4-0 out of 5 stars Very Cute!
I still love the original book in this series (Brown Bear) best for the cadence of prose and rainbow of characters, but Baby Bear is also a delightful book to have around. It's probably my second-favorite in the series. My daughter (9 mo) seems to pick it up more than most of her books (it's in about the 10th percentile).Though whether that's because she loves the animals or just the color yellow, I couldn't tell you.

I really like that the animals in this story are wild animals from my continent (though it does seem to be a bit more Western-focused than Eastern -- e.g. mule deer instead of white-tailed deer -- this surprised me as I know Eric Carle has his museum in Western Ma, so I was expecting the fauna to be more local, but it's no big deal, we'll just have to take our daughter to Yosemite some day).I also like the ending a lot, where the momma bear sees all the animals including her baby bear looking back at her.Very cute!

My only reservation about the book, if you can call it that, is that I can't seem to read it without feeling stilted.I think it's because of the frequent but not uniform use of the word "by" (e.g. "I see a striped skunk strutting by me."I keep thinking, "do they mean that the skunk is strutting past or strutting near?"The word is used on most of the pages, but not all, and it either feels as though it should be more thoroughly mixed up, or that it should be "by" in every instance.

Obviously, though, these are the ramblings of a mother and not of the target audience. She seems perfectly delighted with the characters in this story and their actions, be they "by," "near" or "at."

In summary: it's a cute book. You should get it for your baby, especially if you're trying to pass on a love of the great American outdoors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Bear Baby Bear
This book was purchased for my three year old greatgrandson. When he came to see us the first thing he asked for was read Baby Bear.So I got him his own copy.He still loves it, as did his older cousin. She is four and I have a picture of her with her cousin on her lap reading (memory) Baby Bear to him. I think it maintains it's appeal for the older children (four years) because they can memorize it and feel like they are reading themselves. This is a great book for two to four year olds and appeals to both boys and girls.

I love these books - wonderful illustrations and fun for kids... Plus in a board book, virtually indestructible!

4-0 out of 5 stars Future Librarian reviews "My Very First Book of Shapes
In his acceptance speech for the ALA Laura Ingalls Wilder medal, Eric Carle referenced that he appreciated a description of his books as being "literature for the not-yet and just-about-to-be-reader" (Carle, 2003, 424). This time, Carle is teaching his almost readers about shapes through reincarnations of familiar characters from his other stories (the watermelon from a caterpillar reminiscent of the infamous Very Hungry, a friendlier version of the Grouchy Ladybug) to demonstrate shapes.Value contrastis applied to make the black shapes on the top part of the split book format jump off the page. A greater variety of shapes than expected (think crescent or squiggle) are introduced.Parents can use the book to engage children in a dialogue about other familiar objects that may be the same shape. It would not be useful in practicing print awareness, because the nature of the book does not encourage a child to begin at the start of the book, but being able to start the book on any page may capture the attention of the young audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter enjoys this!!
Just for a little background info on me, I have a BA in English as well as psychology. I worked as a children's library assistant for my first four years out of college. I'm also a mommy to a precious 2 year old daughter, Claire. Claire loves flipping through this book and although I'm not sure how much she's getting intellectually from it, she sure has fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
It is one of the best introduction to shapes books I've seen. It has a wider variety of shapes than most books do. Each shape is also labeled and with the variety of shapes, beginning readers will be introduced to words they may not have had to read before. For instance, Sean has now learned the word almond. Of course the book has the lovely paper collage illustrations by Eric Carle which gives the book a vibrancies and personality. Finally, the book is a matching game. The pages are cut in the middle with a Carle illustration on one half and a black silhouette on the other half. Readers of the book are asked to match the black shape with the Carle picture. As the shapes aren't in order the book is somewhat challenging than a more traditional shape book.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
My 10 month old daughter, Kylie is starting to show interest in the book which means that in another week or so she will be staring at all the pages. It's a good book for children to learn shapes from.

