How does he do it?
I bought this book for my collection of art books for children.I also bought this book for me.I wanted to know how Eric Carle created such amazing illustrations.You can read this book and then experiement with children to make some incredibly fun art.It is a very unique way of producing art and the children can produce amazing "child-produced" masterpieces.I highly recommend this book for teachers, especially.Your students will benefit from your knowledge of Eric Carle's secrets to success and the children will love to look at the pictures in this book!

Great Children's Literature Art Book
The Art of Eric Carle is a wonderful book about the art of children's book illustration.It gives great biographical information on Eric Carle, one of the most beloved of children's book artists, and insight into achieving greatness in creating children's picture storybooks. For teachers of children's literature or potential authors of children's books, this is an indispensable volume.

The Art of Eric Carle
Eric Carle's autobiography was a pleasant surprise in the book.It was interesting and it showed a side of him we don't usually see.The war years in Germany were especially interesting.Seeing Hitler's Germany from the inside and seeing it through the eyes of a German boy was a new experience.

Eric Carle Rocks!
For those of you who love Eric Carle, his art and stories, this book is a must have.A "coffee table" book that allows you to enjoy and cherish the work of this very creative artist and author.Only thing better would be to have one of his original drawings!Reading Eric Carle with my sons when they were small was definitely one of our favorites things of the day.

wonderful read

This is just another wonderful book. The fact it makes noise is a bonus! I shared this title with another mom and told her few of Eric Carle books makes noise and she was amazed. Had to purchase this on for my son for Christmas, he can not get enough of this duck *quaking*

A fun Eric Carle book

"10 Little Rubber Ducks" starts with the rubber ducks being made in the machine.They are then boxed up and put on a boat.One box falls overboard and the ten ducks in that box take off in all different directions.They all encounter different things; for instance, one meets up with a polar bear, one with a turtle, and one with a flamingo.The last duck meets up with a flock of real ducks.

Cayden:"Why don't those ducks have eyes yet?"
Cayden:"Oh- I see!That guy paints the eyes on and the lady paints their bills."
Max:"Paint!"

Cadyen:"We have ducks like that in our bathtub!"

Cayden:"Let's count the ducks!"

Max:"Boat!"
Cayden:"The boxes full of ducks are going on the boat to go to other countries."

"10 Little Rubber Ducks" is a fun book by one of our favorite children's authors, Eric Carle.This version is in board book format which is great for the younger ones so they don't rip the pages.The book provides numerous opportunities to teach counting, directions, and different animals to your children.Cayden counted the ducks over and over again in an attempt to teach Max his numbers.The storyline is engaging and the simplistic illustrations are wonderful!The only issue that we had with the book was that the duck that you can push to squeak at the end was difficult to get to work.If you just push down on it, it does not squeak.After playing with it we figured out that if you tap it short, fast, and hard with the tip of your finger it works very well.

Some changes from the paper edition
We've been waiting and waiting for this book to come out in a boardbook edition.

It is a favorite of my children, but one is very young, and has accidentally ripped some pages in other books.

My first complaint is that the type seems kind of small, relative to other boardbooks by Mr. Carle and compared to the original version.

However, my biggest disappointment came with the surprise at the end.

I won't spoil it for everyone, but the format is "different" than in the original. It is cuter, and likely longer lasting, but it is a little more difficult to get it to work than the simpler mechanism in the paper book.

I'd *strongly* suggest that you look at one of these in person before purchasing it ...

More for me than my 2.5 yo
I read this book to my son last night.Few pages later, I looked at my 2.5 years old son; he had a blank face.This book tells a long explanation of how flour is made.I asked him whether he understands what is going on.He shook his head.Certainly, he, raised in the city especially, does not know what a stone mill is and so forth.However, I was fascinated by the story and read it till the end.It reminded me of a lot of that I have forgotten.It introduces a fundamental and important concept that one should know, such as your food is not magically made by one mom, but it takes many hands of many diligent people to be on the table.All that said, I will keep this book and keep reading it for my son, hoping that one day my son gets what is really in this story.

