5-0 out of 5 stars First library - Eric Carle
What a great product - durable books with classic Eric Carle animation.Perfect for my toddler / student. The format of the books was unexpected - top half of the books flip and turn separately from the bottom half of the books. At first, I thought this would create confusion.Instead, it created interest and fascination.

birthday gift for a one year old other than a toy.a good start to a reading career

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool, great illustrations
I bought this as a gift for my son, and I love the colors and the concept. The books require the child or reader to identify shapes, numbers, colors, and first words that match one another. Each book is a board book (there are four total), and when opened is split in half, top from bottom. For example, there is the color blue with the word blue on the top part of the book, and you have to flip the bottom part of the book to find the picture that has a blue object. It is easy to figure out and has directions. The colors are vibrant with lovely looking brush strokes. The set is definitely for beginning readers who are learning their colors and numbers.Do not expect a story line with these books. That is not their purpose.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best from Eric Carle
I was very disappointed when i recieved the book set. It is not your typical Eric carle Book, Each page has a picture and the word but above you have to flip through the whole book to find the matching word. It's kind of hard to explain.Stick with Brown Bear Brown bear and the other classic Eric Carle books, this one really sucks. ... Read more

Product Description
With over 300,000 copies sold since its publication in 1985, The Very Busy Spider is well on its way to becoming a modern classic. The raised lines for the spider, its web, and an unsuspecting fly allow both sighted and visually impaired children to follow the action. Full color.Amazon.com Review
Every young child should be introduced to this story, as greata classic as its predecessor, The Very HungryCaterpillar. This colorful picture book describes a spider'sday. Blown onto a farmyard fence, she starts to spin a web. The otheranimals ask if she wants to play, but in every case "the spider didn'tanswer. She was very busy spinning her web." The book is touchable:elements including the strands of web are embossed on the pages andyou can follow them with your fingertips. But the best thing by far isCarle's familiar, yet still breathtaking skill as anillustrator. Especially in this large 11.5-by-8.5-inch format, hiscow, goat, and dog (just to mention three favorites) capture theessence of each animal in a way few artists can hope toapproach. 2-0 out of 5 stars Always read the fine print.
Like a lot of people, I ordered this directly from Amazon, figuring it'd be a regular sized book, or at the very least, about the same size as the board book version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Usually Amazon will say in the item title what version the book is, like board book, hardcover, etc. Seeing as how The Very Busy Spider here was the same price as the board book of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I figured it'd be a board book too. Nope! Granted, the product details do tell you the measurements of the book, but shouldn't they have the decency to say this is a miniature book in the title too? Heck, why order this when you can get the paperback version for the same price through Amazon's Used & New?

Either way, this is a fairly cute book, though I don't think it's anywhere near as memorable as Eric Carle's other books like the Caterpillar, Cricket, Ladybug and Firefly books. It's about a [very busy] spider who lands on the scene one day, and just starts to spin its web. Many other animals come over and invite the spider to come with them and have fun, but the spider doesn't reply- it's too busy spinning its web. Finally a rooster asks the spider if it wants to come and chase flies, and by this point, the web's done. The spider doesn't need to reply to the rooster, because after it asks, a fly lands in the web. Story over.

There's no real message or moral here that I can figure out, not that it's necessary in order to enjoy the story or anything, but where The Grouchy Ladybug is about bullying and being put in your place, all The Very Busy Spider is is a spider ignoring offers by other animals because it wants to complete its web. Yeah, there could be the message of how important it is to stay focused and finish the job, but I'm sure there are a lot of parents out there who'd whine about the spider having bad manners or something. The art style is done in the standard Carle fashion, always a treat, and the spider's web is done in a special way on the paper so that it's risen from the page a bit and 'bumpy'.

I give the book on its own 3.5 stars, but this dinky version: a tiny hardcover book with regular paper pages, not being billed as that in the title and throwing off many people, reduces the score a bit. Sure it could be a good choice to take on trips, but most kids will enjoy the illustrations better if the pages are bigger. Unless your child specifies that they want THIS version, go with the old paperback or hardcovers instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Publisher's Mini edition???
Shame on you Amazon!! This version of the book is tiny, tiny, tiny, only 3in.x 3in.. This was not indicated in the general description. The only place it was indicated was in the publishing details and I did not see that until after receiving the tiny book in the mail. Will know that I need to read even the fine print next time!