4-0 out of 5 stars FROM A GRANDMOTHER'S POINT OF VIEW
A VERY GOOD BOOK FOR TEACHING SHAPES...MANY SHAPES AND THE HALF PAGES YOU CAN PLAY NUMEROUS GAMES....WHEN THEY GET BORED THEY CAN STOP & PICK IT UP AGAIN TO START WHEREVER... DO NOT HAVE TO START AT THE FIRST PAGE ....GREAT BOOK TO START AT THE BACK & WORK FORWARD ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Holes is not the same as Hungry
I question the quality of this translation.Fait Des Trous is not the same as Hungry.I'll have to check this out and and be more cautiousin the furure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but what with the title translation ?
Great book. I had it when I was a kid (in French).
My daughter is now enjoying it in English and Spanish, and will get the French version as well.
Question remains as to why "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" stayed "La Oruga Muy Ambrienta" in Spanish but became "La Chenille qui fait des trous" in French (The caterpillar who makes holes)... Nothing wrong with "La chenille qui avait tres faim!" in my humble opinion.
Great work anyway by Carle, like other books we enjoy (Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story to have in French, but cheap edition
In general, I am not a big Eric Carle fan. Some of his books I do not care for at all, while others I do like. This one, however, I think is wonderful. It is my favorite of his books.I like how it incorporates the days of the week, different foods, and the life cycle of a caterpillar.I like that my toddler can learn all these things in French, and he likes being able to put his little fingers through the holes made by the hungry caterpillar.I think this is a GREAT book to have in one's French children's library. The only thing keeping me from rating it five stars is the quality of the binding. It appears to be very flimsy/cheap, and I seriously wonder how long it would last if I allowed my three-year-old to look at it on his own.I really wish Amazon would offer this classic in hardcover, or at least in a better quality paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars La Chenille Qui Fait Des Trous
La Chenille Qui Fait Des TrousLove it!Exactly what I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for French instruction, but am I saying it right?
I'm a language teacher (Spanish) and am bilingual. My goal is to introduce our four children to French as well as Spanish, so I'm taking a stab at doing all the things I suggest to other parents for learning Spanish. It's hard, when you don't know the language! I worked through Flip Flop French: Ages 3-5: Level 1, which comes with a CD, the first two lessons, and then read this book with the children, and they enjoyed it (we have it in Spanish and English as well.)

I'm writing this review today because I heard the boys (4 and 5 years old) sounding out the words, and saying..."wait, you don't say the end in French, just in Spanish." So, it's working!

I do hope I can find an audio version, though, as I know my French accent probably sounds very Spanish!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book simply shouts the word `lively' and will be a family treasure for years to come!

March winds and April showers

Bring forth May flowers.

- Mother Goose

Many of us have wonderful childhood memories provided courtesy of Bill Martin. No, you say? You might remember Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See? How about Chicka Chicka Boom Boom? If those two titles don't ring a bell, just head to your library and take a look at a few of the hundreds of books he penned. When you see them, I'm sure you'll have one of those "aaaaah" moments.

This anthology of children's poetry was put together by Bill, along with the help of his friend Michael Sampson. Eric Carle, the illustrator of Brown Bear and many other of Bill's stories, wrote the introduction. There are almost two hundred of their favorite poems, illustrated by numerous, highly talented artists such as Henry Cole, Chris Raschka, Laura Logan, Nancy Tafuri, Aliki, Dan Yaccarino and more (if you can believe that!) Topics include animals, the world of nature, around the year, people and places, school time, me and my feelings, family and home, food for me, nonsense and, of course, Mother Goose.

This book is destined to be a modern day classic and, if it hasn't already, will probably rival or surpass the Golden Books Family Treasury of Poetry in popularity and sales. This book simply shouts the word `lively' and will be a family treasure for years to come. The binding has been reinforced, most likely with the expectation that it will see plenty of use!

