Eric Carle first published The Very HungryCaterpillar in 1969, fully intending to create a series ofinteractive creature books for children. The beloved busy spider, quiet cricket, and lonely firefly booksfollowed, but the artist's quest was not truly complete until TheVery Clumsy Click Beetle was born. The Very Clumsy Click Beetle
This book was very entertaining. This book also went over how to try again at something we may not be good at. My child got the concept of this from this book!
Very colorful pages and great sound effects for the clicking sound version at the end of the book!

Very cute and teaches about bugs
It's a very mellow story about the plight of this click beetle.It's great for bedtime.The story has a bit more fluidity than a typical Carle book, which is why I liked it.The click beetle talks to different bugs/animals, which are different from the typical farm animal book that are a dime a dozen.It's a great book for toddlers.

Interesting topic
I love bugs and I thought this was a perfect and unique book to read to my daughter. She enjoyed it a lot. The book makes the clicking sound at the end and I like that the pages of the book are a lot thicker than normal books.I still prefer Eric Carle's other works.

Another great one by the great Eric Carle!
In the world of children's books.....this guy is king! (and no, I'm not getting paid to say this :D) I'm such a huge fan of this talented author who has generated a plethora of extremely appealing concept books - all with eye-catching illustrations and entertaining features.This one has a clicking noise that comes at a pivotal point of the story (oh man, I hope I didn't just spoil this for any of you).How appropriate for this little click beetle who spends the entire book trying to learn to click and flip (rough life, huh?But, who am I to argue with survival mechanisms?).This book is more than just clicks though.There is a wonderful theme of perseverance running throughout this story, vivid illustrations that make you want to run your fingers over and over them, lots and lots and lots of repetition (yes, even though this can drive adults absolutely CRAZY, kids thrive on it).Also, Carle's books typically include a grammar lesson (shhhh.....don't tell the kids).Here we have so many wonderful verbs introduced by the supporting characters:a turtle who ambles, a snail who slithers, a mouse who scurries.Who else but Carle could make the story of a simple click beetle beautiful and fascinating?Do me a favor.Buy every one of his books and keep them on your bookshelves forever.Your future nature-loving child will someday thank you for it.

He loves the "kick beetle"
My two year old son LOVES this book. He likes to read along and make the CLICK sound by himself on each page. Towards the end when the book makes the clicking sound he gets all excited. He wants to read this book everyday. Even if he's crying I'll pull out this book and he'll run and sit down next to me to read it. We're big fans of Eric Carle and have 5 of his other books with two more on the way! The message in this book is wonderful. The other animals offer encouragement, the wise old click beetle offers guidance, and the very clumsy click beetle never gives up. Great book! ... Read more

a classic story
The story and pictures are in the classic style of the author. The book it's self is a lot smaller than I had invisioned.

Good take along book
Yes, this book is small, so it's perfect for our little take along tote filled with things to keep entertained when we go somewhere there is a wait, ie Drs Office. My daughter has loved this book for a long time, and now at 6 yrs old she can finally read it by herself. It's a great book, not sure why others don't like it.

Tiny Tim's book (i.e., very small)
This book is small - it's pocket sized.I was surprised to see this because the other books I've bought from this series are larger - they are at least six-eight inches in one direction.

For Your Consideration
We own several of Eric Carle's books. "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?: 40th Anniversary Edition (Brown Bear and Friends)" was one of our son's favorites. We would read it every day. We received "Do You Want to Be My Friend?" as a gift. The book itself is small, which can be great for little readers or a disappointment to those who expect a larger book like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar: board book & CD". The illustrations are what you would expect from Eric Carle. The book's message, however, compelled me to write this review.

The book's story tells of a mouse who happens upon tails belonging to different animals asking if they would like to be his friend. Each animal simply tells the mouse, "No", followed by a description of a significant difference between the animal's tail and the mouse's. Finally the mouse asks another mouse who also has a small gray tail just like the mouse. The mouse responds, "Yes". We interpreted the message as one of intolerance, discrimination, and bigotry. Perhaps someone can discern a different message. Certainly the story can be seen as representative of certain aspects of reality. We just don't find the story appropriate for the age of the intended audience and would not choose this book for our early readers.