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic book, tiny copy
The book is amazing, of course. Eric Carle is a great author. However, this book is ridiculously small. It barely fits in your hand. I was hoping for a book that I could easily flip through with my nephew, but it's too small. Disappointing!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Toddler Book
In this pleasant sequel to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle introduces a spider who, carried by the wind, lands on a fence post and begins to spin her web.In each two-page spread, a different animal approaches her, inviting her to participate in an activity familiar to them: the horse wants her to go for a ride, the cow invites her to eat some grass, the sheep invites her for a run in the meadow, and so on.The spider's response to each invitation is silence, because "She was very busy spinning her web."At the end of the story,, the purpose of the web is revealed when a pesty fly (which had buzzed around each animal in the preceding pages) meets its fitting end, and the spider settles down to sleep, satisfied after her busy day.

This great toddler book has a lot going for it.Farm animals introduce themselves with their characteristic sound and behavior, we learn about a spider's natural behavior, and each turn of the page page brings another pleasing repetition of greeting and silence that moves the story along nicely, while retaining the attention of preverbal listeners.

The spider's example of steady, goal-oriented and satisfying work is a good model for children who need to grow up into productive adults. While the book doesn't have quite the brilliance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, it is a good addition to a child's reading basket.

Love the author and the stories but the font of this set is SMALL which makes for difficult bed-time reading in dimmer, night-time light. I also like my son to follow the words with me while reading to him and that is hard to do as well with this set.

I bought this book set for my goddaughter's 6th birthday. She flipped over it and didn't want to open any other presents until she had read them all. I had no idea she would love it THAT much. Would highly recommend. Do keep in mind the books are small books (in case you were thinking they were large or something).

A restless firefly begins a search for other fireflies and is led to a lantern, a candle, the glowing eyes of a cat, dog, and owl, and a surprise celebration of light before he finds his friends and the reason for his journey.Amazon.com Review
Many of Eric Carle's books begin with a small creature beingborn just as a great yellow sun rises. This time the hero is afirefly, and the inimitably Carle-ish cut-paper orange-and-yellow sunis setting. The firefly buzzes off in search of companionship, butkeeps following other lights by mistake--a candle, a flashlight, alantern--and these in turn are all leading in the direction of afireworks display. Finally, the lonely firefly finds the friends it isseeking--a dozen or more other fireflies. This is one of a series oflarge (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Carle books with a mechanical twist:in this case, the firefly's new group of friends start to flash (fromtiny yellow bulbs embedded in the book) as you turn the lastpage. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Moon!
Great book for any kid. My grandson loves the moon. Every night his parents have to take him outside to say goodnight to Mr. Moon. He became interested in "reaching/touching the moon." I happened upon this book and the rest is history. Great experience for any parent or grandparent. I have found that, most of the time, a story works so much better than a long-winded explanation. Let the children use their imaginations. A joy for all concerned.

I love Eric Carle's artistry.

I have a couple of his books - My toddler and I have been taking ASL (American Sign Language) since she was 6 months old.

It's been a blast using these cards for animals, colors and numbers!