5-0 out of 5 stars This takes me back to my childhood!
I grew up with Eric Carle's books and know anything with his name on it will be great. I was not let down. The poems that were picked are very good and the illustrations are top notch. This book would be ideal for young children, though there is something for everyone to enjoy in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big & Wonderful!
This is a very beautiful book to share with one's family. The poetry is a very enjoyable collection well worth the investment, but the illustration is what makes this book so wonderful!I have enjoyed reading this with my girls, and will continue to enjoy it for many years to come!Terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars How did I ever live without this?
Children's books written in verse seem to be making a come back.Works like Brian Lies "Bats at the Beach" remind us of the wonder and pleasure we all took as children in wonderful rhyming books.Yet too often, people underrate their children's ability to appreciate poetry.

This tremendous treasure of a volume brings back so many wonderful memories of the poetry my parents read to me and offered me the opportunity to read with my children and grow their love of language. To the editor's credit, he did not choose a selection that in any way reads "down" to children, but with poems by Frost, Dickenson, Hughes, and Stevenson, instead sought to lift them up to wonderful heights.

Will your child love all of these poems?Of course not. What he or she will however enjoy is the diversity of the pieces. Moreover, the varied and beautiful illustrations are sure to move even the smallest imagination to new flights of wonder.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Three Year old Loved It -- so at our house it's a hit!
I've bought several books of kids poetry before and they have not been a hit.My son can't close the book fast enough when I bring one out.But we both loved this book.Becuase the poems are grouped in themes, he felt like he was getting stories read to him -- and he would ask for one more page.Because the poems are really wonderful, I don't mind reading them over and over. And anything by Eric Carle is huge in our house.Good book -- give it a look! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not an entertaining story - a little irrational
The beginning talks about a baker and what he does, which is good. Then Carle brings in an unjust Duke that tries to banish him for no good reason and thinks up of a silly task for Walter to save his home. Then it goes into talking about pretzles. It was a dumb story.I don't recommend it.I would have given it one star if it weren't for the illustrations.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to show injustice in this world to your kid, read this book
I started out reading this with my son, he enjoyed it immensely, till Walter's cat knocked over the milk. From here on out the book took a turn for the worse.Walter having no milk improvised his baking with water, the pompous Duke and Duchess noticed his baked goods did not taste as good as always. These nut jobs, who are equivalent to Iranian Ayotollahs, call walter to their attention at once and about to exile the guy for not making their rolls to perfection. This part I don't get because for years they have loved this guys work and one minor mistake they are basically going to destroy this guy's life, who is going to make their rolls if this guy is gone? Eventually the duke has to show a little mercy by giving the baker at the time what seems like an impossible tasks(how very fair of the duke). Of course Walter completes it and everything goes back to normal. The moral of this story is if you make a minor mistake you will have your whole life turned upside down unless you invent a pretzel in that case you can live with the knowledge that if you ever make another mistake the totalitarian dictator and his cruel wife will decide your fate.In that case maybe the moral of the story should be if you live under a repressive dictatorship, do nothing to please anyone and they will never find fault in you.Instead of making children's books teaching are children to be mindless servants to people who I would much rather spit in the eye, maybe Walter should have poisoined the Duke, taken his wife as a trophy and freed the people from tyranny. Awful story, I do not recomend Walter for anyone