Wonderful bedtime book for toddlers
My son (now age 3) has loved this book for 6 months, as have we. It is a sweet, unusual story illustrated in the same colorful, enchanting way that all of Eric Carle's books are. In looking at a few reviews by others I was floored to read that some took exception to the illsutration of the nude couple or felt it necesitated a warning; my husband and I never thought twice about showing that image to our little son, and our son certainly isn't bothered by it in any way. In any event, I hope parents won't be too startled at the thought of a single page containing discreet nudity to consider sharing this book with their children - it would be a terrible shame if they did. This is a delightful book for bedtime.

What do do about the couple picture..
As a kindergarten teacher I was worried showing the "nude" picture of the couple - although I would not have hesitated to read it to my own child. I was worried about parents objecting. What I did so I could use it in the classroom was to have our art teacher use a permanent marker & actually draw swim trunks or shorts on the male & a bikini on the female. I'd hate to do this to an expensive hardcover book - but my paperback edition is now suitable to show to primary level students, without any worry of parental objections!

Sweet story
I really like this book as does my 2-year old.Be warned a kind of (tasteful) naked picture of a man and woman (creation story).

One of my favorites to read
The paintings/illustrations in this book are classic Eric Carle and are actually on a bigger scale than many of his books.They are glorious and beatiful and in his completely unique style.

The story flows really well and can easily be seen as a religious tale.But, like the Chronicles of Narnia, it can be read just as a straightforward story, too.

Yes, the first time you read the story, if you aren't ready for it, the picture of the naked couple will catch you off guard.That isn't the usual fare for a children's book (although potty training books have no problem showing the same thing on children).The drawing is not highly detailed and almost impressionistic.So, if you are worried about that, be sure to preview it before you buy it and read it to your child.If you aren't aware of it, your reaction might only emphasize it more for your child and then they will focus on it, possibly in a way you don't want.

If you like Carle and his style, you'll probably like it, especially the drawings.The story is simple but can lead to discussion with older children about its meanings.

10 Stars for Eric Carle
This book is well written and well illustrated. I feel sorry for the children who will be steered away from this story because of closemindedness. The adults seem to really be the ones who are uncomfortable with the illustrations.

Check the book out & judge for yourself. The illustrations are very tasteful and the 'anatomically correct' parts are really not that anatomically correct...at least I've never seen any nudes that look like the illustrations in the book!

Baby's favorite
I have been reading this book to my daughter since she was about 9 months old.She loves it!The animals make great opportunities for you to make their sounds or use sign language.It's a bit long for a young child, but she will sit through it, then ask to be read to again.All the tabs to move the pictures are very interesting for her.Just don't leave it alone with them!We originally bought this at a store but she got ahold of it once and tore it to pieces.Tears streaming down her face asking to read it still.I was so happy to find a replacement on Amazon.Some of the pieces stick a little when trying to move them, and it isn't as nice of a copy as my original, but the baby was VERY happy to see the book again.Just keep it out of reach of little hands!

A fun interactive book with humor
This book is enjoyable to read. I especially enjoy the laughter that my grandaugher expressed as she reacted to this fun interactive story.

It seems the message here is, "there's no place like home"; reassuring for toddlers, to be sure, but somehow a bit sad and disappointing, too. This small board-book edition is crowded with Carle's trademark illustrations, stunning in color and form--but also with wordy text and counting graphics in the upper right corner of each spread. Excellent book!
Love this book! Rooster's off to See the World encourages counting, friendship, learning about different animals and the fact that there is no better place to be but home. This is a great bed time story book!

Adding and subtracting book - created from the author's heart to help others.
Each page has a small block that shows you the animal and the number of animals starting off and ending with rooster. Cool book and as per usual cool illustrations!

Eric Carl created this book for children like himself when he was young. On the last page of the book, Mr. Carl says " this book is for the child who has thee difficulties with numbers, specific symbols, but also for all children who are getting acquainted with numbers."