The cards AND box are extremely sturdy. Yes, they held up to the toddler test!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle - Always a good choice
I may be slightly biased on my review here, because I love Eric Carle's work.It just so happens, though that my five month-old son loves his work as well! The illustrations are beautiful and while the animals and names might be advanced for kids younger than two, babies four months or older will still love the colors and want to get their little hands on them.Truly, everything that my wife and I have purchased from the Eric Carle library has been a huge hit with our son.Carle has a way of using paint and paper to create movement and excitement in every piece. These cards, in particular, have several advantages. We were thrilled with the size and thickness of them (if you're a parent, then you'll understand the desire for slightly larger and more substantial items that are intended for child's play.)They also come in a cute little box that makes them easy to store. The animals that Carle has chosen to illustrate range from extremely common to somewhat eccentric. In fact, two or three are well off the beaten path when compared to other children's games - we really enjoyed this.Of course on the opposite side of the animal illustrations are custom drawn, but easy to read alphabet letters (uppercase and lowercase)...and the colors and textures resting behind the letters are absolutely and uniquely Carle, appearing playfully course, fibrous, and unprocessed - naturally beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love these!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Eric Carle book
I have yet to read a book of Eric Carle's that I didn't love. My two year old loves his books. They are so easy to read and the illustrations are very eye catching. My two year old can practically read this book on his own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle Illustrations are Cute!
We love this product because of the bright colors and vivid imagery that Eric Carle's illustrations provide. This book is your basic ABC book, but the bright colors make it worthwhile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not easy to read
I love Eric Carle's illustrations, and every child should have an ABC primer in his library, but this book is hard to read with a baby on your lap. The pages fold up and out, and aren't easy to hold for the baby to get a good look. As a result, I don't bring it out very often.

2-0 out of 5 stars book engineering fails
I love Eric Carle and his art and this book doesn't disappoint in that respect.
The problem I have with this book is its major design flaw. You see the A page, but to see the next two pages (B and C) you must lift the entire A page up (the fold is at the top of the book). You can imagine that when you refold the page, it doesn't lay flat against the page unless you hold it down at the center binding. If you don't press it down when you turn the page, you bend the page! It's impossible to not bend the page when you are reading to an animated 15 month old... grrr. Also, having pages that are L-shaped (when unfolded they are a large backward L shape) make them VERY easy to tear. And I do mean EASY.My toddler loves to walk around with his books and this one is truly trashed.I think it has 2 or three pages remaining. But since it is his current-reigning favorite book, I have had to buy replacements that only I can hold while I read to him.
His very favorite parts of the book are the front and back pages. The front has the uppercase alphabet and the back has the lowercase alphabet and when he points at it I have to sing the ABC song.Repeatedly.:-)
A minor irritation is Carle's choice of creatures:quetzal, narwhal, xolo (how do you pronounce these words?!?), and unicorn (the only mythical creature).Aagh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
Reviewed by Conner Aguren (age 3) and Mom for Reader Views (2/08)

Eric Carle's signature woodcut illustrations are laid out in a novel, lift-the-flap, walk through the alphabet.

"So do you like the book?"
"Yeah."
"Which was your favorite letter?"
"I like all the letters. I like the pictures. I like the whole book."

Parent's comment:

There is only so much you can do with an ABC primer. Yet "Eric Carle's ABC" takes it just a step further by formatting it in an interesting flap book. The illustrations are top-notch. He introduces some not-so-common animals to represent some of the letters, though I would have chosen a different animal for the letter `G.' He uses the animal `gull' which to me, should be seagull. A better choice that doesn't have other name variations would have been `goose' or `giraffe.' But my son got to see a `quetzel,' a `narwhal' and a `xolo,' so that was fun.

Product Description
When Mrs. Seahorse lays her eggs on Mr. Seahorse's belly, she knows he will take good care of them-especially since he gets advice from other fatherly fish. Featuring colorfully surprising acetate overlays, Eric Carle has created a beautiful book, filled with the wonders of aquatic life.Amazon.com Review
Are you ready for a scintillating seahorse fact? The father seahorse is the one who carries the mother's eggs around in his pouch before they hatch. In Mister Seahorse, master collage artistEric Carle teaches preschoolers this lesson and introduces them to a few other fish who bear the traditionally maternal burden of caring for eggs: the stickleback, tilapia, Kurtus nurseryfish (known here as Mr. Kurtus), pipefish, and bullhead catfish. As ever, it's Carle's art that steals the show. Cut-up tissue paper soaks up the watery paint and makes for a boldly colorful, almost jewel-like undersea journey. The story? Well, repetition is the heart of instruction, after all.