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool!
Ah, the story of the famous pretzel! And to think that it was done by accident! (Somehow I doubt the truth, but it sure makes for an interesting story!) This book was funny and clever, a cute idea of how the pretzel just might have been formed. Eric Carle's illustrations are incredible and funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walter the Baker
This is a great children's story by Eric Carle. My granddaughter had me read it to her over and over again. She is three. I think it's a great book for preschoolers because it is a simple story and has great illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walter the Baker
Walter the Baker by Eric Carle is an excellent resource to have in your classroom for all elementary students. It is the story of a well-liked baker, Walter, who makes amazing sweet rolls that the Duke and Duchess love to eat every morning.Except one night, Walter's cat spilled all of the milk he needed to make the sweet rolls and had to use water instead!Needless to say, the Duke and Duchess were not happy, and threatened to banish him from their land forever.Walter's only chance of staying was to make a great-tasting pastry through which the sun could shine 3 times. At the last minute, Walter did it...the pretzel! The Duke and Duchess loved it and let him stay in their land. This book can be used in many different ways in the classroom. It can be used as a fun story to tell young children, a lesson on cooking/pretzels for 2nd-3rd graders, and even a social studies lesson on the caste system of the rulers and the workers for older ementary grades.I recommend this book to any teacher to have in their classroom! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buying a second and one as a gift -- love this book!
I'm also buying a replacement -- this is a sturdy little book but as it's a favorite of my 2 yr. old, it's seen some love! I'm getting one as a gift, and another for my infant daughter since it's been such a hit. It's great for first words, and teaching colors as well!At one point, my daughter's little friend (1.5 yrs. old) went through the entire book by himself, "reading" the animal names and making their sounds.... just an overall wonderful book, and the tiny size is an asset!I think they love it even more since it fits in their little hands, much like a block.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buying a replacement
This is my one-year-old's favorite book. The book is two inches cubed with 11 "pages."Each page is about a quarter of an inch thick. The size is perfect for his tiny hands, and the very thick pages are easy for him to turn, despite his limited coordination. He can turn the pages of other board books, but only a few pages at a time. This one he can easily get to every page.In addition, the paper binding makes it so the book just flops open--it's not at all rigid like most board books.Unfortunately, my son has loved this book so much that he's torn it in half, and what's left of the binding doesn't hold the rest together very well. It's such a great little book than I'm buying a replacement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Really small!
I had no idea that this book was so small.I would have liked something a little bigger for small hands to hold. The illustrations are of course cute and it is appropriate for vocabulary, but a really tiny book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 1-year old loves it!
I bought this for my 1-year old to use on an plane. It's a very small (3 in.), cube-shaped board book with only 10 "pages."Each page shows one lovely animal illustration from Eric Carle's "The Very Busy Spider" book.My son had fun turning the pages and playing with the book in his hands. When he would open a page, we'd read the name of the animal and make the accompanying animal sound. He loved it (especially the pig). This was considerably more entertaining to him than a normal board book, as the shape/size were just right for his little hands. It held his interest much longer than I expected.Plus its small size makes it very easy to bring in a diaper bag or purse.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome advent calendar
I love this advent calendar and so did my daughter. You open the folio to expose a pop-up of a brightly colored tree with presents and a big santa. Each day has a special ornament that you hang on the tree - some ornaments are to be put in the pop-up present boxes. I enjoy Eric Carle's stories and art, so this was a perfect match. I get tired of advent calendars that deal with food or just have some text to read behind the doors. My daughter couldn't wait to see what ornament was next. I saved it to do it again next year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magical Holiday Fun
I bought this calendar for my 3 year old son and he loved it.He really liked the idea that each day he got to put another decoration on the tree.My only wish was that there was an easy way to re-use it other years.I have saved all the little decorations/gifts and will just figure out how to put them in their little numbers next year. The calendar is of great quality and looks so cute.

Almost everyone has heard and come to love Aesop's fables as a child. It's fun to hear someone retell the fables in their own words and it is even better to listen to a child guess the moral of the story. The inimitable Eric Carle has done the beautiful artwork and retold eleven of these tales for a new generation of listeners.Of course children can read these tales, but it is always more fun to listen to a storyteller's rhythmical voice relate a tale. How many of these tales do you remember and can you still hear the voice that may have told you the story?