Another delight from Eric Carle!
My son (now age 3) has been riveted by this book for nearly 6 months. It is quite unlike any story I have ever read to him before, and is both educational and great fun. It is a delightful way to give children an understanding of process and where food comes from while keeping them intrigued and entertained. What's more, it will make all parents that much more grateful for modern conveniences like store-bought eggs and bagged flour!

A surprisingly interesting book
When Jack wakes up in the morning, he finds that he has a taste for pancakes, and he asks his mother to make him some. But, the mother is very busy, and Jack will have to help if he wants his pancakes. It's a surprise the amount of work that goes into making a pancake, but Jack sees it through!

This is a surprisingly interesting book. The story is fun, and the illustrations are nice and bright, but what makes this book so good is the fact that it challenges the reader to think about what lies beyond the world he or she sees at a glance. Children tend to see things as just appearing at their wish, but this book shows them that that is not really the case.

This is a surprising book, one that will make your little reader think about things that he or she never thought about before. My little reader and I both recommend this book to you and your little reader.

Big, durable flash cards
LOVE these. Love Eric Carle's art and the fact that these flash cards are so big and thick makes them withstand the wear and tear of a 2-yr-old.

Immediate WOW factor
These are really great quality and very durable.They are bright, cheerful, and so much fun.I am a language tutor and use them for kids and adults alike.I have written the names of the animals and the numbers, in each language I teach, on each flashcard.They are especially good if you combine them with the story books by Eric Carle, because then the kids recognise the characters!You can also tell a story with the flashcards.They have so many uses.VERY versatile. A "MUST HAVE" as they are such a valuable teaching tool.Everyone loves flashcards!!

Beautiful Indestructible art that could have used a little less flash in the flash cards
First off, let me start by saying our family loves Eric Carle.His books have been staples in my childhood and in my wife's childhood.One of the first books we received for our son was the Very Hungry Caterpillar.Our son enjoys that book immensely.

As for this particular set of cards, the set is almost perfect.The cards themselves are of superior quality.The cards are sturdy enough for our 5 month old to hold and to mouth.All of the cards are the classic Eric Carle artwork we've grown to love.As indestructible art, these cards excel.(The storage box is also of good quality.Both the box and the set of cards look like they will last a very long time.)

Sadly, I must subtract 1 star.As a flash card set, these cards do not aid in teaching numbers as well as they are beautiful to look at.Younger children do better with contrasting colors.Some of the flash cards could have provided better contrast in order for children to better distinguish the animals being counted.For example, the number 4 card depicts a parent fox with three kits (cubs) in a den.The den is surrounded by green grass muted by dark colors including reds.The kits themselves are a reddish color.It is possible to differentiate the number of foxes, but it is not as easy as some of the other cards.For example, the number 2 card has two yellow ducks on a white background, the number 9 and 10 cards feature penguins and fish contrasted on very simple backgrounds.These cards do a better job at providing contrasting colors helping children differentiate and count the animals on the card.

I should also note that the set is divided into two sets numbered from 1-10. The first set (of which I described in the previous paragraph), uses roman numeral numbers where as the second set uses the English word for the number.The English word set does better with the contrasting issue than the roman numeral number set.

DON'T LET the contrasting issue stop you from buying this set.Older kids will be able to make out the harder to see characters and younger kids are just gonna love how durable and forgiving these cards are.Then you have Mr. Carle's beautiful artwork.That alone is worth the price of admission.I only go into describing the cards in the length I do so that parents will be prepared by knowing that some of the cards may be difficult to use as flash cards.

Be prepared, but BUY THE SET already.

Always the Good Stuff
I love Eric Carle's artistry.

I have a couple of his books - My toddler and I have been taking ASL (American Sign Language) since she was 6 months old.

It's been a blast using these cards for animals, colors and numbers!

The cards AND box are extremely sturdy. Yes, they held up to the toddler test!

Really Great Cards!
These cards are really great quality and I love their big size.They really seem to capture my 8 month olds attention.He smiles every time I bring them out.My only criticism would be that there are about 4 or 5 really off the wall animals that even most adults may not have heard of.Ex. Quetzel, Narwal, Xolo(mexican hairless dog), etc.But, the pictures are great and I love that it also has the letter on the back of the cards.You can use these cards in a lot of fun ways to challenge your child in learning. ... Eric Carle books
The art work is beautiful as in all of Eric Carle's books but the content in this one was over the head of my first grader.
It is actually more a collection of poetry about mythical animals than a children's book.I do not recommend it for small children.