Most of Carle's books employ some sort of gizmo or gadget--and this one is no exception. Here, for a splendid lesson in camouflage, colorful acetate sheets mask marine life that is revealed as the child turns the page. Children may take comfort in the devotion of these undersea fathers...except perhaps at the very end when the father seahorse says to a freshly hatched sea-pony who wants back in the pouch: "I do love you, but now you are ready to be on your own." 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Daddy Book!
Mrs. Seahorse has given Mr. Seahorse the very important task of taking care of their babies and Mr. Seahorse is proud to do it! This is a delightful tale in classic Eric Carle style that follows a daddy seahorse through the ocean where it meets other daddy fishes taking good care of their babies. Not only does it highlight fathers, it models good sentence structure and polite greetings between fishes, er people. As an added plus this book also has fun interactive transparent inlays that hide a dangerous fish that Mister seahorse passes by. You lift the overlay to spy the scary fish! Colorful, classic, and charming, Mister Seahorse has been a surefire hit with our little ocean lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Book That Focuses on Dads - and Such a Favorite of My Kids
Let's face it - Dads often get short-shrift in children's books, especially those for young children. So I love that this book focuses on sea-creature Dads - fish and other sea critters where the Dads care for the young, or at least the eggs, for a time. As always in Carle books the pictures are colorful, abstract, and engaging, and my kids love the 'hide-and-seek' feature of the see-through pages. A classic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Meh.
Eric Carle was the art director of an advertising agency before Bill Martin Jr. asked him to illustrate a book of his. I think his work feels like the work of an ad. executive too--it has a distinctive artistic style, but is really not very original. His stories are bland and unexciting, and mostly forgettable. He is certainly not one of those children's authors like Dr. Seuss or Arnold Lobel or David Wiesner that adults can actually enjoy when they read them to kids. Carle's an unoriginal thinker who's never made a single stylistic variation from his original aesthetic, and whose stories are just lazy--a caterpillar becoming a butterfly? Four identically structured books about what a bear sees and hears? Kill me.

There are exceptions, I think, to his general lameness--The co-written VERY GREEDY PYTHON has a unique ending, and there are one or two others--but he doesn't deserve the hype, and his books are best-suited for the very, very young, so board books only.

Oh, and MISTER SEAHORSE is not one of the great ones. It's pretty bland, if you ask me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures with information about sea life
My grandaughter loves the ocean and sealife. She is only 4 years old so finding a fun but informative book is hard. This book was a hit with her.Eric Carle really writes and illustrates the most wonderful books for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely and visually stimuating
I purchased this book when my baby was 2 months old. The story is wonderful, and my baby's father found it fun for him to read. An over sized book, yet not heavy. colorful pages with easy to read passages! my baby is now 7 months and upon seeing the book he becomes very excited and wants to be in arms so that he can tear it apart.
I am very anxious waiting for when he will be reading ME the book :) (his favorite thing to do with the book is touch the inside cover pages with all the little seahorses.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately worth it!
This book is a hit with my class of 3-4 year olds!!They love trying to do everything the animals are doing. And it arrived just in time for "physical me" week with amazon's super fast shipping!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, big, bold and FUN
I am thrilled that this book is so big as it's great for small and large crowds of kids who can see the pictures well and can then really get involved. Repetition is the key and kids love the excitement of learning so fast and being able to shout out "I can do it".I collect TY Beanie Babies and have a huge collection of animals, many of which match those by Eric Carle. In this book, the parrot, camel, gorilla, seal, buffalo, giraffe and penguin are amongst his characters.I use his books to teach French and it's great to just write the translation on each page, in a different colour. The words are fairly simple and repetitious and so books like this one are brilliant for fast learning.Fantastique :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfull book!
My daughter is 22 momths and she loved this book. She is able to flip the hadcover pages herself and imitates the gestures of the different animals. She is learning all her body parts as well as the names of different animals. It is very interactive...I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars big book
My 18month old daughter adores the book and quickly mastered the "I can do it"s. The only problem is that the format is so large the pages easily tear when she tries to turn them.