A Great Counting Book
I used this book for a story time with a rooster theme. It is a counting book that teaches the concept of addition and subtraction. Rooster sets off to see the world. Along the way he meets two cats, three frogs, four turtles, and five fish. Since Rooster has made no plans for food or shelter, as night falls his traveling companions go home. The book is illustrated with Carle's usual large, gorgeous collages. It worked very well with a group of forty preschoolers.

I rate this book at a five. It teachers childrenhow to be nice, and care and treat others with respect. Any child I think could read this because what it teaches is a good lesson to young ones.The book to me was actually pretty good.

Beautiful book but the story is a little sad *sniff*
I recently purchased a six pack of Eric Carle books because my six year old loves his illustrations.Included was the story Rooster's Off To See The World.The colorful artwork is visually stunning and captivates both of my children who insisted I read it NOW!

The story tells the tale (with lots of repetitive text) of an ambitious rooster who sets out to see the world.He leaves his cozy home safe behind to embark on his trip.On each page he picks up a few new friends who are also seduced by the temptation to "see the world".Unfortunately, rooster isn't all that bright and he forgets to make plans for basic necessities like food and shelter.So when the sun goes down rooster and his new friends are cold and hungry.They all begin to complain.Soon, rooster's fair weather friends begin to desert him (the turtle's even leave without bothering to say goodbye!).Before long poor defeated rooster is left all alone.A dejected rooster ponders his mistakes, takes a short nap and heads back out to his cozy home without seeing much of the world at all and the book comes to an end.

Both of my kids lingered on each beautiful page instead of rushing along to see what happens next in the story as they usually do.My sensitive four year old said she felt very sad when this story came to its end because Rooster's so-called friends left him alone but my six year old enjoyed it.He particularly enjoyed counting all of roosters new friends who appeared in little boxes in the upper corner of each page and said he'd like to read it again so it's a keeper for my son, anyway. ~ Laurie Shallah ... Duck Delight!
Delightful book with a button at the end of the story for little fingers to press for a duck quacking sound.My only caution is that this is a large heavy hardcover 9" x 12" (not a boardbook) too heavy and awkward for little pre-schoolers.And because the pages are large, they are delicate and can tear easily, so parents may need to assist their young ones when turning the pages.

Our Daughter's Very Favorite Book
We are big Eric Carle fans and surprisingly, my daughter likes this book even more than The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has been a long standing favorite at our house.This book is always checked out at our library and as soon as we check it out somebody else puts a hold on it. Since this book is our daughter's absolute favorite, I guess it's time to fork over the 15.00 dollars and get our daughter her own copy.

Even though our 2 year old daughter is just learning to count and doesn't know her left from her right she is fascinated by every page in this book which introduces numerous concepts in a natural eye-catching way.Her favorite part, of course, is the quaking duck at the end of the book (there is a button that makes a quaking sound when pressed).

As a home schooling mother of 4 and former pre-school teacher, I highly recommend this book.

Eric Carle has done it again.His cute story is paired with his incredible illusrtrations.Children love it and that's what books are for!All you need is a rubber duck or ten and a tub of water (hey, it's bath time!) and you have a recipe for laughter and fun.

Two thumbs up...one big and one small
In July of 2003, award-winning children's author and illustrator Eric Carle saw an article about a 1992 shipment of rubber ducks that fell off of a ship and traveled throughout the world. Well, he just couldn't resist writing a book about those toys. And in that book, he tells the story from their manufacture, through their loss, and on to the adventures that the ten little rubber ducks had.

The book is richly illustrated, in that bright, realistic/not-realistic style that Eric Carle is famous for. The accompanying text is very interesting, showing so much in so few words. The many different fates of the ducks, provides for some interesting reading, keeping my four-year-old spellbound. wonderful book
I bought this book for my 6 year old son who loves Eric Carle books and also loves to draw and color.This book was a huge hit.He had the entire book colored the same day he received it.And we ordered the other Eric Carle coloring books.It is a great product because you get the real book, but have your own childs coloring.Also, there is a page in the back with a picture of Eric Carle, and a place for your child to put their picture.This type of book is a great idea and really involves the children in the story.