Stunning collection of fantastical creatures
An excellent selection of poems about common and as well as lesser known fantastic and mythical creatures from a range of cultures, beautifully and creatively illustrated.

4-1/2 year old likes it. Good for growing up
In our low-media home, our 4.5 year old son liked this book. Each page features one mythical creature along with a poem about it that gives hints as to some of it's personality traits. After seeing so many videos or books about farm animals this is refreshing and it piqued his interest. Right up there with dinosaurs around the time he turned 5 years old. But, I think the mythical creatures are most interesting because they're just... well, not real. They are so fantastical. His favorite was the phoenix, which he imbues to his cars or other toys as they get killed but come back to life, or other scenarios in which he or someone escapes death--everyone's primal ultimate fantasy. I'd like to buy it in order to have it around as my children grow up so they have yet another cultural reference to our common literary history. The pictures will continue to engage their imagination, I'm sure. I don't have any high hopes for them to love the poetry, but who knows. You won't know if you don't try. At least I can offer them something rather than edit it out before they even get a chance to see it.

My 3 Year Old Loved This Book, Over and Over
I hate to contradict the lower ratings in this review, but I had to write and say that my 3 year old LOVED this book, definitely one of his very favorites, of all of his large library. He loves the pictures, he loves the idea of the mythical creatures (the stereotype of boys being fascinated by monsters has been true for him), he is intrigued by the poetry. I don't understand how the review writers can't see the value of little people being exposed to great writers of poetry! He is neither depressed or put off, but intrigued. He laughs at the appropriate places, and we discuss the creatures, and as a mom I am thrilled. So, I do not think Eric Carle has failed us in any way. In fact, I am grateful someone gives our young people credit and believes in their potential!

fun for everyone
my toddlers really enojoy this product. the colors are bright and animals seem to peak their interest. i like that as they get older they will be able to continue using this porduct and that it helps improve their coordination skills.

Really cute lacing cards!
I bought these cards for my 3 year old son and he loves to use the laces in the cards. I love how colorful the cards are and the wonderful artwork on them. He loves that he knows the characters from his favorite Eric Carle books. Also they are made out of very sturdy material and easy for him to do by himself.

BEST TOY FOR LACING
I took this box with 10 cards and 10 laces to a religous gathering where kids had to sit quietly.to my surprise this was such a hit that not only my four age son and 16 months daughter enjoyed doing it but other kids ages from 4,5,6 and 7 years old pick up those cards from me and start lacing it. Age four do need help to get the conncept down but age six were doing it all by them self and once they will finish with one card they would want to get any other card so they can do a different design.A MUST HAVE.I'M BUYING MORE TO GIVE AS A GIFT.Perfect gift for BOYS AND GIRLS.

Please make the chirp stop
This is a favorite of my family. It was a favorite of mine until the chirping would not turn off. The book was closed and the chirp was still chirping all night I was to tired to search for the book at first but after 10 mins I could take no more. It is a really cute story and we love the chirp but I had to take the batteries out. If my daughter wants to me to read this one to her I have to hold the batteries and put them in when she gets to the last page. Hope this helps someone else before buying the book we love Carle but I would pass on this one.

A Favorite
A favorite in our household, our toddlers often request this book and enjoy the sound effects at the end.

