Product Description
Cicero lived through some of the most turbulent years in the history of Rome and witnessed first-hand the overthrow of the republic and its replacement by the tyranny of Pompey, Caesar, Mark Antony, and Octavian. One of Rome's most memorable and keenly observant writers, his letters to friends and family are an astonishingly detailed record of daily life and politics in Rome. Here is the largest one-volume selection of Cicero's letters currently available, documenting Cicero's tumultuous career and providing a month-by-month record of the final collapse of the Roman senatorial government. Covering the years 68-43 BC, the letters illuminate events from the high point of Cicero's consulship of 63, through the humiliation of his exile and subsequent subjection to the dynasts, to the assassination of Caesar in 44, and Cicero's brief hour of glory in leading senatorial resistance to the tyranny of Mark Antony. In P. G. Walsh's lively new translation, Cicero's correspondence brings to life once more all the intrigue, excitement, and danger of ancient Rome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily life of the Roman Elite.
Cicero's 'Letters to Friends' has three volumes in the Loeb Classical Library. In volume II there are three main subjects: the civil war, the illness if his secretary Tiro and the divorce from his wife Terentia. There are also other topics like travels, books and domestic pleasures.

I find the letters to his secretary the most interesting because Cicero shows himself here as a caring human being (in contrast to his cold and formal attitude towards his wife).
In general though The Letters have a tendency to rhetorics and are therefore often longwinded and sometimes a little boring. ... Read more

Product Description

Contains Cicero’s De Oratore and Brutus, influential sources over the centuries for ideas on rhetoric and training for public leadership.

The De Oratore, written in 55 B.C., argues that rhetoric is socially significant because states are established and maintained through the leadership of eloquent men.

The three books of dialogues in this volume feature discussions between well-known figures in Roman history, including Lucius Crassus, Marcus Antonius, Quintus Lutatius Catulus, Quintus Marcius Scaevola, Caius Aurelius Cotta, Julius Caesar Strabo Vopicus, and Publius Sulpicus Rufus.

The Brutus continues the theme of the dialogues, giving a history of eminent orators whose performances exemplify the Ciceronian theory that rhetoric finally adds up to leadership.

5-0 out of 5 stars learning from the wisdom of the ancient thinkers
Cicero provides us all with an opportunity to discover what matters when stepping up to the podium in academic or public debate. Throughout this carefully translated book lies the wisdom of the ancients which all of us in public and private life ought to consider... "the means by which the minds of men excited or calmed" (On the character of the Orator:47) or how to use the power of metaphor so that..."but bring some accession of splendour" (on the character of the Orator:237). For anyone studying law politics or discourse this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a mouthful!!!!
This is considered by many to be Cicero's magnum-opus of his career.Whether it is or not is a topic of debate. What is outside the jurisdiction of debate is that it is a landmark work in the history of oratory.

In it Cicero details the various oratorical techniques which should be employed by the master of elocution.Such topics as eloquence, delivery, word choice and accessability of diction are discussed. Each view and counterview is presented by a different interlocutor, in the Platonic tradition. We even have none other than Julius Caesar lecturing on what Nietzsche would call the "uses and disadvantages" of invoking humor during serious orations. One of the primary issues which comes under consideration is the level of erudition of the orator.Should the individual be well versed in sundry fields of intellectual endeavor (such as the philosopher, perhaps?)?Does the ability to invoke virtually any academic pursuit aid in getting one's point across?Or, does this only lead to a person with an overly and unnecessary pedantic approach to oratory - one which stocklists various irrelevant points to the topic at hand?If so, is it better for the speechmaker to be less well rounded in his studies, and instead focused solely on the subject matter of his parlance?Cicero takes the question up at great lengths.

Within the dialogue myriad allusions are made to such household names as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Pericles, Isocrates, Democritus, Hesiod, Demosthenes, Cato the elder, Anaxagoras, Valerius and Scipio Africanus, as well as a multitude of less well known names which would be recognized only by the most learned classical scholars.A general knowledge of Greaco-Roman history up until the time of Cicero is highly recommended before engaging this text.

The second part of the book is entitled "Brutus; or Remarks on Eminent Orators."This is supposedly taken from a conversation which Cicero actually had with Brutus and a few other mutual friends, in Cicero's own words "in a private lawn, near a statue of Plato" (p. 268).In it Cicero extols the great Roman orators of the past and (as in "Orators") extends his criticism against the sophists. He also pays homage to his own teacher:Molo of Rhodes. One comes away with nothing less than an awe of Cicero's vast knowledge of the history of elocution.