The Lion and the Mouse
The Wolf and the Dog
The Fox and the Crane
The Cat and the Mouse
The Monkey and the Fox
The Rabbit and the Turtle
The Wolf and the Lamb
The Frog and the Ox
The Blackbird and the Peacocks
The Fox and the Crow
The Grasshopper and the Ants

The illustrations are unique and endearing. The stories, done in Eric Carle's own "voice," have a slightly different twist, but essentially remain the same as the classic tale. For example, the moral of The Lion and the Mouse is usually said to be "Little friends may prove great friends."In Carle's slightly different rendition it is "Friends come in all sizes and shapes."The print is fairly small and might be difficult for the young reader. This book would be a marvelous read aloud book in a classroom or homeschool setting."Do not try to be something you are not."Can you guess which fable this moral comes from? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An OK book
My 2 year old likes to look at this book and count the different things. But, the pages are only half pages and you have to match up the numbers to the fruit. It's just a little difficult to read to young kids.It would be more fun for kids a little bit older.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Cute Book!
We used this as part of a gift to the library! The book is super cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting numbers matching book
This is a little advanced for my 1.5 year old, as the top and bottom of the pages turn independently and you are to match the number with the picture. But it is sturdy and the colors are bright and I know he will enjoy it when he is older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nearly perfect - can you find six lemons?
We originally checked this one out of the library - and instantly knew that we had to purchase it. The book consists of a top half and bottom half for which the pages can be turned separately. Numbers from 1 to 10 accompanied by the appropriate number of black squares need to be paired with the picture with the same number of fruit on the bottom page. The number word (in bold) and name of the fruit are on the left hand side of the bottom pages. In addition, the fruit are of course, different colors with each of the primary and secondary colors represented at least once. What a wonderful way to expose children to multiple references for numbers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Learning Tool
This book makes learning numbers fun. The pictures are very colorful. Finding the items to match the number makes it a little more challening and fun. My granddaughter loves it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book!
We check out books at the library before purchasing any to see which ones my 11 month old daughter actually likes. She loves this one and always selects it to take home.I don't care much for the split page (that's why I'm giving it only 4 stars) but when I make the sound written down and match it with the animal it always makes her laugh. She has a short attention span so board books with long sentences are not as interesting at this point.Definitely looking forwarding to adding this to her permanent collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to par
This book is not up to the usual level of cleverness you'd expect from Eric Carle. The split page format might b good for a intermediate reader but for a toddler the format of mixing and matching written animal sounds with pictures of animals is strange.

4-0 out of 5 stars great baby/toddler/children's book
I love Eric Caryle's artwork and his books are very appropriate for babies and toddlers. The "very first" series is a must have for any parent's library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very first book of animal sounds
I ordered 14 Eric Carle books because I loved his hungry catapiller, polar bear and brown bear books however the 14 others I ordered were very disappointing.I never have time to go to the post office or else I would have returned every single one including this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic collection
Children enjoy reading along with the story. Eric Carle has developed these stories with a rythem children enjoy. I would like to see the exact measurement of the set to judge the actual size and not just the weight. I thought the books would have been taller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for baby
I bought this book set for my 1 year old. We had borrowed my nephew's Brown Bear and my won loved it. Would recommend for sure (and it is nice to have something other than just Brown Bear all the time!).

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't know - hasn't arrived!
I ordered this book (which I love!) on December 19th. It was to arrive at the home no later than January 13th. It is the 21st and it still has not come. I'm not very pleased. This was supposed to be a gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great books but a little repetitive
I think our 18 month old loves to play with the box more than sit with us and read the books.lol.I think it may be a little too repetitive and too many pages when reading more than one of these titles, right after the other, as she gets quickly bored with it and runs off with the box this 3 book set comes in.She may get more interested as she gets older though, when she gains more patience and learns more animals... as she always stops us on the "Cat" page, or "Bird" page, to point and say what they are.Otherwise, a simple, pretty fast read.

She really loves That's Not My Kitten (Usborne Touchy Feely) and That's Not My Bunny: Its Tail Is Too Fluffy (Usborne Touchy Feely) books.Like I said, it may just be her age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Preschoolers

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrible!
I received this as a gift for my son, and found it absolutely horrible. It has the usual beautiful Eric Carle art, but in the story the snake eats other animals, spits them out, and then ends up eating himself.I like to think I am pretty flexible with children's books, but trying to explain to my child why an animal would eat himself it too much! (The book I have is in German.) ... Read more