5-0 out of 5 stars great quality prints
I'm a huge Eric Carle fan, and these prints are selected from his well-known books. They are printed with E.C.'s vivid colors on high quality paper.I gave them to my daughter to decorate her new baby's room, and she was delighted.A great find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for decorating our nursery!
These prints gave us such an easy way to decorate our nursery in bright colors. The only problem is I love far more of the prints than we have room to put up! So, we'll just have to rotate through them.

I didn't frame them, but for those of you confused by the measurements, we pulled out the ruler and they are, indeed, 12 x 16, for those of you looking to frame them. They are easy to pull out of the book, or leave in.We ended up buying some cute, cloth-covered push pins on etsy and adhering them to the wall that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful prints for a playroom
I ordered these for my daughter's palyroom and love them! They are a great size and printed on a nice sturdy paper. My 20-month-old loves the book "Brown Bear, Brown bear" and seems really drawn to Eric Carle's artwork. Highly recommend as a great alternative to buying prints and framing, etc. These are so colorful that they can easily stand alone on a wall.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great deal!
My daughters (4 years old and 20 months) love all of the Eric Carle books so what better way to bring those characters to life for them than to hang these amazing prints on the walls of their rooms. All of the wonderful and colorful characters from the most popular Carle books are represented. The pictures are 12 x 16 which can be framed in standard sized frames. They are sturdy and make great gifts for those you don't hang on your own walls!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
My daughter loves Eric Carles' The Hungry Caterpillar and The Grouchy Ladybug; to give my husband and I a break at bedtime reading, I bought this book. The poems are not children's poems as I assumed, so this does not hold my 2 1/2 yr old's attention. It'll be great when she's older; definitely recommend for older children, just disappointed that we're back to the Hungry Caterpillar and Grouchy Ladybug until I get another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Large and wonderful
About the size of a magazine, yet heavier paper. Filled with the wonderful photos of animals and poems and haikus of all sorts. I read random passages out of the book to my 6 month old. He loves to touch the pictures and hear me read as well!

2-0 out of 5 stars Justin in San Antonio, 11 yrs
I thought the book was okay, but it might be more suitable for small kids. Some of the poems had made up words that were kind of like Dr. Suess type words. That's why I think little kids would like it better.

I did like Eric Carle's art in the book, and every poem had a picture with it that was colorful.I think it would be a good book for my little cousins because it was about animals and most of the poems were short so they won't get bored.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of my two-year-old twins
I had this book on the top shelf of the kids' (two year old boy and girl) bookcase for safe-keeping until they got a little older and a little better at page-turning.It's far too nice a book, I thought, to be torn and wrinkled by a couple of toddlers who can't even appreciate it.It contains a wonderful variety of poems, and Eric Carle's artwork is stunning. He devotes a two-page spread to most of the animals; the whale at the beginning takes up four pages.

At one point, one of the children spotted this book and expressed an interest, so I got it down and read a few poems to them.I carefully replaced it on the top shelf. They began requesting it more and more, and soon protested when I returned it to the shelf beyond their reach.I gave in, and let them leaf through it -- under my supervision. Finally realizing that it was senseless to limit their handling of this book they so obviously enjoyed, I moved the pristine hardcover to a lower shelf.

I had no idea that two-year-olds would enjoy this poetry so much. While some of the poems are certainly at their language level, many are more advanced, and the kids request those just as often.I frequently find them looking through the book, naming the animals ("duck-billed platypus") and quoting portions of the poems ("lays eggs like a bird").