This book is a must read for philosophers, scholars of antiquity, lawyers, politicians and all others who own the task of swaying the opinion(s) of the masses.Oh, and by the way, it's a pretty good read for those who aren't interested in any of that stuff, too.8-) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fast and Fun Read
Cicero, Kyle. "Mark Julian Vampire P.I.: The Case of the Strega's Touch", The Nazca Plains Corporation, 2009.

A Fast and Fun Read

Amos Lassen

I am back checking on Kyle Cicero hoping that he did not take my first review too hard. In this volume we learn that Jean-Claude, the crown prince of the werewolves has disappeared and his enemy, a vampire by the name of Tortego is suspected of kidnapping him. What awaits us now is a war between werewolf and vampire and Tortego looks to Mark for help. Mark is quite busy with problems of his own especially with his romance with Vincent Pasquale. On top of that Vinnie's mother wants Mark to find out who murdered her best friend's dog.
There is a lot going on here and it is all fun. The novel moves quickly and the characters have matured a bit since the preceding novel in the series. If this is what we are to expect from Kyle Cicero then I must say he is doing just fine. Cicero used historical facts to give his book what it needed and it made reading this a great deal of fun. The story itself is quite simple and as it moves along it picks up steam. All in all, I have to say that I enjoyed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Reading
Because of an extraordinarily busy theatrical schedule, I'd not been able to finish "The Strega's Touch until very recently. What a difference in editing! I wish I'd marked down the specifics, but there were only a couple of moments that I caught an odd phrasing or misuse of punctuation, so they really didn't disturb the flow of the story nor the entertainment it provided! Since others have discussed the plot, I'll not encumber this review of the same.

The pace was much quicker, the characters, now familiar, have warmed their way into my heart and I'm enjoying their interactions and devotions, and in some cases, their exasperations with one another.

I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the short, bonus story as well, "The Case that Marked the Beginning". I'm a big fan of entwining historical characters, real or fictional, within another story. Although it was predictable, to me, many of the upcoming events in the story, (I don't want to spoil it for others) reading along with it all was an enjoyable romp!

I have to say, I was stopped, albeit briefly, by the combining of a military rank androyal title, in using the name, "Colonel Baron".

I look forward to another, possible return to the past, perhaps finding Mark Julian working with the illustrious Sherlock Holmes, during his earlier days, when he'd not know his celebrity. Does the cocaine addicted detective ever surmise who the young man helping to solve the mystery they embark in? Could Professor Moriarty be one of the supernaturals, and if so, of which kind? Where would Dr. Watson and Mrs. Hudson fit in? And what of the Baker Street Irregulars? So many possibilities! Wikipedia holds some excellent references that could easily be incorporated to a future project.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to checking out your other titles seen at the end of the pages and at Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better than the First!
As I was reading this second instalment in the Mark Julian series, I felt that the author had hit his stride! Mark and human lover Detective Vinnie were back as well as Mark's delightful secretary sex demon - incubus Jaime. This character is a wonderful edition to the series and played a major role in this story.

The author again drew on historical facts to flesh out his story which I think added a lot of flavour and dimension to the novel. Even our charming incubus dressed as a woman from the fourties!

Tortuga, the obnoxious unmoving disciplined vampire who is head of the Head of the Council vampire is even more of a pain in the ...! But he was a member of the Spanish Inquistion........so no wonder it's his way or the highway - even to-day. So with this historical link we can see how the author tells us a lot about this character!

Of course Mark (or Marcellus) as Tortuga stills likes to call him also has a great backstory dating from ancient Roman.

The story was wonderful, the characters excellent and the reading fast-paced and interesting. No disappointments in this book and even a couple of short stories from another era thrown in for good measure.

I highly recommend this series for those looking for something a little different in the gay vampire detective stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much better effort.
I was reticent about reading this book because the previous Mark Julian volume...well, while it was fun, it needed some editing and focus.I'm pleased to say this book has all of that, albeit in a manner not intended by the author, I'm certain.

The story is simple -- Mark Julian, vampire detective, is hired to find the killer of a much-beloved dog, a job he sloughs off to Jaime, his sex-changing assistant. Then Tortego, the head of the vampire clans, demands Mark find Jean-Claude, the werewolf prince he's had arguments with.It seems he's vanished and war is threatened between the curs and the bloodsuckers.Naturally, the two stories connect in ways both expected and not.

This story rockets along, leaving little time to dig into the characters' psyches...but that's not really a problem in a book of this sort.Mark and Vinnie have a nice, if surprisingly easy, time sparring about getting married and why Vinnie used Mark to placate his mother and such, but they wind up being supporting characters in this book. It's Jaime who runs the show, half because of who he/she is and half because of her emotional connection to Jean-Claude; you actually wind up rooting for her to "win" while Mark and Vinnie all but hand the story over to her.Jaime deserves a series of her/his own after this performance.