DON'T BUY FROM AMAZON - BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE
So, this book is supposed to chirp when you get to the end, I am wrapping it up to give to my nephew on Christmas Eve and I turn to the back - no sound. I called Amazon and was slightly unhappy that they sent me a book that didn't chirp and so my nephew wouldn't have it to unwrap Christmas morning. So, I call and the customer service rep is pretty surly, but finally tells me that he will send me a working copy of the book by priority mail, but the soonest it will arrive is Monday after Christmas.Which, while not ideal, is ok because my nephew doesn't leave town to go home until Wednesday.So, I wait and wait all day Monday - the book does not come.I call Amazon first thing on Tuesday only to find out the guy LIED to me, and instead of sending the book as promised, he just refunds my money and sends me an email telling me I need to re-order the book. Its the holidays, of course I'm not checking my email. Unbelievable. The girl I'm talking to is so unbelievably rude that I ask to speak to a manager and then spend WAY too long on hold. She comes back and says a manager is not available. So I say, that's fine, just have the manager call me when he is available because Hello its the end of the month and I don't have that many minutes left on my phone.She says no, that I have to hold.Moral of the story, Amazon has bad customer service and will out and out lie to you.Don't count on them for big occasions like Christmas or you will have some very unhappy children.

Great when it works
Once again Eric Carle doesn't disappoint.It is a wonderful story that allows for discussions as the child grows.Illustrations can be used to learn colors, or let the child create their own version of the story.Chirping crickets at the end are delightful for both the listener and the story teller; however, some books are problematic with how well the sound works--be sure to check your purchase out!Simple text is great for emerging readers even though they probably will have the story memorized!The board book construction is great for little fingers not yet adept at turning pages.

I really like that it talks about the names of bugs and what the bugs do.It has the repetition (and choppiness) of a Carle book, which made it easy to let the kids chime in on "But nothing happened.Not a sound".The ending was dumb though, which is why I gave it 4-stars. ... Read more

Little Cloud book
Purchased for my preschool classroom for a weather unit.The book is great for preschoolers with short, simple sentences and nice pictures.Love Eric Carle books!

Little Cloud
This book is adorable for preschoolers as well as the young grades. It is simmple to read and is beautifully illustrated as are all of Eric Carle's Books.

Little Cloud
Little Cloud is one of Carle's more recent books. Carle started illustrating and writing books in the late 1960s. Of the Carle books I've read there are only two that I don't enjoy: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Greedy Snake as both are focused so heavily on gluttony.Little Cloud instead teaches through example the importance of being an individual and being a contributing member of a group.

Until the end, each page has a different shape that Little Cloud has created on his own. There's an airplane, a hat, and a variety of other shapes that children will easily recognize. In the end, his hat joins up with the other clouds who have together formed a clown.

Used Book
Average condition for a used book and with shipping the price, the total was so, so. The delivery took weeks!

A book that leaves you with options...
This book by Eric Carle is a simple book that I believe could be used many different ways.You could use this book in weather themes, during a cloud unit, or to stretch the imagination.

You could follow this book with an activity in which your children do their own cloud making, possibly out of cotton balls.

I think that this book is fun and I really enjoy the illustrations.I would definitely suggest having this book as a part of your classroom library.

Days of week book
Great book for school and teaching days of the week. Children like the song.

A Good Teaching Tool for Days of the Week
This is a nice illustrated book following the children's song "Today is Monday." It is illustrated in Carle's inimitable collage-art style with a different animal introducing each day and food, and ending with a lot of children sitting around a table eating the different foods.The song is repetitive and uninteresting, but the pictures are very nice.Singing books are wonderful teaching tools, and this is the best book I have found so far for teaching the days of the week.

Unfortunately there is no musical score included, but you can find it on YouTube.

Pro: Talks about animals; Con: Lame flaps
It goes through all the farm animals: the sounds they make and what they do.My 4-year old knew all this but my 2-year old benefitted.The flaps may as well have been pages since they're almost the same size as the page and open in the same direction.I think flap books should be more interesting.Overall, it's a cute basic book.

The Very Busy Spider
My daughter is an early elementary education student at UWP.This book is part of her children's library that will eventually be in her classroom.Eric Carle writes terrific children's books.

The flaps open the wrong way!
We have One Yellow Lion where the flaps open the opposite direction of the way you'd turn a page, and I thought this would be similar. But, the flaps open just as if you're turning a page. Granted, my son loves turning pages, so for him, this book is perfect. It was just different than what I expected. I'd recommend this book only to kids who can't sit still for more than a few seconds without wanting to turn the page of the book, as they get to turn twice as many in this so-called lift the flap book!

I purchased this book because I had read the hard cover and thought a lift the flap version would be interesting.I still really like the story but this is a very poor rendition of a lift the flap format.