Now my son cannot even bear to part with this book at night, so it (along with a few others) goes into the crib with him.The binding is loosening and a few pages are torn, but I'll gladly spend another $22.99 to replace it, if necessary. It's a small price to pay for what may become a real love and appreciation for poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!!!
This is a fantastic book, full of wonderful poetry and Eric Carle's trademark collage art. This book includes poetry selections that span the cultures, including Native American, aboriginal, and Japanese to name a few. Many of the big names in poetry are here, from Shakespeare to Ogden Nash. I especially liked the reference to creation included with a quote from Genesis and a picture of a whale. My personal favorite poem in the book is "Mother Doesn't Want a Dog," and why "She's making a mistake." This is a great introduction to poetry for children that the whole family loves. Truly a great addition to my homeschool library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read-aloud
In this picture book are many animals and patterns, the latter of which is appropriate for math concepts.Agrouchy ladybug encounters a friendly ladybug eating aphids on a leaf and wants them all to herself. She challenges the other ladybug who accepts the challenge-to the grouchy ladybug's surprise. The grouchy ladybug then flies on and meets increasingly larger animals, challenging them all to a fight, and all accepting her challenge. She finally meets a whale who slaps her with his fin until she finds herself right back where she started from, meekly accepting the aphids that were left on the leaf by the friendly ladybug. The grouchy ladybug is contrite, realizing friendliness yields the peaceful life.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Preschool Read-Aloud With Some Learning Opportunities
The Grouchy Ladybug follows an insect through her day, providing some preschool-level humor along with a little bit of learning. This ladybug, however, has a serious attitude and challenges every creature she sees to a fight. When her challenge is accepted, she spits "Oh, you're not big enough" and flies on.The story progresses on cutaway pages, each revealing a larger animal, until she finally meets a whale who dramatically puts her in her place. Each page also shows the trajectory of the sun as the day goes on, and a small clock with two hands is drawn in the corner of each page to show the hour that has elapsed.

The simple, predictable format of this story is most likely to appeal to preschoolers, and early elementary students may benefit from using the story as an exercise in telling time, especially if they have enjoyed it previously. The ladybug's absurd behavior provides a humorously dramatic example of how pride can deceive people into acting in crazy, self-destructive ways (Proverbs 16:18).Young children will enjoy the silliness, even if they don't absorb the moral, and the story ends happily. It's not quite as charming as Very Hungry Caterpillar, but it's a very enjoyable read-aloud.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for my 11 month old!
My daughter loves this book, the hard board edition is great but a bit on the small side, the mini pages (different times the lady bug goes to see other animals to fight) are kind of small as is the text, making it difficult to point to the words I am reading as she looks on. I like this book but it is slightly expensive. nonetheless its a good book to have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from Books That Heal Kids
A punch, a kick, a pull, a shove, a pinch.....oh yep, those things happen between kiddos at my school from time to time. There's lots of developmental (and environmental) reasons this goes down. I won't bore you with them. My job as the school counselor is to help kids with social growth and surprise surprise....they can get mad and angry during the school day! I've been reading this story for quite a few years. It's very loved among kids because of it's cool setup with varying page sizes and illustrations. But The Grouchy Ladybug has also been a powerful tool for teaching anger management to my K-2 students. Cuz just about every page she is trying to scrap with someone - "Hey you! Wanna fight!!?" Perfect for teaching replacement behaviors. I love hearing the students try and figure out what's under her anger. They try and relate to her! Another thing that gets this story rockin' is my ladybug puppets (I'm borderline obsessed with puppets...it could be another blog in itself). I have two ladybug puppets the kids use to practice how to handle your anger and solve problems. You can do a lot with this story in the area of social skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life lessons learned by a ladybug
This story about a petulant ladybug who sets on a quest to find someone big enough to fight with was recommended to me by Barbara Haymann-Diaz, a long-time children's librarian who has now retired and volunteers weekly at the Adriance Memorial Library. Eric Carle is a powerhouse in the world of children's literature. Together with his wife, Bobbie Morrison, he founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, a museum devoted to the art of children's books in Amherst located near Hampshire College (one of the places I want to visit really badly).

Before the story starts, Carle explains that aphids are pests which are eaten by ladybirds in order to help plants grow. When the eponymous ladybug meets a nice, friendly ladybug who offers to share aphids with him, it turns it down and asks for a fight. However when its invitation is accepted, it backs out, claiming the ladybug isn't big enough to be a worthy opponent. The grouchy ladybug then flies around challenging one creature to another, meeting a yellow jacket, a stag beetle, a praying mantis, a sparrow, a lobster, a skunk, a boa constrictor, a hyena, a gorilla, a rhinoceros and an elephant.