Great for kids who love Eric Carle's books!

Baby's bedtime book
We received this as a gift from my niece who loves panda bears.It is now my daughter's favorite book for bedtime. However, we did not receive the board book. I think she also likes the fact that it's not a board book!Of course, Brown Bear is amazing too.

Best of the series
A favorite of our 18-month-old since she was less than 1.Only problem is she likes flip through it faster than I can read.

Panda Bear
As a teacher I found this book extremely useful, especially since I had a lot of New Entrants this term. The text is very predictable and this builds up confidence and self esteem very quickly.

A fun and engaging book
We initially checked this book out from our local library. My 6 year old son was so thrilled and mesmerized by it that I had to make it a purchase. He absolutely loves the tricks on the eyes that the book teaches and is so enthused to share this book with others. Another hit by Erick Carle!

Great Lesson on Light
I purchased this book to use with 7th grade students to do a lesson on light. The students got a kick out of it. I love being able to use picture books as much as possible within the classroom.

Cool, and Educational!
I have always loved Eric Carle's books, but this one is a particular favorite.First of all, it involves a fox (which happens to be my last name), but it also handles a subject most children's books don't touch - opposite colors.You could even use it for older kids to teach about the cone cells in your eyes, but for little kids it's a really fun "optical illusion" that helps them see the opposite colors.It's art, it's science, and it capitalizes on a child's curiosity.

Visual fun!
This short book is an excellent tool to use in a psychology class, in the area of biopsychology, and study of the brain, sensation, and perception.It is a fun book that engages the students immediately - no matter what age level they may be!

a stunning book about matching colors to different animals - the book is divided in half so you can keep the word "red" at the top, then flip through the book to match everything that is red - Eric Carle is, as usual, wonderful

not as good as My Very First Book of Numbers
We checked this one out of the library after buying My Very First Book of Numbers. Unfortunately, it's not quite as good. First of all, although black, white, pink, and brown are represented, the color orange is missing - how can you skip one of the secondary colors?! Secondly, at least in the copy we saw, the fire engine is a muddy color somewhere in between red and brown (and definitely does not match the bright red color square). Finally, it would have been nice if the colors had been arranged in the order of the spectrum rather than randomly. This really had potential, but fell short.

Pictures are nicely illustrated. Simple and clean. The only complain I have is the letters/words are not big/bold enough. My 2 years old daughter has been learning colors for a few months and she looks at the book and points out the colors. She also enjoys to look at the pictures and asks questions. Not good for me....
This is a VERY simple chart, but expensive. I don't like it at all. :(

easy to store and update
Honestly, we keep our kids' growth charts and look at them when we pull out mementos years later- they don't need an expensive wooden board, this does a great job, paperboard in a fake book jacket that lets you store it easily on a bookshelf.There are stickers to mark milestones (I'm using ink as well in case stickers don't stick in 20 years) and 20 years from now my kid will not care at all that I didn't spend a fortune.

Nice chart
I love the illustrations on the chart.I laminated it before I hung it on the wall because it's made of card stock, so I hope it will last a long time.I think my son threw the stickers away, though, because I can't find them anywhere.But they came in a nice book that should be a great place for others to store their stickers.

Good Product
It is sturdy cardboard with places made for it to fold up, so after our son outgrows it, we can easily fold it up and put it in the little cover it comes in and store it somewhere to treasure it for years to come :) It comes with stickers to mark the height, we are also marking on the back for good measure in case something happens to the stickers. It's Eric Carle so it's not so babyish as a Winnie The Pooh one might be, so we're hoping he won't object to it being in his room for several years. We haven't hung it yet, but we're going to use 3M Poster strips and a few of those should do the trick.

Fabulous!
This is a great 'journal' for parents who want to record the most precious information and moments of their child's first year. Obviously, this book does not function as daily diary. If you are looking for a diary this is not the book.

