Product Description
This second issue of Bald Ego unloads fresh food for thought onto the periodical table with a fertile editorial mix of the raw and the cooked, pure and impure, sacred and profane, unvarnished truth and shiny fiction--not to mention edible metaphors. Co-editors Max Blagg and Glenn O'Brien have once again assembled a potent catalogue of talented artists and writers to create a document that clearly reflects some of the anxieties and ecstasies of our age--perhaps in the hope that the balance will once again shift to the side of ecstasy. Contributors to this issue include Larry Clark, Lynne Tillman, Andre Martelor, Mary Gaitskill, Burk Uzzle, Richard Hell, Nick Tosches, Sean Mortensen, Cecily Brown, Justen Ladda, and many others, each responding in their own singular fashion to the beauty and madness of the 21st century.

Edited by Glenn O'Brien and Max Blagg.

Product Description
And How is the winner of a 2006 Xeric Grant and employs somewhat surrealistic, extradiagetic, framebreaking moments alongside a sparse narrative presumably about the lives of a small rural family. The graphic novel presents this family in a collage of scenes involving Bigfoot photography, bees, planes, and book burning among others. It is a fun and and cryptically intelligent graphic tale about what it means to be alive in the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gregory P. Corso, Not Gregory Corso The Beat Poet
This is not a review, rather it is a warning to prospective buyers who think the book is by the Beat poet Gregory Corso because it is both listed under his name on and used by Amazon to recommend books by the poet.Gregory P. Corso, the creator of this book, is a cartoonist who draws well and frequently uses minor changes in his story panels, that initially appear repetitious, and patterns similar to the art of Escherto convey foreboding in the routines of three characters as they explore their identities and sense of belonging. The book is a very brief, but strangely interesting, and the drawings are stark; powerful; hypnotic, and haunting. Again, Corso is not the poet Gregory Corso and his book is in no way associated with the Beats. ... Read more

Product Description
Francesco Clemente has, since the 1980s, been a leading artist in the international revival of expressionist figure painting and sculpture. Clemente's subjects--rooted in both the physical and the surreal, spiritual worlds--create a vast body of work that appeals to diverse audiences. Clemente draws upon a pan-historic web of impulses, mediating among the myriad cultures of the ancient Mediterranean, Byzantium, Europe, India and America. Stylistically his work recalls the Italian Renaissance, Indian miniatures, European Romanticism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Clemente's widespread cultural interests and nomadic lifestyle--New York is his home but he spends part of each year in Italy, India and the New Mexico desert--have deeply affected his art. This lavishly produced catalogue accompanies the first major survey devoted to the painter.Edited by Lisa Dennison.~Essays by Robert Creeley, Rene Ricard, Ettore Sottsass, Gregory Corso, Raymond Foye, Allen Ginsberg, Craig Houser, Jyotindra Jain, Gita Mehta, Francesco Pellizzi and Gus Van Sant.Hardcover, 10 x 12 in./504 pgs / 292 color 20 BW0 duotone 0 ~ Item D20379Amazon.com Review
This finely wrought, lush, 500-page volume does justice to the wide-ranging oeuvre of one of the most open-minded, ambitious, and productive artists of the late 20th century. The catalog of an exhibition at New York's Guggenheim Museum in the fall of 1999, it contains a wide range of writings, including Robert Creeley's haunting poetry, a thorough chronology, and half a dozen essays, including the introductory "Once You Begin the Journey You Never Return," by the Guggenheim's Lisa Dennison. In accordance with Clemente's paintings and drawings, the book touches on themes from Indian mysticism, prayer, the body's pores and orifices, family bonds, and a number of metaphysical and physical concerns, being and nothingness among them. In the essay "Rooms," Francesco Pellizzi draws a long thread through cave painting, Meister Eckhart's sermons on the soul, Renaissance Rome, and Clemente's wall paintings to arrive at "the transmodern sense of a shifting place of origin; every step, every station, is the first and last in this vortex, a maelstrom animated by an eros that is enveloping and inevitable but also, in the end, joyous...."

Clemente's art, which lays bare his obsessions with sex, self, and spirituality and explores them with a constantly surprising range of intense color and formal invention, stands in bracing, deeply pleasurable opposition to the desiccated, design-bound, theory-driven work that has dominated so much art of the last 25 years. Art historian James Elkins has described making graduate students copy, stroke for stroke, works by Monet and other painters, to give them a feel for "What Painting Is" (as he titled his recent book). Clemente raises the stakes a notch, demonstrating what painting might be, if we were to allow ourselves to be drenched in its myriad possibilities. --Peggy Moorman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars heavy selection
Francesco Clemente is my Patron Saint of Paint! So why four instead of five stars shining bright in the night sky? It's missing a whole series of pastels that happen to be a favourite. I count 16 of them. Otherwise, this collection outweighs everything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stellar Volume
Perfectly perfect -- This catalogue of Clemente expects total satisfaction of the senses to achieve self-definition.
And it gets it, definitely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any collection of art and book lovers
I was lucky enough to catch his show at the Guggenheim several years ago and have been desperately coveting this book since.Clemente works on a large scale, so capturing his imposing imagery can be tough (to be mild). However, in an endeavor to capture the man through his works, this large-scoped voluminous edition works wonders at the foot of the mountain. The best of the attempts, it's like a conversation with the man himself.