Each animal appears on a different page, at a different hour of the clock, thus helping children learn how to read the time. The book is unique in making each page a little wider than the one before. The grouchy ladybug finally threatens a giant whale, only to be ignored and then slapped by its tail. The page is cleverly shaped like a whale's tail and the reader flips it to find the ladybug back to where it started, this time, much softer and kinder to its fellow bug. The two share the aphids and are thanked by the leaf.

This classic, which came out in 1977, teaches what I've identified in my still young life as one of the most important skills - gratitude. The ladybug comes across bigger and bigger obstacles in the form of larger and larger creatures, but it does not cower in fear. It learns humility from the kindness of a fellow ladybug. The ending is an example of companionship and compassion as the two ladybugs do a good deed by ridding the leaf of pests. Without being didactic, Carle seems to subtly imply that petty pride can do no good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE Love love this baby book
We just love this baby book!We were looking for something simple that just recorded the main facts. (some books wanted you to fill in a blow by blow - hour by hour of the first few days!Who has time for that?)
Of course, it was the artwork that originally drew us to this book - the Hungry Caterpillar was my daughter's favorite as a child, and I purchased this in anticipation of her first child. It is a beautiful book and will not take a lot of precious time away from your newborn to fill out.A winner for sure!!!!!!

De la cabeza a los pies has the same advantages for children learning Spanish as a second language as the English version has for English language learners. The text is both brief and comprehensible due to the illustrations, and it's also interactive as it invites listeners to participate in the body actions.Native Spanish speakers also enjoy the opportunity to get all their body parts moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my son's favorites.
My four-year-old son loves this book. It makes a special birthday gift that is kind of like a game and book in one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great symbol identification and clue following
This is a very unique Carle book. Your child can learn more about shapes and how to follow clues to lead to the next step. My daughter enjoyed reading the story and following the "clues" to the next shape to find the present at the end - a puppy.

If you take the story literally as an adult, you will agree with one of the reviewers that was upset a puppy was being stored in a cave/basement. But it's not meant to be taken literally. It's a fantastical journey for children. To this day, my daughter enjoys following the trail to the present waiting for her at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars The combination of short sentences and shapely illustrations make it ideal for beginning readers
This book is an excellent choice for beginning readers. The story is constructed from very short sentences and the associated visual effects are colorful and based on shapes constructed from partial pages. It opens with a riddle that is a secret message directing Tim to where he can find his birthday present. That present turns out to be something that nearly all children wish for, so the trek is one that will interest most children. I strongly recommend it for all children who are taking their first steps in learning to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars My toddler likes it, I don't
I must be the only parent on the planet not to like Eric Carle's books. I don't like his illustrations at all (see A FAIRY WENT A-MARKETING for some GOOD illustrations, imho!) & the story bores me to tears...that is, until the end when I see the present is a live puppy who has been waiting God knows how long in a cave to be found by the birthday boy--then I get mad...& what kind of message does that send to little ones about caring for animals?Anyway, I gave this 3 stars because my 2 year old does enjoy it alot & has memorized the shapes & has fun with it, but it leaves me cold...just call me the Grinch, I guess...

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for your Pre-K "birthday" books collection
Prior to my grandson's 3rd birthday, I gave him several books about birthdays. This one was his favorite. He was immediately drawn into searching through the clues which use directional words such as below, behind . . . He was breathless to find the surprise at the end of the book. And I'm not telling what the surprise is;it's a secret. I will tell you that it's a gift that most every child dreams of receiving. Of course, Eric Carle's art work is magical. Make a child's day--give him or her this book. ... Read more

"Few in number are the parents who have made it through their toddler's years on just one copy of Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Dream Snow has similar ingredients: a simple story, lively collage-like illustrations and a fun gimmick for little hands..." (Time)

"This is a simple, well-told story about a simple farmer.... Viewers...will want to get their hands on it." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

"Carle fans and toddlers learning the basics will...enjoy the gentle text and creative design features." (Booklist)