One of our favorites . . .
Eric Carle's "Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?" is a new classic, from my point of view. As a licensed preschool and elementary school teacher, I KNOW that repetitive books help young children learn to read. I am currently teaching a class of 16 two-year-olds. Their favorite books are colorful and predictable - just like "Does a Kangaroo..." I love to watch them grin as they shout out, "YES!" as I turn each page. I agree that this might not be a favorite of older children, but the one-to-three year old population thinks it's a hit!

great book!
we got this as a gift when our son was born and he took interest to it around 18 months.he eventually memorized all the animals and could recite the entire book by heart.he would say the animal on the next page before turning it.it was so cute.at 2 1/2 yrs old, he still loves this book.this is a great learning tool and teaches children about mom/child relationships and the word "yes."we all love most of e. carle's books.

Wonderful Book for Preschoolers
My preschoolers adore this book, and I love that the repetitive language allows them to memorize it and "read" it to themselves.

I like this book beacuse it gives my 2 year-old son lots of practice saying, "yes" instead of his usual "no."AFter we read the book, we use the pattern established in the story to ask each other about other animals not featured in the book.For example, "does a cat have a mother too?" "Yes!"

I find the book very entertaining and informative at the same time.I actually get to know many of my favorite authors and their illustrations and their stories behind their creativity.An eye-opening piece, really.

Love this book!
I have to confess I bought this book for my 4 yr. old daughter and ended up keeping it for myself! It's still in the family so I think it's okay--besides I think she's a bit young for it! I bought it because I thought it would be inspirational for my young daughter and as I started reading through it I found it inspiring myself. I love the way the artist's talk about their experiences with art.I also enjoyed looking at the art they created when they were young. Many of the artists also give bits of inspiring words for the young artists to think about. I think this book would be a wonderful gift for a young inspiring artist or anyone who enjoys art!

Sometimes a really creative artist has vision beyond himself and philantropic urges to propel him. "Artist to Artist: 23 Major Illustrators Talk to Children About Their Art" is just one product of the merger of these three qualities in Eric Carle, children's book writer and illustrator.

But wait, there's more. He and his wife developed and built a museum called the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Boston. Here the art of the picture book from around the world is celebrated. From the website comes this statement about fulfillment of the mission--"...by collecting, presenting and celebrating the art of the picture book from around the world and by providing interactive experiences and programs that are engaging and educational." One area Carle most values in the museum is the art studio where visitors (activity geared toward children) can actually create a "masterpiece." If you adore picture book illustrations (as I do), then visit the website for its treasures.

A second enterprise that sprang from the concept of "Artist to Artist" is the degree program with Simmons College, also in Boston. A student could earn a master's degree in Children's Literature or a joint art/literature/writing degree. The proceeds from this book go directly to the museum. Even if there were not a museum, this book alone is a treasure in itself! Because Carle's desire--with talent behind it--to create art began in childhood, he conceived the idea of an anthology of picture book art dedicated to children who also discover the talent and desire to create art. He cites his mentors and tells children that they can think of this book as their mentors.

The 23 artists whose work comprises the pages of this book are certainly inspiring and exemplary. The layout for the pages of the first artist of the 23 is like the layout of the last one and all the ones in-between: A one-page letter to the reader/child--including a childhood picture of the artist, two pages of art, including a photograph of the artist's studio, and a self-portrait.

The first artist included in the book is Mitsumasa Anno (with whom I just recently became familiar) and the last is the collaborative team of Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart --the others in between are arranged alphabetically. I don't know why Sabuda and Reinhart are the last ones unless it is because they are pop-up artists. Perhaps they are placed last because their art is so different. I'm just guessing.

Here are statements from some of the 23 artists about their childhood dreams:

Mitsumasa Anno: "I believe that the culture that is part of your being from childhood is of great importance."

Eric Carle: "But I also try to keep an open mind, to listen to my intuition and allow for the unexpected, the coincidental, even the quirky to enter into my work."

Tomie dePaola: "I am just as happy as a lark that I am an Artist....But it is hard work....You have to practice, practice, practice--and don't copy."