Noah Chose the dove
This is cute book, but the pictures, in my opinion, are much to impressionist for a toddler to see. The adults enjoy the art and the
story was to wordy for a little one to stay interested.I would opt for a different book on Noah, but I will keep the book on my shelf!

I am collecting all of the Eric Carle books.This is one I did not have. I was excited to find it.

"Why are you silent?" Noah asked the dove.
When the people of the world sinned, and God chose the only righteous man, Noah, to build an ark, all of the animals gathered around.They, however, believed that Noah would only pick best of all the living creatures.The animals began to boast and argue amongst each other."I am the largest," said the Elephant."I am man's best friend," replied the dog.They argued and argued.
Noah noticed one lonely bird sitting in a tree.Noah asked the small, white dove why he did not boast.The Dove replied that he believed that everyone has something special, that another doesn't.Though, all are equally created by God.
Noah took all of the animals on the ark, but when he needed a `messenger' to see if the waters were going down, the one he chose was the dove.The dove is a bird of humility and peace.
I believe that this story is good for those of all ages.It teaches a lesson to all; we are all equally created.People should remain humble.

Delightful story, delightful pictures
This is a wonderful book in which a wide array of animals try to show why they should be allowed on the ark: the elephant argues his strength should save him; the fox, his cleverness; the donkey argues that he is more clever; the skunk, his odor ... A Pleasant Follow-Up to Brown Bear Brown Bear
This is a pleasant follow-up to Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, What Do You See?, with the rhythmic refrain changed by one word.This volume focuses on animals found in the zoo and the sounds they make: Polar bear, lion, hippo, flamingo, zebra, boa constrictor, elephant, leopard, peacock, walrus, finishing with the zookeeper and children, who playfully imitate the animals.It's characterized by pleasant, predictable repetition and Eric Carle's wonderfully playful collage illustrations.

Like Brown Bear, this book is well suited to the preschool crowd and could make a confidence-building practice reader.

Developing Vocabulary Through Repetition

Anderson, Grimm and Aesop, oh my!

Carle's beautiful illustrations (in his usual style) help these classic folktales and stories to come--not alive, necessarily, but at the very least more eye-catching.With artwork incorporated onto each page, Carle's interpretations of the works of Aesop, the Grimms, and Anderson may be enjoyed.

While there is a great deal of trickery and the occasional death among the these pages, there is not nearly as much depressing or morbid content as could be found in the complete collections of the Grimm brothers or Hans Christian Anderson's works.

I also liked that the morals of Aesop's fables were not emphasized too heavily or pulled out into a special section as occurs in some other collections.

Overall, Carle includes some more famous stories (such as Tom Thumb by the Grimms and The Grasshopper and the Antsor The Rabbit and the Turtle by Aesop) balanced with stories that students will probably be less familiar with.


Activities to Do with the Book:

This collection would serve as an excellent read aloud to children who love fairytales and folktales, whether they've been exposed to such stories extensively or only have the Disney versions.

The stories would lend themselves to be acted out among children.Also, since most of these stories come to us from Ancient times or the 1800s, students could consider the clothing and setting Carle chose to use in his illustrations.

Many of the stories could be tied or used with other literature because of similar themes.For example, The Grimms' Hans in Luck works well with Shel Silverstein's poem "Smart."The Evil King by Hans Christina Anderson has details similar to The Emperor's New Clothes.etc.

Some scary stuff....
Just a warning, some of the Grimm tales are pretty grim.The story of Big Klaus and Little Klaus, which I'd never heard before, features a man killing another man's horse, complete with (Eric Carle illustrated)picture of bloody ax and bleeding horse lying on the ground.It additionally features implied adultery and Little Klaus tricking Big Klaus into killing himself.Not too delightful if you ask me.My 3-year-old son liked some of the stories and pictures, especially the Aesop's fables.Just get that one unless you've actually read through these stories.The fairy tales of previous centuries are a bit rougher than what we're used to reading to our kids these days.

very good books for elementary kids
We have so many Eric Carle books.This is one of our collection.its so colorful n promote good attitude n positive thinking towards young kids.this book too contains lots of stories so its awesome for a long airplane ride.