"The pictures are in Carle's trademark richly colored and textured collages that capture the snowy magic of Christmas." (Kirkus Reviews)Amazon.com Review
It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. As the farmer naps on his small farm, he dreams of being covered in a gentle blanket of new snow. Then, one by one, he dreams of each of his five animals (aptly named One, Two, Three, Four, and Five) being covered as well. When he awakens, he discovers that real snow--not dream snow--has fallen. And "Oh my! Oh my! I almost forgot," the farmer shouts, and, bundling up, hurries out to his tree (named Tree) with a box and a sack, looking remarkably familiar in his white beard and red suit. After decorating Tree, the farmer shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" and pushes a button for a surprise Yuletide jingle.

Young fans of Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, and other multisensory books, will delight in pushing the same microchip button the farmer pushes to hear the tinkling, oddly eerie holiday tune. In an even more unusual departure from standard picture books, Carle inserts a clear plastic sheet, covered with snowflakes and a white blanket, before each illustration of the dreaming farmer and his animals. Turn the plastic page to discover what kind of critter lies beneath the snow. Carle's magnificent collages, as always, are the heart and soul of his books. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Snow: Delightful!
I discovered this book in my public library and brought it home to read to my grandchildren. They love, love, love it!They love counting and naming the animals, lifting the "snow" transparencies to discover each animal, and best of all, they love pushing the button on the last page for that magical "tinkling" sound. This year I bought a copy to give them as a Christmas gift because I had checked it out many times and they never got tired of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Dream Snow" is a great book for young readers.
Eric Carle's "Dream Snow" is a book that mesmerizes young readers, when they "listen" to the sound of the snow.

5-0 out of 5 stars second Eric Carle ever read
This was our second Eric Carle ever read and found out it made noise! Oh what a bonus! My then 18 month old LOVED this book. Could not find it last year on here but is found and now purchased! This will be a great joy to see his face this Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Snow in Kindergarten
I purchased this book for a colleague as a Christmas gift. She was thrilled to receive it!We both teach kindergarten, and she had been borrowing my very used copy for several years.Tbe special button at the end of the book is the perfect ending to a lovely Christmas tale. She can't wait to share Dream Snow with her grandchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a huge Carle fan, but love this book
I find a lot of Eric Carle's books a bit humdrum, with the exception of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, so when my daughter was given this book for Christmas about five years ago, I thought it was all a bit gimmicky with its "tingle, tingle, tingle" noisy button at the end and plasticky, white-covered pages simulating snow.

But we read this thing over and over, and the rhythm of it was so gentle and the sounds of the book so hushed, that it was a metaphysical experience. In other words, I felt as though Carle was covering us with a white blanket of words.Ahh, the memories of the soft and slow pace bring back a smile.

Then the farmer suddenly realizes that he's forgotten something, and there's a flurry of activity (like a flurry of snow!!) as he rushes out to decorate the tree.Cap it all off with the "tingly" button, which gets pushed over and over and over and over, etc.

Anyway, the long and the short of all this is that I am buying a second copy for my family, having misplaced the original.I now have three other children who haven't been introduced to this lovely book, and I truly think your own children or grandchildren will find it a classic. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Mini book
I ordered this book to read to my 2nd graders and I was a bit surprised when I saw that the book was only 4" tall. A bit hard to read to a class when its a miniature book. Next time, make sure that the size is correct. The title being noted- MINI- like other sellers would have been helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle is a Master Author
Never read an Eric Carle book that I didn't like and think was perfect for a young reader. The colors are always bold and beautiful. His writing is simple and his stories engage the youngest of children. Buy this book and his others for your little reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review by Jake
This book is about a seed who didn't know he was going to get planted. One seed got on fire. One fell into the ocean. The second seed didn't get any sun.The tiny seed grew really big.I like this book because of the seed that caught on fire and because of the one that fell in the ocean.I like the illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle is a classic for toddlers
We absolutely love Eric Carle and this book is no exception. The message of seeds releasing life to the world with sunshine, water and love is timely in this age of fast food and petroleum products.Simple, whimsical and full of import.

5-0 out of 5 stars They go out of their way to make you happy!