Steven Kellogg: "One of the most fascinating things to me about drawing was the fact that I could create stories with my pictures."

Maurice Sendak: "As an aspring young artist, you should strive for originality of vision. No story is worth the writing, no picture worth the making, if it is not a work of the imagination."

Rosemary Wells: "Few people in this world can truly say they love their jobs and the meaning of their work. If you stay true to yourself and practice, practice, practice, you will have a life where you love what you do."

Oh so inspiring, so full of worthy quotes and childhoods rife with possibilities--the artists in this book, their lives and their work, make "Artist to Artist" a must-have book for teachers and parents, especially if you have an aspiring artist in your child--and definitely one or two for the school library!

My Most Requested Preschool Storybook
I was a preschool teacher for almost 20 years. I had a large collection of preschool storybooks, including this one. On those occasions when I would ask the children what story they wanted me to read to them, they would invariably choose Watch Out! A Giant.

The story is similar to the books Where the Wild Things Are and There's a Nightmare in My Closet in that it shows children overcoming their fears. The design of the book, similar to Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar is full of twists and surprises.

This book is very underrated, perhaps because it is not as appealing to adults as it is to preschool children. I would not have known how much children like this book if I had not asked my preschool class, "What story do you want me to read?"

Read all th way to the end of the story!
This is a weird book. I generally love Carle, but this was a little strange. My daughter is 2 and she was definitely too young for this book, though she did love the flaps, but for myself, the story is just a little odd. It doesn't flow well. Also, I know a number of people who said it was a scary book, it's not, you have to read all the way to the end to see the giant is make believe the whole time. So at least read it all the way through!

It is a good book to be used at bedtime story. I bought it to read in my preschool classroom. it is very slow and the students got bored by the third page of Panda bear.

Enjoyable CD!
My 2 year old loves listening to this CD!She is a big Eric Carle/ Bill Martin Jr fan, carrying the books around with her constantly!This CD is a pleasure to listen to, and it is great for when I am occupied and cannot read to her.

Yessssssssssss!!! a great buy, 8 books in one cd, plus bonus!
I would like this to be a practical review, because I almost don't buy this CD, since there is not much info about it and the tracks are not detailed, but it's oh so worth it!

**First four tracks are the books in English (Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, and Baby Bear)

**Tracks 5-8 are all four books in Spanish (It doesn't state whose voice it is, but she sounds like a native speaker, the lady is actually funnier than Gwyneth!)

**Track 9 is Bill Martin Jr. himself reading "Brown Bear" (I didn't like it, but it's interesting)

**Tracks 10 and 11 are interviews with Eric Carle.

So, I hope this helps! and, don't hesitate, go ahead and buy it! Think about it, you can look at the book you have, and hear the audio in Spanish, it's a great learning tool.

Pardo/Cafe-Clarification
Many reviewers are commenting that they don't use the word "pardo" for brown in Spanish, so I wanted to clarify this point. Yes, the commonly used word for the color brown here in the US is "cafe" (with an accent, but I don't know how to do that online!). The word "pardo" also means brown, but we don't ever use it in our daily language. However, the authors wisely chose to use this word, because the proper name in Spanish for a "brown bear" is "oso pardo." As in the animal--not the color. Check it out on Wikipedia: [...]. This is a great vocabulary-building lesson for our Spanish-speaking children!

As a bilingual kindergarten teacher I LOVE this book, and so do my kinders! After reading it, we always make a class book with our pictures: "Juan, Juan, ?Quien ves ahi? Yo veo Mariana mirando a mi."

Ok but not the best
I don't like the translation as pardo is not a word that I think most people in the US would use. Also this book just doesn't keep her attention like some others that she has.

Great Spanish Version of My Son's Favorite Book
My son's favorite book is Brown Bear Brown Bear, so I jumped at the chance to buy the Spanish version for him.He loves it.I can read it in English or Spanish (since I have it memorized).My son is 8 months old and we have been reading this book to him since he was born.It always brings a smile to his face.
