones, obviously, just mostly I thought it was just pathetic.