Charming!
This book is simply a pleasure to read.Carle illustrates in a style all his own.If you like his work you will not want to be without this charming collection of 22 classic tales told in a fun, conversational stlye.Five stars.

Enjoyed this
If you love stories, you'll really enjoy this. My students did. Also nice to add to your collection are: Aesop for Children (Winter), Grimm's complete fairy tales (Grimm), Great Children's stories (Richardson), The Butterfly (Singh). There are many other great children's books out there, but these were the ones I enjoyed the most. Colors and Animals
My 18 month old likes it.She can name some of the animals.I like it because it introduces color in the way they should be.
Children learn colors with a noun, like brown bear, purple cat; not purple, black, brown.

Clever, unusual, and sweet
My 3-year old son is just bananas about this book, which desribes the attributes of a sloth a way that also introduces children to some excellent new vobaulary. This is a fun, sweet book in the traditionally imaginative and joyful way that Eric Carle's book approach children and teaching.

Liked it more then my daugther
This book is classic Carle.Easy flowing text and pretty pictures. Overall it's a good little story though I must admit the ending will not be understood by little ones. Many "big words" are used and I don't think many would understand them or the point of the message.

There is a great introduction by Jane Goodall. My little girl listened to it instead of getting bored from it as such detailed information tends to be dry.My girl was "grossed out" (in a funny way) by the fact the Sloth rarely leave the trees and will come down to go to the bathroom and go back up much thinner!

She also had a little fun looking for the animals that are listed in the back of the book.

Overall; it's a nice book but it did not get the same level of repeat reads as with previous books.

Slowly, slowly, slowly, said the sloth
I purchased this book because of my interest in the rain forest and to read to my granddaughter.I liked how many animals were introduced in this story.This introduction was reinforced by having pictures of all the animals, with their names, on the last two pages.

The last text page incorporates many words that describe a sloth.This page could be used as a wonderful vocabulary lesson.

I was quite dissapointed with this product. The Box it came in was better quality than the products inside. The book did have a few good ideas but not alot of choice. I had hoped for more stickers on each book rather than 5 pages of the same nstickers with only one from each book. My party was based on one book not all so it turned out to be a waste of money for me as there was very little of it that i could use.

All in one party kit
I loved this kit for my son's 1st birthday. We are big fans of Eric Carle and this was a must have. Thelittle crowns were a hit with the kids and adults and the banner was great. Beautiful colors and artwork. It had great party suggestions and recipes.

Nice Party Kit
Everything is pretty small, but it works. The booklet that comes with it is awesome! It comes with great ideas for party food, games, and craft activities. It was well worth the money.

Not worth the money at all!
I ordered this kit for my son's first birthday party.What a waste of money.The goody bags or very flimsy and look really cheap.The idea booklet is useless.The happy birthday sign is so small.I was really disappointed in this kit.I love Eric Carle and I expected a lot more from this kit.

Have you seen my Cat?
I love Eric Carle's books and so do my grandsons.I bought this one for my 3 year old grandson.From the moment we started, he was captiviated by the brilliant illustrations and the pull out tabs. He wanted to read it over and over again.By the time I saw him two weeks later, he had the book memorized and was delighted that he could tell me, quite dramaticallly, that it was not his cat.The pull out tabs are a great idea to get the children to participate.

Disappointed
We are big Eric Carle fans in my house, my son is 2 and loves all of his books, except this one.We enjoy cats, but this book was just plain BORING.In the beginning (before reading starts) it identifies all the different types of cats, but throughout the book it doesn't identify them again or their home/habitit.It shows different cultures for the various cats, but doesn't even say one word about them, just says "That's not my cat" for the ENTIRE book.Disappointed that I bought this book.

A cute slide-and-Peek board book
I noticed Amazon has the reading level of this book geared towards children 4 to 8 years old. I really think this book is intended for six months to 18 months. There are very few words in the book and the ones the book has are repeated constantly. My 18 month old granddaughter loved the repetitiveness of the book. The pictures are such that you can have a discussion or make up some sort of side story for your child. As usual Eric Carle doesn't disappoint.