A must have for art lovers, a must have for romantics, a must have for any library or coffee table. It's a lovely book, full true color, and a ripe collection of his works. A good work, and well worth anyone's time.

5-0 out of 5 stars art, love, and beauty
Clemente quoted De Chirico once in an interview with Vanity Fair, "What Shall I love if not the enigma." Clemente's paintings, indeed, exhibit a mysterious charm that invites the viewers into the artist's inner world of Indian mysticism and physcial beauty. Juxtaposed with Robert Creeley's poetry, this volume of fantastic and sensual paintings clearly is a must for all Clemente fans. From Napoli to New York, Clemente has wooed the jet-setters on both sides of the Atlantic, establishments such as the Guggenheim in New York, and me, a Yale College student. ... Read more

Product Description
With new interest in poetry as a performative art, and with prewar experiments much in mind, the young poets of postwar America infused the stage with the rhythms and shocks of their poetry. These energies manifested themselves all at once, and through the decades have continued to grow and mutate, innovating a form of writing that defies boundaries of genre. THE KENNING ANTHOLOGY OF POETS THEATER: 1945-1985 documents the emergence, growth, and varied fortunes of the form over decades of American literary history, with a focus on key regional movements. The largest and most comprehensive anthology of its kind yet assembled, the volume collects classics, long out of print rarities and texts from unpublished manuscripts. Copiously annotated, it will be an indispensable reference for students of postwar American poetry and avant garde theater. Included are works by Jack Spicer, John Ashbery, Michael McClure, Diane di Prima, Amiri Baraka, Hannah Weiner, Barbara Guest, Sonia Sanchez, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Carla Harryman, Charles Bernstein, Leslie Scalapino, Kathy Acker, and many others. A unique feature of the book is its editors' notes even on works omitted but falling within the anthology's purview, including Pedro Pietri's The Masses Are Asses and Jessica Hagedorn's Tenement Lover. Erudite yet highly readable, the plays and prefatory matter offer a highly entertaining glimpse of the ways in which poets have used the theater to widen their audience, develop new techniques, or negotiate their aesthetic community's precepts and desires. In the process, some of the most mature and progressive work within and about the theater was produced, and is at last gathered in one place. ... Read more

Excerpt: Hubert Horatio Humphrey, Jr. (May 27, 1911 January 13, 1978) served under President Lyndon B. Johnson as the 38th Vice President of the United States. Humphrey twice served as a United States Senator from Minnesota, and served as Democratic Majority Whip. He was a founder of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and Americans for Democratic Action. He also served as Mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, 19451949. In 1968, Humphrey was the nominee of the Democratic Party in the 1968 presidential election but lost to the Republican nominee, Richard Nixon. Humphrey was born in Wallace, South Dakota. He was the son of Hubert Humphrey, Sr. and Ragnild Kristine Sannes, who was a Norwegian immigrant. Humphrey spent most of his youth in the small town of Doland, South Dakota, on the Dakota prairie; during his years living in Doland the town's population was around 700. His father was the town pharmacist and a community leader; he served as Doland's mayor and as a town council member. In the late 1920s a severe economic downturn hit Doland; both of the town's banks closed and Humphrey's father struggled to keep his drugstore open. After his son graduated from Doland's high school, Hubert, Sr. left Doland and opened a new drugstore in the larger town of Huron, South Dakota (population 11,000), where he hoped to improve his for...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=42636 ... Excerpt: Irwin Allen Ginsberg (pronounced ; June 3, 1926 April 5, 1997) was an American poet who vigorously opposed militarism, materialism and sexual repression. In the 1950s, Ginsberg was a leading figure of the Beat Generation, an anarchic group of young men and women who combined poetry, song, sex, wine and illicit drugs with passionate political ideas that championed personal freedoms. Major literary works of the Beat Generation include the novels On The Road by Jack Kerouac and Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs, as well as Ginsberg's epic poem Howl, in which he celebrates his fellow "angelheaded hipsters" and excoriates what he saw as the destructive forces of capitalism and conformity in the United States. The poem, dedicated to writer Carl Solomon, has a memorable opening: I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed bymadness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawnlooking for an angry fix... Howl made Ginsberg famous because of a 1957 obscenity trial in which a San Francisco prosecutor argued it contained "filthy, vulgar, obscene, and disgusting language." The poem seemed especially outrageous in 1950s America because it depicted both heterosexual and homosexual copulation at a time when sodomy laws made homosexual acts a crime in every U.S. state. Howl reflected Ginsberg's own bisexuality and his ho...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1017 ... Read more