You now, I could see this being made into a fine movie. It reads more like an elongated script than a real mystery.I wonder if that's what the writer does in his day job?

Anyway, it is an enjoyable time and this time I have no quibbles about the grammar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Et tu, Jaime?
I read the first book in the Mark Julian series and enjoyed it, but "...Strega's Touch" is even more fun and just as fast a read.Vinnie's planning for a wedding and Mark's taken by surprise -- not just at the nuptial planning but at the fact that his soon-to-be-mother-in-law's brought her best friend to hire him to find out who killed her dog.At the same time, the head of the vampire clan in NYC demands Mark find out what happened to the prince of the werewolves, who's disappearance is threatening all-out war between vampires and werewolves (unlike in "Underworld", the critters have an uneasy coexistence here).Of course, Jaime is involved -- this time as a glam 40's goddess in WW2-movie clothing (for some reason I'm picturing "Gilda") -- who stumbles into the middle of everything despite Mark's and Vinnie's best efforts, and it's a total joy of a ride.

It's obvious from early on who the bad boy is, but that doesn't stop the surprises from coming. And Jean-Claude makes an elegant kidnap victim; he has a surprising sense of decency and honor about him that makes you care for his fate.Kyle Cicero's writing is solid and fast; no extraneous trips into the human psyche here because they tend to bog down the story. And there are a few moments of sharp eroticism that come from nowhere. The only problem is...and it's not really a problem except for one thing -- Jaime takes control of the story, she's such a hoot.I don't think it's necessarily BAD for characters to fight to take center stage in a book, but right now Jaime's up on points so if Mark Julian wants to keep his series about himself, we need a bit more Mark Antony and little less Julius Caesar...since we know what happened to THAT guy.

I understand a third book's coming.Can't wait. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading
What makes Cicero's courtroom strategies so impressive is the fact that he never bothers to dispute the evidence against his clients. In both the defenses of Roscius and Cluentius, he doesn't even use a single witness. He doesn't offer contradictory evidence or waste much time with alibis. Instead, he focuses his entire arguments on the most critical part of the case - motive. In both trials he successfully creates such compelling versions of the events that all remaining details became irrelevant to a jury who believes there was no motive. His speeches are fantastic illustrations of a whole swath of Robert Greene's strategies in The 33 Strategies of War: Control the Dynamic, Weave a Seamless Blend of Fact and Fiction, Take the Line of Least Expectation and so on. Cicero's work is filled with so many applicable examples and fables and syllogisms and his name still carries such weight that I really leave each of his books with a ton of material I use for other things. This is one of those books. You should read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The real deal
I purchased this in order to follow Cicero's career as it has been documented in somewhat recent fiction. It is always a very good idea to go to original sources and in this case the idea holds true.Since I don't read or understand Latin I was, of course, at the mercy of the translator, but the works seemed quite alive and will help someone who wants to see if the current fiction works about Cicero are accurate (see Robert Harris, for one).I'm sure my Roman History teacher re-reads these frequently. ... Product Description
M. Tullius Cicero was a prolific writer, his writing covering an astonishingly wide spectrum: oratory, letters, epic and didactic poetry, pamphlets, philosophical and rhetorical treatises. He was also a major political figure at Rome during the Late Republic. The relationship between these two facets of his career is the subject of this book, which argues that our understanding both of Cicero’s oeuvre and of the practice and theory of public life in the Late Republic is transformed if Cicero’s writings are read
as a unified whole in the context of Roman politics.

Writing offered Cicero a huge range of opportunities to impress himself upon an audience much wider than could be reached through the traditional mechanisms of politics at Rome; it also enabled him to construct a distinct identity in the public sphere as a substitute for his lack of political ancestry.

A chapter on genre sites Cicero’s writing in the late Republican context and stresses both his inventiveness and his flexibility; then the ways in which Cicero’s public personas and his relationships with others are articulated in his works are considered; the book concludes with a consideration of the connections between writing and failure, both
personal and political. ... Read more

Strategically located seven miles west of Chicago's Loop, multifaceted Cicero is one of the oldest and largest municipalities in Illinois. In the late 19th century, this unique industrial suburb developed as an ethnic patchwork of self-sufficient immigrant neighborhoods. Since the Roaring Twenties, when mobster kingpin Al Capone set up shop there, the town has often been characterized by corruption and controversy. Yet the Cicero story continues to be full of promise and adventure, vision and accomplishment. As its population has shifted from heavily eastern European to predominantly Hispanic, Cicero remains a vibrant community where residents maintain strong civic pride, work ethic, and family values. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Some are angered. Some are hurt. Some seek revenge.Who will triumph?
This third book in the Mark Julian vampire detective series delivered another knock out punch with its familiar characters plus some new ones. Who can't love the pure evil of bad angels nor the dynamic purity of God's angels like Rahael or Michael.