Great book for emergent reader!
This book has a lot of depth, but you must see past the simple text.One great thing about the simple text is that emergent readers can read this book with ease!If they can't get it right on the first page, they are sure to get it right on the second page.The repetition is actually very beneficial and encouraging to a new reader.

Regarding depth, the pictures tell most of the story.Great discussions while reading will involve the different members of the cat family and also the country or area of the world that the boy is now visiting.These discussions can develop into both science and social studies lessons.

Don't judge a book by its number of words!This is a great choice for young families!

Wonderful Learning Tool!( a review of 1,2,3 to the Zoo)
1,2,3 To The Zoo is a delightful Eric Carle book for toddlers and preschoolers who are ready to learn their numbers.Carle combines two elements - Animals and Trains!-- to keep their interest.And most children love his artwork.

The book begins with a two-page spread of a lovely blue steam engine.The next two pages show 1 elephant on a flat-bed shipping car;the following pages, 2 hippos on their own flatbed, and so forth.The concept is that the engine is picking up the shipping-cars, making for a longer train.

What I like about this book is that there is lots to talk about.Adults can use it to teach the names of colors, as well as the names of animals, in addition to how many there are of them.

The notion of 'addition' is shown at the bottom of each page where Carle shows the train getting longer as we go along.The last pages shows an overview of the zoo with every animal where it should be.

a little disappointed
I didn't realize this was a coloring book when I ordered it.I was exepcting a colorful animal story for my kids.We will get use of it

this was advertised as a counting book, it is in fact a colouring book.what a rip off.

Educational and fun
My 13 months old daughter loves this book; I have borrowed it from a library and it became such an indispensable favorite of our bedtime routine that I had to buy it. My daughter and I enjoy the beautiful watercolors - vivid, crisp and not too busy to distract a very young reader, and she has an especially great fun in finding a little brown mouse hidden among the zoo animals on each picture. She does not count yet, but for an older child this book can provide a lot of additional fun with counting animals on each of the 10 train-cars and seeing them all safely unloaded in the zoo.

Not much in this one
This is one of Carle's books that are suited more for toddlers than older kids.

There aren't many words, just a count of the various animals on their way to the zoo.

Because of this, and because the book is oversized and hard to read/shelve, it may be better to buy this in board book format - or, given the minimal content, to skip it altogether. ... Read more

Science and Literacy Connection
A House for Hermit Crab is a delightful book - Eric Carle's illustrations are phenominal, as always.As children's literature, a great tale of friendship and sharing, and a great tie-in to our seashore/hermit crab science unit.Children learn to identify many sea creatures who are characters in the story, and reading the story to my students reinforced our discussions of how the hermit crab moves to a new shell when he outgrows his old one.A great way to tie literature to content areas.

A House for Hermit Crab
I have no hesitation in purchasing any of Eric Carles books for my grandsons.They love them.The Hermit Crab is a good story about diversity and working together.
The art work is always beautiful.One of my grandsons is autistic.He is kindergarten age and loves to read.Eric Carles books are his favorite and he reads them over and over.I am told that even though Carles books are not written specifically for autistic children they are excellent books for them. My other grandsons love them as well.

Kids Get What You Give
This is a traditional read for the end of the year in my preschool class of 5s.The tradition was started by the previous teacher and many parents this year have had kids in previous classes and mentioned how much they wanted to hear it again.The first year I read it I was concerned it was too long and of course the kids picked up on it. This year was my most successful reading.We had just ended a unit on the ocean and it's creatures so the junior scientists in the group loved it.I read it slowly - giving kids lots of time to view the wonderful illustrations - and with feeling. One of my students said at the end that it was a kind of short book, meaning the time went by quickly. You get out of this what you put into it. It is super for those setting off for a new adventure - i.e. kindergarten.

adventure time!!!
love this book, love the story line love the colors. board book is durable even after multiple chewing on the corners and drops and bends, it still holds true and is not ruined yet. My 7 month old can never sit still long enough to get through the Whole story, but that makes the book even more exciting to always be opening up to a page he never seen before. Words are small, but written well and the hermit crab is very polite and gentle! i recommend it for parents who like to read out loud, or for first time readers. (or second)