The power of good and evil battling it out on earth was given new life by Kyle Cicero!..and I'm only talking about Vinnie Pasquale's mother and her Italian friend cornering the archbiship into pressuring him to bless the marriage of Vinnie and Mark! Those two could easily have done battle with the two evil and cruel angels created by Cicero!

This latest assignment is the most difficult of Mark's career and the repercussions shake Mark to the core. Now Mark and Vinnie face new challenges which will be dealt with in the next book in the series that has even more interesting characters. People have been hurt, murdered and there is still dark intrigue afoot.

Cicero's skill at fleshing out his vampire and werewolf characters and taking us from their own dark past into present day New York City engages the reader with each new and challenging assignment Mark Julian faces.

Many are angered. Many have the power. Many can be hurt. But who will triumph?

A wonderful series with no disappointments. There ever increasing cast of characters only add to the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dark and brooding, and not always nice
Some very nasty kids from the dark side of hell're looking for the Archangel Michael's sword to tear open the curtain of hell, and Mark Julian, vampire detective, has been hired by none other than God's own representative to chase the little demons down.Of course, this comes at the exact moment he's having to plan for his wedding to Vinnie, his formerly straight cop, and deal with the help of his soon-to-be mother-in-law, a woman who can even manipulate the Catholic church. And quickly follows the blood, terror, horror, dollops of some fun sex (and seriously not-so-fun sex) and a startlingly dark shift near the end.

I like Kyle Cicero's writing. He's fast and to the point, even when he takes time to delve into Mark's own history and how he was turned. And he lets out some of Mark's own darkness, dealing not just with the evil creatures he's chasing down but also as regards Jean-Claude, the werewolf prince betrothed to Jaime; they got my inner GRR going. And the ending...it's heart-stopping what happens...and is to be continued in book four.To tell you any more about the story would be to spoil it.

Y'know, vampires are big, right now.And they made the Donald Strachey books into decent enough movies.Oh...I just had a thought...Chad Allen as Mark.OW!Hot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun read - suspense, humor, sex, vampires!
I love this series."The Case of the Heavenly Host" is dark, suspenseful, funny, and surprising - to the very last page.Kyle Cicero really ups the ante with the introduction of dark angels Jason and Angelique, his sickest, most twisted characters yet.Their evil agenda takes them on a destructive tour of New York City.Private eye Mark Julian is hot on their trail, but catching up to them brings its own set of consequences, and nothing and no one will be the same.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Two sweet, little old Italian ladies give the homophobic clergy something to cry about. The Rita Hayworth-sexy sex demon, Jaime, is on a quest for the perfect 1940's-inspired wedding gown.Mark is suddenly in charge of planning his own wedding.Tortego grows a heart - at least, we think he does.Hunky werewolf Jean-Claude gets naked. And there are vampires.Love it!Can't wait for the next one.

I've just received, and returned, volumes 1 and 2.These books are riddled with typesetting errors. It's apparent that they were typeset by an optical scanner and not proofread: misread characters, misplaced paragraph and page breaks, superscripts and related footnotes misconstrued... totally unreadable.Unacceptable at any price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another great story for the vampire murder/mystery Lover
I loved the story!

Kyle Cicero delivered the goods in his wonderful characters of the vampire Tortega (from the Spanish Inquistion), Jaime the very hot sex-changing demon who dresses in the style of clothes from the '40's, her uber-sexy fiance a werewolf called Jean-Claude and Vinnie. The boyfriend and lover of Mark who is a broken man (can't give away the plot!)

I love the many characters that Cicero brings in as vampires from different parts of history. They are all interesting and make the story come alive and add to the storyline, far as I am concerned.

There are many threads laid out in this story that will take the reader happily to the next book which I am looking forward to reading!Murdering vampires by other vampires is never taken lightly. Two powerful leaders are now in New York in a game of 'who can spit farther!'

Mark has demons to kill on the outside and Vinnie has demons on the inside.

There is never a dull moment in his wonderful series!

I recommend this series to anyone who is interested in a good vampire series with lots of interesting characters, plots and all laid out in New York City.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something wicked this way comes
Well, Kyle Cicero does NOT like love, not the way he keeps messing with it.And that's half the fun of the latest installment of his "Mark Julian..." series. This one is set around a critter convention, where vampires are suddenly being hunted down and slaughtered by someone who does NOT have the world's best interest at heart. It's also hurting the standing of top precinct captain, Tortego...I mean, head of the clans in New York City...so he calls Mark in to find out who's doing the murders and stop them by any means necessary.Problem is, Vinnie and Mark are on the outs and Mark's not in the best shape to do an investigation, so it's up to the intrepid Jaime and her stud werewolf prince, Jean-Claude, to kick his rear into gear.

This story holds the usual blend of fun and fear Kyle Cicero's put in the other tales, but I'm a bit let down by one aspect of it.At the end of the third book, we caught a glimpse of Mark Julian's true vampire nature and...well, me being the kind of guy who lives for his characters having both black and white souls...it held some major promise, but Kyle Cicero dumped on it with little more than a one-sentence reference to what didn't happen and I felt a bit cheated.Of course, when I was watching "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" religiously on TV, I kept shrugging off Angel as a goody-goody until he shifted back to what he truly was -- a killing machine without heart or soul -- and only THEN did that bad boy get interesting to me, and his and Buffy's struggles from that point were brilliant...right up to the point where she had to kill him and send him to hell.Maybe I was hoping for a repeat with Mark...oh, not the sending to hell part, just the struggles.Especially since he's got the hots for the very hetero Jean-Claude (and who could blame him?).Oh well.

Still fun and an easy read. And obviously something wicked in en route in the next story.Looking forward to it. ... Read more

Product Description
This book, originally published in 1967, is a critical description of Cicero's political life and influence during the last years of the Roman Republic. The author explains the important issues which confronted the Republic at the time and shows how it moved to civil war and its own destruction. He reveals the difficulties which a man without background and newly come to political power had to face. Professor Smith assesses Cicero's aims and his contribution to the politics and policies of the last years of the Republic, and explains how his influence in Rome and Italy enabled him, in the months from the end of 44 BC to his own death, to rally the country's forces against Antony. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

The third and fourth books of Cicero's Tusculan Disputations deal with the nature and management of human emotion: first grief, then the emotions in general. In lively and accessible style, Cicero presents the insights of Greek philosophers on the subject, reporting the views of Epicureans and Peripatetics and giving a detailed account of the Stoic position, which he himself favors for its close reasoning and moral earnestness. Both the specialist and the general reader will be fascinated by the Stoics' analysis of the causes of grief, their classification of emotions by genus and species, their lists of oddly named character flaws, and by the philosophical debate that develops over the utility of anger in politics and war.

Margaret Graver's elegant and idiomatic translation makes Cicero's work accessible not just to classicists but to anyone interested in ancient philosophy and psychotherapy or in the philosophy of emotion. The accompanying commentary explains the philosophical concepts discussed in the text and supplies many helpful parallels from Greek sources.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best compendium for ancient theories of emotion
The five "books" (just one in our sense of the word "book") "Tusculan Disputations" of Cicero are dedicated to existential questions like "Is dead something evil?" oder "Do wise men have emotional perturbations?" The answer of the first question cited here is crucial for emotional states, for instance fear of death. In this way this first question is subordinate to the second. M. Graver picked therefore Book 3 and 4, which are concerning with grief and emotion in general, as central parts of Ciceros work and translated them carefully into English, with useful subdivisions and an excellent commentary. Of extraordinary value is the introduction, which enables the reader to get insight into the discussions of the various schools of philosophers, and most surprising is the collection of material in Appendix A to D, which shows part of the sources (we dont have all sources at hand), which Cicero used for his - in general - independent work. You can recommend this edition especially to students who are concerned either in ancient philosophy or in historical studies of psychology. ... Read more

Product Description
As consul in 63 BC Cicero faced a conspiracy to overthrow the Roman state launched by the frustrated consular candidate Lucius Sergius Catilina. Cicero's handling of this crisis would shape foreverafter the way he defined himself and his statesmanship. The four speeches he delivered during the crisis show him at the height of his oratorical powers and political influence. Divided between deliberative speeches given in the senate (1 and 4) and informational speeches delivered before the general public (2 and 3), the Catilinarians illustrate Cicero's adroit handling of several distinct types of rhetoric. Beginning in antiquity, this corpus served as a basic text for generations of students but fell into neglect during the past half-century. This edition, which is aimed primarily at advanced undergraduates and graduate students, takes account of recently discovered papyrus evidence, recent studies of Cicero's language, style and rhetorical techniques, and the relevant historical background. ...
